  • Does God really care about our hair? Apostolic Pentecostals historically have taught that women should not cut their hair, and that men should keep their hair cut short. This teaching is based on 1 Corinthians 11:2-16, where the apostle Paul provides instruction on proper conduct in the church.
Many modern Christians ignore Paul's teaching on hair, considering it a cultural relic of a bygone era. In this episode, Dr. David K. Bernard reviews what the Bible says about hair and its role in gender distinction and explains why believers should take Paul's words seriously if we want to faithfully follow the practice of the New Testament church and reflect God's plan for humanity.
For more information on the topic of Christians and hair, see Dr. Bernard's books "In Search of Holiness," "Practical Holiness: A Second Look," and "The Apostolic Church in the Twenty First Century." All three titles are available at PentecostalPublishing.com.
You can listen to the audio version of this episode on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, and other podcast platforms.

I am a teenage girl who is being raised in the UPC Church, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Cutting hair is one topic that I have always struggled with, I understand that women need to have long hair as a distinction and to show their femininity. I have also been taught that it is powerful if you don't cut it at all because of this verse- 1 Corinthians 11:6 "For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered." I know that our hair is our covering, not a piece of cloth. The definition of shorn is "trimmed, clipped, or shaved." So Paul was saying that if we even trim our hair, we may as well just shave it all off and not have a covering. He also said in verse 10, "For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels." With all of that being said, if I trim my split ends off will my hair really not be powerful anymore? My hair is curly and dry and so damaged at the ends, I just don't know what to do. If it means having damaged hair but following God even though I don't understand, I will do that. I just want an answer

With much respect for an awesome teacher of God's Word. You referenced Rev. 7:8 about the locus having the hair of a woman, it is obvious to me the church understood the difference between men's hair and women's, however in verse 7 it says they had the face of a man. I believe Nature provides a distinction between men and women in the fact that men grow facial hair naturally. They have to shave it off to make it smooth like a woman's face. I think Scripture speaks more about men having beards in a positive light, than is does about woman's hair. Blessing Brother. Mitch Spring

So unrelated but related to this topic. In the book of Mathew an issue was brought up to Jesus about some people were not washing their hands before they ate. And Jesus said what ever is brought into the stomach is eliminated, but what comes out of the mouth from the heart is what defiles a man. So don’t be caught up with appearances beards no beards long hair or short. Love one another like God loves us, reconcile forgive be fruitful. Just like God told us.

True, we need to love others as Christ loves us. We are commanded to Love God. Jesus said we have to obey His commandments to do that. If we encourage people to ignore or negate His Word and commands, that defiles us because we speak those words. To love is to respect. Our appearance matters. If it didn't, the Lord wouldn't have made the effort to distinguish male and female during creation.

Bro. Bernard is saying that women should grow their hair to its natural length, but an argument I’ve heard quite often is to keep the hair healthy, split ends should be cut and maintained. Would this not fall under taking care of our bodies as the temple, if women cut their hair ends for the overall health of the hair? From the distinction perspective, if cutting split ends is all that’s done to the hair, doesn’t that still provide ample distinction between a male and female? I would like to have an answer to this for when it is brought up with new converts, and even long time believers that are still trying to grasp Holiness.

If a woman trims her hair, its still considered long hair...Some women cut their hair because the weight gives them headaches. Even if subscribing to the UPCI biblical interpretation, how long is long enough? Down to her waist or knees, both is considered long... it's really not complicated when pride is not involved.

    • @jamessteenwyk4703
      @jamessteenwyk4703 Рік тому +2

@@revrufuswHello, personally I believe that "long" isn't fully dictated by length. But also by personal possiblity. Example: If you have two women, the first with hair to her waist, and the second with hair to her shoulders. It's easy for us as humans to say that the woman who's hair goes to her waist is longer. However, what if the woman with hair going to her waist cuts it? And she has the possibility to grow her hair to her knees. And the second woman with hair to her shoulders has never cut it? Her hair has reached %100 percent of it's possiblity where the other woman has longer hair but she is only at 60% of it's possible length. Now who's hair is longer? The woman who has stopped at 60% or the woman who has allowed it to grow to 100%.

Jobs have standards of dress and hair which most dont mind for work but when its a standard a Pastor wishes then we jump all over it as heratical. Now if the Pastor is considering it sin he's wrong..no scripture against it, but there is plenty against rebellion to the man of God in your life.

Men with hair to their shoulders were considered to have short hair too. It’s in the modern era in these confusion times that people don’t understand the difference. It’s very clear. Let a woman and a man grow their hair and you’ll see that woman’s hair naturally grow down to the lower back. Where as for men it takes years to even get that close. Men in the ancient times had hair to their shoulder and it was not looked at as confusing or feminine. I believe all men should keep their beards if possible. It’s one of the best male distinguishing characteristics we have. But not all of us are happy with our facial hair. However if God have it to us we should keep it. That’s how I see it.

