I’m glad you keep repeating the lessons about solid wood vs. veneer vs. laminate. What those MCM designers and manufacturers achieved back in the 50’s should be celebrated. I love this piece and all the other MCM pieces you’ve restored. 👍💕
Thank you! It BOGGLES my mind when people say “it’s not worth anything” when the same piece (let’s say it’s a credenza or dresser) sells for over a grand (and often more) easily in mid century stores. I can’t speak for them, but I certainly can’t afford to throw a thousand dollars out the window. Hahaha
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery I love that you save them! But perhaps the "not worth anything" people are really saying "this sort of careful restoration is beyond my ability."
If they weren't recessed, I probably would have even gone that route myself, haha. But because they are sunk in, it was a bit complicated. But I wanted the challenge and tried my best, considering those tools were new to me. Looking forward to improving with them. :-)
It's a valiant attempt! As much as it is imperfect, what you learnt will stick with you, as it was a complex shape. I would have found some way to reuse the broken handle, like maybe use Bondo or Sugru to rebuild the missing bits and kind of celebrate the repair by making it stand out. Put that drawer right at the top!
I love that you take the time to explain why you do or don't do something, and explain about the different woods. I used to be one of those people who "hated" anything other than true, solid-all-the-way-through wood. Now I know better. As usual, your results are gorgeous!
Great job on that handle and very impressive that it’s your first attempt at something like that. The dresser is beautiful and the black paint on the bottom really looks good!🌸
If you hadn’t pointed it out, I’d never know which handle was replaced. This piece of furniture is beautiful! Did you keep it or sell it? Either way, the owner gets a gem! Keep teaching us, Angie.
You have such a talent! I love that you kept the clean straight structures of the mid century style and didn’t do any fancy redesign, but instead let the natural beauty of the wood shine again. I saw lots of your videos and loved every piece you made, including those you weren’t fully sure of or happy with. You have so many reasons to be very proud of yourself and your work!
Someone DARED to call me during the live.... But I must say, I have learned more from your channel than anywhere else. You're my personal skillshare, and I can't thank you enough!
I'm one of those mid-century enthusiasts you speak of and I would cry if some of the pieces you saved and beautifully refinished remained in the trash. Thank you for doing so. Your work is amazing!
Very good attempt at the replacement handle. Fabulous save. The earthers talk about “fast fashion” but not “fast decor”. It’s filling up the landfills too! Never waste a good piece of reusable furniture. Unless you go high end, it’s probably better than what is in the big box furniture stores and Amazon.
You are spot on. We all love those discount decor shops because we can get beautiful things very cheaply, but then when our mood changes or styles come and go, we just toss and buy new stuff. It’s so hard on my brain! Lol
People have too much time on their hands to sit and judge and complain about what other people are doing. I commend you for even trying to carve the new handle! I think it turned out great! Thank you for showing us your process. 😊
So proud of you Angie, for expanding your skills. A piece like that handle is pretty advanced. All curves, no hard lines. Great job, and especially thanks for sharing your learning experience! I wondered about dremel-style sanding and routing bits to hollow out the concave handle. Not that I'm good with either, and you did an amazing job with the hand carving tools!
The piece is lovely and you did a very commendable job on that handle! Thank you for passing along so much information too. We go along assuming people know these things-it’s amazing how many don’t. Excellent job! 🌟
As I watched the reveal, I said to myself that I would be hard pressed to tell which one was the Angie handle, then you pointed it out, What a good job you made of it! x
Tip for your handle, grab a set of forstner bits and pre drill your unshaped timber before carving or routing, then cut to size and shape as required. Makes it much easier and safer. But good job on the handle anyway, we only get better by doing. 😉 Regards Carl... Euroa Guitars Australia
Wow, you just keep getting better and better! Thank you also for explaining your thought processes and why you do or don’t do something. I have learned a lot from you and successfully refinished our dining room table this summer. I have an antique dresser with white water spots which I am scared to touch. I would love a video on different damages to furniture and how to repair or hide the damage.
Linda, From what I’ve seen of her videos, she would probably say that white stains are usually water damage and oxalic acid would get rid of them. Thomas Johnson restoration use it a fair amount, too. You use it after you scare. If you get the powder, mix it in water and spread it on the whole top, not just on the spots. Let it dry and rinse it off with a lot of water. It’s dangerous stuff, so wear a mask. If that hasn’t gotten the spots all off, do it again. Then do all the prepping for the final layers.
