- Despite the loved and praise heaped upon it after its release, The Beatles hated the idea of Yellow Submarine right from the start. The put no effort into either the film or the soundtrack album which has become one of fans least loved albums. The film's 1999 restoration and re-worked soundtrack album rescued its reputation and ensured it captured a new generation of fans - the Beatles included! In this video, we look at the history of the songs from the film and how its 1969 and 1999 soundtracks were put together. So, all aboard the story of the Yellow Submarine album!

Journey did a great version of the song on their "Look into the Future" LP. They even played backwards at the end.
The Church (the band) did a great cover of It's All Too Much on an album called A Box of Birds. Worth chasing up
Brian Epstein had written a suicide note (but didn't carry through with the suicide at the time). In it, he wrote, "This is all too much and I can't take it anymore."

The fact that the tracks on yellow submarine are throwaway tracks are just a sentiment to how good the Beatles really are

The Beatles definitely don’t have an awful track. They have some tracks I care less for and some I care more for, but they’ve always maintained a strong quality. I don’t think John, Paul, and the guys would have ever just released straight garbage. Too much good material to do that.
My first reaction to Revolution 9 wasn't positive - more like confusion, I guess. But it grew on me, and became part of the flow of the album. Guys I hung with at the time used to quoted from it in a sort of word play - non sequiturs in casual yakking.@@Gabriel2oh6
Its definitely John, and sounds like hes beginning to say "To your mother" but is cut off from the guitar chord. At least thats what I always thought since childhood.

This is my favorite Beatles album. I had this one on constant rotation at one point. Those new tracks from that period that the band considered throw-aways are some of their best tunes and George Martin's score from side B is brilliant
Testify!.... You got it right. Americans receiving Sgt. Pepper's, then Magical Mystety Tour, then Yellow Submarine in rapid succession was a fan dream come true. LOVE everything about George Martin's Soundtrack.

Having heard the two US version of Hard Days Night and Help, where the instrumentals are mixed in, I had a go at my own version treating Yellow Submarine in the same way - just to see if it would work. (my imagined events in the brackets) :
Side 1 :
1 - 'Pepperland' (Opening Titles + Assembling the crew)
2 - 'Yellow Submarine (cast off)
3 - Sea Of Time (exploring)
4 - Only A Northern Song (sailors on board having a sing song)
5 - All Together Now ('sea shanty')
6 - Sea Of Holes (more exploring)
7 - Sea Of Monsters (Arriving at their destination)

Side 2 :
1. Hey Bulldog (disembark)
2 - March Of The Meanies (spotting the Enemy)
3 - It's All Too Much (The Battle)

Anyway, just an alternative - It's still not a great album, but feels a little bit more cohesive.
Lovely idea! I always cherished the us version of A Hard days night. I love George Martins imaginative instrumental versions of those Beatles Songs. Help was done by another arranger and didn't work out that well apart from introducing the sitar to most of the Western world😊
Yellow Sub has always been one of my favourites. I absolutely love all the Harrison tracks with the influences from Indian music, and Hey Bulldog has one of the best Beatles basslines ever. I grew up dancing around the house to this album constantly as a child. It was always being played by my dad. Even though its not my favourite Beatles album, it definitely means a hell of a lot to me :]
I have always loved the Yellow Submarine original 1969 album, being one of the first three Beatles albums I heard when I became a fan, those albums were in my older sister's collection ! I appreciate the 1999 songtrack, but I still listen to the original album more often, and both sides too !
I actually enjoyed the George Martin half of Yellow Submarine.
Now that we have the Yellow Submarine Song Track. I'm hoping that somewhere down the line will get a full album worth of George Martin's original score for the movie as a separate release.
If you recall, either the US Help or Hard Day's Night intermixed The Beatles songs with the George Martin instrumental versions.
I think they both did, except it was Ken Thorpe who did Help! after George Martin and Richard Lester fell out during AHDN.
It’s All Too Much is, in my opinion, probably the best psychedelic track ever recorded. Sadly it seems to be frequently overlooked and much underrated.
That said, I do recall reading in either Q or Mojo magazine a few years ago, a review of the track which described it as being an undiscovered masterpiece in full view of the public. That’s me paraphrasing the actual words, but I could not agree more.

