Every damn phrase of this song is profound....every phrase....Jackson's ability to put our feelings into words is so rare and special....there's no one quite like him....simply amazing.
He was basically a kid when this was composed. 20's. Musical composition, execution, lyrics, voice, all from that one young man makes him what, prodigy, virtuoso, savant? Wise beyond his years
It’s crazy. He was 26 when it was recorded. I was 18. I remember listening to it to and from college, so cathartic as I looked back on a challenging childhood. Now I am in my 60’s and it brings back all the feelings and some melancholy. His music has been a wonderful companion. How did he get so wise so young. Thank you, Jackson!
Saw JB for the first time this weekend. Never fully appreciated this artist before. This song which made me cry, talks to my personal history and the good women who had the misfortune of loving me when I was young and cruelly stupid.
He and his music was the soundtrack of a very dark youth I lived through in the 70s. In addition to his voice that melts ice I am drawn to the beautiful piano playing throughout...my instrument. Playing his songs on my old upright got me through the darkest of adolescent years. Sometimes 5 hours would go by at that piano until my family would finally make me stop. Self music therapy.
Jackson Browne touches the painful places in my heart that I may have thought were healed but with his poetic words and music the water works begin. I still long for the lost love I had that slipped through my fingers never to be held again.
This song never fails to break my heart. Strange how us humans find it therapeutic. Jackson Browne is probably the best American songwriter of the CENTURY. Living on the east coast, and in the south to boot, I'll likely never get to see him perform live, which breaks the songwriters heart in me the most.
Agreed....he's now in his 70's and I doubt I'll ever see him either....there's some really fabulous live shows of his here on you tube@@JeffChastainMusic
ONE OF THE VERY BEST WORDSMITHS ON THE PLANET. THE SOUNDTRACK OF MY LIFE AND MANY MANY OTHERS. THANK YOU JACKSON BROWNE. I SANG THIS SONG TO MY GRANDFATHER WHEN HE WAS IN HIS 80'S . HE HARD A LIFE OF HARD WORK AND SOLITARY EFFORT. THIS SONG ALWAYS REMINDS ME OF HIM AND I THANK YOU AGAIN JACKSON FOR THE MEMORIES.
I first saw Jackson in 1973 with my future wife. Already he was an artist, and perfectionist. I saw him in 2013 with my grown daughter, and he was superlative, like a fine wine that had aged 40 yrs., but an artist who painted his masterpieces with words. My brother passed away in Nov 2015 after a long battle with untreated bi-polar disease, alcoholism, COPD. At his memorial service, my sister-in -law had set up a slide display of his life. The slide display was accompanied by Jackson's "for A Dancer". I turned to my son and daughter, and I stated, "how F--Ken' appropriate a song to be playing for your uncle." I have no idea if the song was selected by my brother, or his wife, but that would have been the song I would have selected, because it fit him to a T. Jackson's songs fit in to so many places of the soundtrack of my life. Peace
First of all, so sorry for your loss. Wish I was with you in 73 my friend. I was only 5 years old here in the Motor City. I've taken my kids to "old school" concerts and they loved everyone of them. Them bands from the 60's and 70's will be around long after we are gone. God bless you and your family brother.
Phizeke S So beautiful brother!!! The power of music and the power of love transcends all!!! I’m sure you will be together one day until then may the fore winds blow you safely home....
Amazing beautiful heartbreaking the power of love family music and Jackson the best to ever do it bridge the gap between humanity pain sorrow and of course joy!! Peace to you and your family brother....
One of the BEST, if not THE BEST songwriter in the business. I've been a fan since I first heard Jackson in the early 70's. His lyrics touch your heart and your soul like no other!
Every song that Jackson Browne is amazing. The best show I ever saw was him I left there knowing that i actually was in the same room as a great artist.
I have followed Jackson since the early 70's. Seems he messed with many different styles and arrangements. In this time of his music I think he has found that truly the lyrics are what he has to present to us! Jackson is truly one of this generations greats. Listen to his solo version of These Days! One of the most wonderfully presented emotionally songs of our time. Jackson, you have found where you belonged all the time. Our Hero! Thanks for the music!
I agree Patrick Campbell, there is so much love and appreciation for Jackson in this world, i just hope he's aware of how much. He is so very special ,
