It’s great that the “Top of The Pops” footage featuring The Beatles partially exists thanks to “Doctor Who” although unfortunately in my part of the world I can’t see it.
Beatles music also featured in final episode of The Prisoner.
I guess at the time the BBC thought the Beatles were just a fad and didn't realise The Beatles would still be popular 50 odd years later.
@@joelamont8585 The Anderson sci fi series called UFO, features The Beatles Get Back song in one of the episodes.
@@brianinglis3805 Well the storyline has it that they are remembered 100's of years later, so at least the writer understood that The Fab4's legacy would last.
Get a secondhand VHS copy of "The Chase / Remembrance of the Daleks" (it was a 2-tape set) and you can see it. They didn't start cutting the Beatles sequence from non-UK releases of the Doctor Who story until DVD.
As a HUGE fan of the original, part of me wishes the remake was made just to compare the two versions, but I'm also glad it was cancelled. Yellow Submarine was such a product of its time--in the late '60s everyone still believed peace, love, and rock and roll would save the world. Don't know how relevant that message would be nowadays.
I agree
Don't think about it too much Tris, (cool name BTW) because to give it relevance the Blue Meanies would prevail, and a new character, "Hope" would end up in the ICU. What happens to The Beatles is what actually happened, and when you left the theater and looked at the state of the world, you'd realize that the movie was a musical comedy.
The people back then who all gathered for change. Later changed their clothes and took showers and returned to normal people. Barely no progress was made..
@@charlesmitchell487 Thanks, I picked it myself! And yes, it was partially inspired by Divergent, but I was never a huge fan of the series or anything. I just loved the name.
I agree. Its a remake that does not need to be made. The magic of the movie comes from the time it was from....some clinical digital remake is NOT required!!
Fascinating! I wonder: would this project's fate have been different if it had fallen into the hands of a studio like Pixar instead? Given how far digital animation has advanced in the last 10 years, maybe this project will resurface yet again...
I think they would have been better off creating a whole new Beatles fantasy, featuring songs not used in the original Yellow Submarine and a completely different story.
I hope
Or Universal Studios as a part of the Lego movie franchise
@@krizcapricornstar9131 If they want to do a remake/reboot, Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band the movie or Magical Mystery Tour would be far better choices. But, I think MMT is probably better off being left alone, as I think the Beatles had more involvement in that one.
@@SmallSpoonBrigade I agree. MMT could be done by incorporating old footage but probably best left alone. As it's animation the possibilities are endless but it could also be a disaster. I did not like the examples of animation displayed on the recent failed submarine attempt which proves it would be hard to satisfy everyone.
The most significant thing about the 1968 production of Yellow Submarine, I think, is the style of the art, which is peculiar and very specific to a narrow timeframe. The movie is an aesthetic time-capsule of 1968 hippiedom, right at the cusp of everything beginning to turn ugly.
Thank the gods of good taste that this never happened.
If the original woulda had a sequel that woulda been cool but a remake... Singin' a different tune.
It's so sad that so much media from the past is lost due to studios not realizing that someday people might want to go back and watch it. Same thing happen with one of the cartoons from my childhood Turbo Teen. It's virtually impossible to find all episodes of the show because no one thought to catalog and digitize the show.
then you people have to do something about it!
The "Maximo" is here. Thanks for the video; and the impact our research got on the Lost Media. As the project goes; i'm taking a break; but despite that; the research it's one of my to do things.
I remember looking forward to seeing the remake of Yellow Submarine back in 2010 after I saw the original.
Glad to see you covered our project
I appreciate your hard work, this movie has rarely been explored out of all the cancelled stuff to be talked about SO MUCH APPRECIATED
Oh sure. They've talked about the Beatles to death now. Now we've heard every damn thing there is to say about them. I'm going to bed.
I remember here in the States, they kept the clip in when they kept the scene in when public television first ran the Hartnell episodes in the ‘80s. On streaming, though, it’s cut.
I love the Yellow Submarine film. Even now some of the animation is brilliant, there's some really funny pieces in it, you've got classic Beatles songs throughout and the four Beatles make an appearance at the end. I don't think it's the kind of film you can remake. It's very much a late 1960s psychedelic animated movie with brilliant song's.
All Together Now.
I’m from England and the Beatles is my second favourite band aside from Queen, but I would have loved to see this film.I find it such a shame we didn’t get it
I love ''yellow submarine'' there will never be anything quite like it. A wonderful landscape shaped by pure artistic imagination and talent.
