Nice review, although I don’t entirely agree with the findings. I’m a police officer (UK) and I (and my colleagues) have tried a many torches from brands like Olight (my favourite at home), Nitecore (decent), LED Lenser (awful) and others… but Fenix is by far my favourite brand for work. I’m on my 3rd Fenix now (for reasons) but personally, at least from a general policing perspective in the UK the best for me is actually the PD36R. It’s a better size (the TK range is just slightly too big to be comfortably carried on a tac vest) and I disagree with the charging; we have to charge quite frequently and taking the battery out is a chore and opening all the time ruins the o-ring seal quickly. We have lockers for our tablets and radios with a USB C charger in them, so it’s far easier to just quickly plug into the side and water ingress has never been an issue. Everyone who doesn’t work in the emergency services/military (and indeed many manufacturers) think they know what the best ‘tactical’ torches are, but few understand what the actual day to day use is like. Unless I’m a special unit we carry 1 torch only. They need to be good allrounders (close up, reading, shot and long range searches, navigating through woods…) and reliability and ease of use is way more important than smashing glass, which you might do once a year at best (and we have other better things for that), so thats just a gimmick really. I do miss moonlight mode though, and I don’t think any torch marketed at law enforcement should be without it. It’s essential for close up work, writing/reading notes, checking kit, and etc without blinding yourself or your oppo who is driving. This probably account for 50% of its use.
@@mickyp4 The new PD36R pro. I have tested it side by side with the TK20 v2, and you can’t tell any difference in performance - same led, virtually same brightness (can’t tell unless both are on next to each other, even then it’s no more useful), beam pattern and spread, same tail switches and beam pattern. Basically the PD36R pro is the same torch, but its slightly shorter and 40g. It doesn’t have the same so-called ‘tactical’ head, but no one needs that away, and the smaller head on the PD mean it will slip in a pocket. The PD36R pro is also a bit cheaper at the moment.
@@d5555 Just deal with it, as soon as Fenix stop ignoring the fact lots of people want it I will upgrade. But even without it, their torches are still the best choice overall.
Hey mate. Fellow cop here. I also happen to be a Brit but ended up in the States (long story). I find that I need direct access to Turbo mode with a single button press regardless of what mode I left the light on at, especially for traffic stops and punching through window tints on vehicles. Lower modes are definitely useful too for checking IDs and other administrative work. Currently using a Klarus XT21X and it’s been great
That was a really helpful review. I bought the TK20R V 2.0 2 weeks ago and now I know that it was the right decision. I love the easy access two all the features. Best wishes from Germany, Frank
I still prefer my TK16 Mk2 as the battery can be charged outside the flashlight as this has more advantages especially if you purchase a second battery like I did. There is no need to have extra fiddly charging compartments that rely on the O-Rings to keep out water. No mention if the rings were replaceable for the charging section. I also prefer the inclusion of the tungsten spikes as this helps to protect the paintwork of the bezel. Fenix are really trying to squeeze more money out of us.
I get those points and the 16 is a great light - but if I was buying new now I would go for the extra range which is more noticeable that the video shows - and the battery state LED is good to have too. I wouldn't expect the bezel paintwork to degrade particularly without the spikes.
I have the TK16 V2 and I love it! One of the best tactical torch on the market right next to my nitecore p20i edc rotation. I gotta say tho .. just the extra candela on the TK20 far outweighs your complaints about the "possible" fail points. But you are forgetting Fenix is a high quality torch 3000 lumens with almost 60k candela is insane for that compact size. I just purchased mines and excited for the TK20 V2. BTW, the wife loves the idea because she gets to keep the TK16 V2 😅 Cheers 🍻
Totally agree. Clear, Concise and not drawn out or long winded. It's why I find myself coming back time and time again. Along with Jon being the godfather of UK EDC of course.
Not replacing my Nitecore P20iX… it’s max 4000 lumens on turbo which produces an almost “daylight-like” flood light and all features just seems better.