Its hard to fit it all into one video, but I've made a bunch of different playlists that may be helpful to you : www.youtube.com/@TranscendFurnitureGallery/playlists
Beautiful restoration of a dresser that someone is going to get many more years out of! My very favorite videos of yours are the ones where you take a "lesser" quality piece and turn it into something stunning! Nothing is a "waste of time" in the hands of a talented person. I'm glad you pointed out that solid wood isn't always superior. And I don't think some people realize how much better the build and overall quality were in older furniture compared to today's--people back then just didn't have as much of a disposable mentality, which is why these vintage pieces have survived in the first place. Another great "save"!
It absolutely is the very reason these pieces have survived, albeit in rough shape for some of them. We've become a throw away society and the products we produce now reflect that. I'd much rather have an older piece!! Thank you so much for watching! 😊
A complete success! Yes! It's well worth saving pieces like this from the trash. I would be proud to have your finished product in my home in Oregon, and I wouldn't hide it in a bedroom even though it is a chest-of-drawers for clothing. But, the shipping cost would be prohibitive for me, and I'd worry about the possibility of damage in transit. Thanks for being so caring and careful with your work.
Sadly those are the very reasons I only sell locally. The shipping costs on these pieces are incredibly steep. Thank you so much for watching and I'm glad you're enjoying the pieces I do!
It's awesome to see a video on how to refinish the kind of furniture most of use are likely to have... without just painting it over! And honestly I couldn't tell which handle was a replacement til you pointed it out. Lovely work!
This is one of those "Holy Cow!!" videos!!! Your recreation of that broken handle turned out absolutely PERFECT!!! You can't tell the difference at all!! The fact that you made it with a sander and some hand chisels is amazing!! As always you turned out another gorgeous piece of furniture that you saved from a landfill.
You don't consider your handle remake a complete success??? Why my dear it is superb. Absolutely beautiful! Love watching your videos. Years ago I used to refinish antiques. You almost make me want to do it again. Thank you. Love your work!
Good job! Your first try at duplicating a complicated wood handle is admirable. I'll just bet that there's not one person in a hundred who would realize it's not original. I've watched many of your videos while some are spectacular, this is one of my favorites. Let's hear it for keeping perfectly salvageable furniture out of the land fill!
Such a beautiful job! When I was growing up, my family lived in Europe for a bit. While there, my parents bought a house full of this teak furniture. This would have been in the 60’s. My mother took such good care of it-I remember her oiling it regularly. Later, when my parents divorced, it was all sold-dang it! It was beautiful then, and it’s beautiful now!
Teak is definitely timeless. Lucky you living in a house filled with teak, sounds like your mom knew what she was doing! Thanks so much for watching! 🙂
It looks great, Angie! The handle wouldn't have been noticeable if you hadn't pointed it out in the finished shots. I love the warm glow that the Odie's finish gives to the piece. And thanks for giving us a glimpse of the bunnies. :)
Nice job, especially with creating the new handle. I have a mid-century walnut piece with sculpted handles very similar to your dresser, and I've been mulling over how to recreate a missing handle for quite a while. This definitely helps me understand that 1 - it is possible to recreate them, and 2 - which methods might make sense for my situation. So thanks for another great tip! :) I'm also 100% in agreement with you on the reuse/repurpose front, and I've become a little obsessive about diverting things from landfills. I also agree that there is nothing wrong with veneer, and am surprised when some people look down their nose at veneered pieces. THE most iconic MCM piece - the Eames lounge chair - is veneer over bent plywood. As are so many other high-end MCM pieces from the most noteworthy designers of the era. So the whole veneer sneer is completely misguided.
Thank you for "getting" it! Most people don't truly understand veneer at all to even have an opinion but those same people class it as fake wood or garbage, and its neither! Kudos to you for diverting things from landfills, we're so quick to throw things away instead of restoring or repurposing. 😊
Angie, Angie, Angie - the new handle is exactly like the others. You did a great job. You’re soooo talented girl!!! I especially like the black bottom. Like they say, “ When given lemons, make lemonade!”
I think your new handle is perfect. But then I think every piece of furniture you do turns out perfect. Have a very merry Christmas. Looking forward to your next video.
