Can i ask Kristina whether having a true crime stories would work on Substack? I have 400 views daily on Medium but since the August update my earnings went down $50 a day to jut less than a dollar.
Oh no. I'm sorry to hear that Medium's recent changes to the Medium Partner Program and algorithm are also affecting you as a true crime writer. I feel for you. I'd recommend checking your stats page and trying to analyze why your stories are now only bringing in $1 per day. I suspect the reason might be that traffic coming from Google no longer counts the way it did. People can no longer access your stories behind the paywall without becoming a member. That is, in the past people could read up to 3 articles for free. Now they can only read a (longer) snippet. True Crime had a really great reading time because people felt so entertained/engaged and wanted to read the whole story. 400 daily views is still good. I would think about repurposing my content and experimenting with the paywall! Coincidentally, one of my stories on Adobe Firefly was not behind the paywall. That day, I had more than 1500 views for my article. That means people want to read our stories! I think that's the most important thing to keep in mind. Substack might be a place for you. I recently talked to another true crime writer on Medium who is now building his media business on Substack. I was listening to a podcast with a Substack spokesperson and she said that she sees great opportunities for true crime writers on Substack and that the platform needs more of them. The reading time is amazing which is why i used a earn good money before the update. Most true crime readers don't engage i.e clap, comment or hightlight, but they will fully read 3 or 4 stories in one sitting. How to monetise this, I am unsure. I will wait for your article. Other business model than on Medium where you create on rented land and you're one of many. On Substack you can see whether people are really willing to pay YOU. You can have two (or more) Substack blogs! You can create mutliple Substacks under one account and then switch between publications. Hi Darren 👋 My recommendation is to combine both. You can repurpose your content and/or create unique content (in different categories) on Blogger/Medium and Substack. I share my posts on Medium on a daily basis. In addition, I have my Substack newsletter. People can connect with me on a deeper level, I engage with them I'm Substack Chat, inspire them to write there too, share more personal stories and also love to connect with other Substack writers. Where do you write? Chasing followers in a thing of the past. Now we want to grow our own audience and build a list of subs, true fans that want to read you! It doesn't have to be hundreds of thousands of people. With 100 you can already earn 8,000 USD p.a. or more
What do you think about starting a Substack for longer-form writing and keeping your original email list separate for shorter weekly emails? Perhaps invite existing subscribers to opt-in to the longer posts on Substack if they want to? I'm considering separate email lists for shorter weekly emails (keeping my current ESP so I can have automations and upsells etc) and use Substack for long-form storytelling and community. Or does having two separate lists overcomplicate things? Thank you!
👋 Sarah! Nice reading from you. Great question. I also have multiple email lists for my online courses, cohorts etc. This used to be on MailChimp but I'm migrating it to ConvertKit. I also have an email list on Medium. As a busy working mom, most of my posts are short and sweet. I know people love this about my writing and I cover a lot of meta stories about Medium. On my Substack newsletter I go deeper and also build a stronger connection with my audience. So it's totally fine to have two email lists, depending on the audience, expectations, context etc. You could also experiment with different platforms. E.g. Substack and ConvertKit (shared a video about its new Creator Network yesterday). From Medium I know that people would love to have a digest where they can click in the stories they want to read. Often they feel bombarded because Medium always sends an email when I write a post. See? There it would be great to have the option to send a digest and daily newsletter for those who like it. Great question. Pledges only work if you haven't made your publication paid yet. If that's the case pledges are on for your free publications when you have suggested pricing tiers. Hi Varun, when I started my newsletter I published well working Medium articles on Substack. I guess there were about 3. Then I stopped. And why? I write on Medium.com. I publish content on a daily basis. I want Substack to be different and a place where I can really interact and engage with my audience on a deeper level. So I write fresh, new and original content. I tease my Substack posts on Medium to get more subscribers. If you don't have much time and just want to try it out, you can definitely republish your Medium posts on Substack. Why? Because your Medium posts are behind a paywall. If your posts are on your blog, I wouldn't do it because there is no added value. Good question. Readers can now download your PDF (just like a file attachment to an email). Note: Someone asked me if Substack offers full screen preview. Unfortunately, that's not possible (yet). I had turned off double opt in feature in substack which stops my subscribers to confirm their email... I have disabled it but when someone subscribe to me it's sending confirmation link on their email... Please help me out in this... I am really frustrated kristina I

I dont need to learn how to write; just how to use substack. This was too wittreing and not about the actual mechanics of using Substack
