I have made an error on the run times for the Ruben X-0 (sorry about this) The 1LM mode should last for 130hrs (not the 30 mentioned in the video) and it is the 50LM mode that lasts for 50hrs (I mentioned 150LM which is not correct).

I’ve been EDCing flashlights for over 40 years so I’ll share what I have learned.
    1. Always always have it on you, this eliminates anything too heavy or bulky.
    2. Keep it simple, you don’t need super bright or strobe. Just either one brightens or maybe two.
    3. I never use alkaline batteries anymore. I’ve ruined many flashlights because the battery leaks and expands and gets stuck in the light. Lithium is the way to go. Either rechargeable or single, AA or 123 batteries.
    4) tie a little paracord loop on the ring so you can hold flashlight in mouth when both hands are needed. I do this all the time.

to point nr 1: thats i never pocket carry a flashlight. I have 3 small key chain and 1 baton 3 gen. Even the baton 3 is a key chain flashlight. Maybe i buy a tactical Nitecore i20 or just a bigger reflector with big battery included.

That’s why I love my Sofirn SC21. Small and simple. Fits in a pocket or on a cap. Only 2 modes, 30 or 1000 lumens. Magnetic base with rechargable C connection. Perfect for me! 😊 £34 on Amazon

Getting a flashlight that has a 2 way clip, so you can position it on the visor of a baseball cap is far better than holding it in your mouth. I do agree with your other points.

    • @NoReply28
      @NoReply28 Рік тому

Point 2 isn't really good advice... Strobe is important in an emergency situation and having a very bright light is quite useful. Most affordable flashlight nowadays come with different brightness and strobe. They have memory setting, so it not like you have to go through all the modes everytime. So just get a flashlight that have all of that. It better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it.

I always enjoy how logically thought out and presented your reviews are. Flashlights are a knowledge area I’ve recently began to focus on so your method of comparison is very helpful as a template when shopping around.
A few weeks ago I snagged the Acebeam Poklite in aluminum on sale for $19.95. It’s not the brightest or most feature rich, but I bought it to store in an emergency kit so value and simple function that I wouldn’t have to learn were top priorities. Taking a regular AA battery as a backup was also a useful feature.

I love your videos ! As a hiker / backpacker, I have a hard time considering any device that requires a proprietary charging cord. It is difficult to consider purchasing a light, or any other device which requires a proprietary charging cord because not only does it mean carrying an extra cord, but it just lends itself to getting lost (making the device un-usable till a replacement cord is sourced). I really wish manufacturers would just standardize to a USB-C. Am I alone in this?

    There is no tail switch,
    just the side switch.
It is very easy to operate, is very powerful with instant access to turbo.
It is about 118 mm in length so longer than the PD25.

I love Fenix = most accurate tail switch in an emergency or tactical situation. I own a TK15, TK15 UE and the PD25R. All built like a Tank & durable. Fenix remembers the 800 lm mode, when clicked off . . . so you have Instant access to 800 lumens. It remembers the last mode used.

    Hello Jonathan,
many thanks for the decent and very interesting comparison. It was thrilling to follow the pros and cons of the different flashlights.
Anyway my daily compansion has been the Acebeam Pokelit AA for a while now and I'm more than happy with it. There were a couple of aspects that proved gamechangers for me:
    - USB-C chargebility which is kind of key element for my EDC stuff
    - slim design which is in my opinion vital for carrying in the jeans pocket day by day
    - the two way clip which holds it inside the pocket or with hands free on my cap
    - a budget friendly price since I found the black version for less than 30 EUR
Therefore I was (and am) ready to accept the drawbacks which you pointed out accurately.
Allbeit the Roxyvon might be a future alternative.
    Cheers
    Stefan

Hey , great review , man ! Very informative , with ALL pertinent info given on all the lights , video demonstration of high output modes ( and later , side by side comparison of those videos !) , complete feature rundown with demonstration and location of same ,AND (!BONUS!) camera angles that actually let me see what you are describing , which is always appreciated ! Just a stand up job , all round !
By the way , my picks were the same....I liked all the features on the Top Pick , but especially for the small lights . The red light I find particularly useful when cracking safes at night and the UV allows you to confirm authenticity of the goods once in . These small lights have MULTIPLE modes , each , with the RED having FOUR ?! That is a lot of USEFUL features on this flashlight...so I think you would get good ACTUAL use from it . I thought the Runner Up's right angle design and overall look was very cool ! Though not as many features as #1 , just the unique look of this one , and it's long battery life made it my #2 , as well.....the tritium slots were icing on the cake . Have never done that , but it is a cool option for consideration ! Thanks again for excellent vid !

My Rovyvon is a the A8 model (about $38), which definitely deserves/holds it's place in my edc. I can keep it handy on my keyring without removing the 'pocket' clip. It is probably one of THE best all-around lights I have ever had/ seen. That said, my 'tactical' choice is the NITECORP P20iX @$120) but fair warning, it has melted pocket holes in Eddie Bauer guide pants. However, it can certainly double as a hand-warmer, and you can unscrew the barrel slightly (though it's pretty stiff) to prevent accidental 'ignition' in your pocket. The P20iX does come w a great 'click-in' plastic holster w belt clip, and movable pocket clip, so those provide additional carry options to prevent melted pockets. I also liked the much smaller Klarus XT1C as a 'tactical' option, but it does not have a (crenelated) bezel, while the P20iX has an 'industrial strength' bezel, but is nearly twice the size & weight of the Klarus.

