My Red eared slider demolished anubias in the first day I had it in the tank. My turtle doesn’t seem to bother my Java Ferns though. He also loves to eat water lettuce, I’ve been to scared to try duckweed because I’m afraid it will take over my tank lol
I've been using anacharis in my mud turtle/guppy community tank for about 6 months. It's been really durable to the turtle uprooting and shoving it around, I just tuck the roots under a rock, into the sand, or just let it float. It absolutely sucks up the nitrates. Plus the turtle really seems to like climbing through and hiding in the bunches when it gets a little overgrown lol
I recently got a yellow belly slider and I’m a new turtle owner I asked somebody at the pet store how many pellets should I feed him. I was told four pellets a day. My turtle was only getting 4-6 pellets a day for the first four days of his stay here. I feel so bad but then I did my research and I’m so glad I found your video.
Plants and my turtle do not mix, since if I put one little plant, munched away it goes! Lol. But I do have a fish tank so I’ll be sure to try some new plants for in there! Thanks for all your help!
There is nothing wrong with putting a little piece of polycarbonate separator with silicone so the plants be in the same tank producing oxygen but the little baby can't wreak havoc 🙃🖤🐢
Yeah my tank was blanketed with duckweed. It was gone in a month. Funny because I hear people say duckweed is "impossible to get rid of" once you put it in your tank. Yeah not in my case, it is 100% gone. I have turtles that are primarily carnivorous too (Pink belly side neck and a Razorback Musk). I don't think they wanted to eat it necessarily, but they are just so used to "food floats on the surface" they ate it all.
Thank you Turtle Girl!! Waited a long time for a video like this!! My daughter and I have watched almost all your videos. Thanks for your content! We have a dbt and we’re given two yellow bellied sliders (rescued really) and now they are part of the fam! We want to put those two together…any advice? And also what about guppy grass?
At around 6.30 you advised against using Lucky Bamboo because of potential toxicity. My question is, have you ever actually encountered documented cases of turtles succumbing to Lucky Bamboo poisoning? I've also seen many toxicity precautions in forums being discussed but have not found substantial reports of actual proven turtle demise from eating lucky bamboo. So are the risks perhaps overblown?
Glad you did this one. I've been experimenting with trying to create a planted tank. I've done anubias & Amazon sword so far. They just attack them but don't eat them. I've got a 90 gallon & I really want to put a big plant to grow up & out of the tank. Any suggestions?
My red eared slider loves swimming over java fern. Unfortunately she destroys the plant doing this. So just have to keep replacing the plants because she loves swimming through the leaves. Last week she pulled the whole plant out of the planter and took it into its cave 😂
For some reason my turtle will not eat any veggies, but destroys plants in the tank 🤨 I have tried a few but no luck keeping them. I want to try again but it makes such a mess and they aren’t cheap to last only a few minutes. I do worry about the filter too, so may check out the prefilter info. The guys at the pet store always tell me never get duckweed. These videos are very helpful!
Hi I have a question I have a painted turtle too but I don’t have a uvb light but I do have my turtles tank by the window where sun shines in will the sunlight be enough uvb?
My baby Razorback musk turtle doesn't bother the Water Sprite for the first month. But one day i noticed that most of the plant is cut in half, so i think the turtle just torn it apart with it's claw. Low and behold, the next day i saw it eating the plants 😅.
My turtle (jean’uc) is super calm and chill and laid back so i was like maybe this could work maybe when i get some money to spend i can buy a bunch of real plants to replace his fake ones. But then I remembered how VICIOUS he gets around food or edible things and i decided against it for me. But hes just a baby so idk
Duckweed was great for the florida peninsula river cooter because of the slow water movement but as far as for sliders the baby yes but our adult has too much waste into the tank to do less filtering/slower water movement. The duckweed just died and went to the bottom for the shrimp and the filter lol.
Just switched up my Eastern Painted to black sand and live plants after getting tired of the constant high algae build up in her tank. It always ruined the white sand and made it difficult to clean the fake plants. Hopefully my plan works.
Well I am very frustrated. Bought a java fern for my musk turtle. Waited 2 weeks for it to arrive and within 2 hours my musk turtle ate it down to roots. So much for literally every website out there telling me that turtles won't eat it. Your video was the only thing that gave me any indication this could happen so thank you. Might try hornwort next. Seems like the java fern root I threw in a cup of water is going to take months to regrow.
