Congratulations on being the first reactors I've seen who are finally doing ELO!
Jeff lynne is a legend , writer , musician, singer and producer, Jeff is ELO
E.L.O. is my favorite rock band of all time. (though I love the 70's line up more, because the way Melvin and Hugh threw around their cello's and Mick rocking his blue violin were so brilliant.) I still play their albums today even though I am really in to heavy metal.
The current version of ELO (Jeff Lynne's ELO) has a live version of this on youtube which actually shows a rather tight group of musicians performing at a superior level. Funny how in many respects Richard Tandy was to ELO as Rick Wright was to Pink Floyd.
RIP Richard Tandy….. will be sadly missed.
ELO were my first 'favourite band' back in the mid-70s, before I found Rush. Still love them. Saw Jeff Lynne's ELO last year and it was magic.
Was that a strange magic! I too liked ELO but after T Rex but then found Rush - Fly by Night and Caress of Steel. This was the early and mid 70s but still listen to them all now and many others from the 60s and 70s Great times!!
I hopped on just to see your reactions again. Just so fantastic. Ty for this!
More ELO please!
So happy i came upon your channel! Love you both individually, and as a couple!
I’m so happy you did this one, I love ELO, so many fantastic songs. Living Thing is my ultimate favourite but I so love this song too. Not many reactions to this song so I’m so happy 😁
I'm new here and loving your channel. This has always been one of my favourite tracks. The sound ELO put out made me, a rock fan from the age of 7, want to listen to more "Classical music" and I did.
ELO what a band, what a concept ! Beautiful mix bringing a range of music's to all !
Thank you for another great vid \m/ \m/
Kel reminds me of how my daughter reacted to ELO and all the great music of my generation that I turned her on to over the years! Love it so much! My daughter shows that same sense of Joy at this music! She LOVES ELO, Queen, and so many others. I love opening these musical doors to her. And love watching Rich open these doors to Kel !
Great response!!!! Kel, please keep us informed as to your musical journey!!! ELO affected me similarly. I'm learning the cello (a bit) at age 58 and, thanks to virtual orchestras, I'm composing movie scores and adding symphony to my original work!
Love ELO glad your doing a reaction to this fantastic band.🎧👍
You two are great and you do such a fantastic job. Dave in the U.K.
Born in 69 and grew up on ELO and they were my first favorite band and still in my top 5
Great reaction and comments Kel, to the World's only three minute opera. I saw ELO live in Adelaide in 1978, it was amazing.
Thank you for the Rockaria review. ELO... I never stop loving ELO!
Saw Jeff Lynn's ELO live at Wembley 2 years ago. Fantastic concert, he's still got it!!
It's great to hear you both talking about the music given your different backgrounds. I'm an English rocker who has to thank his Uncle David for playing Jethro Tull Pink Floyd Genesis etc all the Prog Rock music when I was growing up in the early 70s. Love ELO as well. Keep on rockin' folks.
Rich, when I saw ELO live in Toronto, the spaceship concert, let me tell you, those guys rocked those chelos and violins. I just love watching Kel's reaction to these amped up instruments. Jeff Lynn is a musical genius!
First time I’ve ever thought, hmm...those weird goggles look great on that woman!
Lol
It's her Biggles look.
Thanks for the ELO reaction guys.
@Kel Have you ever turned the tables on Rich and reacted to some classical music that he's not heard before? That would be fun to see.
Like some 4th mvt from the Rach 3?
Kel I think that classical blues have made rock and roll come to fruition! Cheers!
9:00 "P'kaaa!" Oh, this sounds genuinely exciting! Love how you worded that... 'all the skills of a classical musician and all the desires of an unbridled child'...
Looking forward to see some of that in action.
That image immediately made me think of my favorite (and generally underrated) P-Funk keyboard hero: Bernie Worrell.... You should definitely check him out whether in private or in a reaction vid, Kel. I really think you would totally dig his vibe. He took his classical piano education to a whole new dimension in the seventies and ended up being a huge influence on keyboard players in many genres.
Saw ELO perform Rockaria in 1976 at Empire Pool Wembley. Amazing!
I was scrolling down and just came back up. KEL. THAT HELMET KILLS IT GOGGLES DOWN
Can't wait to hear Kel rock out!
I remember looking for this song in record stores back in the late 70s after hearing it, but not knowing the title of it; never found it. Finally got it by accident, when I bought ELOs Original Greatest Hits album in 79/80, and listened to it for the first time. Went through about 3 vinyl copies, a couple of cassettes and at least one CD since then.