I got to audition for this remake in November 2009, for Burrows Boland Casting, oddly East Coast auditions held at my friend Charles Rosenay's Beatles Festival in CT. Charles had contacted me, as I'd done a solo show smoothly morphing between an impression of each Beatle ("johnpaulgeorgeringo", Outstanding Solo Show in The 2008 NY Int'l. Fringe Festival). It was an open casting call, and I ran into a bunch of Beatle tribute act friends there from all over the globe, (one such pal was in fact cast as some form of John Lennon--voice, I think). We all met up afterwards for lunch, and later on drinks where the casting folks hung out with us, regaling us with stories about Hollywood casting, Johnny Depp & Tom Cruise, and such. What great memories!
THE WEIRDNESS OF THE STYLE WORKS SO WELL WITH ITTT
Exactly!
The original, especially restored, is simply breathtaking and one of the best animated films of all time. A remake of that would be like... the remake of Carpenter’s The Thing. Not as good, and why bother? The original was perfect.
Ironically, that test footage looks kinda like the 'Rock Band' avatars! LOL! =)
I saw the storyboard animation for the Blue Meanies opening attack on Pepperland and the storyboards for Eleanor Rigby song sequence which are similar to the original film except the glove following Ringo happens during the song. They used to be on UA-cam unless they got taken down. I question how much might have shifted to Rockband animation.
I know this film may just seem like a strange niche to some people, nightmare fuel to others, but to me it means everything. I’m an early-2000s kid born to 60s-raised parents. Growing up there were a small handful of movies that I asked to be played over and over and over again, 10-20 times a year, no matter the time of year. These included Monster House, Polar Express, the whole Image Movers armada, but my all-time favourite was always Yellow Submarine. In the end, this film feels like it was meant to be made for me, it would have blown my mind to Venus if it came out when it was meant to. Wherever the future leads, I will do everything in my power, however much power I may have, to make this project resurface. It’s my duty.
I worked at ImageMovers Digital. Sorry we couldn't make this movie for you. I think it would have been mind-blowing.
There are quite a few unseen Beatles broadcasts in the hands of private collectors. Even in Beatle collecting circles, these collectors are the elite and only share or show in secret exclusive circles! #SadButTrue I'm so glad Yellow Sub remake is cancelled. You can't redo a masterpiece!
And when these collectors die, theirs may not understand what they have inherited
Totally agree. Any remake of Yellow Submarine would just be an insult to Beatles fan's.
It's a film of it's time with brilliant song's in it.
@@kevanbrown7620 Honestly, if they want to make a new Beatles movie, using other bits of their catalog would be more appropriate, or just remake Sergeant Pepper's. It's one of the worst movies ever, and it's unlikely that anybody has particularly fond memories of it on the basis of the movie itself.
I'm curious to see what the script is like actually, I would love to see what the film could have been like as a whole.
Possible update video if that ever gets uncovered 😉
@@ScribblestoScreen K then. Peace and love!
I'm going to be the one to say it. I'm absolutely ecstatic this never happened. This was a terrible idea on every level, especially using Zemeckis's horrid Mo-Cap system that only ever looked good on Monster House. The Blue Meanies are absolutely disturbing looking, dressed like S&M fetishists. Not everything needs to be remade, especially something that was very much a product of the 60's and is an excellent time capsule of Beatlemania before the band ended. It's one of the greatest animated movies of all time, if only for the amazing acid trip animation, and a CGI Mo-Cap version, original story or otherwise, would lack the same punch in every way.
Still better than Mars needs moms tho
You took the words right out of me mouth.
Absolutely! I had actually forgotten that the idea had even come up.
Tintin made it right for the most part. I think if there's a movie that would have pulled off and maybe even benefited from mo cap is YS, if only for its psychedelic dreamlike vibe. But yeah some of the interpretations of the original designs look uncanny as hell, and not in a good way at all
@@celestee2264 Tin Tin was a masterclass in how MoCap should be done. Was it perfect? Not as such, but the characters looked more like that animation/human figure hybrid and a lot less corpse-y than Polar Express did. Also helped that the movie was far better written at any rate. I wish they'd make that sequel that Peter Jackson promised while he got roped into those Hobbit movies.
This is one of the few times I wish a remake was made. The original is great, but this looks like it had some really 3d psychedelic looks.
