      If lipsticks turn colour on you, try liquid lipsticks. (The kind that are “24 hour lipsticks”) They are formulated to sit on top of your skin rather than interact with your skin, so they tend to “turn” less.

    My pet peeves:
    1) Makeup salespeople being trained that olive is a darkness level. IT’S AN UNDERTONE.
    2) Makeup companies making absolutely no complexion products for very pale or very dark olives. WE EXIST! You can be parchment-white or deep dark blickety-black and still be olive!
    3) Makeup formulated and marketed for mature skin thinking that absolutely everyone over 40 has parched, dry skin. I want makeup that doesn’t settle into my lines, not tinted Crisco. I’m taking to you, Jones Road!

    blushes that are so pigmented that you have to apply the gentlest whisper of it to your skin and blend like your life depends on it to not make it look like clown paint. I don't want to do all that work to get a sheer wash of color when it is so easy to just make a blush sheer in the first place.

    • @sofie.h
      @sofie.h 6 місяців тому +11

      ugh same - I got a glossier cloud paint in a lovely poppy shade (assuming it would be sheer, bc of how people talk about them as being super user friendly) and have barely used it because I have to put in so much effort to get it to distribute and blend without also adding way too much pigment

    • @MillieMaa
      @MillieMaa 6 місяців тому +37

      to be fair, folks with deeper skin tones are always going on about how there is barely anything out there that's pigmented enough! If I may, some clarification on pH adjusting products:
    - they all use the same couple of dyes, which are hot pink/ red, they cannot be other colors
    - unless there is a significant amount of other pigment in the product with which that red/ pink can mix, they will all look the same on the skin; if there is a visible brown pigment in the product, until that product wears off, leaving only the stain, it will look more brown than just the pH dye
    - they don’t claim that they will cause your skin to change color, they claim that the product itself will change color to match your particular skin color/ undertone/ depth
    - all skin is approximately the same pH, regardless of color/ tone/ depth, if the pH of your skin isn’t within the narrow range of healthy human skin, you will experience dryness, acne, etc., which is why most people’s skin is relatively the same pH and the “color-adjusting” claim is absolutely BS, the only reason that the color would look different is because the base of the product and the dye are sheer, so the natural color of your lips shows through, making the color appear slightly different

    • @GeorgeSand00
      @GeorgeSand00 6 місяців тому +21

      It's literally the one pigment... D&C Red # 27 Aluminum Lake. It only becomes visible at a pH of 4+ .... So much for the "unique shade" that these products are supposed to provide 🫥

      Right If these were changing dramatic colors based on someone's skin pH someone would have to have deeply unhealthy skin for their pH to show that much of a difference. And it certainly would have anything to do with their coloring or what would be flattering on them

    I love a good grievance. Mine: when something is marketed as neutral/cool-toned but is definitely warm; nobody knows what mauve actually is; complexion products that do not set down and cake when powdered; lip products that suck the moisture straight off my mouth; and anything marketed to fair-skinned peeps that is nowhere near fair or oxidizes horribly. I second and third the commenters that purchase mostly from K beauty brands now for the cooler and fairer toned products.

    I'm so there with you on the "secretly orange" hate train. I also hate greens that are secretly blue or yellow, purples that are secretly blue, blacks that are secretly blue or purple... I know those colors can be hard to formulate! That's part of why they're so special and exciting, which is why it's such a letdown to buy an emerald green eyeliner and walk away looking like I smoked my eye out with a blue Bic rollerball. AND! Colored mascara that doesn't show up. Just rude.

      Some colors will also "shift" on our skin. Natasha Denona "mauvey" neutrals go full on brown on my skin because my skin is cooler (e.g. the mini starlette, all those "pinks" from I Need a Nude). If you're finding that cool greens pull super blue on your complexion, you may have a lot of warmth to your skin.

    100% agree with the pH adjusting crap - I worked in research labs for years and a lot of cell culture media has a similar pH adjusting dye to be able to identify when the media is used up or contaminated (I don’t think it’s exactly the same dye tho) and anyway that’s ALL I think of whenever I see something pH adjusting!! And yes, it all changes to the same color, it only ever looks different due to either an individual’s skin tone and/or additional pigment mixed in. Oh, and the concentration of the dye. UGH!!