One of the "Must Own" albums of the UK 80s, with Rumours, Bat out of Hell, In Through the Out Door, Eagles Greatest Hits and Night at the Opera.
I didn’t know Kel was the first person to fly across the Atlantic!
Love ELO, the show I see on TV every once in a while at Hyde Park is worth a watch, really great. HSAS, Hagar, Schon, Aaronson and Schrieve, also does a killer live version of Whiter Shade of Pale from about 1984. Love the hat, I still have an Angus Buck from an AC/DC show
One of my all time favorite, also both my sons liked this very much when they were just kids. My music teacher played this to us early 80’s (along with Kiss). He was jerk but his music taste was ok ;).
Great stuff thank you. I think possibly one of the first bands to combined orchestral instruments with Rock
was Love in the late 60s Listen to Alone again or. Arthur Lee is a great guitarist..
As a 57 year old Brit I love ELO.
Thanks Rich and Kel for pointing out the "oops" in this song. I've always enjoyed hearing those little noises on various songs. Two others that come to my mind are Merry Clayton's voice cracking while sing "Rape/Murder" in Gimme Me Shelter. If you listen carefully you can hear Mick Jagger's reaction--wooooh-- in the background. Second, if you listen carefully to the Beach Boys song "Wendy" you can hear Brian Wilson's cough after an extended falsetto run. Interestingly, that cough can't be heard on my CD, it's only heard on the album version. Luv your channel, keep up the great work.
ELO playing Roll Over Beethoven live, now there's a rocker.
Mr Blue Sky is another " quirky " ELO tune you'll love also. Enjoy your site.Kel mentioned starting to play her cello/piano again, ( mentioning Supertramp), Kel, ELO and Kansas will fit that skill set too.
Wow! Fool's Overture? Fantastic! I love a bit of Supertramp in among the dozen or two other bands I'm into. 😄❤
The entire album "On the third day" is superb! One of my all time favourites!
This is from A New World Record
Excellent reaction! I always thought that the Beatles were first with orchestrated rock (Eleanor Rigby etc) but I could be mistaken! Thx! The hat becomes you! -Terry from Canoga Park
I think you would really like The Piano Guys because of your classical background! They are a group of dads from Utah who play the piano and cello, and make AMAZING music videos! Their blending of pop and classical pieces are perfection!
Well said kel its amazing how much classical instruments sound so good in rock and metal perfect a combination . Rich i'am in the same age bracket
First I like your channel and I wish you well. The song is pronounced Rock Aria not rock area thirdly the musicianship was not aided by any electronic devices other than amps I saw them live at Madison Square Garden n77 they reproduce their sound live as it was on their albums I've been a lifelong fan. Jeff Lynn is a musical genius. And the rest of his band or highly talented musicians as well
Rich, it goes back even further than that, a band in the 70s called renaissance, took renaissance music and added a rock flavor to it. You can find they're video's on youtube, I think Kel will really love them.
No one makes strings sound cool like ELO. Been a big fan of the band since the mid-70s.
I have all the ELO albums , been a fan since I was a kid
My brother loved ELO. I like them better now, than I did in the day. At that time, I was listening to Kiss.... I was only 8 when this came out, and all about the "Destroyer" album. Still LOVE " Sweet Pain" and " Do You Love Me"...
Love this!!
Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra from The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame site: "Picking up where the Beatles left off, ELO expanded the concept of great melodies, epic song structures and grand orchestrations. ELO added an exciting mix of elements into rock and roll, including disco rhythms and electronic studio wizardry. Imagine a marriage of tuneful, rocking pop songs with instruments from the symphonic realm, and you’ve got the blueprint for what made ELO one of the most popular groups of the 1970s and beyond.
Jeff Lynne, ELO’s vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, co-founder, and frontman, conceived of a rarefied musical sphere in which cellos coexisted with guitars, and where classically tinged progressive rock intersected with hook-filled, radio-friendly pop.
The result: ELO’s boundary-breaking approach to rock that resonated with a global audience, both as a pop singles act and as album-oriented rockers with deep-track appeal".
My favourite (and earliest) ELO song.
The female opera singer in his video was actually the bands bass player who was called Kelly Groucutt, Sadly no longer with us) singing falsetto. Saw ELO live in Wembley in 1978 and that gave the game away!
