    • How To Choose The Perf...
It's second year and your college advisor is telling you that by tomorrow, you'll need to declare a college major and you're starting to feel the pressure. It starts with not knowing what to major in, then questioning if you'll ever graduate, followed by whether you're going to find a job and finally if you do find a job, will you make decent money? The anxiety keeps piling on and..
I'm here to tell you STOP IT. RELAX. BREATHE.
This is just the classic maneuver of everyone in your situation "Catastroph-izing" your future when there are millions of variables at play - simply put you cannot predict your future. Sure you can help mold it, shape it, steer it and that's why we do what we do but to fear the worst is not productive and will only give you high blood pressure.
Now i've done a video already on "How To Choose A College Major" and that's a great starting point. But more recently, I got an email from a viewer who is under the gun to choose a college major and we:
    - Go through her entire email line-by-line and break down exactly what is going on
    - Provide real tips that she can use for next steps so that she can regain control of the situation
    - Reveal the struggle and anxiety she is experiencing as she tries to rush to a decision
    - Talk about the reality of the "pressure" to choose a college major

I graduated recently with a bachelor in international law. However, that was basically a degree I was pressured to choose by my parents. I always wanted to do music and theatre, and although people have told me I was good at it, I’ve always felt like I wasn’t good enough and that it’s a “childish” passion. I am quite “artsy” and I also do stuff like writing fiction, photography and drawing - but once again, I don’t consider myself particularly good in any of these. Personally I feel like I’ve only ever excelled at English (which isn’t my first language, by the way), but thats not something I’m interested in pursuing at all.
Right now, I’m planning on starting over and getting a different degree.
On one hand, I want to pursue my actual “passion” which is either music or theatre, but once again, I don’t have confidence in my skills, moreover I fear ending up as a starving artist. But at the same time, I don’t want to go and get another degree that brings me nothing but pain.

My sister is a senior in high school, and she does not know what she wants to go to college for. She was in culinary and does not like it. She has never had a job besides waiting tables for the school's restaurant. My mom has been pressuring her to go to college. She really wants her to get a degree and a good job, but my sister doesn't know what she wants to do. I told her that she should take a break after high school and get different jobs to see what she likes, pick up hobbies, or choose a trade school because Atleast that is inexpensive and short, and she wouldn't need to work at McDonald's. I think she still has plenty of time to choose a career, but my mom keeps telling her to go to college. I totally disagree getting into debt and switching careers , like my cousin who keeps switching from nursing to teacher and hates both. My mom didn't even finish elementary school in Mexico, I feel like she just wants that dream of college and a good career for my sister. But I know that a college degree doesn't always guarantee a job. I on the other hand, only have a worker's permit that can be taken away anytime. And also a single mother of two kids, so I have to work, drop/pick them up from school, just going to college to get a degree is not the best choice for me. No time and no certainty of a future even if I went. So I was getting my real estate license and cleaning houses on the side, until I decided to put being a real estate agent on the side and pursing my own cleaning business. I want to hire people to work for me so that I can focus on real estate without worrying about money. I'm 24 and I'm hoping that will happen in 5 years. I completely disagree with my mom on pressuring my sister to choose a career so young and with no experience in life. And she is totally ignoring my advice. I can only let her live her life and learn and help guide her. But for now I don't know all the answers and wish I had them for her

Hello! I just came across your video and I've watched a few relating to "finding or choosing your major" and im soon going to start my second year of college. I honestly don't know what to do. I started of in Electrical engineering and hoping that in the future i could work with NASA or Space X in the U.S and maybe later pursue Aerospace engineering. But ive found myself doubting that plan, since i was little ive always had a huge passion over astronomy, mathematics, sciences, history but growing older and advancing grade levels in school, i learned that i also continue to love those things but that i also love learning about different cultures, languages, technically learning about other areas of the world and their lifestyle and history. As well as some politics, law and psychology. Im currently all over the place and im not sure of what i want to do anymore. I just know i dont want to teach, do any type of art, dont really feel like working in a hospitol would be my environment , i really dont see myself being a lawyer, atleast not anymore, and i would love to travel and be able to learn and use many different languages, at the moment i know english, spanish and working on korean and that i also want to be active in my jobs, always having something to do. Maybe discover, invent, innovate, help people, i just want to do alot which i know sounds crazy and impossible, but i dont seem to believe in the impossible.

It's my 4th year in community college. I'm taking it on my own time but my parents are rushing me to just get a degree and get a job. I have a part time job as a special ed instructor in the school district and seasonal as a badminton couch for a high school. I love helping people, so I picked a kinesiology as my major and as being a Physical Therapist. But as I go, i have a hesitation if I'm going to enjoy it or not. For my hobbies, i absolutely love dancing and music but my parents said it's just hobby and I wouldn't earn that much money. I hate school with a passion and having parents telling me that my cousins from philippines has a degree and has a better job really bothers me.

If you don't know what you want to do, then why do you go to college.
    1. You should first figure out what you want, then decide if you need a bachelor's degree.
    2. College is the worst place to figure out what you want to do in real life. College is NOT the real life, life after college is the real life. You need to live in real life and try out different things to figure out what you want. Take a gap year is a really good idea.

Living with parents isnt an option; I was homeless four years back before I came to the situation I am now.

What do I do if I am literally interested in almost everything? I would love to be an immunologist just as much as I would like to be an English major, or an art major, or a history major.

Good problem to have! Go for the major that gets you the best chance of a high paying, secure job. The rest of your interests can be tackled as a pastime

I have the same qualities. Went for a radiologic technology program and finished the prereqs last semester. I turn in the application and now i have to wait to get accepted. This could take 1 year, 5 years or longer. Hopefully i get lucky. Those same prereq courses fufilled a bachelors degree at a university(it was a natural science degree). At orientation i found out the degree was meant for those who want to be a middle school teacher. I said fuck it and on the first day i hate the major courses. So i dropped them switched majors and now im back at cc for 2 classes. Now i dont know if i made a mistake or if i should just wait for the rad tech program to accept me. Im also not motivated whatso for college anymore. A part of me feels like my time is up.

You can explore. You can take online udemy class on computer programming (Python or Javascript ) to see if you like programming. Or take an AWS or Linux course to see if you like computer DevOps. If you really like math you can look into Data Science or Actuary. You can enroll in Edx and take a Data Science/Machine learning course for free.
You can also take an accounting class at a local community college, or adult school. or just volunteer at a Accounting/Tax firm.

101 Mentor hi, thanks for responding. I have one year experience working as an HR file clerk. I wanted to start over and apply for an HR position entry level. With just my exs degree, or rather go back again to school for a degree in business ad or masters in business or masters in psychology?

Can you please help me I'm about to start my freshman year of college and torn between computer engineering and finance. I understand numbers well so I think I'll do great in both now here is the real issue. One downside I see in finance is a fear of starting with a very low paying job like something belown $50k. And my downside for hardware engineering is that I took programming a year ago but i didnt give it my all and didnt understand alot so now I have a fear in the back of my mind with going with hardware engineering that I might not really understand coding
