Love this! My why is to change my feelings of financial helplessness to feeling powerful. The past 2 years have been low spend for me, and as a result, I'll be out of $43,000 of debt by June of this year! Keep posting your progress Leila, we love to see it!
I did a no-buy 2019 and a low-buy 2020. I am doing a no-buy 2021 and feel it should be much easier this time around. My no-buy will allow me to spend on essentials & needs only. No wants, no extras. I do not have "extras" in any category, so the challenge will be how to get creative when things run low or run out. I have no memberships, subscriptions, streaming services, no TV, no shopping online. I do not go into stores unless I NEED something and then I shop from a list only. I am already a minimalist and live very simply.
Great points. Many no-spend months miss the point that it takes time to adjust habits, to check receipts and examine where the problem areas are. I also agree a year is more worthwhile.
I was so good when it came to makeup this year. Only buying replacements. Same for skin care. I started to go a little crazy on hair products so this year I’m making a new rule, no spending money on hair except a haircut at some point. And no clothes.
I am starting a lowspend year. Books only from my shelf or borrowed from different sources, clothing only, if I need to replace something, no home decor or stationary or kitchen-playthings. Some kitchenstuff is fun, but not needed and I easily fall for it.😊 What I will buy next year, is a new sofa, a planned purchase and I am willing to invest in it. Like you, I do no come from a place of scarcity, I just want to hold myself back from things, that I don't need. And need can also be meant as emotionally needed. But I do not need to own every book, that I read, for instance. There are some, in a series, I might buy in 2025 or ask for as birthday presents, but I do not need them next year, there are some left to read before. Apart from the obvious, I want to reduce my spending for food, so there will be less meat and more veggies and those mostly in season. That should keep expenses low. Plus I will reduce sweet drinks and salty snacks. Also, I can eat out, if I am not alone and it should not be every week. My idea in this is: I do not need or really want it, so why get it?
I bake my own bread, I prep my meals every two weeks, I cook what I have in the freezer and I wear the clothes that I already have in my closet, and I stop lending money
My why is to not to bring to our home more things (than needed) and spend all this time and energy decluttering over and over again. Second reason is to see how much money we could save and pay of our house asap.
Great tips Leila! I started a No Spend Year today, and i definitely agree with choosing the right year. I tried it in 2020 and failed at the 3 month mark because i was newly married and got caught up in the excitement of it all. So starting again today for a No Spend 2021.
Haha we are so similar! I don’t have many friends either and I do find it to be a money saver and also this pandemic made a low buy so much easier. I agree with you and I did enjoy it since I am more intentional with my money now and have stopped mindless spending!
Iam going to start a NO SPEND half year in June. My goal with it is to save money, as well as, pay off a bulk of my student loans. If everything's goes well, I will continue my NO SPEND into 2022. I am pretty good at not spending excessively, however, doing this will test my ability to freeze all unnecessary spending. I am very excited.
New subscriber!! Im finally in a place in my life where I can start and succeed at a low buy year. (for 2023) my problem area are clothing sales and going out to eat. My why is being tired of living paycheck to paycheck because I spent too much money. I already started by deleting my card from amazon and unsubscribing from clothing stores.I still plan on going out to eat but I'm limiting it to twice a month. Im super excited about this journey and can't wait to see where it takes me.
My year was definitely a low spend year but l can see by looking back in my results there are things l need to correct myself.on. I always tell my self that l didn't really need what l was looking at.
Just got rid of my Amazon Priime and not renewing for the New Year. Trying to do better and ger Shampoo and Conditioner Bars instead of bottles so buying a few before it renews that will last me months.
My No Buy year in 2024 will include clothes, shoes, jewelry, shampoo (i have an entire basketful of shampoo that i will alternate) and purses. First timer for this exciting challenge!!!
You may have mentioned it but another thing you can do is borrow things you only need a few times from friends and family. Things like tools or kitchen appliances can be borrowed and returned.
Yes for sure! I can't remember if I mentioned it on the video but I borrowed baking materials (muffin tins, cake pan, etc.) from my sister quite often that year!
I think you need to tackle why you feel negative about your future before bringing things like this challenge into you life. Maybe speak to a professional if you need to. Hope you're okay 💚
Thanks for this video. I really want to do a no spend year but hearing about timing has made me realsie its propbaly not a good year for me. Still furnishing my house and doing driving lessons and need to save for a car... probably best to wait... but for now definaly no more books or eating out ect! small changes :)
I am an over shopper. Why buy 1when you can get 4! Its genetic- nature vs nuture??? I love a BOGO. However, I decided I need to deplete my stash of all the things and wear all the VS clearance panties that still have tags!! I moved recently and need to do home improvements and a car, so my low spend has purpose!
I am hoping to move out next year in 2024 so, to save money this year to learn how to budget more and learn how to save more money and have money saved up would be a good idea and I'm doing a no spend year this year for 2023 *UPDATE* Yeah, the no spend year didn't work out I'm gunna try it for 2024 I'm gunna give myself a monthly budget and percentagize my income into different categories like 20% of my income will go to this and 30% of my income will go to that etc. And then whatever is left over will be used for spending
@Personal Finance with Leila - Debt Over It *UPDATE* I am 60 days into my no spend year and I feel so much better and happier than ever and while it was hard at first, I no longer feel the need to spend and since I set boundaries and rules that I wanted to follow, it's made me sooo much more disciplined and less "materialistic" if that makes sense. I'm absolutely loving it and I was *FINALLY* not negative in my bank statement and actually *SAVED* money this month so, I'm very excited its going really well
@@PersonalFinancewithLeila thank you 🙌 I think I will tell my closest family about my nospend year, and for friends I can bake them something or invite them to dinner or something. My kids will get gifts and presents 🙏 I will start my nobuy/lowbuy 10 months now, been a shopoholic as long as I have had own money, I need to break it now and I want to pay of a few thousands in some debts/loans and then build up a good savingsaccount 🤗
New subscriber! Made over 70k last year and not a single dollar to show for it. .. it’s April 2021 and low spend year is something I am going to do!! Debating if I should record this journey going for 36k debt pay off in 1 year!!