    I honestly think serum skin tins exist because they don't want you to know that you can get basically the same effect by not wearing foundation and just sheering out concealer in the areas you want it, bc they'd sell way less product if people just did that lol. For me if I'm going to take the time and energy to apply a product all over my face and have to feel it on my skin all day, I want it to actually look like something is there and not just be a see through tint that makes me way too shiny. love having a place to get in the weeds with you about makeup!

    • @user-xm1od9nb1m
      @user-xm1od9nb1m 6 місяців тому +15

      I kinda disagree, as someone who uses both only concealer and concealer + skin tint/light-meduim coverage foundation depending on the vibe I honestly think skin tints brings something to the table and smoothes out the skintone. I have a lot of slighly red dots from acne scarring and pinpoint concealing every one of them takes ages. However I don’t mind if they show through a little bit through a skin tint, and the stronger ones i can point conceal. I also live in a climate where it can get really cold aka my skin gets red, then there can be a harsh contrast between cancealed and non concealed skin. I prefer liquid products that self set though, not super dewy 😖 Just my 2 cents

    • @a.chieri
      @a.chieri 6 місяців тому +3

      I think that most people need no foundation or tint or anything at all. Where I live no one really uses this kind of makeup. But that doesn’t mean there is no place for it. As someone who really needs to have high coverage for my acne can say that not wearing anything as base but still cover some areas with concealer looks totally wrong. If you have to cover some areas you need at least a tint as base before you go in with too much concealer…

  • @fictionalgloss4875
    @fictionalgloss4875 6 місяців тому +22

    I think that plastic feeling you're encountering with those glosses is due to the ingredient "Hydrogenated Polyisobutene." It's a lab-made, completely synthetic oil that I believe was mostly used in K Beauty before and now is prominent in Western formulas. It's actually hypoallergenic and can be labeled as a plastic. I was iffy on this ingredient myself at first but after researching and learning how unethical most natural oils come to end up on our shelves, I'm now leaning towards more synthetic, lab-made ingredients such as this one. However, this is definitely a small cog in the machine and I can see how many people might not enjoy the feel of synthetic oil/plastic on their lips or even body in general. Def worth keeping an eye out on the ingredients list though!
    EDIT: Also, it grates on me how there are no true reds. They either lean into an orange red or a pink red. "Vintage reds" & "blue-toned reds" are pink and "fiery reds" are orange, where's the in between? Even when a lip colour is a true red, it's much too bright for my skin tone. It's a bright red and that brightness overshadows the fact that it's a true red imo. IDK, am I the only one with this problem? I've eyed the merit lip stick and decided it would be too bright for me if it even is a true red. (This is coming from someone who spent their teenage years into adulthood wearing red lips too. it's my signature; my safe place!)

    I'm one of the weirdos that like most of the things you complained about in this video. I love products that don't dry down because my skin is super dry and as soon as my skincare soaks in almost every product looks dry and crusty on my skin, so I am constantly searching for complexion products influencers complain about being too greasy. I wore the pH adjusting frog prince lip color for my wedding because I really didn't wear makeup then and I liked that it gave me a long lasting sheer color, but wasn't dry and crusty like other lip stains at that time. Finally I love the non-sticky glosses like the Maybelline lifter gloss. I also prefer something more moisturizing, but I like having something cheap, neutral colored, and super glossy that I can leave in my car or purse to throw on without a mirror.

Like for me I'm an olive toned person with a tad bit more yellow than blue so colors that are supposed to be neutral (nudes or pinks) will pull orange bc of my yellow saturation. Lots of promo shots look like they have a very pale neutral pink and when it comes it is wayyyyy darker than it looked. I still haven't found my perfect shade, the gucci lipsticks come close but they're all slightly to grey toned!

    about the serumy face tints... i love them soo much, i recently swatched the tower 28 one in store and i did not like it i know it is technically light coverage but it felt heavy and almost medium coverage to me. my favorite type of skin tint is a watery more blurring one like the iconic london or rose inc or something like the loreal one or even tower 28 which has replaced a more traditional foundation for me. i use the watery skin tint like bob ross uses titanium white, as a base to blend everything else on top of
    edit: and i am also in the weeds because i will use many complexion products on top, i like to layer creams and powders and i find it all to be far too heavy if i start with a medium coverage foundation, i also hate trying to get makeup off my neck, the sensation is awful and my skin there can be sensitive, anyway bottom line i've made them work for me and they make sense for how i do makeup! but i still wouldn't buy the glossier one its too boring for me as well

