The red Cross seem to be doing great work in the prisons, I hope that young lad has supports for when he gets out, it will be tough for him going out into the world after having the support. Wishing him all the best 🙏

Poor reflection of society Seanie K ... its not just Mayo and like everything in life the bad apples tarnish all .... and conscious and unconscious bias being ingrained in so many it's not surprising but disgusting... Great podcast and respect Michael he didn't have to do it and put himself out there but shows what society can do to someone and how maturity can change someone's outlook and mindset .... Best of luck and stay safe

Hard to believe this still goes on. People can have their views on travellers but how can anyone take it out on a kid. Poor reflection on the people running and working in schools in Mayo.

Wonderful interview! Sad scenario, the apartheid scene in the country.
But Michael will go on to do good things:

I know his family. His brother was a friend of mine in school. He was a great footballer, smart lad and i remember being disgusted that when we went looking for work experience he couldnt get anything! By the time he turned 16/17 he stopped hanging arohnd with country people and things went south for him. He fell in with a bunch of travellers who faced discrimination from country people and had no chance of employment so they fell into bad things. The problems in the travelling community are as a result of the way their treated, not becuase they are any different!
Funny enough Michael jumped me and gave me two black eyes while i was trying to break up a fight. I understand his mentality more now and i hope he and all of them get the best of luck after all the shite that is getting throwing against them. He isnt a bad lad, you take away hope and any of us wouldnt be long getting on the wrong track.
Their father is one of the nicest and most decent men youd have the pleasure of meeting.

Hope he’s doing well. The racism in schools towards travellers is beyond a joke seen it happen my own kids all table talk and everything the kids say to travellers comes from there parents

Victim blaming there Tim. If a child is treated appallingly by an education system, how is it the Childs fault? Sometimes people have understanding and empathy, but when it's a Travellers, that understanding and empathy goes out the window. Check your bias and reflect, honestly, on how you'd comment if this man was from the settled population.

Was not referring to travellers in general but to all that blame the system for there own failings.

@@timmccarthy7018 Hi i can only speak for me, but some children don't stand a chance, if a child is born to really bad parents and a system that is against them - like me, its very rare that, that child will live a good life, I spent over 2 years in cork prison in the late 90s, also was put into children's homes, boarding school, foster parents in London as a kid,
