Really enjoyed this. I like their early lps. As a kid in the 70’s they were very out of style. As an older guy now i dig their 60’s vibe alot. I try to pick up lps when i find them. Gotta find that Fool on the Hill lp obviously!
I can't thank you enough for this video. I have always liked Sergio Mendes and never really took the time to get to know his albums. I just got Fool on the Hill for $1 at a garage sale and it's in decent shape. It sounds great and the whole album is just a gem. I know I've actually heard it before, but playing this on vinyl through my decent system is a real pleasure. Thank you for hooking us all up Mr. Kenny!
My personal ranking : 1. Look around 2. Fool on the hill 3. Equinox 4. Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 5. Chrystal Illusions 6. Stillness 7. Ye-Me-Le I saw him back in 2019. Got me a ltd poster from his In the key of joy concerts in the US Hollywood Bowl in 2021 - signed & a T-shirt from those same shows. Have also 23 of his vinyl albums and couple of cd's. His music always makes me smile and lifts up my mood. If there is a heaven , I'll ask them to play Mendes.
Your Ranking is great. I was able to see him in 1988 but I have not seen him since then...hopefully I will be able to in the near future. Thank you very much for your comments and viewing my video
Wonderful presentation...I am Brazilian and a hardcore fan of Brasil'66... Well, here's my list ... At #7. Crystal Illusions. At #6. Stillness At #5. Look Around At #4. Ye me le At #3. H.A. presents.... At #2. Fool on the hill At #1. Equinox For me Lani Hall, Janis Hansen and Karen Philipp were the best singers Mendes has ever had. Good job my friend !
Nice list 👌 Lani hall is probably the best singer that Mendes has had. Janis Hansen is great and Bonnie Bowden of Brasil 77 was also great. Thank you very much for viewing my video.
Thank you for posting this video. I am a huge fan of Brasil '66. I find your choice for #1 as Fool on the Hill great, because it's just about my favorite album by them as well. Lani Hall was "the voice of Brasil '66," says Mendes. She joined when she was only 19. Mendes was saddened when she left the group, but she had a good reason: she married Herb Alpert. They have been married for over 50 years, and have performed together in public many times. Great love story!
I'm a UK DJ and have been obsessed with this band since the mid 1980s. There's many tracks I play out. So here's my list of favourites from a London DJ perspective. Stillness - For What It's Worth Look Around - Roda Equinox - Chove Chuva Fool On The Hill - Upa Neguino Brasil 66 - The Joker Ye-Me-Le - This Masquerade Crystal Illusions - Dois Dias. But...the bottom of my list could also be at the top as the title track of Crystal Illusions is one of the greatest pieces of Latin lounge music in terms of pushing boundaries of experimentation. Sergio Mendes was brilliantly inventive, but that track is like the Sgt Pepper of Easy Listening.
Thanks for the vid... great topic. I've known about SG & B66 since I was a youngster, having an older sister who was really into music and bought albums, but I've never really thought about their output of albums. Very informative.
As my favorite artists after the Beatles, I have all of their recordings. Favorite songs: So Many Stars, Night and Day, Like a Lover, Pretty World, and The Look of Love. I will refrain from condemning Herb Alpert for taking a young Lani Hall, ending the magic of their sound.
We both have the very same Favorites! I grew up with this beautiful music and would listen my albums, over and over. I'm very romantic and his music and Lani Hall's voice, filled me with love. I snuck in, backstage, as the girls were taking their bows and spoke with everyone and got their autographs. It was an unbelievable event and l have loved this sound for all of my life. Nice to know there's someone who is touched by these same songs. Take care! 🍀🎶🎶🎶
I'm glad we don't have to chose by album anymore. Generally speaking, the more authentically Brazilian the music, especially percussion, the better. 1 Look Around, for song selection and Dave Grusin's orchestration 2 Equinox, good selection of Brazilian songs 3 Crystal Illusions, unique Hall/Nascimento collab Empty Faces 4 HA Presents, original sound of the group without heavy orchestration 5 Fool on the Hill, several Edu Lobo composiitions, notably Canto Triste (muita saudade) and Casa Forte 6 Ye Me Le 7 Stillness
The story supposedly was that Mendes fired everybody after the first album (second?), then brought back Lani Hall only. I don’t really notice a difference between the Lani-Janis Hansen front line and the Lani/Karen Philipp front line. Such a fresh sound with the unison vocals from the two women.
Well, the real story is true,BUT ALPERT forced the change. Remember , SM66 did not do well at Atlantic; problem is Alpert screwed up by dating and employee, Hall. Alpert backstabbed Mendes group taking his lead singer away. Even if Hall did like Alpert ( I believe she liked his power position and money( security) more., Alpert should have brushed her off because Mendes found her , Hall was singing in a local Chicago club. Mendes was very upset with Alpert for YEARS! Lani Hall admitted it. Alpert should have never done this to Mendes.. Mendes group still good, but it cooled off. You can tell by the rhythm of the later albums.
Your three favorite sergio mendes brasil 66 albums are great choices and your reason for the choosing them excellent...sometimes in winter is one of my favorite songs from the band.

Beautiful copies of these LPs, and thanks for showing us labels and back covers so well. Wonderful presentation overall.
Paulinho Da Costa..!! Yes indeed. Dream band percussion for sure. I've seen him live.
One of the best ever for sure ✌️
Welcome to the VC. It's nice to see some different stuff.
You have excellent taste in music sir!
One of my favorite songs is Pretty World from Crystal Illusions, Dave Grusin did the horn arrangement.
Thank you....Pretty world is a nice song for sure 👌

I heard the same story but I honestly do not know if it is actually true.

I have all the 7 albums. From an audiophile perspective, Crystal Illusions has the best sound.
Good choice 👌 🎶
Kenny, I just got a copy of "Sergio Mendes' Favorite Things" his 1968 Atlantic album for a buck. Do you have that one?
I have that album and I like it a lot..I purchased my copy during my senior year in high school in during the 1978-1979 school year.
Yo solo tengo 2 álbums
Thank you very much for watching my video ✌️