Good review as usual Jon, the best UK based channel of this type, but you need to take a look at the new the new-ish PD36R Pro. I have just tested it side by side with the TK20 v2, as I ordered both from Amazon (to replace the PD36R I have the side switch on the normal PD36R is very annoying) and you can’t tell any difference in performance - same led and battery, virtually same brightness (can’t tell unless both are on next to each other, even then it’s no more useful), beam pattern and spread, same tail switches and operation, same clip etc. Basically the PD36R pro is the same torch, but its slightly shorter and 40g lighter. It doesn’t have the same so-called ‘tactical’ head, but no one needs that away (even in my job as cop) and the smaller head on the PD mean it will slip in a pocket and is a better EDC. The PD36R pro is also a bit cheaper at the moment to. I also carry mine on a molle tac-vest every day and the little extra weight and size of the TK20r just tips it into the too big category. I honestly reckon if you tried it you would prefer it from an EDC standpoint mate.
I have both this light and the Olight Warrior X3 for tactical lights. I vastly prefer the X3. It has a proper strike bezel/glass breaker, a super simple back tail switch, good heat sink, longer throw than the Fenix, waterproof, and it has a removable finger striking ring. I always choose it over my Fenix. Not the Warrior Mini 2, which is a side button, slightly smaller light.
Nitecore is Encore. I have the P20iX and it is awesome. This flashlight is very well built and I have had no problems with buttons locations as I always use the tactical holster that came with it. The flashlight does get hot within seconds in turbo and strobe modes. These are very expensive flashlights but is well worth their price tags because of their defense features and because they are rechargeable, which means they buy themselves.
Great video as ever Jon. Lots of detail and great shots of the torch. It’s ticks almost every box for me. I love the two tail switches on some Klarus lights, the hidden charging port on some streamlights and it’s all black 😍 Great to Fenix incorporating all my favourite features in a light. Bit big for my purposes however but if I ever have the spare cash I think I’d buy one. Thanks Jon 👍🏻
Great review as always. 👍 I personally prefer my TK16 V2.0. If the USB charging socket goes bad, just replace the battery. And the silver ring makes it a bit easier to locate in low light situations.
I can see where having the battery testing LED concealed would be a good idea on a tactical flashlight. Also, moving away from the Tungsten ring to all black makes the newer Fenix model all the more stealthy.
Thank you for your reviews! Excellent as always! Which is your favorite? Nitecore Olight Fenix (Other, I missed one). I’m all Nitecore. P10iX 4000 lumen is my pick
Wow I appreciate all that you do. Because of your chanel I've been getting a lot of EDC gear. I don't really use everything but it's fun collecting. Tale care from Montréal, Québec
Really not a fan of the light remembering the last used mode. For genuine professional use it needs to be a UI that jumps straight to maximum output for when the user immediately needs a lot of light. A secondary switch either on the side or back that will let you get to a low or memory mode is my preference for a second mode, as you are generally in less of a rush to access a low light mode. Jon is right about needing to have a simple UI but the unmentioned additional point is that it must be consistent every time. No use to need a lot of light quickly only to jump to the lowest mode you used at the end of your shift the night before to look under the car seat!
I absolutely love Fenix lights but I have told them to address the biggest drawback to their “tactical” lights- there needs to be a way to instantly get to TURBO or at least high. They should release a version WITHOUT memory mode so the light always starts in turbo OR give us a way to program 2 different modes - daily and tactical similar to what Nitecore and Klarus do on several models. Models like the PD36 TAC, TK11 TAC, that use their other tailcap are great, but would be nice to see their dual button tailcaps be able to have 2 different modes.
Lol I bought this just a few days ago. I upgraded from a tk35 2015 version and it just knocks it out of the ballpark. The more I’m exposed to Fenix, the more loyal I am becoming to the brand. Being able to click through the levels is far superior to needing to hold down the switch and wait like ace beam and thrunite.
tk20r v2, nitecore p23i, acebeam p18, which one is the winner on high mode for throw and spill and run time. Am I missing any others that can compete with these?
Very good presentation! On the other hand, I'm always frustrated when videos talk about tactical flashlight with a glass-breaking head without putting it to the test. Having a feeling on it would be useful I think, no? Correct me if I'm wrong but the little button makes a clicking noise when you press it? If so there is not that on the TK16 v2.