Leila begins this conversation talking about how you get to determine what you want to spend money on. If presents are important, determine how much you want to spend and go for it. Ditto for kids' clothes. You get to choose what's important enough for you to spend money on.
I don't really own any. I brought the Aldi planner and then some Happy Planners that weren't the budget one. About two months ago I brought the budget pack (which they never have at Hobby Lobby). Now I'm not sure I'll even use it. I don't have most of the preprinted expenses. I have a lot of free resources that I think I will be using.
I don't see the big deal. I have always been doing this. The only money spent is food and bills. It's important to also cancel any memberships that promote lots of purchases such as Amazon Prime, Costco, or Sam's Club.
I really needed for someone to tell me that no spend is pointless if after given amount of time I'm going to buy smt anyway. For he last 1-2 months I want to buy 10pack of socks but I keep myself from doing it because I don't want to spend that money.
@Gabbie Hennrich i just did it! Feels great to finally fix this issue and although I guess i would've been fine with ones I already own I'll be much better with new ones and it'll save me time in the morning. This taught me to not overthink actual necessities
I decided to stop following sewing channels that are mostly about fabric and pattern hauls . Way to much spending on a weekly basis some of these people do and I was getting anxious just watching them accumulate all that stuff week after week .
Amazing. Have two friends who should do NO SPEND/LOW Spend. I've been no spend/low spend my entire life.......and have more than I need.......and all designer furniture/clothes. easy peasy
I do a lot of “no grocery shopping months” where I only buy like $10 a week in produce and eat everything I already have.
Pantry shopping! Such a good idea, I sometimes try to do that!
That’s a great idea!
This is a great idea. Not only for saving money, but also for reducing food waste!
I so need to do this. We have sooooo much extra food in the pantry!
Smarttttt!!!!!

If you have garden space, grow some moringa plants. They grow fast and those leaves can be used for a meal. It’s a superfood too.
Thank you!
Unfortunately, I have no garden space since I'm in an apartment. One day!
Thank You SO MUCH FOR Doing This Video! I Am SO EXCITED About This Year NO SPEND FOR WANT'S JUST NEEDS! THANK YOU VERY BLESSED WITH WHAT I HAVE!

Question? What about birthday gifts or Christmas gifts? Should I not gift during that year?
It's up to you! I still bought gifts during my low spend years!
