Looks like Mario’s shadow could be part of the spike hitbox issue. His shadow is to the right, which might explain why you can “virtually” stand on a spike to your left but instantly die to the right (if you focus on the shadow, you’ll see that you die when the shadow touches the hitbox).
I went to Z7s channel because of that fact... That dude DEFINITLY deserved more love. His skill level is just in another galaxy when it comes to this game

its 1 am in australia and i can't sleep. Ryu posts a new video and i know at least for the next 30 minutes i will be at peace. thankyou ryu, keep doing what you do
The issue with the right hand spike killing you instantly is probably because the game scans the screen from right to left to determine what block you are standing on - the first one it comes across that you are touching would decide whether you should die... so it's probably an oversight if this is the case 😊
This would only make sense if it wasn't happening from the middle of Mario's sprite, but immediately as the sprite touches the spike, like it does with how much you can move over a left spike.
I am so glad that Ryu played more than the one level he mentioned in the intro. I think that he was expecting the levels to give him more challenge, but with several years of Mario maker 2 and his recent return to Mario Maker 1, he was able to take down several more levels than expected
I think if Ryu had put the checkpoint after the pipe, the munchers would have been much harder to sync up to the run I feel like. Maybe that's why he didn't do it way back when lol.

@@bodacious6622 Yeah that did not age well. I hope next year everyone remembers that politics is not a joke, and there are literally lives hanging in the balance.
I still go back and watch you trying to clear check your old DTFP levels. I didn't know Nintendo removed the older levels! Simpler times xD. Very nostalgic seeing you playing them again here!
@@hunterjones5032 You can watch them still on UA-cam. Lots of one space spike jumps and slow coasters. They always had a baby bowser that was supposed to be trump lol. It was all done in a very apolitical and lighthearted manner, so I disagree with Nintendo's decision. I'm guessing they took it down solely for the titles. The later levels survived because he started using the acronym.
While I agree that the spike hit boxes are better to play with, the reason they did that in MM2 was to limit the rampant spike frenzy of MM1, just like these levels prove 😅 difficulty varied, but they all looked like these do.
This reminds me of TWO things. 1. Ryu really loves his precision jumps off of skull platforms. 2. Zeta is a freakin MACHINE!!! Look at the WRs he has. Dude is ridiculous. This was a wonderful trip down memory lane. Haven't seen those levels in quite some time. Thank you for that Ryu!
Personally, I *do* want to see those easy levels. Getting to compare them with the progressively harder levels sounds like a lot of fun, not to mention showing how your skills and ideas in level creation grew over time. Also, a thing I often like to do when microwaving food is opening the door just as the timer hits 0 but before it actually starts beeping. That feels very much like what you did with that tight timer level. XD
Idk about the rest of you but I really appreciate seeing that all the mechanics we've seen Ryu slam other levels for over the years show up IN SPADES in nost of these levels 😂 at least there wasn't star runs and enemy spam... get that garbage outta here (just kidding) That pipe transition and checkpoint though also the first pass mushroom cheese to beat your own level 😅
It's crazy to think about how long he's been doing this. I hadn't really thought about it until this throwback episode. I've been watching episodes of Ryukahr for longer than most TV shows! 😮
It's weird that I remember a lot of these, lol. :) But my favorite episode is STILL "The Most Unbelievable Clutch Save to Beat the WORST Level Of All Time" (The Ryuvenge IV). Incredibly hilarious, ironic, and the weird RNG was wild at every turn.
So with the spike hitbox, I can offer a pretty good guess about how it works. The game has to make a decision about which block you are standing on, whether its normal, ice, or a spike. To do this, the game needs to check what block is 1 pixel below Mario. Now, the game could check every pixel below mario and using that make a decision, or it could check just one. It might be that it only checks the right most edge of Mario and determines what block he's standing on by checking the right most edge, one pixel down
Worse for the kinds of jumps that he was doing- it's pixel perfect to go between two spikes in MM2- but it does make more sense in that you can't put like, your whole body on a spike.
@@maegayagi2639 I'm not sure which part changed, but either Mario's hitbox got wider (exactly 1 block in width) or the spike hitbox got bigger. I think it's the former of Mario getting fatter. This is why the trump jump is pixel perfect in SMM2, if the spikes are exactly 1 tile in width and Mario is also 1 tile in width, there's no room for error, you have to fit perfectly.
It would be very interesting to see if Ryu could take on some or just one level of the Ryuoffice/Ryuvival series with the skills he has now. It's probably not the spike hitbox. It's probly the block hitbox next to the spike that extends farther on one side. He died instantly on the left side on the donut. For mario maker 2 they probably changed the spike hitbox so people couldn't make too difficult levels with trump jumps all the time.