I've always felt that George Martin's score was way underappreciated. I remember getting many a chills as a kid during late night listens on my walkman to "March of the Meanies" or the imploding reverse sound effects on "Sea of Monsters".

In the days when you grew up with the Beatles as any record come out, everyone of my friends loved every release!! Yellow submarine was no exception! It’s an awesome record!! Side 2 is a phenomenal musical score!! Great work!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!! And I’ve been listening to the Beatles since 63.. when the Beatles took hold in America there was no stopping them!!😘

@@reddwood4971 The majority of. guitar work for George is too far back in the mix, for example All Too much. with a few additions over dubs by John and Paul. I have an outtake on a less than legal anthology cd and George could have joined any acid rock band or joined up with Jimi. Heard in the front of the mix without the organ you’d never guess it was the Quiet Beatle.
In the early part of theis century 2006 onwards,my friends children, all teenagers now used to love this on karaoke night.

“Hey Bulldog” is such an important part of my life. It was the 1st song I learned to love as a 6 year old in the ‘80s. My father was a huge Beatles fan and had many records and cassettes of them. He would play them often and that was the 1st song to catch my ear that I really liked. The Beatles became my 1st favorite band for years. To this day they are still near the top of my favorite bands list.
In “It’s All Too Much” my guess for what John says at the beginning is “To your mum”. It’s the only thing I can think of that makes sense.
Hmm. I just went to my Spotify and played it and the lyrics says “To Jorma”. Interesting. Sounds like a Finnish name.

Oops I misread the start of your comment. But it got me thinking about a famous 'botched album production'. Perhaps Metallica could get Giles Martin to remix/remaster the 'And Justice For All...' album!
I have always loved this record. I think George Martins compositional contribution was immense. The Beatle originals worked very well in the context of the film. Thanks for revisiting this gem!
I can remember countless visits to the record bar and standing there at the box with yellow submarine in hand ,wanting to buy it and then reading the song list and putting it back in the box again 🤣
I'm not sure where I read this, probably Mark Lewisohn's book, but apparently, "Baby, You're A Rich Man" was originally one of the four songs that fulfilled the Beatles' contractual obligation toward the film. But then they needed a B-side for "All You Need Is Love," and they were down to three "new" songs again for the soundtrack. It took them almost a year to finally bring the number back up to four with "Hey Bulldog."
Sounds correct, though a bit strange that they didn't knock up something during their MMT sessions, rather than supplying a song when the film was virtually complete!
In "The Beatles Forever," Nicholas Schaffner indicated that "Baby You're A Rich Man" was originally set aside as one of the new tracks on the YS soundtrack. But then the Beatles wanted to put out "All You Need Is Love" as soon as possible after the "Our World" broadcast and they needed a b-side.
"You Know My Name" was started but left unfinished for this purpose. It's in the contract with King Features. The typed name is scratched out and replaced with a handwritten "Hey Bulldog". This appears under the images from YS on the page in the Anthology book.@@PlanetoftheDeaf
I remember going to the theater to see the movie. At the time, I had no idea the voices were not the Beatles themselves. I thought it was just an odd movie that made no sense.
I've always enjoyed side one, not side two.
I genuinely enjoy Peter's 1999 remaster version better. His remaster of Baby You're A Rich Man is my go to version for that song.
Not only was it not The Beatles' voices, but IIRC, there are *two* different George voices -- because the original George voice was hauled away for draft dodging in mid-production!
If a box set of the songs recorded for Yellow Submarine was released it would have to be part of a Magical Mystery Tour box set simply because All Together Now, All You Need Is Love, Baby You're a Rich Man and It's All Too Much were all recorded during the same time period, Hey Bulldog was recorded during the Lady Madonna sessions and Only A Northern Song was recorded during the Pepper sessions.

I do have one correction to offer: you have misspelled (and mispronounced throughout) the name of the film’s producer. It’s Brodax, not Broadax, as can be seen in the short clip of the Beatles cartoon series.