It would have been better if they had replaced 30 Lumen with 3 or 5 Lumen - Moonlight instead, and that it would have lasted between 50 - 60 days! Thanks for the review and comparison! ☺❤
The instant strobe is cool but the ability to instant turbo is the most important aspect of a tactical light which surefire, streamlight, olight, klarus, acebeam and literally every tactical product from these companies has. Fenix doesn't have that and that is a big no no. No matter how good your tactical light was built, if the UI is garbage, the whole light is just a fancy toy. I'm not talking about instant turbo using memory mode, instant turbo means in any situation, in any mode, you hit the main switch, the light blast its full power, no hassle.
I have a layman's question, in every video I see the person shows the flashlight charging cable, where it connects to the flashlight and they never show where the other end goes. Do I still have to buy a charger in addition to the flashlight? If I have to buy it, is it a proprietary charger from the company or can it be used by anyone?
Thanks Jon. Love Fenix, great quality. My first decent torch was the PD22 (a mini 'tactical' light). But for the value and features, I've moved to Olight. The Warrior 3S is brilliant. Magnetic charging, battery indicator you can actually see, direct turbo and moonlight mode. I can't see any benefits of having this TK.
Excellent review Mr Gadget! I own this bad ass torch and love it! Only thing missing is moon mode! I'm not sure why Fenix refuses to incorporate this into their torches because many of their customes have been asking for years now! Other than that this thing is pure tactical kick ass!!
@@JonGadget ... It seems a good idea that the little coloured LED light gets hidden behind the collar, because when being used at night it would make the user more difficult to spot, which might be advantageous for police, military and so on. 👍
I'm not sure if I agree with lightweight and compact as part of "Tactical" description. My issued Streamlight Stinger isn't anywhere near compact nor lightweight but it probably sees more "tactical" work than most so called "tactical" lights that people really just buy for mundane tasks. Sure a "tactical" light can be compact and lightweight, I just think that it's not necessarily a requirement.
There is a "rush to the lumens" that I don't like. 3000 lumens for a few seconds... I prefer less powerful and technically exasperated models. My Fenix TK11 TAC has only 1600 lumens but has a more stable power curve. Thanks for video
I bought a Fenix PD35 TAC awhile back. Unfortunately, it has been an annoyance rather than a pleasure to use because it flickers every time I turn it on. I have to shake it several times and/or turn it on/off several times before it works. When it does work it is great.
you know given all the flashlight videos you do you really need a lumen tester so you can really give us the goods on the specs on these things talk is cheap but i dont trust the specs unelss i can see someone testing that out with the gear to prove the lumens i know its more then lumens so you have said but it all works together as well.
I've always wondered - how genuinely useful is a strobe mode? Even for the police/military? The skeptic in me thinks its more of a marketing gimmick from the torch companies and the scenarios where a strobe would be appreciably more useful than a really bright mode is more Hollywood than real life. Nonetheless great review as always and still a really nice looking torch.
I don't know for sure because I've never used strobe in anger to say deter an attacker - a very bright light or strobe ought to have some effect if it's unexpected I would say though....
I do armed security overnight and use strobe all the time to disorient confrontational people and signal for different things. I’ve used it to signal my local police departments helicopter as well as officers so they can get to my location without my communication I’ve used it to direct traffic. I won’t purchase a light without strobe it’s a function I’m not willing to compromise on. Strobe causes different affects on your eyes than a constant beam. Constant beam will cause spots in the place you got shined in on your eye when you look away strobe will cause you to see spots all over
You mentioned Fire/Rescue in your video. I used to sell firefighting equipment (everything but the big red trucks), and remember that flashlights have to be Underwriters lab listed as being explosion proof for liability purposes. Waterproof, I found out, is not the same as having the UL logo on a light.
@@JonGadget Yes, the same. They rig up the light in an explosion-safe container with mechanical devices to turn it on. Then flood the chamber with an explosive gas mixture, usually methane, then turn the light on. And wait for the big boom. "Where's the kaboom?" - Marvin the Martian quote.
No low, no direct to turbo and the turbo doesn't last long at all. Fenix struggle with turbo run times like with my old pd40r v2 which couldn't access turbo if the battery was 85% or less. Some what unusable. Nitecore MH25s would be my choice, less lumens but better throw with better spacing.
