Mama Dip herself died a couple years before covid. It hasn't really been the same since. Covid killed the Carrboro Elmos too, but the 9th street one still going strong
+ Elmo's Diner is still open, and prices are still affordable + Branches Chapel Hill Bookshop is closed + Mama Dip's is still open, but prices have risen. ie hushpuppies were $2.50 are now $7.95. + The Barbeque Joint closed before one of its cooks opened up The Pig in the same building + Caffe Driade is still open, still affordable
That barbeque guy was married to my high school boyfriend's aunt. One year for Thanksgiving, my bf's mom made a brussel sprout recipe to bring, and he said it was a lot like the one he served at his restaurant. When he asked where she got it, she said she got it from Rachael Ray's website. And that's the story of how someone I knew became convinced Rachel Ray had stolen his brussel sprout recipe 😂
This show is iconic, 20 years old and one of the best food travelers shows ever! Rachael Ray's you just gotta love ❤️ her. However, I bet some of these places she went to are probably closed due to the change of time.
@@sollunita Actually mama Dips is closing this month, or next month. The family is selling the land. Every other place is open, though! The Barbeque Joint closed but it was bought by a fan and it looks basically the same and still sells Eastern BBQ. The pickles she got look just like the pickles they sell to this day. Elmo's check, bookstore nope, Mama Dips is just barely still open, baseball park check, BBQ joint is the same in spirit, driade check.
Driade has an even more gorgeous outdoor area now! Although I miss the late-night hours. And I never saw the iced cappuccino on the menu, but they make the best cortado! How fun to see this footage. And now we have Flyleaf instead of Branches, which I could only find a few old articles about.
I tried to compare the cost of what she ate today with what it would cost in 2024 but I didn’t find the grits breakfast on Elmo’s Diner menu. No sign of the Catfish Gumbo on Mama Dip’s menu and The Barbecue Joint is closed so my efforts are all in vein. 😂
Yeah unfortunately this was from twenty years ago but, thankfully three of the four spots are still around cranking out similarly tasty food with not too much of a price hike over the years. The Pig, who took over the spot of The Barbecue Joint is owned by Sam Suchoff, who really cares about uplifting local produce and locally sustainably raised hogs so, they’re definitely worth checking out for solid bbq and veggie options.
@verbal202236 They're not closed yet! You have until August 17! Even then, they're not closing fully, but they will be changing their business model, so they'll still be operating but doing family-style takeout instead.
thanks so much for this!!! these are so awesome to watch. my dad loved rach and he passed on in 09 so it’s awesome to see these old vids. thanks again!!!
I live in Durham and I remember reading a local paper had an article about her visit to Elmo’s (still a fantastic diner!). The article said that after each bite of grits, she spit it out into a small trash can!😮
Can you imagine being able to eat for $40/day? I remember watching this show and thinking that she was spending too much money and how I could eat for $6/day easy. Now you can't eat at McDonald's for under $12/meal let alone eat from the grocery store!!
In 2018 I worked at a PF Chang’s. One of my coworkers was a longtime server who revealed that he had been sending Rachel Ray hate mail for years because he saw this show and she was a bad tipper. He was right.
Mama Dips just closed. Elmo's is still open, even in that location. The Barbeque Joint has been The Pig for like a decade now, but it still sells BBQ and is still top tier. I didn't know it used to be The Barbeque Joint, but I recognized the facade instantly. It still looks the same.
I’ve been trying for days to remember the names of two particular episodes I wonder if you have and I suddenly remembered…Coos Bay Oregon and Mystic Connecticut. Do you have those by any chance?
If you cook cornmeal, you have cornmeal mush. That's not AT ALL grits! Leave it to a Yankee... Grits and polenta are WORLDS away from each other for my tastebuds. I love grits. I wouldn't touch polenta. I've tried several times.
As a native of NC and resident of the Triangle...I'm happy to say Elmo's, Mama Dips, and Caffe Driade still exist(20 years later)!
Mama Dips is closing sadly.
Mama Dip's 💞

Rachel Ray tipping servers ~ $1 😂💀
Early 2000s was wild and I loved it.
The prices 😩
Probably all quadrupled by now 😂
@@vincenzogiufre9037 Not really. A breakfast burrito is $6.95 in the video. It's $8.75 now. 25% more.
@tedfort1698 where would that be?
@@user-cw7pk2wx6i Elmo's. It's in the video.
These shows take me back! I used to love watching Rachel do this and 30 Minute Meals. Thanks so much for unearthing these gems.
I remember watching this episode. I was glad to see my town on there. I can't imagine the prices of these places now.
Hey what's up I love baby Yoda too ❤
I live in sunset beach North Carolina now for 8 years. 30 mins to north Myrtle Beach SC. I'm originally from Connecticut
@@Ladygrogu Isn’t he SO cute? I love him SO much! I have like 24 dolls of him😂💚👽🙌
@@Ladygrogu Oh cool, I’ve been to Myrtle Beach before. It’s very nice. I’m from Chapel Hill.
I forgot all about this show. I used to love it!! Wow this takes me back.