    I do think re: the barely there skin tints, I like that they don’t show then they wear off because of their lack of a clear presence. I used to do heavier foundations and the reality is no makeup lasts immaculately all day, and the harder I would try to make it last the worse it looked when it inevitably cracked or got patchy throughout the day. I really like the glossier skin tint (maybe 2 layers of it) + very very light minor spot concealing. Most higher coverage products even with a skin like finish end up looking too makeup-y when they start to wear off and reveal real skin/non-makeup spots

    Lack of pink undertones in foundations outside of the fair range is probably a pet peeve especially when marketed as having cool or even pink undertones, basically the "everything is orange" problem. I really only know of 1-2 brands that are pink enough to match my skin tone (light/medium with a pink undertone) in a formula I'm interested in (light-medium coverage skin like products). I'm more ok with that reality when brands aren't mislabeled as having an undertone they clearly do not because the whole line skews yellow/orange. I feel this marketing and the shade ranges are "purposeful" because of the hype that seems to be involved with "correcting" people's foundations to look yellow/neutral regardless of what their undertone is. I just want to know what the shade actually is so I can decide what to put on my face.
    Also I've found a good foundation that fits my needs (Sisley Nude 3C) and can make a few others that lean cool/desaturated/pink work by mixing them with Chanel's light pink Les Beiges blush. I would just like to find a less expensive option without a scent if possible and constantly need to sort through shades or products I shouldn't have to if they were labeled properly. I'd almost like a marketing gimmick where in addition to seeing a circle of the actual foundation color there were two sliders to show depth and undertone objectively (if marketed accurately).

    To your question of what irks me in makeup that is actually the point, it would have to be what I would call gimmicky packaging. That is, packaging that to me is excessive or over the top, whose point is not to simply contain and protect the product but to provide some kind of visual or interactive experience that isn’t necessary. Often it adds to the amount of plastic or metal used, and I just can’t justify it. Examples would be many lids on lne compact that hold puffs or applicators, timy mirrors in compacts that are actually too small to even be useful, bows and elavorate fasteners that are fiddly and make the product feel precious and like it’s trying too hard, or like the brand is trying to make something eye-catchingly unique. I don’t care for Glossier’s skin tint but Saie’s Slip Tint is so easy to put on and has SPF -makes my skin look glowy and protected. I also have my concealer days. To each their own 🤷🏼‍♀️ ❤

    I searched for AGES for a true purple lip gloss/oil to replace my ancient Sephora Fig Jam lip gloss, happened to spot the expensive Clarins one, and snatched it not realizing it just turns pink -_-

    Yes, that lip gloss formula!!! Its the worst! The way I've described it is it feels like its loaded with silicone, like a silicone primer. I also hate silicone primers. But that feeling like something is sitting on your lips or skin and is like creating a mask or film and not absorbing is so yucky.

    Hey Hannah! 😊
    Can you do a video all about your (current) favourite cheek products? I am looking for (affordable,) cool toned, (greyish or otherwise not saturated) shades with texture minimasing but natural finish. 😂 😅
    I am also very interested in your base makeup recommendations since I'm also pale. ❄️🌸

    I had the same problem with particularly Lisa Eldridge lip products. I wanted a deeper shade of what she was wearing like a darker beige for my medium skintone and what was recommended to me turned out to be orange. It's a great way to make your teeth look yellower!

    You summed it up perfectly Hannah, beauty industry is selling a fantasy they cant deliver and hope we are gullible enough to fall for the outlandish claims. Whenever I hear a beauty YTer read a brand's product "claims" i just LOL 😂. I guess its my age , and being a skeptic.
    PH adjusting is a gimmick. Tinted serums work on already flawless skin . Like u Hannah, Im searching for that perfect formula that marries the pigment of foundation and the thin skin-like consistency of a serum.

    Thanks for the great discussion! I am one of those people that quite likes the lifter gloss, though I slather on aquaphor at home and only ware the gloss out, so maybe I haven't ever used it long enough to notice that its moisturisation propoerties.
    Regarding your lip balm search/series, a Japanese one that I think might be a candidate would be the Excel lip steady (which I think is on yesstyle). Looking forward to your next video!