The joy is contagious...
Glad you two enjoyed Iron Maiden! :)
I vaguely remember this song. I know I've heard it before, but it's probably been 30+ years.
May I suggest you those titles ? I think you're gonna like some of them:
- Stevie Ray Vaughan - Riviera Paradise (live from Austin)
- Billy Idol - Flesh for Fantasy (live from Chicago 2009)
- Toto - Falling in Between (live from Paris 2007)
- Joe Bonamassa - Sloe Gin (live at Redrocks)
- Gary Moore - Red House (live)
Thanks. I love watching you both. Rock'n'roll !
Love your videos Guys, your enthusiasm for the music is infectious.
And its great to see Kel coming over from the dark side and feeling the force.
Please react to:
Mr Blue Sky- ELO
War Pigs -Black Sabbath
Ace of Spades- Motorhead
as a added note..my son decided on trombone..i was a drummer...he walks to me ans says sorry dad..trombones are not in rock n roll...but i helped him..with music tech i knew and he bacame number one trombone in high school..and he found out later that..yes rock n roll does have trombones..such a universal sound..any instrument can be in..look at ac/dc..bagpipes?...awesome..ty for your thoughts..and again..keep it up..everyone wants to have me drum one more time..but at 65 i have lost some reactions or coordination..don't let your thoughts or dreams slip away..DO IT!!!!..ty again:)
Hi kel-n-rich I would love to see Kel react to status quo live at the proms. You will see a professional classical orchestra getting their grove on. Love your channel from across the pond in god's own county Yorkshire.
Love the pilot headgear from the early days of aviation.
Lots of wrong info in the comments. Welsh soprano Mary Thomas sang the operatic bits on the album. Kelly Groucutt (the bass player) sang those bits during live performances.
Bob Calvert of Hawkwind used to wear a hat just like Kel's. He made a few solo albums in addition to his work with Hawkwind. He had bipolar disorder and sadly died of a heart attack at age 43 back in 1988. Love his song 'The Right Stuff.'
ELO is on of my favorite bands, especially when they used real string instruments before switching to synths on the last couple of albums. So many great songs. 'Rockaria' is great, mentioning 4 classical composers in the lyrics. "And Verdi's always creeping from her room," is a funny line.
There is a woman in the video appearing to sing the opera lines in this song. However when they recorded and performed this song, a male member of the group named Kelly Groucutt did the opera lines. He had such a beautiful high tenor range. Sadly he is passed away now.
You are correct that Kelly did the aria part during live shows. The original album version, on A New World Record was done by Mary Thomas.
Hope we get to hear some of your dreams soon, Kel!
Very cool. I was down in Fort Lauderdale for show couple weeks ago, but was recovering from a little battle with Diverticulitis, so wasn't very social. I also was front row back here in Jersey and posted about 12 videos. You guys should review one! I couldn't find any other ELO songs you reacted too? While "Rockaria" is a great song, I believe a great song to react to would be either "Turn to Stone" or "Mr. Blue Sky" and then get deeper into the band with maybe "10538 Overture" or "Telephone Line", and then from there plenty more. Rock on!!
I just noticed the Jackson Concorde in the background. Beautiful guitar!
When it comes to mixing rock/ pop with classical, ELO and The Moody Blues both consistently deliver the goods. But I still say the perfect combination of rock and classical is the Who "Love Reign O'er Me". We absolutely need to see Kel react to that song.
Not want.
NEED
Thanks for the great videos , I love your stuff so far ..as Arnold Schwarzenegger would say , ILL BE BACK
Rich.... It's pronounced Rock - Aria as in the classical ARIA. Or the guitar brand Aria.
I just heard Kel mention the electric chello I'm very surprised she hasn't wanted to check out the two cellos, a couple guys from Europe that have played them all over the world doing rock like AC/DC and others, and really get the crowds gone crazy.🎻
its been said, had the beatles not disbanded that ELO are how the beatles would have sounded during the seventies and eighties
John Lennon in an interview said that ELO was "Beatles II." Not sure if that was meant as praise or not but...There ya go.
@@pauldoerwang4879 More likely a throwaway,sarcastic remark.
@@folkme3042 I tend to agree.
@@folkme3042 He was quite the fan, can recall he waxed lyrical about Showdown.
