Instead of leaving a long strand at the beginnning and end I start and end with a chain of 10 stitches…it’s much neater and doesn’t get messy looking after several washings!

Hi Cathy, you can still buy issue 76 as a digital edition, here is a link where you will find all the options for downloading the correct version for whatever device you use - www.simplycrochetmag.co.uk/digitaleditions/. Alternatively, you can buy the individual pattern (or all of the Hook 'n' Learn patterns) here - www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hook-n-learn-part-9---apache-tears :)

Where can I find the patterns for previous kids that were available attached to your magazines?

I know you wrote this too years ago but I thought I'd respond anyway. You can get digital editions of Simply Crochet online here: www.simplycrochetmag.co.uk/digitaleditions/ or else, what I've done, is download the issues from the RB Digital app via my library card, so that could also be an option. Some libraries, when they're open of course, could have copies of old issues so that might be a good place to look for them too.

Please help I have torn apart my afghan 4 times.
The side you tie off for some reason keeps coming up short with each row I don’t know how to keep that side straight.

I know you wrote this a year ago but I just thought I'd respond anyway. It sounds like, from that description, that you're not going into the last stitch on the row each time which is causing it to look like it's not a flat side. Another possibility could be the tension you applied to each row being varied.

May I please ask why is it called Apache tear?

Hello Sylvia, thanks for the question. It is an established name for this stitch (we didnt come up with it) and it has been around since at least the 80’s if not earlier (although unknown who invented it, it possibly comes from a quilting technique). The simple answer is that the geometric/ striped/zigzag style of the stitch is in similar to the textile traditions of the apache tribe (although obviously not reserved to just that tribe), and the spike stitches look like tears…. However….
“The name "Apache tear" comes from a legend of the Apache tribe: about 75 Apaches and the US Cavalry fought on a mountain overlooking what is now Superior, Arizona, in the 1870s. Facing defeat, the outnumbered Apache warriors rode their horses off the mountain to their deaths rather than be killed. The wives and families of the warriors cried when they heard of the tragedy; their tears turned into stone upon hitting the ground” - (which is why obsidian stone is also known as apache tear)

Ok I read the explanation for the name, and I'm still cringing. At this point in time maybe asking some Indian people what they think of the name might be appropriate. I am not even sure the word "Apache" is still used as a tribe name anymore.

This woman says it better than I can. She's funny, but if you don't want to watch the entire video, the discussion about crafts and inclusion and diversity starts in about 27 minutes in.
