  • Trying @Stakes as an alternative to (several of our) MSR Groundhogs and Groundhog Minis.
MSR Groundhogs and Groundhog Minis have been our go-to tent stakes for our trekking pole shelter (Durston Gear X-Mid) for awhile. They are easy to buy, can take a beating, and have worked for us in almost all terrain on the Appalachian Trail. We typically carry 12 (4 regular and 8 mini) for a total weight of 4.7 ounces.
We wanted to see if we could swap out several of our Groundhogs for @Stakes and shave some ounces off our stake kit. We tried swapping 6 Groundhog Minis for 4x 6" and 2x 3" @Stakes for a new total weight of 3.7 ounces including the 6 Groundhogs and 6 @Stakes.
After a week on the Appalachain Trail, we've settled on keeping 4 full-sized Groundhogs for the shelter corners, where the guylines are under more tension, and 2 Minis just in case the ground is uncooperative. We'll bring 4x 6" @Stakes since they worked well in most terrain, and 2x 3" @Stakes since they were super handy to quickly pull out side panels when rocks and roots were shallow.

Every single MSR groundstake I've had the top part where the notches are cut in have bent. In my personal opinion the MSR's are terrible stakes for anything but soft ground.
