Can you make an Instant Legolas, Rufus, Genghis Khan etc with a HELICAL magazine? with or without pre-tensioning of the magazine spring by rotating a handcrank? :D
Most people don't know that the Barnett Commando was used in large numbers, by the Serbian army, against Kosovo Liberation Army forces. During the Kosovo war in the 1990s. It was shipped in by the truck loads by the British, to get around the Arms embargo. It was used for Counter sniper operations & ambushes. Pretty amazing.

Same here! I live in a city so I knew that even if I could get the money it would just be wasted. It was nice to see it in action in this video though.
I had a 220lbs one of these back in 1987 and it was good fun, main problem I found was the large bolt drop at anything over 30 metres but I used it around a field shoot back in 1988 and I managed to hit a large Boer cut-out at 113 metres. The alloy bolts I had bent and dented very easily and I ended up reducing the point weight to about 85 and putting shark's fins on to try and reduce the drag. You will find the bow is made of an aluminum alloy with brass which was always a pain in the butt to keep clean. I used a wax rail lube back then, but I would say to use hi-friction crossbow serving which is available from Bow Sports in the UK. There are many things going for this bow but because of its design limitations to do with the power stroke it went to the wall. I put a meglight on mine with a 3-9 x 40 scope. Keep an eye on the trigger unit mine had plastic outer spring retainers with a central steel pin. The plastic is not up to the loads an can crack which can be very dangerous, I made some more for myself but please check that. I sold mine back in 1993 to get a mig welder and now I have a Horton Legacy 225. Keep up the good work I enjoy your Vids best wishes Owen.
Hi Joerg! I have a Barnett Commando with 220lbs bow and I love it! I had it for 35 years and by lubricating & "dental flossing" the original string, I still have not changed the original yet! Talking about quality:)
I stumbled in this video by accident since I have just purchased an old Barnett Commando like Yours and I have no words to thank You for the literature (depliants/manulas/brochures) that You have shared with us. Gruß und Kuss!

That brochure brought back some memories. I had the barnett trident in my teens, desperately wanted the demon safari but I was bad at saving money. I still have my barnett black widow slingshot eqipped with theraband blue tubing.
Ingenious. I like the review of this old design, great idea, do more please! Your word is good enough on shape. My son uses this stuff, it is pretty good. 55 is not old.

