Mahalo ... this was the walking trip I needed. Haven't been to the islands since beforeCovid ... so it was great to see life is coming back to Waikiki. Love having the camera pointed forward as I can see "all"! Am a big fan of your "10,000 steps" in Japan too. Keep walking andletting us see your world!

Oh wow Shinichi, I loved this walk around and thanks so so much for sharing so many wonderful places. I am hoping that construction will bring back good fortune and all kinds of wonderful things once again. This was such a great video to watch, it makes me really want to visit Hawaii and hopefully I will be able to soon. Have a wonderful time, sending love and hugs, bye! 🤗💜

Appreciate you showing us around your stomping grounds, Shinichi! 😊 Hope the changes and construction happening will bring in good fortune and encouragement as we all recover from global crisis. I enjoy seeing the different places in Hawaii through your lens.

I went to Hawaii in 2013 for a destination wedding. I stayed along Kuhio Ave. in Waikiki so it's all vaguely familiar yet different. Great to see it again. Thanks for the flashbacks. :)
PS - I still dream of Marugame Udon in Waikiki 10 years later. I went to a location in Kyoto and was sorely disappointed. Waikiki's Marugame is so tasty!

More happy nostalgia for me. But, yeah, time really marches on, and Kuhio Avenue looks very different than the last time I saw it. I'm sorry much of the gay flavor has gone. As you say, everything changes eventually. I'm glad that they're "revitalizing" the area at least--adding lots of new shops and restaraunts, etc. The sunshine, the palm trees, and the laid back vibe never change, though. How I want to go back to Oahu! Thank you for the super lovely walk, Shinichi! ❤🌺

Those buttons at the crosswalks are there so a person can signal for the walk signal to change. It lets the system know that a pedestrian is there and would like to cross and causes the system to cycle through. Otherwise it stays on a timed cycle. And on the timed cycle it may or may not cycle through the walk signal. It depends on how the signal and light system at that crossing is programed. Some are programed to automatically cycle the walk signals in with the lights for drivers. And some are not. it all dependent on whether that is a busy pedestrian crossing (i.e. near a school where kids walk to school, lots of walkers to and from a park, etc....) If it is at a high car volume crossing it usually does not cycle through the walk signal automatically it will require you press the button to be added into the crossing cycle at that intersection.

I do wonder, are most all the chickens roaming freely,Roosters? Obviously there must be hens somewhere.
I find it odd too,you said there were many.Hope not abandoned previous pets.
Thanks so much, for the beautiful walk!

Thank you for taking us along with you to Kuhio Avenue. I sometimes stay at Garden Inn, and I really miss Food Pantry being across the street. Seems like such a waste, not use the microwave in the room. I have to check out that other market down the street that you passed. I live here but don't know what's going on Waikiki. Have you tired Tim ho Wan in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center?

Kuhio Ave has changed soooo much. If you dropped me blindfolded onto the street, I'm not sure I would know where I was. I was a regular (every single night) at Hula's for about 4 years. Sometimes I still dream about the sauteed mushrooms from Hamburger Mary's and still tell stories about that "gay store" when it first opened. A lot of great memories. I know change happens but it's still sad to see the places you remember disappear.

I'm curious, Shinichi...were you staying in Waikiki when you filmed this or did you drive/take the bus into Waikiki and park somewhere? Great video. As you know, locals don't usually like to go into Waikiki, but there really are a lot of things to see and do. Thank you for the video.

Lovely vid Shinichi, Did you say you aren't allowed to look at your phone? How strange. What about emergencies? Always mean to ask as well, your videos always look really nice and I was wondering what you use to film them? Is it your phone? GoPro? Or a dedicated camera? Still can't get over that weird phone law.

@richardingram2374 I think Shinichi is referring to the 2017 ordinance in Honolulu that bars pedestrians from viewing handheld mobile devices while crossing a street--too many accidents had been happening.

We even have some places here in my state along specific roads where they installed automatic crossings along it every 1/10 of a mile. They did this for high pedestrian volume in the area. How it works is they are not at intersections and all the person has to do is approach the crosswalk and hit the button which lights up the cross walk with flashing lights telling all drivers to immediately stop and allow the pedestrian to cross. We also have a law here that as soon as a pedestrian enters a crosswalk even if they are breaking the law or are in the wrong we as a driver have to stop and allow them to cross. Hence these new crosswalks in the middle of the road.

Wow, I wish they had that phone law in NYC. People are more concerned with their phones than watching where they are going and bumping into people as a result.
Thanks for the tour. Do you ever visit other islands in Hawaii?

Looks like Hamburger Mary’s is gone? I waited tables at Contempo Cafe, gone too but used to be on Kuhio and Kaiolu, and all the happy drunken staff used to go to Mary’s and we all danced together. I lived right there on Kaiolu.

Roosters? That is pretty strange! I read below a comment on how there are more restrictions on gay venues in Hawaii. I'm not at all up on Hawaii politics, at all, but I was so sad/mad/disappointed to read that. I remember when Hawaii legalized gay marriage and it felt like such a win.
