Hi Kaelyn! I found you during a bit of a midlife crisis, and was so inspired by the road not taken. I had been an attorney with my own firm for 11 years, and sold it. I undertook a Comparative Public Policy MSc at University of Edinburgh, and joined Accepted Society for a minute while working on my thesis. I married a lovely Scot last year, but when I finished my master’s we decided to move back to California so I could take a job as an Administrative Law Judge, working from home. Dream job, although we hope to end up back in Scotland eventually. Thanks so much for all your inspiring content. It really changed the trajectory of my life, and congratulations on the Fox!

Hi Kaelyn! I’ve been a part of Accepted Society for about a year now (since I was writing my undergrad thesis) and now thanks to your videos and the community, I’m studying an MSc in Archaeological Science at Oxford. My research focus is on women’s agency in the intersection of fashion and disease in the past (through osteoarchaeology & historical research) Thanks for all of your videos and the amazing community you’ve built 😊

Long time follower, first time commenter - I've been watching for about a year now, I think? Started because I'm doing a part-time PhD in Creative Writing (in the UK, so quite different to a US PhD) which has a strong focus on British slavery and somehow the algorithm knew to bring me here! Love all your London content these days - I've lived here my whole life, but it's so nice to see it through someone else's eyes and remember that it's a pretty cool place to live!

Hi Kaelyn, one of the (mostly) silent followers :) I started watching your videos in fall 2022 when I was applying for PhD programs. I'm a first year linguistics PhD student right now!
Starting off the day with your vlogs really calms me down and puts me in the right mindset for focusing on work and being productive.

Hi Kaelyn, Gabriela from the Czech republic here ☺ I found your channel last year, when I was really badly struggling with my motivation for studying and considered quitting my PhD. I think it was in summer and I really entered the 2nd year of my programme enthusiastic and inspired by your journey and approach ☺ As it usually goes with motivation and work, since then I had my ups and downs, but I think your channel helped me to look at things differently and everytime I begin to struggle again, I inspire myself by binging your old and new videos. I am specializing in late medieval history, my dissertation topic is on the dynastic policy of the House of Luxembourg in 14th century 👑 I have app. 2,5 years left to finish it and graduate, but I'm quite sure I'll have to extend, which I don't mind for my own mind's sake 😅 I love singing in the choir, watching Formula 1, thrifting and interior design.

Thanks for your video Kaelyn! I just subscribed to your channel. I’m a bit older than you and I’m thinking of going back to university to do a Ph. D. in ancient philosophy in Montreal (I’m a French Canadian and English is my second language.) I clicked on your video because I saw that you were doing a Ph. D. while working on the side. That might become my reality! Anyway I think you’re inspiring! Good luck in the writing of your dissertation. 🤞❤

Hi Kaelyn! I've been subscribed for a good long while now--I love watching you progress through the writing of your dissertation, as I am doing the same myself. I am a fourth-year PhD candidate in English in Ohio. I research, write about, and study humor in Jewish-American literature and film. I love watching your videos while I work on my own dissertation--they are always an inspiration, and you make an excellent study buddy! Your videos have absolutely gotten me out of writing ruts, and in that sense I owe some of my publications to you! haha Thanks for all the excellent videos, looking forward to the next one as usual!

Hi Kaelyn, I am one of those silent followers. I am originally from NJ but I moved to PA to be with my now fiancé and his son. I have been watching for 2ish years now. I am currently enrolled a BSN program with an intent to continue on to my MSN. I originally started college in 2013 with a history major like you. History is my first love and that is what drew my to your channel. I am kind of living through your vlogs of what a day in the life a historian would be... that was my original goal. Now, I am working towards becoming a CRNP, very slowly.
I love all of the London content and the dissertation series. Also, your videos give me a spark and help me get my butt in gear.

It's all the puzzle pieces you create in writing different paragraphs and notes that will help to pull it together, but revision is the hardest part. That's why I like writing the annotated bibliography and/or literature review (as I noted for a comment on another video) because you have a great deal of your work done. Piecing together begins the real, arduous task! Nice video.

Hi Kaelyn! I've been watching your videos since I saw your video on reading an academic journal article! I'm currently in nursing school (last year woohoo!) with an awful lot of scientific articles and nursing-related journal articles that I needed to read through. That video helped me quite a bit on what exactly I should be looking at. Since then, I would play your videos in the background as I'm studying - it gives me motivation to hunker down and really learn and understand what I'm learning. Plus, watching you go to your libraries to get some work done has inspired me to do same - now I've been practically living at the library if I need to focus. 😅

Hi Kaelyn, I loved this video and your entire Dissertation Diaries series! It has been a really enjoyable part of my week so far. I have been subscribed for around two years, but it's only recently that I've been regularly watching your content. I'm now an undergraduate at King's in London studying History, and I've been dreaming of going to Oxford since I was a kid. I'm actually watching a lot of your older content while you were at Oxford for your Master's, and it's helping me get into touch with the kind of future I want, and that's to pursue a PhD in Middle Eastern/Islamic history in connection to other world religions! Your channel is the only one I've found on UA-cam that is catered directly to History and academia, because a lot of content on academia and university in general is very STEM-related. The Humanities is a daunting place, but your videos give me a better perspective and hope that I'll be able to handle it. So thank you for your effort and work you put into creating these incredible pieces of insight, packed with fun and warmth and mishaps and mixups, all while showing up for your work every day at that desk. It's really inspiring, and please continue being the open, lovely, intelligent, organised and beautiful person that you are!

