  • Sail Rock, or Hin Bai, is located between the islands of Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, and considered to be the best dive site in the Gulf of Thailand.
Due to monsoon season, it’s typically dived / dove January through October.
A 90 minute boat ride out, Sail rock is popular in Koh Tao as a 6 hour, 2 tank trip. Around $75 gets you equipment, a divemaster, and even lunch.
Advanced scuba certification is strongly recommended, not only for the demands of this dive, but to allow you to go deeper and explore further down the rock to the other pinnacles and bottoms.
A huge grey slab of granite rock in the middle of the ocean, Sail Rock rises about 10 meters out of the water and reaches below the water to 20 meters and beyond.
The sea floor continues to slope down deeper reaching out to smaller outlying rock pinnacles off to the south, east and west sides of the main rock. Follow the sandy bottom to reach depths up to 40 meters.
Make sure to channel your best jolly Old Saint Nick and slide down the famous Chimney inside the rock, starting at 5m and opening back up at 17m
Visibility ranges from 10 to 40 meters, and currents range from zero to Randy Savage, so check with the local dive shops before you go.
Finally, buckle up for schools of Batfish, Chevron, Great Barracuda, Trevally, giant Groupers... and if the winds of luck are in your favor, sometimes even WHALESHARKS.
If you have extra time to spend on the islands, there are plenty of scuba courses you can take locally. So never hesitate to reach out the local dive shops and operations nearby.