This video was decent and had more depth than most YS Remake documentaries but I feel it's still missing some important details about the search which were seemingly glossed over. While Kitsu is instrumental to the process of the search, and founding YS3D, he didn't actually find any footage. Lost Media Monsters was mentioned in the video but they practically did nothing besides publicizing.
Crediting all the folks who found the concept art would take too long but I'll credit those who found the footage.
8:25 Blue Meanie test #1, found by cartoondude413 in 2013.
5:28 George Harrison motion capture test, found by mynameiskhannie in 2014.
9:09 Beatles Sgt Pepper Reprise test footage, found by Maximo in April 2021.
8:23 Blue Meanie test #2, found by naturalkatsap in April 2021.
8:58 Yellow Submarine storyboards, found by Mr. Kite in April 2021.
8:07 "There's only one way to go out" reels. Both found by Maximo, in April 2021 and June 2021 respectively.
thanks yo
Thank you
I adore the original. Remaking it would have been like turning the Mona Lisa into a 3D uncanny valley!
It would've been nice to see on some level, but I'm very glad that Yellow Submarine is still one of the few movies that has been reduced to lackluster CGI. There's a strange stigma that a lot of Hollywood feels towards 2D animation. It feels like they'd rather keep doubling down on CGI to push this "futuristic" type feel, but it rarely ever looks half as good as 2D animation & it's always at least double the time and cost of CGI.
Also that CG Jermey is genuinely horrifying lmao
Tell them to go rewatch Fantasia. 2D 80 years ago.
If Disney and Apple Corps have success with “The Beatles’ Get Back,” is there any chance of trying again with “Yellow Submarine?”
Why would you? Just watch the original
Maybe, but not with this ugly technology.
@@treyjohnson4035 Yeah, the more recent remastered versions are more than good enough. I'm not even sure you could make that movie again without neutering the hell out of it. There were just so many references and political innuendo going on in it. Much of which would rankle modern studios, which is probably a factor in why they wanted to remake it, that and the Beatles remaining popular.
Possibly.. you'd need to go the Sea of Time taking cameras to record the YS sessions with you though!
I love your videos, I can't wait for your next one...
Even if the movie was bad, it would have been a delight to see, especially since children who had no idea who they were could have been introduced to the Beatles. Either way, I'm a bit disappointed it never happened.
The original was pretty kid friendly, as virtually none of the political commentary would really be comprehensible to a kid, but the colors and animations would. I saw it when I was a relatively young kid on TV and the memory of it stuck with me long enough to track down and watch again when I was in my 30s.
I would have liked to see that remake, but it's too bad it got canceled due to the box office failure of Mars Needs Moms! (But hey! we're all sticking with the original classic!)
I'm personally glad that they didn't, the new version would have been neutered in a way that the original wasn't. Plus, by 2012 half the Beatles had already died, meaning that if they opted to do a cameo near the end like the original, that wouldn't really have been the same.
Having rewatched the movie as an adult, it was rather shocking just how much innuendo and referncing was going on that I had no idea about. Plus, more recent editions have been remastered to bring back the vibrant colors that were always supposed to be there. The version I saw on TV as a kid had rather muted colors.
Agreed.
I think it'd be interesting to see Yellow Submarine done in the style of something like Spider-Verse and other stylized animated films we have now. Some of that abstract background art looks really nice.
Or a Lego movie
I would much rather the effort be put into making the original as restored as possible. Art does not need to be remade.
I wouldn’t have minded seeing the remake. But the Blue Meanies look terrifying.
Everyone here is taking about how they’re happy the film was never made, but I would’ve honestly wanted it to happen. I haven’t seen the original, but I’ll make sure to, but it still would’ve been awesome to have an amazing CGI director make a cartoon-live action film of our favorite band based on one of the best songs they’ve written for a movie. I’ll take anything I can get, better a film like this than most other crap films
It looked so great the film footage we got but they really should revive it
I would love for this to be reopened.
It's a blessing that this remake never happened. The original animated movie is perfect as it is, blending surrealistic animation with the terrific Beatles tunes that were included. So many remade movies are completely unnecessary and this would've been another on that list.
Fun fact: the lady in Doctor Who at 0:19 is in 'Taptu - Freaky Old Lady' if you can be arsed to search that on UA-cam. Worth it...
Honestly I would have loved to see this, since I really love the 65' version.
It came out in 1968.
@@markzappasodi shit
I'm sure that if a new version of the film would be made it would be a huge success.
