By far my football hero... Had a chance to meet him at my High School signed a Lion's pennet and hat for me. Thank you for this he is severely underrated at a dying position
I was a fullback in highschool and I based my playing off this guy and Mike Alstott from Tampa Bay. Football just isn't like this anymore. I miss the hard-nosed days of heavy hitters when everything wasn't a penalty
The two toughest positions to play back in the day were linebacker and fullback. I still remember my high school coach saying that you need to be a bad ass mf to play both
I’m a Bears fan but one of my favorite players in the NFL was the Lions Schlesinger . He gave the Bears fits not only with his running and pass catching but with his blocking , he was a freakin beast . Always loved when he and Urlacher went against each other , Corey made his life miserable and very few if any in the NFL could say that . My kind of player , D linemen in this era would hate playing him twice a year .
Man I miss smash mouth football that Nebraska was known for. I hope we can get back to being like this. I know college football has changed drastically. But I still love it
88 toss was a fullbacks dream 😎😎😎 i remember one time they left a small corner for me and I lifted his feet up like 3 feet in air in front of my sideline
Great football player, he absolutely drove a stake through Miami's heart in the Orange bowl. He along with Tom Rathman and Brook Berringer were the living embodiment of Nebraska Football under Tom Osbourne.
One of the great blocking fullbacks of the 90s who never got nearly as much recognition for it as he deserved. A shop-wrecking downhill bowling ball on O, & an absolute monster on special teams, Corey will always be legendary for how busy he kept Lions equipment managers replacing the facemasks he was constantly shattering in practice. ❤️🦁✊
I remember late in his Detroit Lions career they had a little joke about him concerning the running back position. "Cory, I have some good news and bad news for you. The good news is that you're the fastest running back on the team. The bad news is that you're the fastest running back on the team."
I remember reading in a book about the 94-97 huskers, "Cory Schlesinger's picture should have been in the dictionary next to the word 'Football Player'".
It always amazed me how Nebraska was so dominant with no passing game at all, just about all running and smash mouth. I remember those 94-95 teams just made teams want to give up.
Correct if I am wrong, but didn’t the announcers in that Orange Bowl game against Miami talk about how he never had lost yardage run ever in his career at Nebraska?
That’s really awesome man. He’s so beloved to this day in Detroit. You say his name during any Thanksgiving game, you’ll hear the whole family go into how much they miss him. So what was he in HS, mostly a Mike linebacker (and still fullback on O? Or tailback)? You stay home & go to OSU after ballin out w/ Corey, or you go somewhere to keep playin next level too or anything?
@@justinmix143 He was the all state captain as a MIKE LB and in our offense was actually the starting RB. He wasn’t the all state captain on offense because there was another very good RB in the state that year named Calvin Jones who went on to play with the Raiders a while. Jones and his Omaha Central team ended Cory’s senior season with a first round playoff defeat too. He was a two or three time state champion wrestler at 189 pounds as well. Just can’t say enough about Cory or his family. I have both a Nebraska and Detroit uniform with his name and number. Trying to get them autographed but never been able to track him down. I think he’s actually working for the NFL now.
@@bryanm2495 wow man-that’s really awesome. I thought he went to high school in Columbus, Ohio too, so thanks for the info. Makes a lot more sense why he ended up at Nebraska now lol. I know much smarter football minds than me think it’s a waste of a roster spot but the disappearances of FBs from the NFL is frustrating. Yes, it’s a pass first league, but teams still run a good % of snaps. And who better to help in pass pro?
It's all about creating space and mismatches now. A power running team in the pros now would be like Army is in college, severely outdated and not very competitive. I prefer the old days myself and real football vs the track and field event if has become.
Nebraska on Steriods was real. My professor in college was an FBI agent. He told me they were being investigated after the Florida championship game. Osborne retired and ran for Senate. Nothing was done about it. Nebraska was never the same.
This was a disaster for the Lions, Every defense knew when Cory was on the field , Mr xyzo r2 l2 r1 r2. L3 and Oh Yeah R3, Was going to get the ball🐯🏈💣
Bring back the FULLBACKS

We rode our fullback in high school to a state title! Props to any other fullbacks out there
We need this back. Nothing like a team with a good bruising fb

Fullback... the middle linebacker of the offense. Respect to my fellow fullbacks.

If he wasn't a Lion he would've been all pro.
Schlesinger is my drafting teacher
nice guy?
Such awesomesess to see a highlight of such a random player. LOVE IT! Dude was a MONSTER!
I hate Huskers/Niners, but best FB is Tom Rathman. Gr8 blocker and receiver outta the backfield. Perfect fit with Montana n Craig in that WC Offense
Dude was a Beast from day 1 when u went to Nebraska and then in Detroit in the NFL.
Bring the fullback baby!!!!! Yessssah!!!
The guy was hard to stop. He was built like a fire hydrant with legs and arms.

My favorite FB ever
Cory is from my hometown.
I really wish the huskers would bring back the fullback position.
I Loved Corey At Nebraska Clearing The Way For Lawrence Phillips And In Detroit Catching/Blocking And Obliterating Linebackers For Barry Sanders👌🏿.
Fullbacks are a forgotten tool in offensive plays nowadays...

In 1995 these Husker FBs had 870 yds rushing. Through 9 games the Husker FBs have just over 900.