Great stuff Andrew. My abiding memory of this album is standing in a listening booth in a Glasgow record store with my teenage sister. I was nearly seven at the time (1969) and my sister was saying “Are you sure you want this?” Because of George Martin’s music on side 2. Needless to say I did and we bought it. I’ve always loved it. Around millennium time I was DJing in a bikers pub and I played It’s All Too Much very loud. It went down a storm amid the haze of whatever was being smoked in there! I always thought John’s phrase at the start was something backwards.
“It’s all too much” is one of the greatest songs of all time. It was way ahead of it’s time.

George was rightly angry at the way that Dick James had ripped them off when they knew hardly anything about the dirty business side of the music industry.
The Beatles really missed a trick not getting involved more closely. Yellow Submarine is a masterpiece of the times.
Even George Martin's score seems to get better with time.
The music biz seems to be pretty dirty back then. I remember seeing an interview with Ray Davies and he basically said that in British music a lot of the 'suits' we're 1950s style spivs who'd basically found a new racket to cash in on!
"Only A Northern Song" is a favourite of mine. In the recent "Get Back" film, the other Beatles were making snarky comments in front of Dick James, so George was ahead of the curve on that one. James got them to sign a rubbish contract when they were 'young and hungry'. I only bought two Beatle's albums. "Revolver" and "Yellow Submarine".
14:28 : I hope you will grace us with a small explanation of the lawsuit in your future videos linked to the making of Yellow Submarine. It first gave me the impression of something I should have known, but after digging a little, I wasn't aware of such conflict regarding the home video distribution rights.

When I play this record I shuffle the songs with the instrumental music and find it a most enjoyable listening experience.
I loved them then, now and forever.
I also like the Help soundtrack.
I loved this album from the first time I heard it... And then and there I realized why George Martin is the real 5th Beatles. His contribution makes this film and album what it stands for...a Classical piece of work
You mention BBC2 broadcasting the film at Christmas 1979. The 11 year old me watched it with my family, and it got me hooked on the Beatles. I started playing some original Beatles singles and EPs that my older brother left behind when he moved abroad. I started saving my pocket money to gradually buy albums. I love that I discovered a band that has stayed with me for all my life, and as I get older the fascination and my admiration for what they achieved grows every year.

I’m one of the few, I guess, who really liked the original (stereo & mono) LP and especially the George Martin side. What a brilliant piece of work and should really be heard in stereo.
I would love the EP to be put out on vinyl as intended and maybe done like the MMT cd …mono and stereo. I would think it would work since vinyl’s resurgence in the market these days. And man, if these were throwaway tunes why did so many people cover “It’s All Too Much”? Like Steve Hackett for instance. It’s a great tune!

"It's All Too Much" is one of those tracks which has gained in esteem over the years. I always liked it and it's gratifying to realise how its effect on subsequent generations has been very positive.
I've often found that when I play that track to people forty years younger than myself they not only really enjoy it but are astonished to discover that, "THIS is The Beatles???"

But personally, I think 'It's All Too Much' is fantastic, and a really underrated George classic! And 'Hey Bulldog' is definitely one of The Beatles finest rock songs. I thought I'd take the time to ask you if you're aware of another "lost" Al Brodax Beatles animated film called 'Strawberry Fields' from 1987? I had absolutely NO IDEA about this film until recently, when I stumbled upon an article about it in an old English magazine called 'Celebrity' (Dated AUG.27-SEPT.2 No. 83 1987). I was stunned! Never knew about it! I would LOVE to see a video made about this! Please Google this film if you don't know about it. And if you were ever interested in doing a video I could email you a full colour double page spread about it. Fascinating!

