Part of that is because the mythical effect of using some sort of grip enhancer for a pitcher and the actual effect are two very different things. Not that it should be legal, but it is minimal and mostly tied to accuracy not added movement.
In the Pine Tar game, one thing the announcers got wrong: The rule had nothing to do with pine tar hitting the trademark. The rule was (and is) that you can have pine tar a maximum of 18 inches from the knob of the bat. When they laid the bat across home plate, they were doing so because home plate is 17 inches across, so they could see if the pine tar exceeded that by an inch. The rule still exists--you cannot use a bat with more than 18 inches of pine tar. Now, though, the penalty is only that the batter has to get a new bat. He is not out for using an illegal bat.
Even then the batter was not out. The umpires screwed up the ruling which resulted in the game being protested, overturned, and replayed from immediately after the home run was hit.

After the home run, Yankees manager Billy Martin cited to the umpires a rule, stating that any foreign substance on a bat could extend no further than 18 inches from the knob. The umpires measured the amount of pine tar, a legal substance used by hitters to improve their grip, on Brett's bat; the pine tar extended about 24 inches. The home plate umpire, Tim McClelland, signaled Brett out, ending the game as a Yankees win. Brett charged out of the dugout directly toward McClelland, and had to be physically restrained by two umpires and Royals manager Dick Howser. The Royals protested the game, and American League president Lee MacPhail upheld the protest, reasoning that the bat should have been excluded from future use, but the home run should not have been nullified. I'm from New York City and a die hard Yankee fan. I don't think they should have called that stupid call. Brett (now a hall of famer) didn't deserve that. I love it when cheaters get all defensive and start cussing out the people who just caught them cheating like scumbags. Stop cheating. It's that simple.
I remember seeing the Brett freakout on a Sports Illustrated Bloopers tape from the late 80s. "Such a simple task. Strike a leather bound ball of twine with a sturdy stick of wood."
These announcers would defend the Yankees for murdering the entire opposing team midway through the game. "What you have to realize is -- LOTS of teams kill their opponents!"
the announcer was an EX pitcher (the great Al Leiter) who would know more than you that yes, ALL pitchers use some substance to grip the ball better. It isn’t about throwing a spit ball, it’s about getting a better grip. Any young pitcher coming up is taught to use a grip substance. Rosin is a joke. If you are going to make it against the rules then you need to just not have anything used for better grip. Get rid of the rosin then because what’s the point? And of course it happens to one Yankee pitcher (who was traded for by the way so he always probably did the same thing even when he came up through the Mariners system), but he’s a Yankee at the moment so attack the Yankees as usual. As said, you continue to use what works best for you growing up and becoming a pro pitcher.

I love it when cheaters get all defensive and start cussing out the people who just caught them cheating like scumbags.
Stop cheating. It's that simple.
That's the first time I've ever seen the umpires restrain someone like that. These days they normally don't do anything.
I remember seeing the Brett freakout on a Sports Illustrated Bloopers tape from the late 80s. "Such a simple task. Strike a leather bound ball of twine with a sturdy stick of wood."
0:21 that fan on the right side, pointing the neck that he knew where LOL
I love Jim Joyce's nonchalant ejection of Smith.
I love how Smith was all pissed off because he got caught
These announcers would defend the Yankees for murdering the entire opposing team midway through the game. "What you have to realize is -- LOTS of teams kill their opponents!"
They really weren't that defensive. That's a reach.
Pat it’s called making a hyperbolic joke
the announcer was an EX pitcher (the great Al Leiter) who would know more than you that yes, ALL pitchers use some substance to grip the ball better.
This was ahead of its time 🤧
Perfect timing for this video right now lmao
I love the walk of shame
i mean you shouldnt cheat but if you are dont make it so obvious

I was at the Sox/Yanks game when he got tossed. Checked his hat, glove, then touched his neck and......ADIOS! Pine Tar Pineda 🤣🤣🤣
We need a mic’d up foreign substances compilation.
8:20 dude beating his cup over and over
hahahahah thank you