the commando was a great little crossbow. i got the 175 lb. version here in the usa when i was around 15 years old (over 30 years ago) it was a lot of fun and pretty accurate, but the string life was greatly affected by the cocking mechanism so i usually cocked it using a piece of rope to make a foot stirrup . thanks for the trip down memory lane !
Your new crossbow design looks great! It’s shape, especially with the front grip, reminds me of my my favorite vintage aircraft, the P-40 Warhawk. I love crossbows and the idea of a full sized repeating crossbow is very appealing.
That crossbow brings back memories! I used to see it in outdoor and military surplus catalogs when I was a kid. I always wanted one but living in a city gave me little opportunity to shoot something like that. It nice to finally see one in action.
My brother has one of those here in the US, we've shot hundreds of bolts through the Barnett Commando. :) I'm looking forward to getting an Adder and I look forward to seeing your new repeating crossbow based on the Commando action.
Joerg, have you ever considered using a REVERSE crossbow design? :) Wouldn't that solve a lot of issues? #1) Since the bow is in the middle, balance is better #2) The string doesn't contact the stock at all and operates directly in line with the string and projectile, thus, less wear on string and less power lost to friction #3) Potentially longer power stroke #4) Bow is BEHIND the magazine, which may make design easier I do realise there are very few bow limbs made for a reverse crossbow so that may be a problem, but worth thinking about? :) And thanks for another great video! :) Almost bought a Commando back in the day but they were very expensive, alas. And yeah, from examining one in a shop they were very heavy! but then again that sturdy build probably is why they lasted so long (but all Barnett crossbows back then had very severe wear on the strings!)
I just love the brass in this, Joerg can you please build something that is as functional and as automatic and as powerful as the adder but with traditional looking materials like wood, brass, leather, gun blued steal, and chrome whatever. Also allow it to take 15” bolts in the magazine as well as a telescopic sight. Your work is amazing and you are a true innovator but I’ve never seen one thing that I just fall in love with. I like things that look good as well as perform well.
My cousin bought two commandos, one for himself and one for me! We had such a great time shooting them! My cousin and myself were in our middle 30's, when we owned the commandos. I Hadn't thought about owning them for all these years until I just happened upon the video. They were very accurate and powerful, for the time. We used them on my father's property, just for shooting at the STANLEY HIPS TYPE TARGETS AND ANOTHER KIND, MADE FROM BURLAP, WHICH WAS VERY EASY TO PULL OUT THE BOLTS. IT TOOK SOME DOING TO REMOVE THEM FROM THE STANLEY HIPS TYPE.
My father has had a Barnett Commando since I was a child. The cocking hooks would wear through the string very quickly, so he put some heat shrink over them. It was accurate and shot fast for it's time.
Yes, I have used the 175lbs version of this cross bow . Excellent for big game up to 400kg. The weak point in the 175lbs bow were the moorings for the bow string. I moulded brass end pieces out of brass and over came this major problem. My bow strings would come off those cheap plastic bow string holders and unravel. It was difficult to find heavy bolts in those days and the only solution was to cast brass pieces to hold the string. The grooves had to be deepened to hold captive the bow string. I very soon switched over to a 90lbs compound long bow and never regretted it. I still have my Golden Eagle compound bow, but alas got rid of the problematic cross bow. You’re lucky you have a weak version of this bow , for otherwise those ridiculous plastic pieces on the bow would have snapped off. The wurfärme endungen were squared off and offered no solid support to the hollow shoulders ! No wonder those plastic bits were sent to the happy hunting grounds within a few shots. A very fine cross bow , constructed badly by the british ; just like their cars.
Just bought 5 packages from your store, mostly for supporting your channel. I am already eating collagen daily, so it doesn't change anything for me by buying it from you. If there are any bonus effects, I'll take it. Doesn't hurt to give it a go I guess.
I had one of these, 220lb prod was available in the UK, mine was 175. It ate strings, and some of the prods would delaminate, which could be dangerous. I cocked mine differently, forend in left hand, nose on left thigh, and pull towards you. Loved it, but strings breaking and bolts burying themselves in the ground made the fun short-lived.
Good stuff Joerg! An idea for your new crossbow would be to make the front handle/stirrup retractable/extendible, that way it could be longer when in use and giving you much more leverage.
About the break action cocking design, get the geometry on the lever right and you get a let-off offsetting the draw weight. I'm thinking the lever should point almost straight back with the string at full draw.
there was a late 80's maybe early 90's crossbow that was lever cocked and could be rotated to fire traditional or fire vertical like a normal bow. it showed up on Star Trek NG on an episode called Starship Mine. Do you know what this bow was?
Junichiro Yamashita might have, but I remember seeing it sold in a Bass Pro Shops catalog I think. Thought it was the coolest idea but have never been able to find again or any listing of who made it or model.
Got one in my collection too, you should check out the Barnett Thunderbolt, there are two versions (camo with skeletal stock, or black with real wood furniture) a really cool crossbow as it's a bullpup compound bow! I have both versions and another interesting one is the Barnett Trident crossbow pistol with a rotating barrel (well rotating rails).
Joerg, man, you are ripping :D Are you chasing Arnolds physique measurements? But you look fantastic. Regarding the new design, have you ever think about possibility of simple garavityfed up-down magazine? It it is for 5 bolts, it even do not need to replace the sights (they are already pretty high). If you go for 30 arrow straight-magazine, you can ofshot the sights to the side (or make 2 - one on each side). The ultimate crossbow magazine according my mind would be a hollow cylinder with spacers between bolts, turning around another hollow cylinder (similar to revolver), wich does drop/release down only the most downard possitioned bolt, and wich is turned to next position at the end of reloading cycle when the string is already away/primed, using movement/strenght of the reloading mechanism, to proppel the turning for next 4 or more centimeters. Yes, that system would be a pain to design (and would need a TON of pollishing - or redesigning), but will leave you with multiple arrow repeating crossbow, with (basicaly detachable) magazine. Less grounbraking but little bit similar thing for crossbows, as you made for bows. Another possible advantage of this design is that because it does not have a full core (it is hollow), you can aim THROUGH it... AND (another point), if you combine it with a mechanism for reloading the crossbow (with mechanical advantage), like combination of pulleys and teathed winch, you can make a crossbow attachment wich changes the simple crossbow into repeating crossbow with multiple arrow magazine AND significantly reduces the draw resistance (because you can draw it - lets say- on 2-3 times longer distance, therefore close to 3 times less power needed for cocking the crossbow. Can you please give this e-mail of mine a minute of your braintime? I do belive it migtht be woth your time. Your fan from neighbouring state.
Barnett Commando... da haben wir uns früher als Jugendliche die Nase plattgedrückt am Schaufenster vom Waffenladen. Zum Glück konnten wir uns die damals nicht leisten :-)
Hi Joerg, having the magazine below makes more sense to me you can make it as deep as you want and it would stabilize the bow. Put a single telescoping staff on the bottom to hold the bow's weight for added stability when shooting, like a camera monopole works. you could hinge the bow to allow you to orient the bow perpendicular to the monopole for going through bush better. the monopole could make it possible to draw the bow easier. Could you design a survival walking staff/bow?
Hi Joerg, might I suggest you put some heat shrink tubing on the hooks of the cocking mechanism? It would protect the serving and is easily removed, so it would be a non-permanent modification to that collectors item.
barrnett has been out a long time back in 1971 they had the first crossbow that the bolt went through the center of the bow so there wasn't the 5 degree tilt on the string to cut down on the velocity (I had contacted them to see if they would sell be just the bow in 1971)(but they wouldn't) if its the same company they were a US manufacturer.
I was waiting for the break down cocking motion, with the horn of the stock under the armpit, that's the most appealing to me so far . There is a 7 years old video with that motion on UA-cam if someone just searches for barnett commando
I had one of these back in the day, great bow. I would like to find one like you have but i guess now you've brought it to everyone's attention I'll have no chance.