My favorite ELO song, which is saying something. We put together a band to do this song in my high school talent show, and yes, I sang lead and played keyboards. Fun fact about this song I didn’t see in the comments (apologies if I missed it): The “aria” part isn’t in any real language. Jeff just told the singer to just sing some syllables that would sound like opera... worked pretty well...
My favourite ELO moment was at the Sydney Hordern Pavilion (I think) when the audience caught them out using backing tapes which were playing when they clearly weren't. The audience went ballistic. Jeff Lynne tried to explain but hundreds of people attacked the stage and the band ran for their lives. I don't think they have toured Oz since. LOL!
Such a fun fun band
This is one of My Favorite ELO Songs but I didn't know what the Woman Vocalist. Was singing in Latin until A Year ago. I googled it
Tight rope Kel you will love it x
10538 Overture
Mr Blue Sky
Wild West Hero
Telephone Line
Evil Woman
Roll Over Beethoven
Mr Blue Sky will always be my favorite ELO song..
PageMonster Love 10538 Overture
@PageMonster
I always wonder why nobody ever includes Mama Belle. The crunchiest Les Paul ever.
Standing In The Rain
Turn to stone
Great to see you guys enjoying ELO. Please listen to their album El Dorado (in full ). Even if you can't do a reaction you should listen to it together and maybe just comment on it. Any ELO fan will say that it's one of their best. Before they became 'commercial".
I get a kick when Newbie starts to bop. One of my fondest memories is my oldest in 1990 giving the Metal Salute ( index and pinky ) singing " Get Your Motor Running............
The original concept of the electric light orchestra died after ELO 1 when Roy Wood left and the dynamic changed completely. 10538 Overture is how ELO should sound to me and I think Kel as a classically trained musician would appreciate that ELO more than the 'poppier' incarnation. But what do I know? The became one of the most succesful bands ever.
Hi Kel I recently bought a Yamaha SVC110 electric Cello, it is fantastic, it is on another level to most other brands, not cheap though, but so worth it
Little factoid.... the "opera singer" in this recording was actually Kelly Groucutt, the bands bass player singing falsetto! I saw them live in Wembley in 1978 and was shocked!
Try listening to..."Dreaming of 4000". Classic ELO.
On The Third Day is their best album.
I really appreciate the shout out, and I wish to invite you to Join me for a Concert experience. I don't know specifics thanks to this Virus, but I would love if you visited Minnesota for Moondance Jam, We- Fest or the Red River Valley Fair. or even a concert at the Bluestem Theater in Moorhead.
E.L.O instant click lol. One of the few bands my husband and I actually agree on 😁
My self expression is through the music I suggest to react to, but none of them have been reacted too! And Kel through life one has to reinvent themselves many times and why not you with your skills your way ahead of some people just starting out, like me! I am going to be 65 soon and just started learning to play guitar, a life time dream never fulfilled until now!
Kel's looking super 'steampunk' in that AWESOME flight cap.....
I would love to know how much this one costs...i couldn't find it on any IM Internet Pages.....
Kel I love your aviator headgear. You're too sweet. Rich, you're a lucky man!
Wow, I'm not sure how I missed this one.
I'm loving the "Steam Punk Kel" look.
Still have the album from 1971 the Electric Light Orchestra and Roy Wood was still in the band then, a great band from Birmingham aka Brum.
Just love ELO
The more recent ELO albums Zoom and Alone in the Universe, each have some great tracks too.
love kel
rich open your music mind from 70s - 80s so much more
You just needed a Barcus-Berry electric pickup for your cello, Kel. I know what you mean about the "child of music" being very, very demanding. I still love my classical music AND my rock music and all the other music I love...for me, none of it pushes any other types out of the way, it all depends on the "weather patterns of the soul", also known as emotion. Love your reactions as always, Kel-n-Rich!
This song defines you guys, should be a theme song! She's sweet on Wagner
I think she'd die for Beethoven
She loves the way Puccini lays down a tune
And Verdi's always creeping from her room
Goosebumps my highest rating for Hey video
With that flight hat, you need to take a sidecar ride with me and my human.
I listened to your description of you wanting to plug your cello into the electricity , but the question is , have you listened to 2 Cellos yet , with your background in cello it would be an amazing reaction to see what you think of their amazing renditions of rock anthems with just 2 cellos and a drummer
In the other ELO Rockaria videos they have Kelly Groucutt sing the opera singer part.
Grew up listening to ELO and personally the best track for me is Twilight ! A masterpiece of music .
feeling down find these two and you will be smiling very soon