A classic song from Jackson ! One of the best songs from one of the best song writers ! What more could you want ! All best , and thanks for posting , Dave
For almost 50 yrs for us old folks. I love Jackson. He has his own site now on utube . Plays all these great songs in his house. Still sounds great as ever. Look him up. Wonderful.
I am so pleased to have found this song again. I have been searching for it for about two years but in all the wrong places, it seems clear why now , as I mistakenly but firmly believed I had heard it on a Carly Simon album ! However, it was in fact Joan Baez singing a cover version , very well I might add, of this poignant Jackson Browne song whose brilliant lyrics speak to my heart , especially through the lens of my camera !
To my East Coast Love……💜Thank you for giving me Jackson first thing in the morning …… I wish we would have made that plane to elope to Vegas in the early ‘70s……Forever Your West Coast Girl ❤️……………
My girlfriend, Linda gave me my first, tape for a Christmas present & I fell in love with, his lyrics, from that say on Thanks Linda^ for teaching me how to drive a clutch. 😄
Looking through some photographs I found inside a drawer I was taken by a photograph of you There were one or two I know that You would have liked a little more But they didn't show your spirit quite as true You were turning 'round to see who was behind you And I took your childish laughter by surprise And at the moment that my camera happened to find you There was just a trace of sorrow in your eyes Now the things that I remember Seem so distant and so small Though it hasn't really been that long a time What I was seeing wasn't what was happening at all Although for a while, our path did seem to climb When you see through love's illusions, There lies the danger And your perfect lover just looks like a perfect fool So you go running off in search of a perfect stranger While the loneliness seems to spring from your life Like a fountain from a pool Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light You've known that hollow sound Of your own steps in flight You've had to hide sometimes But now you're all right And it's good to see your smiling face tonight Now for you and me it may not be That hard to reach our dreams But that magic feeling never seems to last And while the future's there for anyone to change Still you know it seems It would be easier sometimes to change the past I'm just one or two years And a couple of changes behind you In my lessons at love's pain and heartache school Where if you feel too free And you need something to remind you There's this loneliness springing up from your life Like a fountain from a pool Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light You've known that hollow sound Of your own steps in flight You've had to hide sometimes But now you're all right And it's good to see your smiling face tonight Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light You've known that hollow sound Of your own steps in flight You've had to struggle, you've had to fight To keep understanding and compassion in sight You could be laughing at me, you've got the right But you go on smiling so clear and so bright
I've always felt this is how the song should be truly presented in, the drums in the older versions were some what unfitting, in my opinion. Thank you, he played this live for me at Hanford, CA 2011. One of the only concerts I've ever cried at, Tool being the other.
Our good fortune as well as our sorrow to have treasures like these to share and no takers. The appetite for meaningful creativity is in the sugar/salt/fat mode again. At least we don't have to dig out the vinyl! How's Joni?
I love his songs. But so many of them are melancholy. I've got a wedding dance coming up with my daughter in 3 months. I get to pick two songs for Dad - bride dance, to get to her for the band to learn in time. It's a great band. Any suggestions? Something deep and beautiful and appropriate, a little bittersweet is okay. Anything from this man's songbook is a treasure. I'd welcome suggestions.
sure...do you recognize that dog's mussel? I sure do. An AKC Collie we called Hurk. Wisest soul on this Earth. So where we? learning that young Jackson Browne was genius check out late for the sky...isn't it true all of us can recognize his creation and cadence with just three notes...John baker 2 July 2022 hope you haven't traded life's bright and fragile glow for the glitter and the rugue? So very true
His lyrics express our deepest feelings. I can't say the words that he brings out. I don't think the words exist in any language.
He was basically a kid when this was composed. 20's. Musical composition, execution, lyrics, voice, all from that one young man makes him what, prodigy, virtuoso, savant? Wise beyond his years