Hi, I am a third year Ph.D. student studying New Testament in the Midwest United States. I still have three more seminars and my research language to complete before I get to the dissertation seminar. Right now I'm still exploring a few options for my dissertation topic, but I hope to get traction on an idea before next spring when I should hit the dissertation seminar. I have been really inspired by your videos and your openness. For myself, I struggle with low vision and use text enhancement software to do my work. I was diagnosed with glaucoma at the age of 13, so I've learned a trick or two on how to adapt to ever-changing environments. I commend your perseverance as you continue to push forward on your dissertation. It is by no means an easy process.

Hello! I remember watching your youtube lives two years ago, when you were preparing your first courses and I was struggling with my master internship at Québec. How times flies!
Now I will soon start my PhD in another field (working on sea level rise/geophysics/biology/AI), after a year break traveling and staying with family. After COVID, I couldn't do more.
I'm ready to join again my academic path, and seeing you on my UA-cam page, still active is amazing!! It brought so much memories. (Funny to know you don't even know me since I felt seeing an old friend haha!) I remember telling myself "okay this girl will definitely learn me two or three things, I need to keep her in mind"

At 28:14. The talk about slavery legislative documents crumbling etc. makes me think of how people stored early paper in America. The Mormon church had many documents tied to early history that simply were lost, stolen, burned, or left behind. One item was the original manuscript of the Book of Mormon. The book dates back to 1829 when it had the first printing. There is a printer's manuscript copy that survives intact and was sold to the LDS church recently for $35 million. However the original manuscript was placed inside a "time capsule" for the purposes of preservation. It was placed in the cornerstone of Nauvoo House by Joseph Smith Jr. in Nauvoo Illinois. The weather is definitely four seasons with high humidity in the summer. When someone tried to retrieve the manuscript years later less than 30% of the original manuscript had survived. The rest was broken down or the ink had fully faded. I have wondered what the value of that document would be if fully intact in 2024. Not just monetary but for academic purposes.
There has been some writing about the history of printing in America. Paper was eventually made in America. In the early days it was so poor quality many people imported the more superior paper from France or England.

Hey Kaelyn! Thank you for a lovely video:) Now I am in the mood to have a productive session as well:)
Even though I am not a historian (I am a PhD student in geoarchaeology), I find your PhD topic very fascinating! It would be great to learn more about legal history and black American studies:) Also I have a more specific question, which came up when you talked about your PhD progress in this video. As I imagine it, a new legislation tends to reflect the changes in the society, which have already occurred, right? When tracking changes in legislation, one can see how the society changes… but there is a period of “turbidity” (“plasticity”) before the changes to legislation are accepted, a period when the norms, dominant thoughts in the society have already evolved but new laws have not been accepted. How a legal historian deals with such discrepancies? Also it might happen that the law exist but the government does not follow it (as we can see in some countries today).. could it be the case for the historical period you are working on? I would love to know your thoughts on these matters:) Sorry for a very specific question, I hope it makes sense:)

Hi Kaelyn! I'm Danielle. Another mostly silent follower. I am an incoming counseling psychology PhD student at ASU. I love watching your videos and taking ideas about productivity, the apps you're using, and your general PhD progress. My research focus is on LGBTQAI2S+ mental health and wellbeing with a specific focus on asexuality, minority stress theory, and intersectionalities therein. I've been following your videos for well over a year and almost 2 years ago, I used Accepted to ask for advice on PhD applications. They suggested using articles I was reading to find potential advisors, which was tremendously helpful. Current Read: Caste by Isabel Wilkerson and Empire of the Damned by Jay Kristoff. Also noticed your Part-Time UA-cam Academy shirt. I love Ali Abdal!

Hello, Kaelyn. I am in the final stages of my PhD program. Currently, in the data collection and analysis process. I am conducting a basic qualitative study on the preparation of K-12 Preservice Music Teacher Educators Using Assessment Strategies. Data collection has been special, I believe I will get enough interviews to commence with my study. I enjoy your content because it is very relatable. Tfs and continue success with your endeavors!

You mentioned you don't have many meetings with your advisor. I was a little confuddled by this. What is the norm in the US? In Australia students have to have fortnightly meetings of a minimum of one hour with their advisor throughout the whole of the student's candidacy. Is this not the norm elsewhere?

It varies a lot but I only hear from my advisor about once every two months or unless I have something specific to discuss

I think one reason Virginia decided that condition of slavery of the child would follow the mother is because Elizabeth Key was so persistent in using the legal system to win her freedom. The legislators were adamant about not setting precedent and potentially losing generations of enslaved laborers.

    • @KaelynGraceApple

Yes! It is well discussed by historians how critical Elizabeth Key's case case. I argue there is a bit more to the story when we study the atlantic world at large in the 1660s.
