This video is 1000000% accurate. I’m almost done with FTEP and it’s the most stress I’ve ever been through in my life. So bad at one point I almost threw in the towel. The tip of taking care of yourself is crucial. FTEP caused so much stress it absolutely killed my appetite everyday and I had stomach problems. For all those going through FTEP, listen to this video and take notes. It gets easier.
Oh wow, that’s bad you went through it to that extent. But you did state “almost” thew in the towel…but you didn’t 💪 Thanks for commenting on the video and sharing your experience.
Thanks for the advice, I'm just under a year at my current department; and considering applying for a few lateral positions in my area. I didn't have a good FTO but I was able to find other officers who offered more beneficial knowledge. If I can share any information regarding FTO phase 1. Be adaptable 2. Don't complain 3. Humble yourself 4. Gain every bit of knowledge possible
Well stated! Excellent points. If I made a video about everything a rookie should do, it would have been the longest video on UA-cam 😁 Your 4 points are spot on. Best fortune to you on the lateral search.
Thanks for this. I was in the Sheriff's Office for 15 years working the jails and court. I was also on the Swat team for 9 years but I had no patrol experience. So far I'm two months into my fto training and my evaluations have been good. I'm just still stressed about the whole thing. I just want to get through this.
Thanks for commenting Jeff🙏 I’m sure your prior experience has helped a bit, but I get it, FTO phase sucks! I was in training for 6 months and it felt like 60 years. You will get through it. 💪 Let me know if you have questions, I’ll do my best to help.
You got this! Take care of yourself, practice what and all that you can, and keep learning…and you’ll do that much better in front of your FTO’s and for the public.
There is, but you don’t need to know it all at once. Day by day. Prove you have some tactical/safety bearing and good communication skills to interact with people on calls. You got this! 💪
Thank you for the advice. I have been extended a few times. I know I can do the job but suffer from stage fright, with my trainer, and worry I will do the wrong thing. I am getting better. My next few days are crucial as they will not extend me again. It took me all of Phase 2 to learn they weren't going to teach me how to do the job, I had to learn through failure. I have never had to learn this way so it has been a challenge. My strenghts are de-escalation, talking to people, report writing. My weaknesses are not feeling "competent." I am confident but not competent because they really are not teaching me, rather expect me to figure it out on my own, fail, and then learn the correct way. As much as I hate to admit it this process does work but the mental toll is the stress is at times numbing.
It's not easy, obviously. I know the pressure is on you now, and it should be because police need to get used to pressure. But ask questions like crazy and even though it will be tough, do all you can to backup others and initiate your own productive police work. Best wishes to you. Positive self-talk can go a long way too.
@@The10CodeMindset thank you. I feel I am doing all of that. It’s the little things I screw up on (that can turn into big things). Its like being pecked to death by a duck, I won’t die, but it’s annoying. I live in a small town so I also think they are trying to create stress. It’s all for my good but geesh! My last FTO wouldn’t answer my questions. Thankfully, my new FTO does.
Ok good thing the new FTO answers the questions. 👍 What I like to do to reduce stress is pray, journal, listen to the UA-cam channel Team Fearless, and exercise. Take care of yourself too during this. I know, it’s a lot. Stay strong. 👍
I retired in ‘97 as a captain/patrol division commander after 30 years. The two assignments I enjoyed the most was being an FTO and later, a detective in our Robbery Squad. It was a great career, no regrets, and I still have lunch each week w/my retired buddies. One of them was my FTO and another my supervisor both in patrol & later in the Investigation Division (detectives).
Outstanding! I’m glad you found it helpful. Stay focused and avoid procrastinating in the academy. Wish you the best and please reach out if you have questions.

I went through the us navy bootcamp so I feel like I'll already know what to do and have experience. Military bootcamp can't be to much different than the police academy. Do u think police bootcamp will be similar to military bootcamp. Now then sailors don't really get to see dead bodies but I've heard stories of ships sinking and sailors drowning.

@@yourEloGone DARN ME! Yes, military experience is definitely a resume builder. I was not a MP but I can tell you that the military experience helped when it came to discipline, attention to detail, and facing challenges throughout the career and on calls. 1 year ago, gosh, really failed on that one. My fault.
