There seems to be a fine line regarding when the audience is deemed ‘smart enough’ to know when some vfx looks unrealistic (hueys sweat drop), versus when they might be too dumb and think something that’s real is not (the octopus color change). That seems problematic, or at the very least, something very difficult to contend with or keep in mind when doing vfx work. Part of me is going, ‘why not just use the octopus color change as a teachable moment to people’ ? Yeah they might think it’s not real at first, but the internet has a way of quickly humbling and informing people, and the crux of that discovery could come from vfx.
I would say it's largely about maintain suspension of disbelief in the moment, for the better viewing experience. It's all well and good if it's "technically accurate" but if it feels wrong and takes you out of the show/movie, it doesn't really matter if you then read how physically accurate it is to real life on the internet a week later. This happens all the time in media - the reality of things is not always what we expect to see when it is portrayed on screen. Roman gladiators did product placement - but Ridley Scott had to cut that aspect from Gladiator because people would think it was anachronistic. Certain actions in CGI might be based on accurate IRL physics, but not have a satisfying visual impact when watching a shot as a moviegoer (I think this actually is touched on in the Twisters episode of CGI React.) Lions, Eagles and Frogs don't sound the way you imagine they do because sound designers use more exaggerated noises in films. Actually, Sound Design in general is a huge one of these, I'd guess 90% of the sound effects you hear (or don't even realise you hear) in a piece of media have been made by something completely different to what they are shown as - because it's important that it be what is best for the film/scene/audience immersion, rather than what is true to life.
Part of it is exposure and getting into uncanny valley discussion. Anything your brain is used to parsing regularly will immediately catch your attention. But octopi are so weird, and people don't know what all they can actually do. There's almost no other animal that can do what they do to that degree. It's kind of like what superspeed actually looks like depending on how it's achieved. Would actual speedsters run like normal person with a regular at a higher rate or would their stride be longer and look more like jumping from foot to foot since sprinting has more drive?
@@AliLightfoot I appreciate this take. I am a sound designer and have struggled with the balance between realism/satisfying design. Like how Jurassic park depicted the Trex roar, vs what scientists estimated it might accurately sound like years later. Totally different. And while I appreciated the interesting accurate results the scientists provided, it just wasn’t as satisfying as that huge roar we heard in the film. I guess I just struggle with that concept in practice generally speaking. Realistic does not always equal satisfying or appropriate for viewing pleasure. I feels slightly unfortunate that you have to make sacrifices like that, but I get it.
It's the same with explosions from a distance, but the sound is instant. People are getting distracted by physically accurate phenomena, thus they don't enjoy the scene.
@@bryanwoods3373 I think the one difference to consider in your statement is that a speedster is completely fictional to some degree. Where as octopi and their behaviors are not. The only reason I mention that key difference is because one side (the speedster) allows for a great deal of interpretation. Sure we have Olympic runners we can reference to some extent for humans running very fast on land. But for example, look at the wide disparity between how they depicted the Flash running in the WB show, versus how it was portrayed in the Snyder films. Vastly different takes, so which was more satisfying or enjoyable? Whereas the octopi exist irl, and in this case, the VFX artist was asked by Kripke to make it very realistic and not anthropomorphic or cartoony. But then yes, you venture into strange uncanny valley territory when you have to depict it having a very human conversation about a romantic relationship. Tbh I think it would’ve been cool to show the octopus changing color or displaying its horns. As irl they do that to hide, intimidate, or attract mates, it could have been a cool realistic element of their actual behavior to blend into the human elements of navigating a romantic relationship and the vulnerabilities there in.
Don't watch The Boys, and don't remember this guest from before...but this was a very cool insight into the creative vs technical side of visual effects. Loved it, enjoyed it.

3:13 this shot couldn’t have held up even half a second more I think. Also tracking that movement for the fight, genius 👏🏻. I did pick up on the face replacement cut point.
Can you credit the clips you briefly cut away to so we know what it's from? Just the name of it in the corner or something so we can go look them up if we're interested. Suggestion for future episodes really.
PETA and their politics aside, I'd be surprised if CGI animals don't become more and more common in film and TV, not just to avoid them coming to any harm but also to get the right performance out of them _and_ to avoid all the legal and logistical hassles dealing with animals entails. If only it could be quite so easy with children.
I mean I agree with your point, but it's funny to think that they're totally on board with replacing animals with CG - but throw a hissy fit about actors & writers being replaced with computers. Because the kind of expensive overbearing bureaucracy that makes working with animals impractical and costly is basically the same exact problems we have now trying to work with Hollywood union labor.

omg his internal despair of "this is it, I'm gonna fail" after reading a script. I've had that many many times as a VFX sup. and then I always manage to pull it off on set. you almost always will see the light on set itself exactly when you've started rolling. it's always uncertainty during preprod and before actually rolling.
Am I the only one that thinks it's insane that you had to blur the sheep ripping another animal apart but you can show multiple people getting ripped apart in Exactly the same way but not have to blur it ?......
I had no idea you had to provide raw footage for vfx artists but it makes complete sense when I think about it. Directors use storyboards and the vfx crew need to make it happen. So of course sometimes they have to outsource to people while giving examples on what to do.
I'm sure I'm in the minority in these comments, but I genuinely can't stand that show. It's so mean-spirited and self-important. That doesn't diminish how excellent the VFX are.
One of those situations where you can appreciate the artistry of the technical teams on something like this, even if the end product is pretty awful. Graphical artists, practical effect artists, stunt performers - all sort of "held hostage" by the final quality of the writing at the end of the day.
Kind of the same feeling I get when I see Weta partner with some hollywood film that is absolute dogwater. The CGI is always on-point to their credit, but entire the rest of the movie is just awful...

