Austerity was supposed to bring down the debt that Gordon Brown accrued by saving the banking system, which he absolutely had to do, otherwise we would have become limited to only 2 or 3 banks, and millions of people would have lost their entire savings, and would have had to scramble around to change their entire finances to a new bank, and that's assuming that a bank that survived would have been ready, willing, and able, to accept millions of new account holders. The UK's problems actually go back centuries. It's a hugely complex issue but at the heart of it is the UK's archaic institutions and, more importantly, the corresponding archaic backward mindset of its government and many of its people. The truth is that the UK never had the kind of upheaval and revolution that its peers and rivals did. It was never forced to confront itself and does not have the honesty or bravery to do so now. And so it muddles along with a medieval establishment and an approach to its economy that is Georgian at best. It is not so much inspired by its past as enslaved by it.
People had all the facts regarding Brexit at the time of the referendum, but they simply chose to ignore them,or were told that the experts were all wrong
This is the reality of 14 year of Tory governments: "Poland’s GDP per person could overtake the UK’s by the end of the decade. Slovenia could overtake the UK as early as next year." You have to start somewhere like after WW2. Tories are NOT the ones to fix it. 14 years of being ground down with them blaming everything but themselves for it.
@janetmalcolm6191 Weirdly enough the end of WW2 was where it all started to go wrong. The UK had a golden opportunity to become Europe's leading power and it failed miserably. By the early 50s it was overtaken by Germany, a country that had been in utter ruins a few years previously.
@janetmalcolm6191 I half agree with you but the UK in the late 70s was in dire straits too, possibly even more so. Governments of all hues have tried all sorts of tricks to disguise the underlying rot but they can only kick the can down the road for so long. I believe we are very close to the end of that road.
Why just because you get old doesn't mean you are useless, many people work past their retirement age in both paid and unpaid work, we will always have the sick both young and old and as a nation we should look after them, or would you rather tell older members of your family there time is up at 75, then someone will say that's too old let's make it 70 etc, etc.