@@blues4jesus how is it ok to prohibit a man of God from edifying the church because of a “tradition” that is not lawful. I wonder if a man of God shows up in modest garments if he would be allowed to preach in these organizations. People need to stop having the mindset of an organization and have the mindset of the kingdom of God. I like the UPC and other oneness groups because they teach a lot of biblical truths. But all these unnecessary traditions are a wall that prohibit those outside from joining into the body of Christ. If we can let go of traditions of men, and only hold on to the biblical truths the gospel would advance way more effectively. Today the leaders of the church(not all) are the same as the Pharisees the Lord Jesus Christ spoke against. They upheld their traditions more than the law of God. The same is happening today in these churches. I don’t even congregate(which I want to) because many do not allow men to keep their beards. Why should I be forced to shave and look like the world when God was pleased with men having beards in the old testaments. It was the Greeks that didn’t like facial hair as much.

If long hair in men was a sin then God would not command Samson to have long hair. Because God will never tell anyone to sin. I think it’s because this world has taught women that they need to “ look good” all the time. It’s very sad. And the world pulls 24/7 on women with new fads, new looks, new products to beautify women. It’s just wrong. When women know who they are in Christ and when husbands love their wives as Christ loved the Church it is easier to not care what this world thinks.

@@Clicked_whopperI don’t see a Bible verse that says beautification is wrong. If we could make the face sexual through makeup, then the Bible would say for us to cover the face, same with hair. Apostolic Pentecostals have no problem with curling the hair and doing elaborate hairstyles. If a man thinks this is “sexy”, that’s opinion based, as the Bible does not say to cover the hair, just as it doesn’t say to cover the face. The Bible tells us to cover our nakedness, shoulders to knees. And Jezebel put on scarlet as well, but it’s not a sin to wear colors.

The bible never once states that a woman cannot wear jewellery it states to let our focus be on our heart rather than braided hair or jewellery so what the author is saying is for us to have our heart and charecter be the priority. There are no commands at all for women not to wear make up, trousers or jewellery. If a woman wanted to stop wearing these things thats fine, but that is a personal conviction it is not a command set in scripture for all christian women, neither is it even remotely stated in scripture that women can't enjoy these things, Isaccs wife Rebecca was given jewels to wear as a gift from Issac and his household (men of God). I say all this respectfully, opinions are not bible ❤

If we have long hair that clearly identifies us a female & we trim the dead ends, keeping our hair mostly it's natural length, is that sin?
I am truly curious to know on the trimming because my hair became so damaged from health related issues that I did have to have the ends trimmed in order to be able to brush it even. I am trying to see from the scripture absolutely no cutting or is it only keeping it long?

If the hair is so long it gives a headache or so damaged it’s getting shorter, I don’t think women are in bondage to such things. The hair would definitely not feel like her glory in such circumstances.

Worth noting: Prostitutes from the temple of Diana had long, flowing hair to seduce men. The Jews reacted and prohibited their women from exposing their hair. That's why even modern-day Jewish women often wear wigs. Paul contradicted their religious obsession and stated women's (own) hair is a crown and covering. This is about freedom, not creating another religious obsession. I mean, God created African females who don't have long, flowing hair. Are they exempt from becoming Christians? Surely sis it is the blood of Christ that grants us entry into Heaven. Please trim your hair. If it was that important, Jesus Himself would have said something about it. Instead, He argued with the religious leaders a lot.

That scripture's purpose is not to cause bondage but to see the spiritual reason behind the distinction in hair between male & female in creation. A woman's hair is symbolic of the spiritual covering her husband, Pastor, Jesus, etc. has over her life.
The encouragement in that scripture is to not remove the covering whether it be hair or the Lord or the man. This is why Paul speaks of the shame it is to a woman to have her hair shorn (different from trimmed, or reasonably shortened) bald or in a cut pertaining to a man.