The weirdest problem is that they keep having people split in half at the waist, but that's somehow an insta-kill. VFX artists... You can get decapitated and stay conscious for 20 seconds, moving your mouth, eyes, etc. If you get someone cut at the abdomen, they NEED to freak out screaming dying slowly for like a minute at least grasping at things, pulling their own guts back in, and such.

This happens all the time in media - the reality of things is not always what we expect to see when it is portrayed on screen.
Roman gladiators did product placement - but Ridley Scott had to cut that aspect from Gladiator because people would think it was anachronistic.
Certain actions in CGI might be based on accurate IRL physics, but not have a satisfying visual impact when watching a shot as a moviegoer (I think this actually is touched on in the Twisters episode of CGI React.)
Lions, Eagles and Frogs don't sound the way you imagine they do because sound designers use more exaggerated noises in films.
Loved it, enjoyed it.
looks like Sam dressed up as Niko for Halloween
Stephan Fleet has a great soothing voice. I could hear his voice for hours.
This is the perfect thing to watch on my birthday.
this and porn, yes... i agree!
Happy birthday!
Happy birthday! 🎈
Enjoy 🎉
Happy Birthday random stranger! 🎁 😸
Glad to get long episode again!!
@6:10 I just want to give a big ol' f**k you to every instructor that ever gave me crap for "not pushing the pose enough". Not everyone wants to work for Pixar.
---> *_The best "camera jerks with the punch" is the stomp Deacon Frost(Stephan Dorff) does in Blade (1998)._*

Edit: for spelling.
Saturday is for the boys!!
For the boys!
Let's hear it for the booooeyyeyeyeys!
When I saw the sheep scene, it genuinely terrified me, but it was also tinged with humour. I think they nailed it. I mean, flying, man-eating sheep? And you want me to take it seriously? You had your work cut out for you, and it turned out amazing 🤩
I don’t like The Boys but my god this is vfx mastery😊
3:13 this shot couldn’t have held up even half a second more I think. Also tracking that movement for the fight, genius 👏🏻. I did pick up on the face replacement cut point.
Can you credit the clips you briefly cut away to so we know what it's from? Just the name of it in the corner or something so we can go look them up if we're interested. Suggestion for future episodes really.
So, Erin, along with the team, literally took the simplest idea for a clone VFX shot and made it 10x more difficult for perfection. 👏
@@Coconut-219 workforce: "You are legally forced to have 40 writers in your writer's room, and they all have to be paid maximum benefits"
also workforce: "Why are studios canceling projects and making less projects now? Why is everything being outsourced to the UK & Japan?"
@@Coconut-219 the animals dont have to work to earn a living, hope this helps.
@@Deachuu603 yeah because that is the most expensive part of film-making, and not the fact half the budget goes towards promoting the thing, and non-creative roles get a way bigger piece of the pie than anything else... you guys should kiss under the boot you are licking.
Cool episode again, as people mentioned: it's always cool when you can get someone from a show/movie to give insights :D
Loved the bit about the octopus and the real thing looking so fake it doesn't work in CG :D
Please, more animators react. And I suggest taking a look at the Yatch Goldfish fight in the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cartoon.
Tales of the TMNT
Now I want to watch every movie and show this guy worked on. He's just amazing.
So, YT can offer violent movies for free with ads, but the channels that feature milliseconds to seconds OF that type of violence.. also for free with ads... can't without having their money fucked with.
Why my adblock is STAYING ON until youtube decides to enforce their rules fairly & pay their employees.
Everybody's so excited here. I can tell from how much they can't help but to talk over on each other
How does anyone think he is seth rogan? He isnt immediately making me miserable
Just realized I need to start taking notes didn't notice how educational VFX Artists React is.📝💯
Thank you for mentioning "The Boys" in the intro because it's not in the title. That show is a a categorical no-go for me. The brand of gore they use is just too fucking much, man. Hard pass.
for me it's the brand of ""comedy"" ""writing"" that's fell off ever since like season 3...
Loved the season, love the effect breakdowns. 😮
Let's 'ear an Oi for the Bois!
"Season 4 of The Boys is really really cool"
LOL, thanks. I needed that.
Anyone else completely distracted by Wren's constant appearance in the background. It's almost like he was mad he wasn't in this one.
Hey, at least in the description it says it's niko and wren doing the react
@CosilHeiir 😂
omg his internal despair of "this is it, I'm gonna fail" after reading a script.
Unsure if UA-cam will allow it, but doing the Terrifier films would be a good one.
My English suffers, I partially understand your speech when watching. I don't like subtitles, but I'm willing to watch you only with subtitles. Thank you for the interesting and informative videos, I hope that I will have the opportunity to watch them all. Greetings from Moscow and thanks for your work!
Stephan Fleet @ 20.55: 'Erin brought it - no stunt double, no face replacement...'
20:56 Considering the actress, the statement about face replacement is not entirely true.
Great to see Stephan Fleet back on the couch
The weirdest problem is that they keep having people split in half at the waist, but that's somehow an insta-kill. VFX artists... You can get decapitated and stay conscious for 20 seconds, moving your mouth, eyes, etc. If you get someone cut at the abdomen, they NEED to freak out screaming dying slowly for like a minute at least grasping at things, pulling their own guts back in, and such.
The Boys always has such good VFX/CGI. It was always something I noticed while watching it in addition to feeling slightly depressed.
Diabolical
Really love this about stephen “TotallynotSethRogen”, showing the tricks how to do shots on a budget at home and get similar results as million dollar series :D
So you have to blur a cow getting ripped apart but not a human?!
Probably so they can get more subscribers over on their Patreon.
17:26 Going from "I won a PETA Award" to "I made these like meat tubes" is crazy😂😂
The Vought on Ice scene was so brutaly funnyl and unexpected I was dying the first time I saw it.