When it comes to professional use having no port on the body is a huge advantage. When you use a flashlight in hrash environment beeing sealed is priority number one also charging port gets damaged over time especially if you use it every day. It is much nicer to simly replace the battery or have and extra battery instead of buying a new flash light. I do have a flash light with a charging port and after one year of use already has problems including poor connection. It is not fenix but similar style. For non comercial use charging port is convenient but for comercial use it is a pain. I am guessing this is why the old model is available even in 2023.
The Tk20R v2 gets hot too fast and steps out of turbo too quickly,, after about 40 seconds..... The tk16v2 doesnt step down like that and puts out as much light. The 16 is a better choice.
Am I the only one who thinks these new lights coming out with 2000+ lumens on turbo are just trying to do too much? I just returned a Fenix pd36r pro because yes it can achieve 2800 lumens.. for about 30 seconds before getting ridiculously hot and stepping down. If I needed that much output I wouldn’t be using a single 21700 battery light. Anywhere between 1600 and 2000 lumens would be great and having such a gap between high and turbo is impractical in my opinion.
Hey Jon, looks like rovyvon came out with a new generation of the aurora series including your favorite A8. They have a magnetic base and usb-c charging! Any plans to review these?
If they would just use a nice high CRI LED like the SST-20 Fenix lights would be the best on earth. But the low CRI craptastic LEDs they use really bring it down. This is a real shame since they have such good build quality.
the difference in my eyes is very small - most people will use this for their homes. the tk16 works just as well for that in my opinion - and its about $20 dollars cheaper. i really dont like having to use a type c connector though. im sure not everybody has access to a type c cable. i have an old LED flashlight that you put into a charger and plug into the wall. seems much more use friendly to me. but, none the less - i'm going to buy the tk16 off of amazon. 😁
I prefer long throw lights so I really like my HT30R... almost a mile throw lep flashlight,, but you have to be willing to toss out about 270.00 dollars US for one.

I find side switches can be fiddly and longer range is a bonus
Yeah I love my Olight M20SX Javelot due to direct turbo mode.
Lovely touch. Ordered via your link. Thanks.
I found it online at Amazon. It comes an organizer. I don't see a holster for it. Dosent look like it comes with it.
very cool and comprehensive flashlight review!
Excellent review Mr Gadget! I own this bad ass torch and love it! Only thing missing is moon mode! I'm not sure why Fenix refuses to incorporate this into their torches because many of their customes have been asking for years now! Other than that this thing is pure tactical kick ass!!
totally agree
@@JonGadget ... It seems a good idea that the little coloured LED light gets hidden behind the collar, because when being used at night it would make the user more difficult to spot, which might be advantageous for police, military and so on. 👍
Nice review, each details are very clearly
How’s this compare to the PD36R pro?
What about superfire brand ? I got many of them and I am very satisfied please, make a video please with top 10 superfire led flashlights ....
Hi, this one to compare with pd36r which one is better?
I wouldn't have a side switch on a tactical light
I love my TK16 but I am having problems with my battery right now and it's really frustrating especially since I'm moving and can't order a new one.
I bought a Fenix PD35 TAC awhile back. Unfortunately, it has been an annoyance rather than a pleasure to use because it flickers every time I turn it on. I have to shake it several times and/or turn it on/off several times before it works. When it does work it is great.
Why not send it back? It has a warranty…
@@wrenboy2726 You're right of course, but I can't find the receipt & I don't know how long the warranty is. My mistake.
Is there a general time frame of when companies release new models of lights?
i am waiting for PD40R ver 3 hopefully with some improvement.on the rotary switch.
Another very good, informative video. Thanks!
thank you Dennis
you know given all the flashlight videos you do you really need a lumen tester so you can really give us the goods on the specs on these things talk is cheap but i dont trust the specs unelss i can see someone testing that out with the gear to prove the lumens i know its more then lumens so you have said but it all works together as well.
I check they are within limits based on research - they are always tested by others - an integrating sphere is an expensive piece of kit.
