Making Replica Medieval Arrows - Video 8
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 кві 2008
- A step-by-step look at how I make 1/2" medieval-style arrows for use with a heavy poundage English Longbow.
The heads shown in the video are hand forged by Hector Cole and John Marshall. Hector can be Googled on the web or seen in person at major UK re-enactment fayres.
The music is by Ennio Morricone, made famous by the "Spaghetti Westerns" featuring Clint Eastwood.
Sorry, but I do not make arrows for other people.
Spaghetti western! Love it. Medieval gun-slinger!
Your video helped me a great deal years ago. It's what taught me to make arrows. Thank you sir. The music is lovely.
Thank you. I am really pleased to hear my video helped you. I hope you are still enjoying your archery and making arrows.
@@bigbowbrum I haven’t shot my bow in a while. I’ll be creating my arrows next month 👌🏽
The music alone made this video worth watching. Great job good Sir.
Time flies like an arrow. Sometimes when you watch the video a long time ago, you will lament the ruthlessness of time. What we can do is to enjoy the present. I wish you a happy life! The video is very good!
Just finished making my own arrows using this method, best video for medieval arrow making on UA-cam. I really like the idea of drawing out the fletch shape on the tape first, helped immensely. Thank you
What a beautiful medieval arrows! Terrific work 👏❤🎉
The video and the final product are a work of art. Thanks for sharing.
Hello Winn. Nice to hear from you and its great to hear of a father passing down the skills to his son like they did way back in the Middle Ages. I'm glad you enjoyed the video mate and I wish you all the very best with your archery.
That was excellent. The arrow was a work of pure art.
I am learning how to fletch arrows and I desire to learn as you do, your arrows are fantastic and I feel it is a craft that is getting lost to all the high tech stuff. I really appreciate your passion
One of the best compilations on UA-cam. Awesome video and awesome soundtrack. And most importantly, very insightful.
Keep it up!
Your arrows are beautifully designed. Great instructional video!
im from turkey, i love medieval style bow and arrows, very good video thank you.
Thanks Dan. I do like to be different and try new ideas out. Thanks for taking the time to say you like it.
Yes I can imagine how difficult it is but there is nothing more pleasing than making your own bow and then seeing it shoot an arrow into a target. Much more satisfying than simply buying one. I wish her well.
Very, very cool! Thank you so much for making this video! I've been trying to find more traditional approaches to fletching and weaponry in general, with limited success...but here, I have definitely found what I'm looking for! Thanks very much again, Nick - cheers!
Excellent video, you make it look simple. Excellent music too.
Beautiful job bbb.
There's something very 'pure' and primal about a handmade Arrow like this.
I'd be happy to frame one of those and just have it hung on the wall of my Lounge.
great video...one of the best ive seen on arrow making
Excellent. Interesting use of Italian western themes. I almost expected to see Clint Eastwood walk into the shop.
Thanks. Glad you found it interesting, and I may do a bow video in the summer if I have time. No one ever sat down and taught me how to make arrows like this. I just picked up bits of information from many different people, some bowyers and others fletchers, and worked other bits out for myself over the many years I have been shooting. There is nothing quite like making your own equipment, and then taking it out into the countryside and shooting it well.
Great set of videos. Easy to follow and inspiring! Just making 24 Warbow arrows for my 145 pounder at the moment. Half inch Ash shafts. Cheers and happy shooting.
Great Video.....that Arrow is a thing of beauty...thank you for sharing...
Man you made an awesome video. Masterful work. Made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
love the method of how you do this, very simple. i made a set exactly like your about a year ago. my only problem is i had to use glue on the fletching, i could not get the tape to stick for the life of me
love your work and that you keep the true spirt of traditional archery alive
Congratulations! You just advanced a Fletching level!
Very cool arrows, really professionally made !
this is absolutely awesome....i have seen this video a couple of time now...but i must admit...it just grows on me more and more.....would love to see you put one together for the construction of an english longbow!!!!