Ya know I've started Watchung ur vids recently was curious as to your opinion on turtle tubs. I have one for my musk turtle it's 40 gallons of water an 10 gallons of substrate an he's an Eastern musk turtle so they walk on the bottom more then swim been thinking about using one for my snapping turtle as well. Thoughts ?
Hi :) I really want to explore having a water lettus plant in my YBS turtle tank because its a hardy plant and she gets bored with veggies fairly quick. I can't get one where I live though. Is there something ybs turtle safe that's similar that I haven't ran across yet? It needs to be larger, thick leafed and fast growing like the water lettus. (Her carapace is about 6.5" and she is an extremely picky eater.) Thanks to anyone how has input 😀
I have a pond I have indoors. Only problem is my old turtle light isn’t that big and I have 4 different basking spots because I have 4 turtles. I’m trying to get their basking spots heated up but it would be expensive to go out and get 3 more lights plus it would cause my electricity bill to skyrocket. I do have this bright Grow light that produces heat and my only issue with it is if you stare at it too long it can make you blind. This is the same for turtle lamps but could I use the grow light for my pond? It would also help my plants grow around the pond
I have a box turtle 🐢 he disappeared in garden today he digs down in dirt it’s hot in Az I thought I would give him some fresh air and freedom and he took off while I was watering and cleaning up what should I feed my box turtle she doesn’t eat much I bought pellets and fresh veggies even fruit she doesn’t eat much
Question for anyone that might know… I have a 5(ish) year old red eared slider who is very lazy. He spends all his time floating on the surface of the water and never wants to bask. I’ve taken him to the vet and they said he’s perfectly healthy. Has anyone else had a turtle like this? I’ve never had a turtle before him and all the videos I’ve seen of other people’s sliders seem to be a lot more energetic. Is something wrong with him?
I have two African side necked turtles - the adult female destroys anubias and Java ferns in minutes, the juvenile male doesn’t touch them. I’m trying water sprite & dwarf sagittaria with the adult. So far they’ve lasted longer than others, but the water sprite is down to one sprig. 😂🤦🏼♀️
I’m getting a musk turtle in a few days, any tips? Edit: I got the turtle, but it’s not a musk, it’s a red eared slider. I sometimes see bubbles around his mouth when he comes up for air, and I’m really scared. Some people said it’s normal but some other people said it could be because of an infection.
depends what turtle you have but most need around 75-80°F water so i would definitely recommend a heater to maintain the heat the UVB lamp should be above your basking area and it will not heat the water
this is unrelated to this video, but does anyone have any good, reliable water heater recommendations? i’m kind of a helicopter parent for my turtle, so preferably a plastic one (since i don’t have any experience with glass heaters) or just one that is proven to be 100% safe!! i used the same brand for 5-ish years and it suddenly got my turtle sick so now i’m really on edge if it makes a difference he’s a 7 year old painted turtle and is pretty large and active, so any suggestions would help! i also have minnows in my tank
Hi my slider turtle Will not eat or bask for about 1 month now (maybe 3 weeks) All it does about 15hrs a day is stare at itself in (I'm assuming) its own reflection in the glass doing mating dance and swimming frantically back and forth (wothout pause, for hours) the length of rhe tank (40gal). When I take him out to feed in a separate container, it eats maybe 1/4 of the food (a thimble size of its head), then goes back on extteme high alert to get back in the big tank I dont knkw what to do... he's become so neurotic, its starting to make me anxious just watching him.. Any suggestions of what I can do?
a question to all of youtube. my turtles still will not eat pellets. but i manage to get to eat vegetables like lettuce and carrots, and i also add algae chips that they enjoy. am i missing something that their diet might still need? i have a red eared slider and what might be an eastern river cooter (was literally left on my doorstep anonymously) . they seem healthy but facts are that symptoms show up a little late. i worry they arent getting the best i can provide! thank you to any response
i tried a money tree thinking that my RES wouldn't eat it because only the bark would be accessible. instead he just kept knocking it over! so... yeah.
Have a full integrated planted tank I sent pictures to your Instagram the other day, I hope you saw them when I first started out a few years ago I learned a lot from your videos and multiple hours of research and resources.

Just ordered my first floating plants today. Duckweed for my common snapping turtle.
cool! duckweed is great!

did it work ? in a similar situation myself 😢
@bellapoi Well...it fixed the algae problem. I guess algae is not attracted to black sand. But my turtle destroyed the plants unfortunately.
Allergies suck! Most of my plants are still thriving! I’ve gotten incredibly lucky with my little guy.