I live in Raleigh. Sadly, Mama Dip’s in Chapel Hill just announced they’re closing in August 2024 after 48 years.
You an original NC or a transplant?
Eating in Durham is more like $40 a meal in 2024
I never ever get tired of watching these episodes. Thank you!
It's making me sad that this was 20 years ago
Right? Like how did that happen??
The prices give it away.
@danmccarthy4700 the PNAC thought we needed another war to pad Wall Street's pockets....
I loved this show. Flash back 20 to 21 years ago.
omg i used to love watching this show growing up and now i live in this area lol
Me too! Like 10 mins fron UNC!
I look forward to this every sunday 0:12
I love these old shows another great episode ❤
When food network was good !
When everything didn't have to be a competition
I terribly miss these shows omg i love Rachel ray ❤

The first two restaurants she shows are still open and popular!

Apparently the show asked them to make a drink that “looked better” for the camera. And thus the “iced cappuccino” was invented.
Amazing!! 😂@@MichaelHarrison37
After all that time, there’s still no short rail system connecting the triangle.

This was one of my favorite shows
The world and the people looked so normal back then! :)
We loved this show!
Thank you for uploading these my favorite show ever
Loved this show back then.
Yay! Thank you so much for uploading! This is my favorite episode of $40 a day I don’t know why this one is oddly sooo comforting for me!
Me too! It feels like home, lol!

Thank you for these uploads!😀 I wish I can do a $40 -a-day challenge like Rachael
You make my Sundays ❤
The intro song is so nostalgic for me.
Instantly took me back! Had to subscribe. Thank you for this ❤
Thank you as always!
thank you love these!
Born and raised in Lumberton, I won,t eat anywhere but “Mama Dip,s! I graduated High School with Jill McCorkel, a well known local author.
Man I bet 04 was prime time to be in the Triangle. Nice , laid back , low key and good food
I live in Durham and I remember reading a local paper had an article about her visit to Elmo’s (still a fantastic diner!). The article said that after each bite of grits, she spit it out into a small trash can!😮
She just walked out of the bookstore with a book !
$40 A Day does not include book, baseball game, or driving around 😂
no duh, the whole premise is $40 a day for the food you eat.
LOVE these episodes!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Please add Great Hotels with Samantha Brown to your show list :)
I don't have that show.
You're doing the Lord's work uploading these

Yeah, $40 a day in 2004 was pretty unimpressive. If she could manage it today that would actually be a brag.
I miss home looking like this.
Her stingy tipping was so embarrassing 😬 She spent more on her Cracker Jacks than she tipped at her meals 🤣
Super funky AND Ultra cool???
Omg. Nostalgia ❤

this was so cool to watch as a native to raleigh haha
Same here! I’ve been to Elmo’s quite a bit too
Cool episode
Prices are tripled now a literal blast from the past
Now, the BBQ plate +sprouts + beer is $25 before tax.
The prices are beautiful! Everything will probably be $15.99 and up today.
Those who can drink coffee at bedtime may be ADD or ADHD. I've known several, including family.
2:11 I guess they don't have burrito wrapping skills in North Carolina.
Rachael: My mom is from Italy
Giada: 👀
How I wish eating on $40 a day can exist today 😢😂
I was graduating high school a few years before this and it was definitely easier to only spend $40 a day feeding yourself
In 06’ I was living off like $3 a day in Los Angeles
I love the show when you are going to upload more videos of Rachel ray

im from durham
If they remade this show today it'd have to be $80 a day 😔
2024 and the line is still always out the door, down the stairs and spilling into the sidewalk at Elmo's.
As a young man I was in love with Rachel…lol
Thanks so much again for posting these! My favorite show!! Do you have New Orleans, Boston, Cleveland, Oregon, California or Las Vegas?
You're welcome. No I don't have any of those episodes. Sorry.
The prices were a bit of a stretch back then. Now, $40 might buy you one meal ;)
Just the Tip alone would be close to $40.00 in California in a 24hr day.
Elmo’s is still a great spot
I love NC your right in the middle of everything (please stop moving here too) y’all are f’king it up
Tax AND tip: $1.64.
i'm surprised that the coffee place has gluten free treats and i'm impressed that the elmo's place has gluten free bread
Remember when everyone thought she was Becky with the good hair
Can anyone tell how the lighting was set up for this video?
she looks like DW from arthur in real life
I’ve been trying for days to remember the names of two particular episodes I wonder if you have and I suddenly remembered…Coos Bay Oregon and Mystic Connecticut. Do you have those by any chance?
No I don't have those.
That might take me out of my budget!
“I think everybody loves brussel sprouts”
Not everybody does dude a lot of people hate them lol
Yeah that was literally the point of the joke 😂
Rachael Ray used to be such a babe
Did anyone hear her moan at 6:23 mark or was that just me ?

She was kinda weird to me😆
It’s odd she mostly eats in Chapel Hill and the only stand-out thing she does in Durham is go to a Bulls game.
Wasn't a whole lot to do in Durham back then
What a terrible tipper...
She turned out to be such a disappointment