We need at least 2 or 3 more Council tax bands but it will never happen because the rich will not pay more tax than the poor & middle class.
My property was practically worthless 25 years ago but now it's worth a relative fortune because it's in the lake District I work in construction and agriculture so don't earn a lot why should I be penalised because rich people pushing up property prices buying holiday homes ?
Margaret Thatcher started that. Messed it up so bad it was part of the reason it brought her down! A king should pay the same as a pauper. Tory ideas!!
We all get the same services it costs no more money to empty a bin from a big house than a small one!
@@BadlydrawnBenBecause you own a massively expensive asset. You have vast wealth there, mate.
This is absolutely right, and important, and it should be one of the main things that is discussed during this election.
Billionaires. That’s why everyone else’s lives are so much harder than they need to be. We need to sort out billionaires.
I'll be spending a few weeks in England soon .
My english partner and I we live in France .
We are very worried when in England ....what if we need to see a doctor or a dentist while we are there?
It can be done in less than 24 hours in France ...! Operations are carried out when you need them ..
My partner would not want to live in England again ! And yet,he loved his country very much ...very very sad !
Simples money grabbing tories. They want the roads empty for there big V8s but no others.
I had to get up & apologise for marking a brand new 60 grand Lexus that i accidently walked in front of yesterday. He accepted my excuse of " we're all in it together" - us brits eh! Blitz spirit an all tha eh!
It’s literally a horrible place to live! Unfortunately Tories have completely broken the country.
Vote out to help out. Vote Labour after 14 years of bull 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
The Past Will Always Be The Reflection In The Future. The Present For Now, Being Buried the 7:20 Workers In Poverty. Which Future!!
There doesn't need to be more taxation to improve lives / tax revenues at curent levels.
Sort the price of everything out. Stop energy being so ridiculously expensive to stop cost-push inflation.
Sort the ridiculous property prices out by reforming planning laws, allowing way more houses to be built and have a national strategy for it (targeted in particularly bad areas for affordable housing).
The majority of most people's Incomes are being thrown into just paying for essentials. That needs to stop.
And close the tax avoidance loopholes, open only to the rich.
That's economic illiteracy I'm afraid. There are no simple fixes without more revenue at this point, not least due to the tremendous inefficiencies accumulated through underspend.
Thank you..
14 years of Tory government.
Well said Sir Michael in pointing out that “we” don’t want to pay for public services. We are a nation of hypocrites who complain about the state of everything but then complain about paying more tax. Where on earth do people think the money comes from to pay for all these things? There is no such things as “government money”. It’s all OUR money. The state of the country is OUR fault! We elected the Tory government, we elected them knowing that they had no interest in supporting the less well off, the sick, the disabled. It’s OUR fault!
Not everybody did!! Many knew it was the wrong thing last time but people wanted Brexit but forgot about the Party in charge who was supposed to get on with it. Despite their policies being bad. How sad was that?
An excellent analysis, thank you!
There were some of us who warned about this as early as 2010. Andrew Marr however had a prime time TV show and gleefully asked politicians of all colours how much more they could cut the size of the state. Yet here he is, rewarded with various well paid presenter’s roles
Britain is miserable and poor because it chose to be.
A heathy nation is weathly and productive nation.
The optimist in me says that more and more people know what's wrong with this country and why it happened. The pessimist says that even then the rich and middle classes won't be willing to pay more tax. We're stuck in a self-defeating loop. The current stealth tax rises feel unlikely to do anything but patch the holes until the next crisis.
Tories. Tories are always the reason. Strangely the super-rich billionairre 0.001% are doing fantastically. Richer and happier than ever.
Money goes to money. The rich get richer off the backs of the poor in hard times. Fact.
Douglas Carswell's assessment of the reasons for the failure of the Conservative Party is wonderful. Vote Tory, get Social Democrats.
How much his he raking in being a sir that one thing we should get rid
“…the sicker the community, the more money we’re going to take from them” That _is_ pretty much what $nake said during his bid for the PM gig.
What Sir MIchael doesn't talk about is sovereignty. So when you have that, health becomes unimportant.
Yet some muppets will still vote tory.
LBC is the new BBC..
In what sense?
@@jamescollins6085BBC used to state factual news. Now it is in the Tories pocket. Lets get true news when reported. Tell it like it is. NO BIAS.
This is the reality of 14 year of Tory governments: "Poland’s GDP per person could overtake the UK’s by the end of the decade. Slovenia could overtake the UK as early as next year." Imagine that: "Great" Britain will be overtaken by Slovenia next year. Britain is now a poor country with a few very rich people.
No it is very poor with quite a few rich people. The money people pay go where exactly?? To do what?? It's not going on services we really need.
@@janetmalcolm6191that's because the rich don't need them, they go private so why invest in services your voters don't use
@@lizdocherty3067Well same with social housing according to Cameron. Such a selfish attitude that stinks.
Have Money for War but No Money for public services.
But the richest got even richer ???
No government is going to do enough to fix this country. It's utterly broken
You have to start somewhere like after WW2.
@@jannenreuben7398You need to fast forward to more modern times. The rot set in about 10 years ago. The visable rot that is.
@janetmalcolm6191 I half agree with you but the UK in the late 70s was in dire straits too, possibly even more so. Governments of all hues have tried all sorts of tricks to disguise the underlying rot but they can only kick the can down the road for so long. I believe we are very close to the end of that road.
2023. Foreign Direct investment in the UK, +6%. Across the EU as a whole, -4%. Says it all. Hooray for Brexit Britain.
Scotland has taken 300,000 children out of poverty. Sir Kid Starver is keeping the two child benefit cap.
There must be a plateau for life expectancy!
Reall would like to see Marmot reset Worldwide Clinical Guidelines so that 70+ pay 100% for hospital care or hospitals stop giving them elective surgeries. We ne edd a conversation about who fill pathology, radiology, cancer and GP surgeries on NHS or free under Private Health Insurance to the detriment of working age people.
She's quite amazing women, considering her political opponents are Public School and Oxbridge educated skilled in rhetoric.
Mark Twain: "It's easier to fool people than convince them they've been fooled." Brexiter types will continue to refuse to make the connection, such is their fear of being seen as fools. So it's in everyone's interest not to make fools of them but tell them they've been conned. Which is what's happened.

That's an ad-hominem fallacy. You should consider the strength of the argument rather than the status of the person making it.

I hate Brexit but guess what ? The voters of the UK voted for it. Now tell me again is a political party is the UKs problem or it the people of the UK that are the problem ?
It's mostly the Murdock media that convinced people for decades the EU was evil.. dont patronise the people by saying there's something wrong with them.
The Govt we have can't govern. THAT is the problem. Ever heard of if you get handed lemons make lemonade? Not Tory thinking!!
And have the Brexit advocates apologised yet?
Never will they have their sovereignty to dream on
Brexit was a symptom of Britain's decline, not the cause of it.