Constant beam will cause spots in the place you got shined in on your eye when you look away strobe will cause you to see spots all over
@@bigchungus9046 good perspective from a real world user
@@JonathanChan333 it is very applicable in a self defense situation especially somewhere weapons are not permitted and it’s strictly enforced
I am looking for no side switch knife and this is worth consideration. still don't like that it will not stand on its end.
check out Nitecore P23i
This or the nitecore p20ix?
Can you please make videos about edc knifes?(that are not part of a victorinox)
how much sir?
You mentioned Fire/Rescue in your video. I used to sell firefighting equipment (everything but the big red trucks), and remember that flashlights have to be Underwriters lab listed as being explosion proof for liability purposes. Waterproof, I found out, is not the same as having the UL logo on a light.
Interesting to hear. I've heard that referred to as 'intrinsically safe' for environments with an explosion risk.
WOW >>>>>>>> Thank you
Excellent review. Thank you.
thanks for the feedback 😊
Think this is going to be my WML for my X-95. Already have an ALG-0O mount, so all is need is the AER-05 pressure switch.
i am sure that some understand your abbreviations. I don't.
Why not buy the power TAC and get the holster for free? For the same price the power tac is looking a lot better
Have you reviewed the fenix lr35r?
Makes no sense how Fenix says the lack of tungsten tips makes no difference in glass breaking...
I'm a big fan of Nitecore but a side switch is not ideal for a tactical light
@@JonGadget then the tk16 v2, holds turbo much longer and controls heat much better.
@@JonGadget the p20ix has no side switch tho
Can you do it for the best keychain flashlight ?
On this list 👍
@@JonGadget nice cant wait to see it when its out :)
How does this rate against Olight Warrior 3s or x3?
I have a tactical pen from them, not expensive and quite nice. Conversation starter as i found out lol
go to know
When it comes to professional use having no port on the body is a huge advantage.
Good point but in this version it is extremely well protected
Great video. I'm more of a nitecore guy
I'm a big fan of Nitecore
@@JonGadget I really like the nitecore mh12s. And love your videos please keep making more excellent videos
@@JonGadget do you have and review of battery charges?
Great video. The improvement to the beam is reason enough to get the 20 over the 16.
The Tk20R v2 gets hot too fast and steps out of turbo too quickly,, after about 40 seconds..... The tk16v2 doesnt step down like that and puts out as much light. The 16 is a better choice.
Excellent review💚💚👍👍
thank you 😊
A flashlight bezel is now a "strike" bezel.. to be used for self defense and breaking glass 😀 Maybe on my off days when I'm resting my ninja skills 🤣
Does rovyon have a small flash light thar supports over 1,000 lumens over 40mins?
Have you ever try other tactical flashlight? I love Fenixlight, but there are other good tactical lights out there.
see some of my other reviews - do you have a particular one in mind that is better in your view?
If they would just use a nice high CRI LED like the SST-20 Fenix lights would be the best on earth. But the low CRI craptastic LEDs they use really bring it down. This is a real shame since they have such good build quality.
.... Better to clean the lens of the Flashlight prior to Review. Looks much better when absolutely clean. 🙂
Good point!
Cool
But no candela info
Trying to get a balance of detail vs time - can include in future in depth reviews 👍
the difference in my eyes is very small - most people will use this for their homes. the tk16 works just as well for that in my opinion - and its about $20 dollars cheaper. i really dont like having to use a type c connector though. im sure not everybody has access to a type c cable. i have an old LED flashlight that you put into a charger and plug into the wall. seems much more use friendly to me. but, none the less - i'm going to buy the tk16 off of amazon. 😁
Looks awesome 👏
How many lumens is the damn thing?
Haha! Looks like a cheap copy of the Nextorch TA30, guys ;-)
😅
I prefer long throw lights so I really like my HT30R... almost a mile throw lep flashlight,, but you have to be willing to toss out about 270.00 dollars US for one.
You sure this isn’t Phoenix flashlight infomercial?
Do you believe in the "moon landing garbage"? In the intro, you have an audio snippet from the Apollo landing on the moon set at the production studio.
if not broken don't fix it . new is not as good
All tactical brands basically copy Klarus XT11X and XT21X
I have a tactical toilet 🚽 it’s amazing my poops are done and sorted very efficiently
It's weird that my phone can withstand higher drops than a flashlight that is much more low tech.
