Their power has diminished gradually since the Civil War, but they still have a massive amount of influence, they don't pay taxes, and their lives are wholly funded by British taxes and the income from their hereditary untaxed estates. Think of it like this, if you remove the layers of religion and pageantry, the British monarchy essentially owns the entire country and a financial stake in every business made on British soil. They also make money from every transaction, investment, death, etc. That's how taxes worked in the past - all the money went to the King and his family to allow them to live lives of luxury, while the government keeps things running on their behalf. Over the years, the government has become increasingly democratic, and this has pressured the Royal Family to allow more and more taxes to go back to the people in the form of public services - which they accepted in order to prevent themselves from getting Robespierred, along with gradually selling off more of their land to private and public ownership, or granting it to lower nobles. They don't technically "rule" any more, as they lost the right to direct governance in the Civil War, but "reigning" is only partially better for the rest of us. It means our lives are no longer decreed by the whims of an unelected ruler, but they still have all of the money, privilege, and soft power that they always had. I'd say it's below 1% let alone 5%. If a tourist comes here to see even Buckingham Palace which is a place associated with royalty that doesn't mean they have an interest in the royals whatsoever but they could also be visiting just to see the palace and the royals didn't play a part in their decision and still have an opinion on the royals anyway whether it's positive or negative. A foreigner could still visit because they are a royalist and wish to see royal landmarks though this must be such a small minority. From my experience there are many in the UK who care about the royal family whether it's a mild like, mild dislike, love or hatred but I have noticed more caring and opinions on the royal family from foreigners than natives especially during the death of the Queen or the coronation of the new King. I'm apathetic and don't care for them, they could rule for the rest of my life or royalty could cease today I don't care. Of course this is just my anecdotal experience it could be otherwise but we won't know as I don't imagine there's polling in the United States or other countries regarding their opinions about our royal family.
He means "stable" in the sense that they have produced our heads of state in a reasonably predictable manner (with a few upsets such as the barring of Catholics and an abdication) for hundreds of years. If we retain the royal family, then we can already be reasonably sure of who our next two heads of state will be, which might well take us up to the year 2100. That's what I call stability.
lol i'm glad i'm not the only person that noticed this. You could also argue that the only reason the monarchy has been a stabilizing force for so long is they got lucky having such a long time with Queen Elizabeth being a generally likable character. The U.K. has had some genuinely horrible monarchs in its long history (George III, Henry VIII, Charles I just to name a few). Imagine if you had a Boris Johnson type king instead for all of that time. And besides all of that, the U.S. has been relatively stable for almost 300 years without a monarch and we seem to be doing just fine attracting tourists and what not.
I think piers also forget that while it's easy to point to Boris Johnson and Donald Trump I could also point to Charles I, John I, Charles II and James II just to name a few as monarchs who destabilized the nation of England

@@th3be4st61 They ruled for centuries.
The monarchs no longer have personal control over the Crown Estate and its possessions, but they still get to enjoy all of its benefits and luxuries.
We're essentially paying for a small bunch of very posh people to stay in a variety of luxury locations at no personal charge while having the ear of the Prime Minister and all of the most powerful, influential, and popular people in the country, and in return they wear silly hats and tell us God thinks we're amazing.

Morgan referred to "the stable royal family." A family marked by infidelity, infighting, and sex crimes may be ordinary, but it is not stable.
ah yes, such a stable family, assassinating diana. that reminds of how my family tried to assassinate my aunt ! /s
Yeah they're probably so stable thanks to the generations on generations of inbreeding keeping them strong!
Piers: "The monarchy is a stabilizing force "
Also Piers: "The monarchy is destabilizing the monarchy!"
lol i'm glad i'm not the only person that noticed this.
Right?
I think piers also forget that while it's easy to point to Boris Johnson and Donald Trump I could also point to Charles I, John I, Charles II and James II just to name a few as monarchs who destabilized the nation of England
Yes and there's a time limit on an elected head of state, so if they're doing a bad job they won't be around for long.

"The stability of the monarchy"
Um... anyone gonna tell Piers about the War of the Roses, the Gunpowder Plot, the English Civil War, the Commonwealth of England, the Glorious Revolution, or the subsequent Jacobite Rebellions?
More importantly on the issue of stability, who does political stability serve? We live in a system where wealth disparity is accelerating, children are growing up shorter, lfe expectancy is dropping, and educational standards are falling. Yay for stability, eh?
@@Fordnan I mean, compared with bloody, violent revolutions, political stability is probably a great thing, but I would say monarchism isn't inherently more politically stable than republicanism. I mean, in a lot of republics the head of state is a separate position to the head of government. Like in Ireland, the President gets elected every seven years.
@@MarechalVI North Korea hasn't had any bloody revolutions recently. As long as its citizens toe the line, it's a low-risk place to live.
But how many there have starved to death? I don't know that even tanks rolling into the capital and any opposing forces being machine-gunned is as bad as that.
As to the anti-democrat trope of the monarchy bringing stability, that's a deliberate conflation of cause and effect. Britain has, for good or for ill, historically been politically stable, and if it hadn't been, the monarchy most certainly wouldn't have survived.

It is also a great tradition, is a draw for tourists, and, if the people being eaten are democratically-elected representatives, has the same constitutional function.