    Products marketed as multi-use (i.e. eyes, lips, and cheeks). I always fall for them and am always disappointed in at least one form of the application (too dry for lips, too balmy for eyes etc).

    I'm particularly irritated by the products that look "neutral" or even cool leaning online or even in store lighting, then, as soon as I put it on in the real world - it's orange.

    An interesting note on the topic of lip glosses that you were talking about is the Tower 28 jelly lip glosses. It’s exactly as you describe with the whole slipping against itself aspect but its the only gloss I’ve tried with that feel and “nourishing nonsticky marketing” that truly hydrates my lips as it fades. It’s tryly the one perfect execution of that prompt with the one downside of masive overlathering can result in things moving out of place.
    Just the hought to share the makeup knowledge

    Yeeeess about the liquid plastic lip jelly teflon glosses! The make beauty lilac lip serum is that for me. I actually thought I liked it at first and it took me a while to come to terms with the fact that it was drying my lips out lol. And once I figured that out I can immediately clock that characteristic in any lip product I try.

    Never tried the Teflon lippes lolll XD beyond I agree with your list. I think my main pet peeve is actually k-beauty. The dark lip stains/liquid lipsticks... They're just never quite vampy/muddy enough for me to get more than 1 color out of the range. I just like my red at lightest to still be as dark as Mahoney wood so the pinky more bright lively reds just look kinda off on me. Shame cause they are the only lip colors I've tried that don't dry out my lips, but I'm glad other people get to enjoy the ranges those companies offer. The closest I've found is the merzy shade in Bian Rose, which still is more saturated and less purpley than my preferences

    I was perusing Ulta with my daughter recently, who really wanted to look at things, so I took her… And I am so amazed at how many skincare makeup type products there are now that are just a tinted balm of sorts. They looked amazing swatch, but as soon as I swiped over it or patted over it, it did have that dull effect, and transferred terribly onto the tissue or my hand as I swiped it across. Something that I always account for is that I am already applying. Make up on top of skincare… I don’t need extra and in fact, this can actually conflict with what I’m already using. But in addition, I already have that skincare type texture that these make up brands are trying to create with pigment. I don’t need to add more of it on top, you know?
    Same daughter… Wanted a lip gloss set on Amazon. I got it for a birthday gift and she was begging me to try it. I could already tell they were the saran wrap with oil on it type of gloss, but I indulged her and was absolutely shocked at how masking it was. It was the first time I’ve tried anything like this and definitely agree with you that it is not comfortable or reassuring to be caring for my lips. It’s just supposed to be glossy, which might be OK for a lot of people! She absolutely loves these glosses, but I would like my lip products to nourish as well.

    I have a love-hate relationship with lipglosses that has really been kicked into gear by the current lip gloss mini-revival (feels like every brand is coming out with new ones). I lust over the beautiful promo pics, I love the moisturizing feel (when it’s a good one), the beautiful, translucent colors… my hair is constantly stuck to it.

    Tubing mascara. It does its job perfectly, but I like lighter fluffier lashes and I always end up hating the weight of having each lash completely surrounded by product. It’s also annoying when you are wearing other makeup, because you have to massage your lashes with water to get the tubes off and then blot your face dry so an oil cleanser can do its job on the rest.

    • @Emma-se5wm
      @Emma-se5wm 5 місяців тому +1

      100% hard agree. So many reviewers are like..."tubing mascaras are EvErYtHiNg, they're way easier to remove, yadda yadda..." but honestly I think they're more annoying to remove. Just lemme go to town with my oil cleanser on my whole face. I'm not convinced that those tubing fibers are great long term down the drain. And they really aren't cute on my sparse, thin lashes even though I thought they'd be a better fit? Weighed down the curl, too.

    I have a really pink undertone to my skin so my pet peeve is yellow undertones in face makeup. Often when I look at the range of colours in the store, there’s nothing but variations of yellow, with maybe one option that looks pinkish but is either super dark or super light. I always have to mix my own.

    i still love me some glossier skin tint. so many brands have tried to come out with a similar thing but they never dry down, or even go way too matte (tartes version). glossier manages to inherently reduce my redness (not just cover it up) and dries down without looking patchy or dry. plus i often mix it with heavier foundations to get my perfect level of coverage. i appreciate that it’s still around and can be so versatile. that said, the packaging SUCKS and looks SO terrible after a while 😂