If a persons hair length from behind would make a person question their gender or decieved them by it then it is wrong. Also men were given facial hair by God as a distinction between men and women and yet somehow men growing facial hair will keep a member off the platform or ministry. I can see from the scriptures where long hair on a woman is uncut, but when is a man's hair considered long ?. For example if I were wore my hair a modest shoulder length ,and cut it about 3 times a year , would that be considered long or short compared alongside the biblical interpretation of (woman's ) long hair? I know interpretations are varied.among different cultures. It seems that the extremely short hair ( military - like) is a white man western world interpretation. I'm of a 1st Nation ( American Indian) heritage, and I was wondering about the biblical definition of shortness for the man . Not just the white angloaxion interpretation. The principle I adhere to is : My appearance should never be such as to make me look anything but what I am female. As to the term nature in the scriptures, if left to nature in the most used sense of the word (biological) , hair will become long on a male or female, so the scripture cannot refer to nature in the biological sense. What other meanings for the word are there? A characteristic by which something is recognized, natural. Long hair on women was considered the culturally natural thing. Long hair was recognized in that Roman culture as natural for woman, but men of that day and region often had longer hair than what we would like for a man in the church. I think the brother rightly points out that the key is making a distinction between male and female. It is also true that long hair has become an identifier of a number of groups, not just apostolics. My objection is only that it is argued that cutting hair or letting it grow is a sin. The nature of the culture (or what is considered natural or normal in that culture ) determines what is male or female). That is why kilts (essentially a skirt) in Celtic countries is perfectly appropriate for a man, but not so in the US. But it is also true that just because something is considered natural or normal in a culture doesn’t necessarily mean we should do it. Each individual male or female must prayerfully work these things out in their own life. I want to be seen as a godly female.

Some of it is eg: keeping it at its natural hair length. The bible does want male and female to have distictions he created us that way. However he didnt say anything about not cutting hair he says long hair, the words long hair and natural length has different definitions they are not the same. A christian has christian liberty to cut her hair thats a personal boundary and choice her choice no one elses. Long hair can be at many lengths eg: shoulder length, on the shoulder blades, just above the waist, waist length or longer. By all means cut your hair if you want, its your choice, and God doesn't say you can't. What he wants is for there to be a distinction between male and female and for you to be feminine by having long hair.

I had an elder explain to me the custom back then: In the idol temples, a woman would cut her hair off and serve as a prostitute, as an allegiance to that god.
When this new Christian doctrine came, they wanted to know if they should offer Christ the same allegiance by cutting off their hair. The writing “we have no such custom…” was explaining to those that had contention on what matter of offering God wanted.
    It helped me.
All through time, up until the early 1900’s, women all understood the nature of their long hair. When they began the rebellion (flappers) of bobbing it off, society reacted to it like we’re reacting to transgenderism today!
We are seeing exactly today, what the beginning of women cutting their hair short back then initiated.

I agree with most of this about the long hair on women. Like 95%. I do not think a woman trimming one's hair, as long as it is kept noticeably long, is wrong in any way. I've heard people do all kinds of biblical gymnastics with the Greek claiming it must remain untrimmed, even saying that if you trim any of it that counts as short hair and something that should be repented of to the point it's a sin. To me that's ridiculous. Under the same understanding, if a man only trimmed his hair once a year, it could eventually grow down to his back side and still be counted short since he trimmed it. I think the main point he was making is right, that there must be a noticeable difference in length of male and female hair, but it ends there in my understanding. No offence to any who think differently. If you disagree with my understanding and believe God lead you never to trim your hair, you follow what you think God calls you to do. Just cast aside my thoughts. I love you reguardless.

If its trimmed, its cut. Uncut hair allows women who cannot grow "Long" hair to still fall under this holiness teaching. My hair only grows to about my mid back. But other's grow to the back of their knees. Is my hair short? No. We both have uncut hair. Not about length. Its a principle of obedience.

This isn’t necessarily the scriptural aspect of it, but I think the world (including ads for beard products, beard competitions, etc.) makes it clear that a beard has to do with nothing more than masculine pride. And, while women are being attacked from the world on the front of modesty of apparel, men are certainly attacked on the front of pride. Furthermore, even by the world’s standard, there have been surveys that have come out that indicate that people are much more likely to trust someone who is clean-shaven, as opposed to someone with any facial hair. So, one would infer, if we are to be witnesses for Jesus and His gospel, we’d want to be seen as trustworthy and free of personal pride, whether or not we feel that perception is fair.
Obviously, in I Cor. 11, a man shouldn’t have his head covered. I would think, for a man, that would include covering up any additional part of your head (e.g. ears, neck, forehead…and face). It’s all in the attitude. It’s either “can I get away with a beard” or “how close can I get to what the Word of God is saying.”

      Pasted in for you:
Jesus was a Nazarene, but He was not a Nazirite. The two terms are often confused for one another. The term Nazarene refers to someone who lived in the town of Nazareth, while a Nazirite (or Nazarite) was someone (such as Samson or John the Baptist) who took a special vow before God and was subsequently consecrated to God for service. Numbers 6 details the requirements for being a Nazirite, which included abstaining from wine (verses 3-4), keeping one’s hair unshaved (verse 5), and staying away from dead bodies (verses 6-7). After the time of the vow was fulfilled, the Nazirite had to present sacrifices and cut his hair, offering this as a sacrifice as well. From this information, it is clear that Jesus was not a Nazirite.
Jesus could not have been a Nazirite since He did drink wine, as recorded in the gospels.