Great video, sweet music, love the finished arrow.
I'm really pleased that you found the video useful! :) I don't foot my arrows as I try to shoot only arrows that are historically correct but doing so does prolong their life and looks very nice too.
thank you sir for such pleasant videos.u r an amazing artist. respect from Mauritius.
Wow, that looks pretty detailed, great work!
Hi Bigbowbrum many thanks for your reply. I watched your video on horn inserts and see how to use file blades taped together, great idea! Many thanks for the tips and the videos.
Very cool vid. And awesome addition of Morricone's Fist Full of Dollars score.
Glad I could help. I hope your new arrows fly well. There's nothing better than shooting your own kit.
Thanks for the feedback. I buy the shafts already cylindrical, so all I need do is create the taper. I use a scraper to scrape wood off the shaft, turning it after each scrape until I have a rough taper from 1/2" at the head to 3/8" at the nock. I then use sandpaper to make it smooth. In medieval times rectangular shafts were laid down in a V shaped groove. One square edge would be shaved off then the shaft rotated in the groove, repeating until it was roughly cylindrical, then sanded smooth.
Very interesting how you have made it!
Thank you for posting this.
Greetings from Germany!
And this folks is why hand made arrows cost so much - each one is a real labour of love! But so satisfying to make your own arrows.
Great idea with the masking tape for cutting fletching, I'll have to use that next time! Now to find an Aussie supplier of linen thread.....
Thanks for another great video.
This is all so amazing, they are a work of art!
Magnifico video.
Muestra la mas bella artesania pura.
Gracias por compartir esto con nosotros.
Awesome work and great choice of ennio morricone music
Great Video. Well done! I felt entertained and informed. Thanks!
nice work, a master of his craft
Your longbow is ... simply beautiful!!! Greetings from Hungary
Great video&beautiful arrows. Thanks.
love the work you do, you have great skill
absolutely brilliant, love your work bro!
This vid is 16 years ago. My goodness how time has passed
It certainly has James. A lot has changed too, though I am still shooting bows, even if I don't get the time to make videos these days. Thanks for still watching though mate. I really appreciate it.
Love the video. I remember holding a bow in school many moons ago. I imagine there must be something very tactile and preasurable about drawing the bow and feeling something you have made let fly. Thoouroughly excellent choice of music to.
Amazing! I am writing down the list of things you used. I am starting to make my own arrows. Thanks for the video! It's very helpful.
ps. I use Ennios western music as my alarm ringtone, so when I first watched the video it made me felt right at bed.
Beautiful pieces of art.. thank you sir.
Well let's just say you have the right idea and all the other 19yr olds out there are missing out on a great hobby and some very useful life skills! These techniques work great on all wooden arrows. The only thing I would change is the diameter of the shaft if using them with a lighter poundage bow. You might also prefer smaller fletchings to reduce the amount of drag.
This is amazing, well done!
Made my first three arrows tonight using this video as a basis for my work. I am doing everything by hand (have no power tools at the moment) and I think my taper for my nock may be off and I may have went overboard with the glue. Oh well, I'll see what happens when I shoot them tomorrow. Thanks for the upload, it was a major help.
Glad to hear the video was useful.
This is a work of art and would happily pay alot for these arrows.
love the choice of music
We all have to start somewhere mate, but hopefully your interest in the bow will continue and when you are old enough you can make some of these! Good luck with the stick arrows. I remember back when I was your age, making bows and arrows out of sticks and string at my grandfather's house in the country. Good times.
I don't know how many years ago it was that I first watched this and was amazed... but, it still gets me. Beautiful work sir, just beautiful. Each is its own piece of art. Do you have any comments on the bow use? Particularly whether or not the medieval commanders used the falling "storm" of arrows? I've heard that tapestries etc show only close, face to face with bows aimed down and in the face. Which gives more oomph to the possible penetration of armor or at least damage from repeated blows from arrows.
