Among the toughest people I've ever heard about, this man is in the top few. By all accounts he was a highly intelligent man, making his brain injury all the more tragic. Despite the tragedy of his last years, I will always find inspiration when I think of Iron Mike.

GunBug Bit It's heartbreaking how obviously intelligent this man was before football. Watching Mike talk...it's watching a man with a once articulate brain start getting too far ahead of himself, then crashing, unable to complete the initial complex thought. What's so frightening is they almost appear aware that they are unaware. Atkins knew he no longer could recite the months and so if you listen close he says something to the doctor along the lines of "let's try a different exercise". This is beyond sad and scary. I understand these men are compensated well but omg..this is the ultimate sacrifice. No amount can be worth that. Is it? Am I wrong???

Then to top it all off, Webster died at a very young age - only 50 years old.

    • @flyingcapsicum

One of the things that really gets me about players from Mike Webster's generation and before is that they really weren't well compensated. When their football days were over they had to find second careers. And for many, like Webster, damage to the brain prevented them from being able to do that.

The thing is, I don’t know if you would’ve been able to drag Iron Mike off the field, irregardless of what was known. But Mike Webster, though he died tragically, did not die in vain. In life, he made the mold for what a center is and anchored the greatest football team ever assembled. In death, he revealed the horrific truth of CTE. We now have angel caps, (relatively) stringent concussion protocol, mental health awesome is at an all time high- the game now is nowhere near as violent as when Mike played. Because Mike played. He gave us, not only the people of Pittsburgh but anyone who loves the game, everything. We can never forget that. To this day, brain studies are being conducted in Pittsburgh on former, living (and willing) NFL players. It is the least that we can do here, where Mike Webster laid down everything to play the game we all love so much. He is a legend. He is a man deserving of a bridge in the Burgh!! 🖤💛🖤💛🖤💛

+Jeremy Ganther are you kidding me? "Let your kid do what he wants?" Isn't that the point of being a parent? To protect your children from harm? To teach them about what is right and wrong in life? John Rambo is simply looking out after his child which he has every right in the world to do. It's what a good parent does. "Let your kid do what he wants?" That's got to be the stupidest thing you could have said. That's the problem with the world today, kids running the house and telling their parents what they will and won't do. You also miss the point. You said if he gets concussions then make him quit. If he gets concussions they could lead to long term brain damage and then he would be messed up for life. The world needs more good parents like John. We need more good doctors, teachers, and those who advance society for a better tomorrow. The world doesn't necessarily need another ball player.

The simple fact is this. We were already unified as fans until this whole kneeling bullshit started. And at that point a lot of patriotic Americans decided that they love their country more than watching so called oppressed millionaire football players disrespect our military and the flag. As far as the concussion crisis that rocked the NFL I'm well aware of that. After all the scandals the league has faced over in recent years this whole kneeling bullshit was the last thing the NFL needed.

mason orosco shut the fuck up dude. The players are kneeling for the others that don’t have a platform or a voice. They’re kneeling for the unarmed black man that gets shot in the back by police. They’re kneeling for the black mane that didn’t get the job because of they’re skin color. You’re no true patriot if you have a problem with that.

@@masonorosco1090 How are they disrespecting the military? lol. You government worshipers need to realize the flag is literally a piece of cloth. The military and police kill thousands of innocent civilians every year. Be a man and stop blindly defending scumbags and have some sympathy for people who are actually being oppressed.

This is sad. I'm watching the movie Concussion right now and by watching this video, I can see something is very wrong with Mike Webster. He can't even focus to have a 2 minute conversation! But there are some things I don't get..like WHY he was living in his truck & in train stations when the NFL pays players millions of dollars during and after their careers. How did he become homeless?? Why didn't anyone help him??

Paul C with new reports coming out about CTE they almost have to pay what they do now, they'll have to end up paying even more if they don't want young people to start playing basketball instead because you won't get CTE in that and just role player NBA player makes twice as much as a star QB, and a QB makes twice as much as every other player when the other players are taking most the risks. The only thing that will keep the NFL from dying off is that not everyone can be blessed with 6'6"+ height to play basketball.

That's what troubles me. Now that we know there is a link, people are still going out there and taking the risk. And there still will be. And I feel even worse for them because when they get CTE, they won't even be able to sue for benefits b/c the NFL will say that they knew the risks.

No human beings should have to go through this white or black red yellow brown or whatever back ground. It's sad I can't even imagine what Mr. Mike Webster went through. And really don't understand some white fan criticism of young black players about how they approach the game today. At the end of the day that all it is a got damn game. Getting pissed about the black players celebrations on the what else do they have to celebrate, in a society that really don't care about their culture and where theses black players came from, most from a little of nothing. Never ever been snow 🎿 out on the ocean 🚢 ing up in the mountains climbing, traveling to another country, staying and living in the finest community and hotel visiting their grandparents. Why can't they celebrate the only fun they know, white privilage is not apart of their everyday routine, get off theses young men's back, for your satisfaction, when wrong is really being done point it out, like owner Robert witchkraft. Hating theses blacks players because they make millions of dollars that harm them more than it helps. But let theses players have some fun. 1 play away from a career ending injuries and fans don't celebrate at their 🛌 side or funerals.
