    Thank you so much for making this video, I really like the methods you presented! And I love etymology, as well. (: It‘s such a powerful tool to discover hidden meanings and connections in fictional and ”real“ languages alike. And, as you said, it can give insight into the perspective and motives of the people who coined certain words at a certain point in time.
    Luckily, I was able to find a pretty direct translation of my name (Tim, as a short form of Timothy meaning ”he who honors God“), which is Erutáron (”lofty God“). I really like the sound of it! I‘m guessing the third syllable carries the main stress due the accent, right? Thank you again! ~

    I spent way too long trying to do this. My name means Sea Chief. In Quenya I think my name would be would be Eärcáno but in Sindarin, I've had some trouble. I think it would be Gaeargon or possibly Aeargon as chief isn't really a direct word in Sindarin. The closest word in Caun, which is used in a similar sense sometimes but the suffix version of it appears to be -gon. If I'm incorrect please let me know.

    One little problem with the described Methods is that in Sindarin usually something crazy happens when sticking multiple words together: TakeCelebrimbor as an example. Like the video says it means 'Silver Fist'. Ok, so what then means 'silver' and 'fist'? Perhaps Celebrim + bor? No it's actually _celebrin_ + _paur_. Why isn't it Celebrinpaur then? Because Sindarin has a host of phonetic rules that cover how sounds change in different contexts, in this case soft mutation, nasal assimilation and diphthong reduction in polysyllables are at work. So just sticking words together dose not work.

    • @Artreii

      @@Artreii _Laws and Customs among the Eldar_ (or was it the _Shibboleth,_ I don't remember) disagrees with you on the subject of random names but the problem is a bit more difficult than just that: "Fred" for example is a possible English word, "kltrax" is not an can therefore not serve as a proper name. Likewise Celebrinpaur is not a possible Sindarin word, because _np_ cannot happen and _au_ is only allowed in monosyllabic words, so it's actually not trivial to decide what strings of letters even can serve as a word theoretically regardless of meaning. Unfortunately this problem holds for the majority of names shared in this comment section.

    • @Artreii
      @Artreii  3 роки тому +1

      You know, you don't have to use all of them if they don't fit! If you take the first two, which make up the most popular meaning of the name Meredith, you can create something like "Daerhir" / "Daerhin" / "Beleghir". I think that making the "g"+"r" a single sound would be really fun. Same with "r"+"h" (so the "h" basically softens the previous letter). Just some ideas, remember to make it your own!

      Actually Sindarin compounding doesn't work like that the usual rue is that something crazy happens ( cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/404301540682235923/689989503364104209/unknown.png ), so neither of Daerhir, Daerhin, Beleghir work. I'd offer Daerchir as a male and Daercheryn ('mighty lord/lady')as a female name.

      Ok, let's try it... On elfdict.com, I found "anna" for gift, yeah, and Eru for sure, but, for flower, I found "alma", in Quenya especially. So, just combine those however you want, for example "Almeruanna", or "Erualma", if you want it shorter :D

      Thanks, I just today got an intrest in Quenya.
      I was bored at work since we had nothing to do and somehow the topic turned into dialects and accents.
      We started to talk about which language we'd like to learn and first it was about real languages like Irish but then lo and behold... KLINGON!
      And then youtube started to recommend other stuff about the subject and I remembered that certain Elvish was based in Finnish.
      And now I'm here.