Hi Mr Bernard! I just wanted to say that first of all I really appreciate and honor the teachings you have given us of the truth of Gods word! I’m in a UPCI church in Wyoming. You even know my pastor. I have many of your books and watch your videos. When it comes to hair I do agree that God is wanting it to be a shorter length than women’s hair but also we always leave the verse out of where Moses is saying that we are to not round our hair nor are we supposed to mar/cut the beard. I do always get confused as of why we choose to talk about what Paul says to cut the hair but then we don’t recognize how Moses is saying as men we are to have beards? I’ve had a slight conviction in the Holy Spirit about my hair about 9 months ago. It was to long. So I cut it. It’s now above my shoulders. But now I also felt the need to keep and of course groom my beard due to the teachings of the beard. Do you have any thoughts on this scripture Leviticus 19:27? Thank you very much brother! God bless you!❤️🙏🏼🙌🏼

    • @z-man7312

There are a few things to unpack, here.
It was a different culture, living under the law (which Paul calls the “schoolmaster to bring us into Christ). Jesus fulfilled the law, so there is no contradiction between old and new testaments. However, it was a different time and culture. There are also laws given about servants, but that doesn’t mean we need to go and own other people. It was simply a practice that was already going on, after 400 years as slaves in Egypt. Yet, God provided a way, in the law, for servants to be set free.
That said, we should understand the context of why that part is there in Leviticus. If you check out the Matthew Henry commentary on this portion (you can get that for free on Blue Letter Bible), it says this:
“There was a superstition even in trimming themselves used by the heathen, which must not be imitated by the people of God: You shall not round the corners of your heads. Those that worshipped the hosts of heaven, in honour of them, cut their hair so as that their heads might resemble the celestial globe; but, as the custom was foolish itself, so, being done with respect to their false gods, it was idolatrous.”
In essence, don’t grow your hair/beard out to mimic and identify with those of the world, who don’t worship the one true God. The same spirit of the law, which Jesus came to fulfill, would be to make sure we’re not getting specific haircuts/facial hair, patterning ourselves off of the styles of celebrities, etc. obviously, beards have become a big topic lately BECAUSE they’re making a comeback in the world around us. As you know through Holy Ghost conviction, Jesus does confirm things to us, personally, that align with His Word.
Hope this helps. Bottom line is this, if we’re supposed to be praying with our heads “uncovered,” I want to take the approach of removing as much hair “covering” from my head and face as possible to please Him and for my prayers to have connection with God.
God bless you, brother (I’m a UPCI youth pastor).

Dr. Bernard's interpretation of v.16 sounds a little conveniently sketchy (8:18). Rather, this sounds more like Paul is stopping short of creating a church hair doctrine (custom), having emphasized God's nature as the instructor. Also, Dr. Bernard mentions a universality of agreement among churches and cultures on this subject; however, there is no mention of this subject in any other epistle.
This was not the only specific issue that the wild and exotic carnal church at Corinth that Paul addressed.

Paul, in this letter, mentions 5 times that these subjects are taught to All the Churches. This was not directed to only the Corinthians and NOT a Cultural thing and has nothing to do with the Temple Prostitutes. I wish people would quit bringing this up like it's a "Game Changer"

Kindly make some reference to the image Jesus Christ is depicted as. What do you know his image ss?A white man with long hair with a full beard. So Jesus is not portrayed as a Groomed/shaven man?

What about African women, who cannot grow hair long? There are many women whose hair breaks off and remains short, how do you judge them? That may be why Paul used covering mostly. I agree with your teaching however, there are those precious among us that long hair is not possible therefore, we should make them included within the scripture as Paul wisely made attempt to do.

It's not about having long hair it's about having uncut hair.

Long simply mean uncut. Many ethnicities don't grow out long hair due to their genetics. Scripture refers to long being uncut when you study it in more depth. Pastor Jason Varnum recently covered this on their YT channel, Soul's Harbor FPC. Look for the video titled "Grace University (Part 3 - Hair)"

A woman who does not cut her hair has no control over how long it grows. She only has control over whether she cuts it. That is what God sees. That is what God honors. The choice that a woman makes in her walk with Him. So if it does not grow long and people judge her that will be on them. God will still honor her obedience.

It's just uncut hair "1 Cor 11:6 For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered." I know some women naturally don't grow hair as long as others, but it's the fact that God wants us to not "cut" thier hair.. even if it's not as long as the others.. just uncut

That's my view on it, I know no scripture is open to private interpretation, but I think that's what Paul meant here

Ppl want to argue about hair, but Paul referred to nature! I believe a woman should have long hair and a man short hair. Need not to argue because nature itself condemns them.

Its amazing that no one addresses the reason why, only that you better. Paul wrote 15 verses concerning this matter and the Corinthians understood. But today, books have been written and still missing the point
