- Here it is! A complete installation tutorial of BMW CarPlay retrofit for your BMW X5 M. If you’d like to add CarPlay to the BMW CIC head unit yourself, Dylan will walk you through each step of the way.
The BMW CIC retrofit kit for CarPlay upgrade includes:
- BimmerTech trim tool kit
- T-20 & Phillips screwdriver
- Electrical tape or ZipTies
- Pick tool

@@bimmer-tech thanks for the prompt reply, whenever I put my car's VIN it shows that the product isn't compatible with my car, a bit confusing, because my car is 2012 BMW X5 E70 LCI, which very similar components wise with the car that used in the video, can you please explain?

I noticed you said steering wheel buttons aren't supported for things like "talk" on the CIC system on the e70. Does that mean we can't use up/down volume buttons on the steering wheel either? how do we control the volume then? The knob on the stereo?
Yes, all steering wheel controls are disabled for CIC's CarPlay, so you have to control the volume with the knob on the stereo.
@@bimmer-tech Does that not apply to other audio sources in the OEM head unit, like AM/FM/Sirius XM Satellite radio? Can the steering wheel volume controls (and the other buttons) still work with the standard audio sources? Just not with the CarPlay feature? I have a 2011 X5 35I and am considering this upgrade..

I am trying to upgrade my wifes 2013 x5 from the existing ide 4 that has 2g available cellular carrier that uses at&t sim card to the newer ide 6 or ide 7 which uses 4g and 5g to utilize thr available aps as well as internet browsing including youtube and also includes apple car play. The bmw genius helpline said i need to bring the vehicle to the dealer to have them scan the vehicle to see if it’s possible to modify. I was wondering.. someone else must have tried and or done this before and figured you guys would know.. any chance you can help with this? The genius help lady said its been done before basically having an x5 that utilizes a 2018 x5 software and available aps like remote locking and unlocking doors and turning on ac vents auto, park assist and more (I know not all options will be available) in a 2013 shell!
Hi, we don't offer NBT Evo for E series but you could ask about modification like that on forums like Bimmerfest or Bimmerpost. If you're looking for CarPlay, you could install one module (CarPlay MMI Prime) and it would add it.

As the audio is through Aux, is it of lesser quality than the original audio in the car without the MMI? Also why do you need the Wifi antenna if your original host system has Bluetooth? And finally how many phones can you connect to the MMI unit? Thanks
The audio output circuit in our BMW CarPlay upgrade has been specifically selected to squeeze all the quality we can out of the iDrive AUX input, providing great audio quality for music, streaming and calls. If your vehicle is not equipped with an AUX input in Media/Radio, we’ll have to code it. The Wifi antenna is included since this would be the channel through which your phone will connect to the MMI. You can only have one phone at a time connected to the MMI.
Talk button activates iDrive voice command and Siri at the same time. Can BimmerTech please provide a solution to disable or code out voice command?

We're always trying to cover more vehicles, so never say never ;)
But for now, your best option is our SmartView HD Flex. It's compatible with CCC vehicles, and lets you mirror both Android and iOS devices. Not quite CarPlay / Android Auto, but you're still going to get Waze, chat and other apps on your iDrive screen (including apps that aren't available through CarPlay / Android Auto, such as UA-cam).

Do you have to use Aux to get audio via carplay or can it get the audio for carplay via bluetooth?
You have to use AUX to get audio via CarPlay.

Where can I go to have someone install this for me and how much will it cost? I plan to buy the CarPlay MMI Prime Retrofit for BMWs and MINIs from Bimmer Tech, but can an auto shop do it for me? I doubt the dealership will do it.

I see you did not usb cable connector, where do you suggest we store that ?
You can rout it on the left side of the glovebox. If you want to have an easier access to the port you can also rout it out under the A/C panel so that it comes out towards the cup holder area.

Any problems with original USB plug after the install? Because i installed one and now when i want to listen music from USB the music juggers.

I have a 2010 x5 e70 my Bluetooth control module has stopped working , if I buy one of these does that mean I don’t need the Bluetooth control module anymore anyway ?
Our MMI Prime will not substitute the Bluetooth module on your vehicle and won’t help you connect to the BMW Bluetooth.
For Android users the BMW Bluetooth is also needed to work together with the MMI, on Android multimedia apps will stream audio via Android Audio while calls will still be routed via the original BMW Bluetooth connection.
When i press the talk button siri and bmw voice commands are activated the same time. Is there a way to disable the bmw voice?
If you have retrofitted the MMI Prime for CIC equipped cars then in this case there is no support for steering wheel buttons. If you are using the MMI Prime for NBT equipped cars then you will most probably have to unpair your iPhone from the OEM Bluetooth.

OK, I watched this whole video to see how the existing back-up camera installed to the unit, and it wasn't even mentioned. Does it not support the existing camera?
Hi,
The MMI Prime is compatible with OEM BMW backup cameras without the need to make any physical changes during the installation, it is just a matter of selecting the correct setting at the MMIs settings menu -> Parking -> Rear View Camera and selecting “Factory”

does android auto support bmw x5 2011 as a default?