"The only way to get it is to actually contact somebody who has it" . . . That may be the single most profound statement I've ever heard. Thank you, Mr. Obvious.
He's not wrong 😝 his first time being interviewed so cut him a bit of slack
As a BIG Beatles fan, a part of me would say, "BLASPHEMY!!!!!!!!" But now that I've seen scraps of what could have been the final project, a part of me wants to see this new 3D version in full.
I kind of wish they would have made it, I've been a fan of the original for a while it would have been cool to see a 3D one
I need this remake in my life
Honestly, im extremely glad that i have a DVD copy of the movie, feels like a piece of history.
I have two Lost Media grails: Some Godzilla bumpers done by John Belushi for an NBC broadcast, and a Brady Bunch special done to promote Saturday morning cartoons. I've seen almost no progress, but I can't say the dial hasn't moved at all. Something like this, much more recent, stands every chance of seeing a treasure trove unearthed - probably one that is mislabeled and forgotten. Keep trying.
Yellow Submarine is one of my favorite films of all time, and I think that the beautiful 2d psychedelic style animation is some of its charm, and taking it away would have ruined it. Also the uncanny valley Beatles are scary
it’s very peculiar that John Lennon is always depicted as being taller than Paul McCartney
Thank goodness
Great video 👍😊 love the Beatles
I was so dam excited for this movie, was heavily into Beatles lore in 2011 and then heard they were making this I followed every step until zeneckis ruined it with Mars needs moms
Well, it was more like Simon Wells ruined it with Mars Needs Moms because MNM wasn't directed by Zemeckis. But actually it was the box office performance of A Christmas Carol that sealed ImageMovers Digital's fate. Disney decided to close the studio long before Mars Needs Moms was finished.
They should redo it, but make it more cartoony
I wish it was made. It 1000% would've been a much better last hurray for ImageMovers than Mars Needs Moms.
I was at IMD, and I 1000% agree! I wish they had let us make it.
solution: get paul to sign the liscencing for these clips,PLEASE! LOL
If I was a kid and I saw cgi Jeremy I'd run out of the theater screaming
the beatles and doctor who... most british thing ever on tv
Yes.
I'm just glad this never happened. It just felt wrong from the moment I first read about it.

“The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine”
I love the song Yellow Submarine
Think it would be very cool to see YellowSubmarine animatet. Maybe in the future .....
It would be fantastic if PIXAR did a remake in CGI of Yellow Submarine, that would really be something to have!
Or part of the Lego movie franchise
No, no it wouldn’t. Leave the original only - it has a charm that reflects the time in which it was made. Modern technology would only ruin the concept of Yellow Submarine. Look at how Star Wars was ruined by the CGI ‘updates’……..some things are best left alone.
@@simonhodgetts6530 Totally don't agree!
With today's CGI tech they could make the music sound even better and the movie even more of a visual treat!
It would be a BLU-RAY the vast majority of Beatle fans would want!
My most favourite movie ever!! 😍
Oh look it's Kitsu😀
I reckon the higher ups should have taken the risk and go ahead and make it. I mean it’s THE BEATLES it wouldn’t have been a boxoffice flop for Image Movers and Disney.
THANK GOD
this is really good video with Doctor Who and The Beatles
How about a stage version?
Why do I want it.
A remake would be cool !
Since DISNEY approved Get Back and it was successful, is there a chance for this project??? A joint Zemekis - Jackson movie. I'm a dremer, i'm not the only one. I hope oine day they'll give us another YELLOW SUBMARINE and the world will see JH Boo . . . well, you try doing that sponataneosly ha ha ha
This would have ( still may..) been very popular. The samples look great!
The Yellow Submarine movie has a great script - if you love puns.
Anyone who thinks Yellow submarine is one of the greatest animated movies ever made is delusional.
I’m down for a Yellow Submarine remake, the 60’s film is great but a bit dated. Plus with new Beatles interest with Get Back, I’ve seen more people becoming fans and rediscovering the Beatles.
However, motion capture would’ve been the absolute WORST way to do this film. The dark and gritty realistic approach with the uncanny valley looking humans and creatures would’ve been a nightmare. It’s the totally wrong look and tone for a vibrant psychedelic light hearted film, it would’ve been the visual embodiment of a bad LSD trip.
Another thing this movie had against it was the motion capture characters are based on real people who were incredibly well known and there was no way to make the Beatles look convincing or not creepy with motion capture.
