Every damn phrase of this song is profound....every phrase....Jackson's ability to put our feelings into words is so rare and special....there's no one quite like him....simply amazing.

His lyrics express our deepest feelings. I can't say the words that he brings out. I don't think the words exist in any language.

He was basically a kid when this was composed. 20's. Musical composition, execution, lyrics, voice, all from that one young man makes him what, prodigy, virtuoso, savant? Wise beyond his years

It’s crazy. He was 26 when it was recorded. I was 18. I remember listening to it to and from college, so cathartic as I looked back on a challenging childhood. Now I am in my 60’s and it brings back all the feelings and some melancholy. His music has been a wonderful companion. How did he get so wise so young. Thank you, Jackson!

Saw JB for the first time this weekend. Never fully appreciated this artist before. This song which made me cry, talks to my personal history and the good women who had the misfortune of loving me when I was young and cruelly stupid.

He and his music was the soundtrack of a very dark youth I lived through in the 70s. In addition to his voice that melts ice I am drawn to the beautiful piano playing throughout...my instrument. Playing his songs on my old upright got me through the darkest of adolescent years. Sometimes 5 hours would go by at that piano until my family would finally make me stop. Self music therapy.

Jackson Browne touches the painful places in my heart that I may have thought were healed but with his poetic words and music the water works begin. I still long for the lost love I had that slipped through my fingers never to be held again.

This song never fails to break my heart. Strange how us humans find it therapeutic.
Jackson Browne is probably the best American songwriter of the CENTURY.
Living on the east coast, and in the south to boot, I'll likely never get to see him perform live, which breaks the songwriters heart in me the most.

I first saw Jackson in 1973 with my future wife. Already he was an artist, and perfectionist. I saw him in 2013 with my grown daughter, and he was superlative, like a fine wine that had aged 40 yrs., but an artist who painted his masterpieces with words. My brother passed away in Nov 2015 after a long battle with untreated bi-polar disease, alcoholism, COPD. At his memorial service, my sister-in -law had set up a slide display of his life. The slide display was accompanied by Jackson's "for A Dancer". I turned to my son and daughter, and I stated, "how F--Ken' appropriate a song to be playing for your uncle." I have no idea if the song was selected by my brother, or his wife, but that would have been the song I would have selected, because it fit him to a T. Jackson's songs fit in to so many places of the soundtrack of my life. Peace

First of all, so sorry for your loss. Wish I was with you in 73 my friend. I was only 5 years old here in the Motor City. I've taken my kids to "old school" concerts and they loved everyone of them. Them bands from the 60's and 70's will be around long after we are gone. God bless you and your family brother.

I have followed Jackson since the early 70's. Seems he messed with many different styles and arrangements. In this time of his music I think he has found that truly the lyrics are what he has to present to us! Jackson is truly one of this generations greats. Listen to his solo version of These Days! One of the most wonderfully presented emotionally songs of our time. Jackson, you have found where you belonged all the time. Our Hero! Thanks for the music!

I am so pleased to have found this song again. I have been searching for it for about two years but in all the wrong places, it seems clear why now , as I mistakenly but firmly believed I had heard it on a Carly Simon album ! However, it was in fact Joan Baez singing a cover version , very well I might add, of this poignant Jackson Browne song whose brilliant lyrics speak to my heart , especially through the lens of my camera !

    Looking through some photographs
    I found inside a drawer
I was taken by a photograph of you
There were one or two I know that
You would have liked a little more
But they didn't show your spirit quite as true
You were turning 'round to see who was behind you
And I took your childish laughter by surprise
And at the moment that my camera happened to find you
There was just a trace of sorrow in your eyes
Now the things that I remember
Seem so distant and so small
Though it hasn't really been that long a time
What I was seeing wasn't what was happening at all
Although for a while, our path did seem to climb
When you see through love's illusions,
    There lies the danger
And your perfect lover just looks like a perfect fool
So you go running off in search of a perfect stranger
While the loneliness seems to spring from your life
Like a fountain from a pool
Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light
    You've known that hollow sound
Of your own steps in flight
    You've had to hide sometimes
    But now you're all right
And it's good to see your smiling face tonight
Now for you and me it may not be
That hard to reach our dreams
But that magic feeling never seems to last
And while the future's there for anyone to change
    Still you know it seems
It would be easier sometimes to change the past
I'm just one or two years
And a couple of changes behind you
In my lessons at love's pain and heartache school
Where if you feel too free
And you need something to remind you
There's this loneliness springing up from your life
Like a fountain from a pool
Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light
    You've known that hollow sound
Of your own steps in flight
    You've had to hide sometimes
    But now you're all right
And it's good to see your smiling face tonight
Fountain of sorrow, fountain of light
    You've known that hollow sound
Of your own steps in flight
You've had to struggle, you've had to fight
To keep understanding and compassion in sight
You could be laughing at me, you've got the right
But you go on smiling so clear and so bright

I've always felt this is how the song should be truly presented in, the drums in the older versions were some what unfitting, in my opinion. Thank you, he played this live for me at Hanford, CA 2011. One of the only concerts I've ever cried at, Tool being the other.

I love his songs. But so many of them are melancholy. I've got a wedding dance coming up with my daughter in 3 months. I get to pick two songs for Dad - bride dance, to get to her for the band to learn in time. It's a great band. Any suggestions? Something deep and beautiful and appropriate, a little bittersweet is okay. Anything from this man's songbook is a treasure. I'd welcome suggestions.