I agree that saving pieces from the dump is a worthy pursuit! I don't have the space to do refinishing/refurbishment (tiny one bedroom in a complex...) but i save things from the dump by "free-cycling". I have several pieces in my home that were curbside offerings... just needed a dab of glue, or a piece of trim replaced. One was an expensive chaise that was to be discarded from an airbnb due to a tiny tear in a seam. (EASILY repaired). Keep up the great work! And this piece turned out simply lovely! Great job on the handle!
Great first go at carving a new handle ... with no blood loss, too. The black paint makes it appear to be floating. Thanks for educating the bunnies. I look forward to their edits of bunny only content.
Angie, luv the restoration! The handle looks wonderful, thanks to your artistry. And the paint gives the illusion of shadow accompanied by little legs (the wood finished end pieces, of course). Great job! Again! 🙂🙃😉❣
What a great job you did on that handle, especially for a first time try! It looks great. Have a happy Christmas and all the best wishes for the New Year!
Nice job! I've been woodworking for years and I would have to think about remaking that handle. One minor comment, please, shellac is not one of those plasticy finishes. It can be beautiful. It's natural and food safe. I use it a lot on my projects. Again, I love your work and look forward to each video.
Gorgeous finished piece, Angie! Woodworking is something you can only learn by doing and learning from what doesn't work is part of it. I wouldn't reject an old piece for fine surface scratches -- her scratches tell her story, and she's old enough to have one. Thanks for saving this one from the trash. ❤
WOW Andrea! I like that you replaced the handle using the skills and tools that you had. Much more old school and its satisfying for the soul I find. You should be very proud.👏
Hi Angie. As far as people commenting on what types of pieces you work on, Ignore them. You are working on what you want to work on and you know what kind of money that you can get for the pieces. As far as this project goes, I can't see the difference between your handle and the others and again you have made someone's trash somebody else's treasure. I have to admit that when I first watched your channel and you mentioned painting wood, the hair on the back of my neck bristled. Dumb me. You use paint in such a "caring" way that I find everything that I have seen on your channel beautiful. In finishing, I would like to add a piece of advice that was given to me years ago. You do you.
Thank you so much for watching and the kind words! It's sad I have to make a video addressing this based on the number of comments I get repeatedly asking me the same things.
I think you did a fantastic job on the handle.!!☺️ I, too, agree with you regarding saving furniture. With all the new products on the market, we are only limited by our imagination. Keep up the great work, and let's see some more bunnies 🐇
You are very humble because although you don’t build furniture you are very skilled treating worn out furniture, keep doing those great restoration, I have learned a lot watching your channel 👍🏽
You keep saying things like you "don't have the skill" in some area and then you prove that you do!! Though there may be experts out there who could comment about how things were originally done, how it is considered proper, etc., you prove that the desire to find a creative, innovative solution with the skill set one has has produced valuable results. While it is really cool to have the skill to do things the way it's always been done, it is seriously inspiring to watch you come up with creative solutions and ideas using your creativity and growing skill set. I have been watching you from way back... I am seriously happy to discover each new video you put out which highlights your creativity shining beyond your initial skill.. yet growth in that skill to "do it justice"... and give something discarded, rejected, a whole new life. You are MAGIC!!! ❤🙏💛
I love your videos. I have to tell you that my favorite thing about them is that your original pieces look like nothing I would ever think I would like and invariably I love the "after" of the piece so much I wish I lived near you to purchase them! You did an amazing job on that handle - you couldn't spot it as difference.
Wonderful job on the handle! Thanks for pointing it out in the reveal. Taking the time craft a replacement shows your dedication, skill and determination to bring these pieces back to life.
You don't have to justify repairing veneered furniture - as you say, that is most furniture, and everything you save from going to the dump is a bonus. We have to find ways to reuse this stuff, or we'll be overwhelmed by trash. You did a great job, and I'm so impressed with that handle you made!
Sadly, I do. The amount of comments regarding that very subject spurred me to make this video to address it to help educate people. Thank you so much for watching!
Handle looks great! Never would I have guessed you hadn’t done that before. Love how the whole piece came out. I’d buy it in a heartbeat if I wasn’t 2000 mi away!
I truly admire your courage and resolve to tackle challenges and master things you haven’t learned yet. Good work, Angie! You can feel proud of what you’ve done!🎉🎉🎉👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️
Really lovely!!! You did great!! I’ve missed you lately!! I always look for you - you’re my favorite person to watch for refinishing / woodwork!! Glad to see you again!!
First off I LOVE your videos. You rock! I was wondering if you ever did a video on the difference between laminate, veneer, etc? I've been watching you for about 8 months or so. I loved the one about different wood.

