  • A new hobby you can enjoy in your kitchen, or take on the road! Jamie Wylde gives basic instruction for how to play spoons, in a style of percussion designed to accompany traditional old time music. Includes demos for playing along with popular jam songs Arkansas Traveler and Whiskey Before Breakfast (videotaped live during a recording session for Celtic band Charmas). Download "Spoons" version of Whiskey Before Breakfast from i-tunes, CDBaby, Spotify, or charmasband.com.

    I’m from the wv coal fields. And thI n Nashville for a while. Now I’m a. Mailman in Ky bourbon country. I got a wild hair while drinking one day and though. I can play the spoons. And I got me a decent pair any by god I been tryin to learn while I can. Work 60 hours a week as a cca but I try to fit in a half hour here and there. I play other instruments which helps but I don’t hav any friends yet and always practice alone. But thanks for sharing! It’s really helped.

      That is great to hear! This is definitely one of those instruments you can never complain you don't have time for practicing...in the car...while your spaghetti is boiling...in the bathroom... :)

    The song was so loud that I couldn’t hear you playing.

      @CharmasBand  5 років тому

      Thanks for reaching out, Cyndi. Yes, the spoons aren't especially loud in the song, just because it was recorded for Spotify, not for spoon-instruction, but we think it's still pretty cool to watch Jamie's moves while he's playing :)

    What if you have only one hand

    • @santacruzbagpiper6111
      @santacruzbagpiper6111 2 роки тому

      Well, I don't play spoons myself, but I guess you would need to get creative. Do you have an arm where the hand is missing? One could theoretically use their leg plus a stick held by an arm to whap the spoons on both sides. Or, cheater spoons, of course (the kind where you only need to whap your leg). I tell you, I am amazed by what people come up with. Where I live, there is a bagpiper who has one hand with no fingers to speak of. Somehow, he manages to cover those holes, and they tell me he is a good piper too!

      I am not the spoons player in this video, but if you would like to accompany your musical friends, I would say start slowly. Just tap along to something easy like kids' music and build up from there. Fanciness is not important. What matters is having good rhythm. If you have good rhythm, you are listening alertly, and you are having fun, your friends will be stoked. Even a very simple spoon beat can help keep the musicians on track and prevent them from speeding up as the tunes come around.
