  • Just south of Pensacola is the Gulf Islands and at the very western end is Fort Pickens. It used to be a military fort used for over 100 years but fortunately we can walk around the sites ourselves now. It has quite some history and amidst amazingly beautiful beaches. The campground is only $26 a night, or $13 a night with an Access Pass, with hot showers so it's well worth it to camp right by the beaches!

Jay, the Florida Trail doesn't actually start in Key West. It starts at Oasis Ranger Station and Visitor Center in Big Cypress National Preserve (north of Everglades NP). - This fort, though much much larger, reminds me of visiting Fort Pulaski National Monument between Savannah and Tybee Island, Georgia. One of the young officers in charge of building Fort Pulaski was Robert E. Lee, who had recently graduated from West Point. During the Civil War, the Union army used two types of new rifled artillery to outdistance the CSA smooth bore cannons and take the fort.

We love Ft Pickens. We used to camp there with friends when our kids were little, and tour the fort. So much history. Ft Barrancus is in Pensacola, and also very interesting to tour. We would explore it, the Naval Air Museum and the lighthouse.

I traveled to Foer Pickens last february. It was a very interesting place. I really enjoyed all the history. Unfortunately, during my visit. I didn't have such great weather since a tropical storm came through. it still was a good time.

It was amazing that we were in the same area and was a huge blessing to get to hang out with my friend. Last time I saw Jay was when he came through PA on his AT thru hike.

Just think how loud those cannons were, and (as far as I know) they didn't have ear protection.