Wouldn't that solve a lot of issues?
#1) Since the bow is in the middle, balance is better
#2) The string doesn't contact the stock at all and operates directly in line with the string and projectile, thus, less wear on string and less power lost to friction
#3) Potentially longer power stroke
#4) Bow is BEHIND the magazine, which may make design easier

Barnett Commando... da haben wir uns früher als Jugendliche die Nase plattgedrückt am Schaufenster vom Waffenladen. Zum Glück konnten wir uns die damals nicht leisten :-)
Hey Joerg, can you make a video on your workout program? that would be great!!!
@@HikuroMishiro I found if. It was the "weaponize yourself" series. That being said, I did not complain about anything.
12:05 Joerg looks like a very buff, happy Steve Jobs
Joerg - Apostle of Slingshots, the holiest authority
Hi Joerg, having the magazine below makes more sense to me you can make it as deep as you want and it would stabilize the bow. Put a single telescoping staff on the bottom to hold the bow's weight for added stability when shooting, like a camera monopole works. you could hinge the bow to allow you to orient the bow perpendicular to the monopole for going through bush better. the monopole could make it possible to draw the bow easier. Could you design a survival walking staff/bow?
You are looking well mate, congratulations.
Hey Joerg long time fan here! just to let you know the union jack in the thumbnail is wrong! it's missing diagonal red lines for northern ireland!
omg im all nostalgic watching that barnett crossbow. I remember drooling over it so many years ago.
Hi Joerg, might I suggest you put some heat shrink tubing on the hooks of the cocking mechanism? It would protect the serving and is easily removed, so it would be a non-permanent modification to that collectors item.
Dang Ian been working out!
He traded his hair for more muscles :-)
barrnett has been out a long time back in 1971 they had the first crossbow that the bolt went through the center of the bow so there wasn't the 5 degree tilt on the string to cut down on the velocity (I had contacted them to see if they would sell be just the bow in 1971)(but they wouldn't) if its the same company they were a US manufacturer.
Ian might be Gun Jesus, but I think Joerg is the patron saint of Crossbows
Growing up I desperately wanted a Barnett Commando. Being in a Bond film made it even cooler :)
Lol the thumbnail and the little Forgotten Weapons references.
I had one of these and lived near one of the factories in the UK and my friend worked there and had one of the mini crossbows by Barnett
Imagine a let me show you its features in shadow of the conqurer movie
As a crazy engineer :D
Reminds me of my favorite gun in the Metro series the Helsing. Would love to see Joerg make that :D
I would love to see the tyhar.
@@isaiahcampbell488 There's actually an air rifle similar in funtion to the Tikhar which is the Seneca Aspen air rifle. Would also love to see Joerg make the Tikhar.
I remember drooling over that as a teenager. Didn't have the money at the time and that was more years ago than I care to mention...
Slingshot Jesus? What's next? Gun Jesus?
I recently bought a Barnett Ranger which is very similar to this only it's stirrup cocked. Nice to see how quick one of this vintage actually is!
Goddammit Joerg, your thumbnail appeared right next to Ian's thumbnail in my sub box and confused me!