I could totally see a Yellow Submarine remake in a more experimental style, something like Spiderverse could be incredible or even Disney or Pixar could give it a shot. I’m so glad it got cancelled, it definitely wouldn’t have worked, not in that state at least!
i wonder if there is some uncanny valley with the way the Beatles look as 3D version of themselves, some of them are ok but not all.
new yellow sub needs paul's real voice and ringos' real voice, that would be the best thing of all
Of all the things we did not need, in the Top 5 was a remake of *Yellow Submarine.*
I heaved a heavy sigh of relief when I found this video. CANCELLED!!! Wonderful!!! When I first heard about this project I prayed for it go away and never be hears from again. It was Yellow Submarine that introduced me to the band in the early 70's and bought the soundtrack shortly thereafter, enjoying the strange George Martin instrumental side just as much as the songs. When I saw it the Hey Bulldog sequence was still missing but I loved the song, remaining among my favourites. The idea of an updated film, whether a direct remake or not was a nauseating thought. I hadn't heard any news in years and hoped that it was abandoned. This video confirmed this hope. From the footage and stills it looks like any of the other bland animation films being made nowadays. It looks absolutely terrible. Give me that old school animation style any day, flaws and all. Hopefully the footage will never see the light of day and perhaps inspire someone else to pick up the project. Just release the original film. I'd love to see it in an IMAX format if possible.
Any idea if the Molesworth film is still on?
This is just one of those movies that should never be touched again. It’s the equivalent of someone remaking Jaws or E.T.
Makes me a little sad to see people happy that this never got made, even if I kinda agree. Yellow Submarine was a childhood favorite of mine, and yeah, it really doesn't need a remake of any kind, least of all one with mocap. That being said, I do kinda love the absolutely bizarre concept art and renders of the inside of submarine and the sea of monsters. I love how massive the submarine looks, with all its dream-like, unexplainable mechanisms. Reminds me a bit of the short film Elephant Dream. Even the Beatles themselves have some pretty stylish designs, though the mocap animation is weird. Jeremy's redesign is about the only truly offensive redesign in my view. Who shaved him and *why would you do that*?
Would I want this movie to be completed? Not especially. Do I want what was made to stay lost? No, not at all, I think it's great that we have what we have. Fascinating little look into what could have been.
I think the jeremy thing was just an early rendering without any fuzz, I hope it was
@@flamingpi2245 That's a very good point that I hadn't thought of. Fuzz does take time to render if you want it to appear realistic, so that makes some sense. Though it doesn't explain the jacket and, uh, outie. I guess we'll never know unless someone clarifies, I suppose.
Kitsu Voice Reveal Ayo o.o
Well this ain't the first time The Beatles dealt with cancelled or lost media as there were plans to do another film akin to Yellow Submarine named Strawberry Fields Forever in the 80s which was going to be one of the first few animated films to use computer animation
I'd ike to see you tackle the unmade animated Wizard of Oz adaptation by John Boorman someday.
This would work far better now with our current cgi
I haven't even watched this video yet, but I can totally see why this was cancelled from the thumbnail. These CGI'd Beatles look almost like "Spitting Image" puppets.
I had the 1987 VHS edition and threw it away when I got the DVD three years ago. No I learn here that it’s highly sought after. Dang it, I could have made a bit of cash off that!
They've been working on a sequel for years
Why was Brian Epstien not on board with the Beatles appearing on Dr. Who?
Maybe they should get Peter Jackson to rejuvenate the project. Loved Tintin - and what he did with Get Back was nothing short of astonishing!
I sent a letter to him asking him that and so far I haven’t heard anything
Are the animated cells for sale?
thank God it never happened, people need to realize you can't improve on the perfection of the era. no matter how long its been
I wouldve love this
Thanks gods!
Please leave this movie alone. All a remake does is ruin things. I havent seen a remake yet that stands up to the original. On the other hand, I watch very few remakes as they always disappoint me
Imagine if the uncanny beatles appeared in the Chip N' Dale movie
i think the animation and concept art look AMAZING.....caveat being the fact that the Blue Meanies are Nightmare Fuel trying to look all Physically and Facially Realistic *cringes, feels a bit nauseated*. Despite how NEAT some of this motion capture thing is, doesn't Zemeckis know that the Uncanny Valley is really what kept a lot of these flicks from making money? It works for "Beowulf". that's not for kids or multi-generational audiences. But anything that looks like an Animatronic with way more mobility...get ready for the kids to want to sleep with the lights on or in your room.