I’ll always go with John taking lead guitar on Hey Bulldog. I know it’s been said otherwise but it’s very his style. Lots of attack and double string stuff. A bit like his solo on Can’t Do That. George’s style a lot more single note intricate stuff. Also bits remind me of Johns solo parts in The End.
Now that you mention that, I think you have a very good argument.
I had always tended towards the opinion that it was George, but possibly Paul. I had never even considered John. But now, I'm at least 70% convinced that it feels more like John than anyone else.
However, at this point, I think we can all safely say that it was definitely NOT Ringo!
Agreed, I also noticed the similarity to John's solo turns in "The End."
Although I always loved the film, I never bought the original soundtrack. Consequently as an American, I was largely unaware of Hey Bulldog for many many years. With renewed interest in Yellow Submarine in the late 90s due to the restoration and rerelease, I did buy the song track upon its release in 1999. I recall how absolutely amazing the song track album sounded. All the remixed songs sounded vibrant and fresh. And this was the first time I had ever heard Hey Bulldog. A stunning surprise and a superb rocker.
It was always one of my favorite Beatles songs and I do remember hearing it from time to time; could they have put it on the '67-'70 compilation? I had always assumed it was from Revolver or Rubber Soul; it sound more like something from that period.
I remember getting the VHS copy as a 7 year old and loving it. The movie is magical for all ages, and the music is wonderful.
Side Two is a lovely listening experience! Perfect for a Sunday morning…
Love this album! I always liked arrangement of Only a Northern Song. So mysterious and dreamy with all that bells and false notes. It's All Too Much is one more George's gorgeous song. Stringy, oriental-like and punchy at the same time. The only song that seemed to be a bit silly is All Together Now but it contrasts well with other songs. George Martin's suite is a masterpiece. How much instrumentation skill and musical ideas he had! But when I listened it for the first time on cassette, I thought it's recorded something wrong, not The Beatles at all. Until I heard the last piece - Yellow Submarine in Pepperland))
George Martin's score was amazing. I used to listen to both sides of the album when I was a kid. There was definitely criticism of the fact that most people already owned copies of Yellow Submarine and Alll You Need is Love. The 1999 version was a much better idea, and I got to relive the movie with my son. As always, great upload!
Hi Andrew. Nice video as always. Yellow Submarine premiered in cinemas in former Czechoslovakia in 1973, but the soundtrack was released in Hungary in 1983.
But I watched Yellow Submarine on TV, probably in mid 90s. Too shame the DVDs or Blu-ray don't include czech subtitles (do know in Apple that DVD can have up to 32 different subtitles?), those on TV were great, translated by Mr. Palouš, who did all Beatles movies (and Monty Python's Flying Circus). His language skills and playing with words were phenomenal.
You got me thinking Andrew about the "Poorly Served Period" between 7/67 and 7/68. Here is my suggestion for the Lads and Lassies at Apple. A ''lost" Beatles album if you will titled: "Mindbender" Side 1 Magical Mystery Tour The Fool On The Hill I Am The Walrus Hello Goodbye Blue Jay Way Your Mother Should Know Flying Side 2 Its All Too Much Baby You're A Rich Man All Together Now Its Only A Norther Song Hey Bulldog The Inner Light All You Need Is Love . I love it for George Martin’s dreamy score. I’m also a big fan of his Live & Let Die score. I wish he’d done more film work.
Love this album. Got it when I was 8. The cover is eye-popping. Worth it alone just for Hey Bulldog. Plus The George Martin music on side 2 is gorgeous. Takes me to another world. True Beatle fans love all the albums!

In the late eighties I saved up money to get a VHS copy of Yellow Submarine from HMV in Oldham. Now I realise, from watching your video that I had grown up watching the US version. Then when I got the lp eventually Hey Bulldog was puzzling. I finally saw the full cut a few years later on Channel 4 and found it jarring. The bulldog sequence also looked rougher than the rest of the film. I've always had a soft spot for this album, particularly George's songs and proudly own on original mono. Thanks for the video!
Someone has already pointed out the correct spelling of Al’s surname (it’s M-E-A-T-A-X-E 😊), but “to your much” is the best suggestion I’ve heard to date and consistent with John’s style of wordplay. As for the ‘Hey Bulldog’ solo: if you listen to Paul’s guitar solos from ‘Taxman’ through to ‘The End’, they virtually all start a similar way on the root (and sometimes also 5th) note of the song’s key, rapidly plucked. Add in the melodic two-note harmony of the bulk of the solo and it’s hard to imagine he didn’t have a hand in it (either creatively or literally).
I've got a theory about "Hey Bulldog," and a small question for you, Andrew, should you choose to investigate it. I'm convinced that "Hey Bulldog" was a barb John aimed at Paul, and he pranked Paul into enthusiastically participating.
John was angry that Paul was getting all the A-sides, and the sting of "Hello Goodbye" getting precedence over "I Am the Walrus" was still fresh. Under the influence of Yoko, John was rebelling against Paul's character sketches, with "Lady Madonna" being the latest. I believe the original title, "Hey Bullfrog," mocked Paul's affected Elvis impersonation on "Lady Madonna." There are other clues - "Sheepdog standing in the rain/Bullfrog doing it again" sounds as if Paul had started writing "Martha My Dear," inspired by his sheepdog. In this light, every lyric in the song sounds like a dig at his partner - "Some kind of innocence is measured out in you/You think you know me but you haven't got a clue." We know Paul got excited with his bass part, and with the dialogue at the end. I actually think the guitar lead was also by Paul - it's got the same rat-a-tat machine gun-type riff as his leads on "Taxman," "The End," "Too Many People," and "No Words." It's understandable that, after pranking Paul so thoroughly, John may have been embarrassed enough by his own motivation to understate the meaning of one of the last upbeat rockers he would write.
So here's your, task, Andrew: What can you tell us about the Wigwam? It's the nickname for the Liverpool cathedral which was finished in 1967. Is there any evidence of Paul contributing to it, or participating in any opening events? That would be just the kind of establishment happening that John would deride. I do know that Paul recorded and publicly debuted the Liverpool Oratorio at the Wigwam. And the cathedral roof had leaks, where the rain came in.