A great influence upon my life. I have seen him concert and witnessed impecalble musicianship with a soul of a poet.
Such a brilliant songwriter, loved him since I was a teen, many years ago. His music still touches my soul, floods with me with so many memories.
Every song on Late for the Sky is amazing. God bless you Jackson Browne for giving us this so many years ago.

For A Dancer : the words I used on my brother Jeff's bronze memorial. JB blessed us, like our brothers blessed us.

This acoustic version is one of the very best performances of this song by an enduring, magical musician. Sometimes simple is better.

You have good taste Brenda.
Music is not what you hear, it's what it makes you feel !!🧡
My god....what a song...."while the loneliness seems to spring from your life like a fountain from a pool..."....god, how relatable....😭
JB A true National Treasure
Lyrics like this come along only rarely in life.
Kathleen Renn wow. This song is devastating but beautiful.
Ive said that since I found him.
Waaaaaaaw great song
So true. Love several of his songs for that reason
How do singer songwriters find these words that talk to each of us personally and deeply. I miss you mom.
and write them so young....
Simply the most poetic beautiful heartbreaking song.... Jacksone is a treasure the likes of which come once maybe twice in a lifetime

When u see thru loves illusion. I lived it in the seventies. She left me for a Dr.. Came back a yr later. Married 29 years.
My girlfriend, Linda gave me my first, tape for a Christmas present & I fell in love with, his lyrics, from that say on Thanks Linda^ for teaching me how to drive a clutch. 😄
@REBA McEntire ,Hey is this a joke?
the most devastating breakup song ever written
With out question Patrick, well said!!
Looking through some photographs
I found inside a drawer
I was taken by a photograph of you
There were one or two I know that
You would have liked a little more
But they didn't show your spirit quite as true
You were turning 'round to see who was behind you
And I took your childish laughter by surprise
And at the moment that my camera happened to find you
There was just a trace of sorrow in your eyes
Now the things that I remember
Seem so distant and so small
Though it hasn't really been that long a time
What I was seeing wasn't what was happening at all
Although for a while, our path did seem to climb
When you see through love's illusions,
There lies the danger
And your perfect lover just looks like a perfect fool
So you go running off in search of a perfect stranger
While the loneliness seems to spring from your life
Like a fountain from a pool
Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light
You've known that hollow sound
Of your own steps in flight
You've had to hide sometimes
But now you're all right
And it's good to see your smiling face tonight
Now for you and me it may not be
That hard to reach our dreams
But that magic feeling never seems to last
And while the future's there for anyone to change
Still you know it seems
It would be easier sometimes to change the past
I'm just one or two years
And a couple of changes behind you
In my lessons at love's pain and heartache school
Where if you feel too free
And you need something to remind you
There's this loneliness springing up from your life
Like a fountain from a pool
Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light
You've known that hollow sound
Of your own steps in flight
You've had to hide sometimes
But now you're all right
And it's good to see your smiling face tonight
Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light
You've known that hollow sound
Of your own steps in flight
You've had to struggle, you've had to fight
To keep understanding and compassion in sight
You could be laughing at me, you've got the right
But you go on smiling so clear and so bright
I've always felt this is how the song should be truly presented in, the drums in the older versions were some what unfitting, in my opinion. Thank you, he played this live for me at Hanford, CA 2011. One of the only concerts I've ever cried at, Tool being the other.
" . . you've known that hollow sound of your own steps in flight. . " . .
At 55, I am just now discovering this tune. And I'm blown away (again!) Is it just me -- or are the chord progressions reminiscent of ASIA?

We are getting older but now have pease
I was born the same year as Jackson, 1948. Me in September, Jackson in October.
Yeah, so . . .
does anybody know where one might find this piano sheet music? I can only find the album/accompaniment version, but I'd much rather learn this one!
This is supposed to be about Joni Mitchell, and it seems to fit.

I knew a young woman like that once. We were never meant to remain as lovers. I hope that she's allright.
I love his songs. But so many of them are melancholy. I've got a wedding dance coming up with my daughter in 3 months. It's a shame the auto tune is latching so quick on the vocal but not so much that it hides the brilliance of this song. It's just too good.
Auto tune? No way.
