Thank you for the review. Got some of the Mk Is for ages and I love them. The biggest flaw with the new version is that they got rid of the poacher’s pocket on the lower back….
Right on. Might have another release short you'll enjoy. Plus hopefully next weekend I'll have some content on a jacket using the Mitchell camo too. If memory serves me that's your time too?
Hi, thanks for watching. Using this as a mid-layer is killer. It's very hot

@@MoorlanderEDC Considering the sub -30 degrees of Celsius here last winter, I don't think it can be too hot 🥶 But if it's considreably warmer than my previous fleece it might not be too late to use it as a jacket on its own.
I'm going into my third Finnish winter with what I feel was called something else before but is called Helikon-tex Patriot Jacket Double Fleece now. When it gets down to -30ish C it keeps me toasty warm, the best money I've ever spent :)
Got this today. Also in tiger stripe. Very comfy and fits perfect.(I am 180 cm, 84 kg - L size). It is very warm, today was +6°C outside and i went for a walk in t-shirt and this jacket, it was perfect until i faced some wind, sadly it is not windproof(and should not be), so some windproof layer will save the day.
Sidenote: UTP denim stretch are also sick pair of pants i received today. Got XL, which is not my usual size( i wear L), but due to stretchy nature they still fit perfect. Looks like they are out of stock on most popular sizes for a few years already, i was very happy that on of few last ones suited me.
Probably the Wolfhound. They're both great however I can wear the Wolfhound on a summer night if I got cold. It needs to be cold to wear this as it's very hot. I also wear my Wolfhound as a midlayer with other jackets. I could probably do the same with this but be too hot
I love my Mk1 Patriot and LIberty fleeces and I have mixed feelings about the Mk2. It's an improvement, but I will still miss the old cuffs (don't care about delamiations, but the old ones won't wear out like an elastic would). The back pocket ... I found it strange, but some will probably miss it. I prefer the additional ones in th efront. But just a quick tipp for future reviews: the camo pattern of this jacket works pretty well with the greens in the background. I think that you should use a different colorway next time ;)
Do you have the both versions? I do have and love the Gen I Patriot, but I miss the front pockets the MK2 does have, Will the MK2 be as warm and has t he same sizing as the Gen I?
Yep, I have to agree with the camo and the background. I set myself a challenge to try every camo and colour Helikon-Tex do. Every now and again they work a little too well 😂
I found a use for the back pocket! Cut some nice foam out- I used a piece of a cheap blue closed cell sleeping pad- and use it as a removable pad for the lumbar part of your hiking backpack. Obviously this is only useful if you're using a pack. It makes an already comfortable backpack feel heavenly to wear. Also QC was iffy on my patriot mk1, one of the rubber parts of the cuffs was sewn incorrectly and half hanging off. Luckily I really dislike that style of velcro cuff anyway due to delamination issues in the past so I just cut off the whole thing and sewed up the holes left behind. I plan on opening it up again, reinforcing the holes and turning them into thumb loops soon
In the early 1970's, Wakefield's Army Stores (quite a big firm in the north at one time) used to get boots made up in China, and get the manufacturers to add an extra pound of steel into the shank of each boot, because people then, associated weight with quality! This looks like a big improvement on the original Patriot, a heavy jacket, which uses light to midweight fleece, the weight coming from all the zips and nylon. It's my least favourite fleece, because almost all the pockets are in the wrong place. Interesting that they've gone back to Lycra cuffs, which were popular with manufacturers in the 1990's. They look good, are comfortable generally, and there's no faff, but unfortunately after a few years, even if the jacket is in storage, the Lycra looses its elasticity, (the main reason it went out of fashion in the outdoor trade), and can also be vulnerable to wear and tear. Not sure if I'd use it, but I do like the pen channel. Bad idea adding mesh to the pit zips in my opinion. I have a lot of Helikon gear, and do find their sizes vary quite a bit, which is a shame. Price is reasonable I think. Looks good 👍
You really can't beat those old fashioned Amry and Navy stores. Growing up through the 80s we had one in the town into the late 90s until the elder chap owner died and his kids sold the store. 100% get what you say about heavy and quality. I still can hear my Nan telling me the same. On the cuff side, I spoke with a Helikon rep at IWA and they said how the previous hook & loop wasn't the best and kept failing. I think like most things there's pro & cons. I think eventually we'll go full circle and have elastic pass throughs so if it goes you can put in some new elastic... or maybe even Canadian buttons 😆
@@MoorlanderEDC They were great 😃Wakefields, the chain I mentioned, sold some army surplus, but also a lot of work wear, and general outdoor gear (of the time), They must have had well over a hundred stores, with several branches in most northern towns. Their demise came about very suddenly, and in much the same way as your local store. They were a family-owned business, and when one of the patriarchs died, there was a squabble, with some of the younger family members just wanting a big cash pay-out. I can still picture folks weighing up boots in their hands, with weight equating to quality! 🤣They weren't all wrong though, I think we've been suckered with some of the lightweight gear, the outdoor industry is full of con-tricks! 🙄I can see Helikon's point about the cuffs, they were unnecessarily complicated, and the quality of Velcro varies. It could well be that they're not aware of Lycra's limited lifespan, because it's a while since it's been used like that. I'd rather have elastic, (or Canadian buttons!), since it's easily replaced, but I have garments that have had the same elastic bungee in for 30-odd years. Unfortunately, once the Lycra goes, you're kind of stuck with it, unless you don't mind shortening the cuffs 👍

Nice review! Im struggling between the Patriot Mk II and the Rogue Hoody as a mid layer for colder days and also as a top layer for fall or spring. The patriot is the better choice if i want to be warmer right? Which one would you pick in general?
You and Helikon Tex are going to hate me for saying this but... It looks too warm for most of my (active) outdoor needs but perfect for standing around in the cold watching football this winter 😜

@@ginolino6241 I have mine in XL (i like to be able to have something else under if needed and I do not like when a cloth is too close to the skin/slim except the first layer) For the weight as I have no balance just reporting what helikon-tex site is writing: +/- 1,2 kgs)
The MK 2 is a nice jacket but simply no match for the MK 1 and most definitely NOT a patriot. HT did a poor job not to alter the name and to hope it would jump on the success of the MK1 which it clearly does not. The MK2 is a high end hoodie, probably the best on the market right now but it doesn't have the same wearing feeling as the MK1. The shape is a lot slimmer - which can either be better or worse - depending on your shape/reference. What is utterly disappointing is the layout of the rockets . While I embrace the new lower front pockets, I don't see the reason for chest pockets, making the jacket unnecessary crowded in the front but worse the lack of the lower left arm pocket and - far worse - of the horizontal back pocket is painfully missed and a HUGE mistake. Honestly, I had my MK2 only for one day, but the disappointments outweigh the advantages, so I returned it in favour of another MK1 (which I have now in Polish Woodland camo and black).
It's a shame I didn't get to try the older version before this one. It does seem like there's some great features on the MK1 over the MK2. On the slim fitting point, I feel Helikon have adjusted their sizes recently. I was always a solid EU Large and never had any issues. Over the last year or so I've found I'm now a solid EU XL. I haven't gained any weight and my measurements haven't changed at all. If anything I've lost a few kilos recently