Great info as usual. I think the "Yellow Submarine" album would have been greatly improved had they filled side two with hit singles that hadn't yet been released on LP. "Hey Jude", "Revolution", "Rain", "Lady Madonna", and "Paperback Writer". Imagine that tracklisting for side two. Then, there wouldn't have been a need for the cobbled-together "Hey Jude" album from 1970. Putting those tracks on side two of the "Yellow Submarine" as "bonus" material would have been for a nice listening experience and made more sense because the tracks would have all been from the same two-year period. The later "Hey Jude" compilation spans from 1964-1969 and doesn't have a cohesive sound.

However, I wonder if the Yellow Submarine soundtrack album was the best payday of George Martin's career? If so, I wouldn't grudge him a single penny of those royalties because he didn't have a very lucrative contract as a producer with EMI.

I agree, they should have put Rain twice on the album.
I don’t think it works. Yellow Submarine is a child of their psychedelic era around 1967 and songs like Hey Jude and Revolution are already part of their classic rock era that started in 1968.

Love your videos Andrew! However, small factual error at 9:30. The 1987 home video release of the film was the version without “Hey Bulldog.” It ‘s often overlooked, but there were other changes to the film affecting “All You Need Is Love” and the scene where the Beatles meet Sgt. Pepper’s band. “Baby You’re A Rich Man” was not added until “Hey Bulldog” came out. The 1979 BBC airing you refer to is actually a hybrid where “Hey Bulldog” was spliced in to the revised version of the film.

Hi Andrew, I confess to almost never listening to the original album as I thought it about as important as the Beatles themselves did lol! That aside Hey Bulldog is a great song and was much overlooked for years due it to it being lost on this album. I think i'm right in saying that this is the only Beatles song where George plays guitar on his own without Paul or John on a Beatles song. I think both John and Paul could have played the solo but it was George i'm sure and Geoff Emerick has said this somewhere in print too I think? I think John shouts "to your mother" but the chord he hits cuts off the end of the word mother. As for the release I can see why they released an album but for me I would love to have seen this as a 4 track EP with a picture sleeve at least in the UK and then maybe the album as was released as well. I loved the songtrack album when it came out in 99 and i agree they tracks sound wonderful. Great upload as always, Tim

Well Yellow Submarine is my least favourite Beatles album, because you get 4 original songs and a whole side of orchestration. For "All Too Much" John says to your muff (if you look it up you'll find isolated vocals, YT will automatically delete every comment with a link🙄). It's one of my favourite Beatles songs because it's very trippy and special. Their decision to issue the songs as an EP is the most logical one but because it didn't sell in the US, we sadly didn't get it. Anyway, great informative video Andrew 👍
The very 1st version of "It's Only a Northern Song" that i ever heard was on a cassette of The Anthology - Pt.2 i had received for my 11th birthday, and it's still my favorite to this day, even though i had since bought the '99 version of Yellow Submarine when it came out, and the original version of 1967 (both on CD). There a simply no bad songs on this 'selection' or soundtrack. When you listen to songs like Hey Bulldog on UA-cam, you often read comments like "great songs, or underrated which would have been #1 hit it was not The Beatles but any other bands who had released it".
I’ve always liked the 4 unique tracks but thought little of the album.
I remember the library where I’d borrow records in the 70s only had 2 Beatles LPs in their collection, Star Club & Yellow Sub.
Apparently nobody in Houston texas thought it was good enough to steal. 😂