Comment thief.
Well played
@@nomobjustice who are you, the comment police? Go to reddit
Lmaoo
You are a foreign substance
Do the coaches usually know when the players are doing this or no?
PinkCottonCandy half of the time no, that's why they get so disappointed
iEvenZZ Ohh okay, I see, thanks.
How about almost always, yes. Billy Martin was known for teaching his players to cheat.
+erik gonzales Can you demonstrate or explain your reasoning for how you know, that they know?
@@chillinchum
I wouldnt think it'd be all or even most of them, its on a person to person basis so maybe half, maybe more or maybe less. Nobody will ever really know.
You know what makes Me Laugh, the commentators, when it's their team cheating, they rationalise, they state "oh its a cold night, he needed that pine tar for better grip, he wasn't cheating", but when its an opposing Team, oh the commentators are going off the wall, they state, and ive seen this first hand in my life, "he has a foreign substance in his glove", or "he has something in his back pocket, he's cheating", i just laugh at that shit all the time.
I love how they’re like haha I’ll just hide the bat. That whole interaction was amazing
I love when they get mad at the umpires for kicking them out. They’re mad they got caught
2:39 Looks like Zach Hample
lol it does
+EXE-Edits I love that logo rofl
Lol!😂😂
he does live in new York lol
Brycita lol it does!!!
5:12 you know your fucked when all the umpires are looking at you
First dude could not have been more obvious 😭😭
Pineda really thought he was black enough to hide that pine tar.
5:20 When your teacher finds the unfinished homework that you, "Left at home."
2:50 bruh, Look at the score at the bottom left. I’d be bored as hell in this game. I won’t even care if they have a foreign substance.
pineda had given up 2 runs and already thrown 40 pitches through 1 2/3. the pine tar obviously wasn’t helping much.
Travis Kong dirty
Never tell that pitcher a secret - THAT was the best hiding spot you could think of?!🤣🤣🤣🤣
"I'm not saying every pitcher, I'm not saying every time"
Some people think cheating is okay is how that translates
This video is what Red Sox and Astros watch to get ready for the World Series.
you shouldn't need to use a foreign substance if your good enough to play
@James Tisdale Why are you even here dumbass
The umps who wait until they can get the manager of the team out to check are the nice ones.
8:22 wtf is the dude on the right doing 😂😂😂
13:21 lmao that umpire wasn't scared at all
I love the batman theme during the discussion about the bat.
How about everyone gets pine tar and steroids.
tiggfigg also LOL
tiggfigg Lol start their own league call it "mlb extreme"
Ray Scott - make it like mlb slugfest where the batters can charge the after getting bean I'll be fucking down to watch
Ray Scott i like that lol
also they can use metal bats that would be insane LMAO
I would've love to hear what George Brett said, probably was some gibberish, he went ballistic on the umps.
should make a compilation of every Houston home game from 2017-2019
Still won game 6 and 7 on the Road in the World Series. 🤷♂️
7:30 did he tell on his own player? Why not take him if the mound and make him clean it and send him back in? Am I missing something here it looked like the rays coach came up and told the umpire about it maybe I’m wrong
Here wondering the same thing but your comment is the only one that brought it up 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
Why don't they hide it better? You don't need a mound of it inside of your glove, on your neck or wherever. Just a tiny little bit. Don't use it but maybe once in an inning. If you're messing with your pocket, adjusting your glove constantly, touching your face or neck constantly, etc...yes, you're going to be called out.
I love how the Yankees broadcasters where defending him for cheating.
"Those are the rules" Yeah what a defense
@@GinkgoPete and then goes on to explain that he should be allowed anyway

The way how Brett got up & ran out @ 13:21 mark.
Remember it like it was yesterday, great to see it again just to see how f~ing mad George Brett got. 😤🤣
6:54 how do you flick your fingers that fast?!
whats the song the organ is playing at 11:28?
1:52 If I was the owner of the camera Girardi put his hands on, I would be right there to pull him away from it, or I would say "Stop touching it or you will be in a Boston jail the rest of the night."
George Brett was exonerated, got the homer and the Royals won the replayed game.
The game wasn't replayed. It was simply restarted from that point.
@@SarahDigsHockey Thanks, Karen. And it was replayed, because all of the game from Brett's homer onward was cancelled, deleted; and then replayed. Happy?
I've always found it interesting how the ump pointed at Brett with the bat - something that usually isn't taken kindly in baseball.
The George Brett Pine Tar Incident bat was seen at the American League Office and the MLB Office and the distance from the trademark to the pine tar was 6 inches, it's not allowed to be closer than 8 inches
I'm not the biggest fan of baseball. I'll watch the World Series throughout but not very many regular season games. But I'll watch the heck out of some compilations. Lol I just find it more fascinating. Lol
He almost got away with it on the 1rst clip😂
6:32 glove hand shaking hella bad cuz he knows he's caught.
First guy didn't get away with it. I suppose you got to be a "Wesley Snipes" black to go unnoticed.
Or vantablack
That refs mustache at 5.11 is fantastic 😍
6:45 song playing in the background is country music it’s called barefoot blue jean night by Jake Owen
Thanks man
I've never seen a human become so unglued as much as George Brett after he was called out.
Is it true that pine tar doesn't alter the path the ball travels? Seems odd that batters are allowed to use it but pitchers aren't.
billygowhoop it helps for grip dumbass, to help them grip the bat
Actually it is used to make the ball go farther.
billygowhoop pine tar helps the pitcher get better grip on the ball which helps him put more spin on it to have better breaking balls
Better grip would aid in every pitch, it isn't voodoo magic that allows for those extra mystical curve balls or breaking balls. It also just helps batters have a better grip, once again assisting in ALL aspects of batting, not just channeling juju from the magical pine trees in the sky to make the ball float extra distance. it really isn't super complicated
funny shit is that mike fiers was “regripping” pine tar on his glove and arm and wasn’t caught acople days ago LOL
If everyone is going to use Pine Tar anyway just make it legal and give it to every pitcher. Especially when it is humid, a slippery ball makes less interesting games if nobody can pitch or hit
One of the umpires that ejected Peralta also ejected Joe Niekro in the infamous emery board incident.