Hello Jane. Thank you for your kind words. The bow was a very versatile weapon and its use would depend on the circumstances. In large, open field battles, archers would shoot massed volleys up into the air, the arrows falling on the enemy, possibly up to 250 yards distant. As armies closed so the archers would lower their trajectory until they would shoot flat at close range. During siege warfare or naval engagements, distances would lessen and archers would modify the elevation of their shots accordingly, however it is certainly true that the massed volleys at battles such as Crecy (1346) and Agincourt (1415) were the ones that were the most deadly and which made the longbow famous. The bow was better suited to long range warfare as the archer was vulnerable at close range, however you are correct by saying a close range shot would be more powerful. I hope this helps. Best wishes, Nick.
@@bigbowbrum Ahhhhh, information. poifect. ty muchly sir.
Me too.
Ennio Morricone: Excelente music choice
Nice vid, and good music too. loved it. Thx

very beautiful sir! job well done! awesome video!
Great video and music. Thanks.
this is very nice work! i enjoyed it a lot!
the trick with the tape helped a lot!
thanks
You really have inspired me to attempt this. Thankyou.
Very nice video, very nice arrow!
Hi Stickbow. Good to hear from you. Our arrow nocks are straight and fairly shallow as archaeological remains seem to show this design as the one used in medieval times..Our arrows do not lock on to the string at all, but are held on by our fingers. They would fall off if not gripped gently.
I am fascinated. Friend just gave me Bernard Cornwell's Azincourt, so had to check out fletching (and of course longbows). Lovely video man. Beautiful arrows.
badass work man thank you so much for this video, i have 12 ash shafts and im gonna try to make them the way you did, thanks again -JOE
Perfect arrow for Longbow! Thank you for this video.
love the music! nice job
Very cool--thanks for posting. Cheers from Canada.
Arrows: Medieval Ages, Music: Wild Western Ages, Techniques: Industrial Age, Result: Awesome Age.. :D
I like the music,it's perfect.
Beautiful work sir.
I LOVE YOU VIDEO'S MAN.
YOU HAVE REAL CRAFT SKILLS
AND YES RIGHT KIND OF MUSIC TO GO WITH RIGHT KIND OF JOB
KEEP IT UP AND HOPE YOU LIVE LONG ;)
Ha ha, you are the first person who I have made fall asleep watching one of my videos! Great! Hope yo make it all the way through one day! :)
It's beautiful. It's pretty much art.
Glad you liked the video Jack. If you ever have any questions please feel free to ask. All the best, Nick.
AMAZING arrows I have never seen homemade arrows like that before they are amazing I love them I would buy some off you if I could...
I've been into bows for a wile now. J.R.R. Tolkien and John Flanagan get a huge peice of credit!
i fav this vid ... very interesting ...nice music 2 ... keepem comeing .
Glad you enjoyed the music. I realise that it's not very in keeping with the medieval theme, but I like to do things differently and if I put lute music on every one of my videos then I feel people would soon get bored, or I would at least! :) I grew up on watching the Spaghetti Westerns with my dad so I have very fond memories of them.
Thanks Arczok. It is nice to hear from people who love longbows from Germany. By the way, the info you were asking about is in the video info panel in the top right of the page, so you only had to read 4 lines of text rather than 143 comments! ha ha. No problem mate. Good luck in finding some heads. Best wishes - Nick/Big.
Awesome. Thanks for this video!
I can't thank you enough for your detailed responses and how-to videos! It's a shame though that I'm the only one in my area who shoots traditional. At my range, it's mostly compound shooters and olympic recurves who tend to look down on traditionals.
@AIR112able Thanks! It's always nice to hear from people who enjoy our videos. Best wishes to you.
nice video, nice music, good work.
Yes mate, happy to take a look at your photos.
Thank you for doing this Video, really nice done. Best Regards,
Josef
That was great... a job well done...
excellent video- thanks for sharing!
great job i love those arrows and it helped me out. btw fleching tape is the greatest so much easier than glue.
I'm ready bro. Glad you enjoy the videos.