I enjoy the record a lot, even side 2. While I do get why it's ranked low on Beatles releases, I don't think it's as bad as some people make it out to be. The George Martin instrumentals are enjoyable to listen to and you get some pretty good Beatles songs. And I like the cover art a lot.
I remember first seeing the film when it was broadcast on TV and by a weird circumstance our TV broke down at a specific point. During the sea of holes sequence, just as Ringo jumped into a hole, our screen went completely black. The sound continued, so we just stayed watching a blank screen for a very long time, thinking this sequence was pushing it a bit. It's only when we tried other channels we realised it was our own TV that was the issue.

A "throwaway" Beatles song? Scandalous! LOL! I was flat out amazed at how the DVD of the "Yellow Submarine" sounded. What beautiful sound!
Andrew and friends: Anybody else clue in that “Only A Northern Song”‘s tracking session was left out on the Sgt Pepper box set? As well as “All Together Now” and “It’s All Too Much”, both of which feasibly could have gone onto said box set, being mere weeks after the end of the sessions. And…. Notice how “Hey Bulldog”’s session highlights were conspicuously absent at the end of the White Album box set’s session discs (which highlighted the February 1968 pre-India sessions)? Hmmm?
No oversights there. I’m confident that a Magical Mystery Tour / Yellow Submarine box set will be coming in the future. The 6 MMT tunes, the 4 “new” YS tunes, plus “Baby You’re A Rich Man”, “You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)”, “All You Need Is Love” and “Hello Goodbye” - a grand total of 14 tracks to explore in a box set focused on one era.
Am I barmy for considering this a viable idea, Andrew?
PS: the Hey Bulldog scene was actually missing from all the international (non-UK) film versions, not just American.
I was one of those fans who was stumped as to why Hey Bulldog was left out. Years later, I'd seen a clip of it and liked it. Afterwards, I found a bootleg VHS with the sequence in it and it helped the plot, the story and the film make more sense, and the climax went a lot smoother as a result. We'd seen the 4-headed dog earlier, so why did it suddenly disappear? I have the 1999 DVD of it and if I'm not mistaken, it's out of print (again), but I did hear of the Blu-Ray being reissued sometime later. Jesus, what a way to absolutely put a pall on something that started in life as a harmless cartoon feature. Drama should be IN art, not surrounding it.
'Hey Bulldog' definitely made it into general release in the UK. I saw the film three or four times during its original 1968 run in the Odeon cinema in Belfast and 'Hey Bulldog' was there every time I saw it. It stood out as one of my favourite songs in the film. In 1975 the film was shown in the Queen's Film Theater in Belfast (the local university's film club) and several of us, all big fans, went to see it.
I remember we were surprised (an disappointed) to see that 'Hey Bulldog' was missing this time around, something we discussed with the cinema's manager after the screening, who assured us that they hadn't removed it and were just screening the print they'd received from the distributor.

I've always loved a lot of the tracks on Yellow Submarine: "Hey Bulldog" became my favorite Beatle song (along with "Hey Jude") in junior high. It's been fulfilling too that "Hey Bulldog" --a great fun rocker with one of Paul's best bass lines, has been surging in acclaim over the years (it's many lovers coming out of the woodwork). And the release of the Studio footage of Bulldog's recording session is 'the cream' on top. "It's All Too Much" with George's guitar feedback, etc; wonderful and "Only A Northern Song." Sure "All Together Now" is minor, but it's fun. Sure George Martin's soundtrack filler side is just that.
And I've loved the movie. So charming, creative, pop-psychedelic, fun... My fave Beatle movie along with Hard Day's Night. --And of course now Peter Jackson's "Get Back" production.
Yellow Submarine was also shown on BBC tv in 1976 and it fitted in perfectly with that weirdly hot punky hippy summer.
There was a very limited boutique cinema release in summer 2019, just the one day, to celebrate 50 years of YS. Sound was 5.1 stereo and isolated different parts to different speakers. Each seat had a souvenir envelope of stickers and badges. Very unusual for a public showing.
My children enjoyed the YS songtrack album on days out and my daughter in particular would give a cheery sing-a-long to the catalogue of human loneliness that is Eleanor Rigby!