I really appreciate that you take the time with these pieces instead of writing them off. You did a nice job with that handle, too. Anything you're gonna do you have to do for the first time once. 😀
Absolutely agree! We have to change from a throw away Society to valuing timeless pieces like this. Wonderful job on restoring that handle. I love how the piece turned out. Beautiful job. Happy Holidays, Angie!
Depends on where you live. You can’t find a mid mod piece in Miami for less than $250.00 in beat up shape. I know if I keep going around on big junk day I’ll find a good one.

Glad you like it! Thanks so much for watching! 😊
Thank you for watching! Her scratches do tell a story, don't they? They add character too. Thanks so much for watching! 🙂
WOW Andrea! I like that you replaced the handle using the skills and tools that you had. Much more old school and its satisfying for the soul I find. You should be very proud.👏
Thank you so much for watching! Just an FYI - my name is Angie. 😊
It's always relaxing to watch you do all the hard work, on a Sunday afternoon. Thx as always!
Thank you for watching! 🙂
Great job, Angie, you never let us down.
The dresser pulls that you recreated turned out beautiful.
Thank you very much!
Great job on carving out and reproducing that handle Angie.
At the reveal you can't tell.
The piece looks great. 👍
I'll bet it functions great, too.
I like the black base, seems to add a little something to the piece, another great job ‼️⛄🎄
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
I would not have noticed the new handle was any different! Excellent results on your first wood carving job!
Thank you very much! 😀
I think you did a fantastic job on the handle.!!☺️
I, too, agree with you regarding saving furniture. With all the new products on the market, we are only limited by our imagination. Keep up the great work, and let's see some more bunnies 🐇
The bunnies have plans to make their return to the screen in the New Year so stay posted! Thank you so much for watching! 🐰
Beautiful! You're so talented!
You are very humble because although you don’t build furniture you are very skilled treating worn out furniture, keep doing those great restoration, I have learned a lot watching your channel 👍🏽
I'm glad you're learning things. Thank you so much for watching! 🙂
You are incredibly kind! Thank you so much for this, it was a really nice comment to read this morning. ❤️❤️
I love your videos. I have to tell you that my favorite thing about them is that your original pieces look like nothing I would ever think I would like and invariably I love the "after" of the piece so much I wish I lived near you to purchase them! You did an amazing job on that handle - you couldn't spot it as difference.
Wow, thank you! I consider that high praise. Thank you so much for watching! ☺️
Wonderful job on the handle! Thanks for pointing it out in the reveal. Taking the time craft a replacement shows your dedication, skill and determination to bring these pieces back to life.
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
I love the effect of the black panels in the base. And you did a marvelous job on the replacement handle. Lovely as always.
Thank you so much!
Handle looks great! Never would I have guessed you hadn’t done that before. Love how the whole piece came out. I’d buy it in a heartbeat if I wasn’t 2000 mi away!
Thank you so much for watching, I'm so glad you like it! I'm glad it turned out well! ☺️
Great job on the handle. I really like the black at the bottom - very stylish.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, Andrea and all the pets. 🎄🎄
Happy Holidays to you and yours as well Lynne! Thanks so much for watching! 🐰😺
You're so talented Angie. What a good project to practice on. You go girl. Lol do people say that anymore?
i say it 👀
I truly admire your courage and resolve to tackle challenges and master things you haven’t learned yet. Good work, Angie! You can feel proud of what you’ve done!🎉🎉🎉👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much for watching! ☺️
Really lovely!!! You did great!!
I’ve missed you lately!! I always look for you - you’re my favorite person to watch for refinishing / woodwork!! Glad to see you again!!
Thanks so much for the support! Lots of content to be dropped in the New Year, thanks so much for watching! 🙂
I'm glad U found + were able to restore it so beautifully. Here's to another 60 years of use. Thanks for sharing. CIAO AMORE.
Thank you so much for watching! ☺️
I love how you treat these discarded pieces with respect.
Thank you so much for watching!
First off I LOVE your videos. You rock! I was wondering if you ever did a video on the difference between laminate, veneer, etc? I've been watching you for about 8 months or so. I loved the one about different wood.
Thank you so much for watching! If you click on my channel and click on the Videos heading, you can browse through the selection I have posted. Right off the top of my head there's this one:

@@TranscendFurnitureGallery thanks! I'll check it out.