One thing Fenix does right is the battery and charging status lights follow the typical standards for energy gauge with green for full and red for empty. Many flashlights are random and confusing when having multiple flashlights from different companies, some using blue or purple even for battery status. I agree all these are a little big for pocket use. I use the RovyVon A5X or the Fenix E01 V2.0. Very simple and might be the smallest AAA flashlight out there that has modes. It has extremely good run time for a AAA.

I have both, but the no-brain on-off simplicity of the i3E EOS, its single powerful beam, its robustness, and the fact it runs (for ages) off a battery which you can replace pretty much anywhere on the planet means its the one always on my keyring. I like the A8 for its amazing features but the multiple button-presses required just make it too complex for EDC for me. PS. I didn't know much about Imalent, and will be checking them out.

I use the Rovyvon A8 all the time, but I certainly couldn’t say it’s simple to use with so much packed into a single button 🙂. My father carries a torch everywhere and he loves the simplicity of the Olight i3e.

I found a rovyvon aurora clone on Temu and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Usb c, luminous shell, side light, uv light, red light (plus blinking options) and another mode which would be illegal to have on a car or something cause it flashes red and blue. It has several brightness levels and has a magnetic base unlike the original. It's only 400 lumens and doesn't have any sort of clip unfortunately but the thing only cost $3.50 which is insane considering the old rovyvon arouras with micro USB and a 350 lumen output can still run you like $20

Hello Jon, I wondered if I could ask for your thoughts about LED warmth/coolness these days. I remember in your original RovyVon A8 video you mentioned preferring the warmer Nichia LED option, at the expense of some output power. Do you generally prefer a brighter-white LED these days, and if so, what changed your mind? Asking since I’m thinking of upgrading to the new USB-C A8X, so the question is fresh in my mind again, thank you.

    • @JonGadget
      @JonGadget  Рік тому

Good question. If accurate colour edition is important then the high CRI is going to be a better bet. I've found though that I prefer maximum illumination and visible range which points to the whiter light around 650nm. So that is what I usually go for given the choice. It is a colder light though. Hope that helps.

If you want a EDC friendly flashlight with really good battery efficiency, then the Nitecore MT1A is really good. It is the official NATO "backup flashlight", so its not just me who loves this flashlight. It has a somewhat focused beam, so the 5 lumen setting gives 280 candela, which is ACTUALLY "good enough" for hiking. A single AA battery gives 60 hours on this mode. The 22 lumen/755 candela is the perfect "medium" brightness, and last for 18 hours. The 55 lumen/1500 candela setting last for 5,5 hours, and is probably the brightness level most people prefer. I enjoy more dim lights when im night hiking, so i usually stick to the 5 or 22 lumen settings. You go to turbo mode by twisting the head, which gives you 180 lumen/3350 candela for 1,5 hours. This means you can switch back and forth between your favorite setting and the Turbo mode, without having to cycle through other settings. The power switch is at the end cap, and this is also used for switching modes, so you will never have to fumble to find buttons in the dark with this flashlight. For about $5 you can get the light diffuser cap, which makes it into a really good worklight, and they also got red, green, and blue color filters, if you are into that stuff.

Correction about the A28 battery. It IS replaceable. RovyVon has a separate item listing for that. Unfortunately, it's priced at $30 USD! That's more than half the price of the torch... and really, but the time you need a new battery, you'd probably be looking at upgrading anyway. Also, at 6:15 you say the maximum output is 8,000 lumens... and it's actually 1,000 lumens.

You also made an error pertaining to the ace beam light. It has last mode memory. So if the last time you used it it was on turbo, it will be on turbo the next time you turn it on. It will do the same thing for all 3 settings. So you do have a direct to turbo option. I own the ace beam and have used it as a work light for the past 4 months.

You forgot to mention perhaps the coolest feature of the Wuben X0, which is its CUSTOM MODES. If you do a "short press + long press" on the button, it will allow you to change the light intensity on the Moonlight, Low, Medium, High, and Turbo.
    Moonlight is 1-15 lumen
    Low is 15-50 lumen
    Med is 50-150 lumen
    High is 150-300 lumen
Turbo is 300-900 lumen for the Samsung LH351D version, or 300-1100 on the Osram P9 version.
The Samsung version has a lot better CRI, so if you enjoy realistic colors, then go with the Samsung 👍

I got an Olantern Classic 2 Pro last month when it was on sale. The one with the vintage copper look because I wanted to have something that also looks nice on a night stand. I also spontaneously decided to buy the Baton 3 Pro, to check it out.
I've been quite impressed with those lights, which convinced me to replace my Fenix E03R with an Olight I1R 2 Pro - the Fenix got inadvertently switched on too often for my liking. I also left an Olight I3E EOS on a keychain at my parents' place, coupled with a pair of Fenix E12s after I found out that almost all of their flashlights got ruined by leaky alkaline batteries. They're woefully underprepared for blackouts.
Anyway, the Olantern is a really nice lamp that I can recommend to anyone, and it can be recharged via USB-C. The Haloop from Olight would be a good alternative, too. And if you want a lantern that runs on batteries, then the Olantern comes in a Lite version that uses those.