I wasn’t aware of the Beatles yellow submarine original soundtrack until about the Beatles in stereo and mono box sets from 2009. it was a great game changer for me when I heard the soundtrack version on CD which was in a jeweled case when it was re-mixed in remastered in 1999. I was immediately blown away by how wonderful the music sounded remix I think it’s fantastic although I do have to agree agree with you Andrew and saying that the error on Eleanor Rigby should’ve been fixed. we should get a Deluxe Edition of yellow submarine I would especially love to have the unedited version of it’s all too much one of the best songs ever besides hey bulldog only a Northern song and it’s all too much and all together now.

I enjoyed the original Yellow Submarine album but think that the intended EP would have been a much better and more effective release. Hey Bulldog and It's Only a Northern Song are two underrated Beatles tracks, well, maybe they were then but not so much now. I feel this is mainly due to the fantastic sonic treatment they received on The Yellow Submarine Soundtrack, breathing a dynamism and freshness into the tracks whiich I felt were missing on the original album. Iv'e still got my original 1969 mono press. I also have a stereo Dutch copy. All Too Much and Hey Bulldog are the two stand out "new" tracks. Only A Northern Song is great too, All Together Now? hmmm, nice little ditty for round the campfire.

I remember seeing the film on tv and ended up taping it in the late 80s. Not sure when i first heard the album, but i would not be surprised if i went right to Hey Bulldog on it. And doubt i ever listened to the entire second side twice that summer. Maybe threw it on while i washed dishes or folded laundry. I havent heard it in years, as i ended up with the songtrack as the go to. I dont even know if i still have the original. Because its been many years since i listened to it. Would be a good one to throw on at a party just to mess with people.
I love the album in particular the songs Only A Northern Song, Hey Bulldog and It’s All Too Much. Hey Bulldog especially is one of my all time favorite Beatle tracks. I love the movie also and think it’s one of the neatest animated concepts ever. The YS Songtrack and reissue campaign in 1999 was spectacular and the mixes are stellar. 10/10 all around in my opinion. With the emergence of AI perhaps the voices on the movie could be replaced with the Beatles voices…interesting!

Really enjoyed this video ! It’s a great album that sadly doesn’t get the credit it deserves.I first bought a copy in the mid 80’s as a teenager and loved the George Martin score side too.
The film was repeated on BBC 2 on 3.1.86,I recorded it and still have my original vhs tape with the ‘Hey Bulldog’ sequence in the film.
Also watched the UA-cam singalong version on 25.4.20,shown I presume to lift spirits during lockdown.. and it worked !
I asked my sister for this album back in the 1980's for Christmas I must have been 13 or 14. It was my first new vinyl album, I had some old used ones but nothing new and nothing by the Beatles. Anyway, I'd play it on mom and dad's old RCA tube console. I still have that album and the console stylus didn't destroy it! I even love side 2. I find it soothing and comfortable. But, to be honest, I don't care so much for the animated film. All Too Much is such a heavy song. I love the guitar work.

The original Yellow Submarine album actually changed my life. Here's the story: it's 1994, and I keep hearing good things about the Yellow Submarine film, but it was out of print at the time, so I thought, "If I can't see the movie, I'll listen to the album instead." So I get the album on cassette on my 11th birthday. Side one begins with the title track I was already familiar with, but then "Only a Northern Song" comes on. This is my first exposure to the Beatles' experimental psychedelic era, and I thought, "Whoa, this is some weird stuff...I love it!" Thus my mind was permanently blown.
Now here's an interesting tidbit. On the cassette version I had, side two began with Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, followed by the George Martin orchestral pieces. I don't know why, but I'm glad it did because that song also blew my 11-year-old mind.
Thank you Andrew for another fab gear video . One note Hey Bulldog did not surface on the 1987 VHS and Laser Disc . We still had the American release . It was until 1999 when Hey Bulldog was back in the film and was shown in the states

I have enjoyed the album since I received it at Christmas, 1975. For so called throwaways I think they are wonderful! If any, I would say “All Together Now” best fits that description. Side two is a fun listen.
The Songtrack release in 1999 was an outstanding idea! It’s interesting the thought hadn’t occurred to them in 1968.