Nothing short of a miracle. Beautiful piece. Pat yourself on the back more often, you deserve it. Thanks for sharing your talent.
Wow! Thank you for watching!! ☺️
Angie, your videos are a master class in patience and precision.
Thank you kindly Debra!
Beautiful restoration.
Thank you very much. Thank you for watching! 😊
If you hadn't of pointed out the handle you replaced I would not have found it. You are a beautiful soul and your pieces are always a work of art in my mind. Have a wonderful day and night
Thank you so much 🤗
You did great on that handle! Good for you to keep trying and learning new things. The piece has been given a new life.
Thank you so much for watching! ☺️
I love watching you work your magic on these pieces of furniture. You take so much care and in my opinion, you are the absolute best! Keep up the good work, and thank you for providing such great videos!
Thank you so much for watching! I'm so glad you're enjoying my content! ☺️
I really appreciate that you take the time with these pieces instead of writing them off. You did a nice job with that handle, too. Anything you're gonna do you have to do for the first time once. 😀
Thank you very much and you're right! We all have to do it the first time at some point. Thanks for watching! ☺️
An absolute mind blowing transformation. Master work on recreating that broken handle. Your talent is limitless
Absolutely agree! We have to change from a throw away Society to valuing timeless pieces like this. Wonderful job on restoring that handle. I love how the piece turned out. Beautiful job. Happy Holidays, Angie!
Happy Holidays to you as well Cindy! Thank you so much for watching! 🙂
Depends on where you live. You can’t find a mid mod piece in Miami for less than $250.00 in beat up shape. I know if I keep going around on big junk day I’ll find a good one.
Love love love, you make every piece look gorgeous. 💖
Wow! The handle is indistinguishable from the originals. Great work. 🙂
I can't even believe you carved your own handle by hand! Great job and kudos for expanding your experience with woodworking. So great!
Thank you very much! I'm glad you like it! ☺️
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery I love how you put a lot of thought into perfecting your art. Not just flip and paint (altho I love paint too) but true artistry. A pleasure to watch and I've learned a lot so thanks for that. Very inspiring.
Love how you challenge yourself and succeed. I can see no differences between the handle you created vs the others. I think you did an amazing job....as always.
Thanks so much Jan! 😊
Angie, thumbs up on this one & two thumbs up on the handle!!! Great job all around for your first time & with basically no experience in wood carving. Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!
Thank yo so much!
So proud of you for pushing forward into your fear. That black on the bottom gives the impression of teak legs.
Thank you so much! 😊
I really loved the bit about you learning to make the handle. I’m to scared to start anything new, let alone documenting it. Thank you.
Everyone has to start somewhere! Thank you so much for watching! ☺️
Angie, it is beautiful! Painting the base black really elevates the piece. Your handle looks great!
Thank you so much for watching!
19:46. You fabricated that broken handle perfectly. During the reveal, I couldn’t spot which one it was until you pointed it out. You performed a marvellous rescue. Best wishes and Happy Holidays to you both and the fur kids.
Happy Holidays to you and yours as well Amie! Thank you so much for watching!
I like that you take us for the ride on the experiment! It helps to see your mental process as you approach something new.
Thanks so much for watching!
You are so sweet and self-deprecating! When I see your finished pieces, I am always so impressed! Keep up the excellent work 👏 👍!
Thank you so much! 😊
Beautiful Work!! I probably would have attempted a repair of the damaged handle with wood putty then painted it black so it wouldn't be so noticable. You've really out done yourself this time!!
Thank you so much for watching!
Gorgeous! Great job on the replacement handle. I was thinking the same thing (to move the drawer with the fixed handle lower in the dresser). I always enjoy your craftsmanship and artistry -- keep up the excellent work!! 👍 🌞
Thank you so much for watching! Great minds think alike! ☺️
Well done for the whole piece and WAOUH!! great job on the poor handle for which you made a really fine replacement.
You rock Angie!!
Thank you very much!
I tend to be a night owl as well and also watch many videos on process, especially refinishing. I give you top marks for recreating that recessed handle, especially mostly by hand. You did an amazing job on it. Thanks for sharing your journey.
Thank you so much for watching! I'm a night owl too so I well understand the binging of videos at night! ☺️
Hello! Don't sell yourself too short, that handle came beautifully and final result is fantastic. Keep up the good work!
We're all our own worst critic. Thank you so much for watching! ☺️
You did a great job on that handle! This is a beautiful piece of furniture!!
Thank you very much!
