  • Discover the ultimate eco-friendly solution for your guinea pig's habitat that turns into gold for your garden! This video unveils the secrets of using biochar, coco coir, and rice hulls as innovative bedding materials. These materials not only offer a safe, smell free, and comfortable environment for your guinea pigs, but they also double as a miraculous additive for your garden when it is time to change out your guinea pig's bedding. Plus, they are incredibly affordable, easy to use, and are great for the planet!
Here's why we love biochar, coco coir, and rice hulls:
Biochar is wonderful at absorbing moisture, smells, and nutrients, keeping your guinea pig house dry and odor-free. When added to your garden, biochar enhances soil nutrient retention, water holding capacity, and biodiversity, acting as a long-term soil health booster and carbon sequester.
Coco Coir provides a soft and comfortable bedding layer for your guinea pigs while also absorbing urine and moisture. When added to your garden, coco coir has excellent moisture retention, neutral pH, and the ability to enrich soil structure, promoting robust plant growth.
Unlike biochar and coco coir, rice hulls resist moisture, making them an incredible top layer for your guinea pig bedding. Urine quickly wicks away into the bottom, moisture absorptive layers, so your guinea pig house stays dry and smell free. When added to your garden, rice hulls help prevent soil compaction.
Plus, all three materials are great for the environment because they are byproducts of other industries. This not only make them very affordable, but you are helping the planet too by keeping this waste out of landfills!
From setting up an eco-friendly guinea pig home to transitioning their used bedding into your garden, we cover everything you need to know. Learn how to layer these materials for a perfect bedding solution that not only keeps your guinea pigs happy but also turns them into garden gold, enriching your soil and promoting healthier plant growth.

How often do you clean this?

Great question! It can vary, but in general, I alternate each month between just scooping off the top layer of excess hay and droppings and adding a fresh layer of rice hulls, and doing a full cleanout. It never ever smells thanks to the biochar and is always dry thanks to the absorptive moisture layer of the coco in the middle, and the anti-absorptive dry layer of rice hulls on top.

We sell rice hulls in our shop, Gardin, if you happen to live near Boston :) Otherwise, if you google "Rice Hulls" a few different options for shipping pop-up. Best of luck!