Funny as a 60 year BEATLES fan and knowing EVERY album by heart both UK and US versions this album is such a nice group of songs. And some of my Top 5 are in here. Watched the movie with my daughter multiple times and the selection and sequence of songs with George Martin's genius production A MINI MASTERPIECE.
My then 12 year old sister heard the beginning of "It's All Too Much" in early 1969 and guessed the opening line was a truncation of "Listen to your mother". I haven't heard a better guess since. I first heard "Hey Bulldog" in early December 1968 when a local Washington, DC dee-jay played it from a tape he apparently got from the UK. I liked it immediately and thought it was a new single. Never heard it again until the album was released.
IMO, it's worth owning for It's All Too Much alone, because that's my favourite Beatles track :)
The Yellow Submarine Songtrack is a stroke of genius. (And that mix is my favourite version of the older songs featured).
Oddly enough despite all the re-issue box-sets, and stereo as well as mono versions of the albums I repurchased, I still do not have "The Yellow Submarine." My approach to it is that it would be useful only in the sense of a 12-Inch Single just for "It's Only A Northern Song," "Its All Too Much, and "Hey Bulldog" which you could throw in the mix when listening to "Magical Mystery Tour." George's two songs along with his "Blue Jay Way" have got to be amongst those of The Beatles at their most psychedelic.
I've got the movie on VHS, BRILLIANT MOVIE, I showed it to some friends and some people just don't understand the brilliance
These Yellow Submarine songs should have completed the Magical Mystery Tour songs into a full album and left Strawberry Fields/Penny Land and All You Need Is Love singles as stand alone. All those songs were recorded in the same period (apart from Sgt. Pepper songs) and feel cohesive. Hey Bulldog, Across The Universe, Lady Madonna, The Inner Light would have been a great early 1968 EP. MMT would have been a great 1967 Christmas album with the tracks: SIDE ONE: MMT, Fool On The Hill, Blue Jay Way, Flying, Your Mother Should Know, I Am The Walrus. SIDE TWO: Hello Goodbye, Only A Northern Song, All Together Now, It's All Too Much, You Know My Name (Look Up The Number).

If I recall correctly, the 1987 VHS does _not_ include the song, (the Beatles to Battle scene takes it place) but it is restored on the 1999 DVD :)
I believed I watched this back in 1990/91 on a Betamax copy from a video club. Rather than being puzzled by the lack of Hey Bulldog on the film it was the lack of the other songs on film that weren’t on the Yellow Submarine LP. I remember loving Nowhere Man as soon as I heard it there for the first time but couldn’t find the name of the song until finally got Rubber Soul.
I made my own version of the Yellow Submarine soundtrack decades ago I just followed the movie as a guide put all the songs used in the movie in chronological order with the George Martin soundtrack music inserted throughout it all fit on one CD and made a great soundtrack album to remember the film by.
Enjoyed your research Andrew!! I have ALWAYS been of the opinion that this album should have been released in mid 1968 - to coincide with the film. And that side 2 should've been made up of Beatles songs not in the film. Songs for contention could've been: Lady Madonna, The Inner Light, Across The Universe (the "Indian" version), Sour Milk Sea. Also early songs from the "White Album" sessions: Blackbird, Don't Pass Me By, Cry Baby Cry - & the single version of Revolution. The timing of the release would have been perfect - months before the release of The White Album. And the Yellow Submarine album could've been much more highly regarded !!

PPS: there is at least one 80s UK VHS without Hey Bulldog.
And the German versions never featured it either. The DVD, which also featured some other extended scenes (like the Beatles meeting the Sgt Peppers... Band) has been cheaply redubbed into German in those scenes.
