I have a few neck knife kits put together. I think it’s a good “just in case” backup.
A dog-tag signal mirror will fit under that whistle without adding bulk to the system.
If it stays under your shirt, there’s little chance of it snagging on something.
If you wear a button-up shirt, just pull it out from under the third button from the top. That way it’s not going to hang down into your fire when you bend over.

Nice little last ditch kit. Made a few myself. Mite add a small signal mirror to it though. Thanks for sharing

Some people will not want to have anything to do with a neck knife. They have their reasons, and I can understand their reasoning to some extent. The Prepared Wanderer is always introducing the viewers to different ideas for building various types of kits. To me the ESEE IZULA-B-BO, fixed blade neck knife with a skeletized handle in the black oxide finish is a better option for a knife that you will actually carry around your neck. This knife is extremely versatile and will "fit in" almost anywhere. This small-to-medium size knife can do a lot! Whether you decide to try to build the “latch ditch” neck sheath survival kit or just opt to carry the essential items in your pockets, it is important have items such as fire, cutting and signaling available on your person when venturing out into the woods. Thanks for the ideas and for the continued effort to produce interesting video content. - Tennessee Smoky

Nice setup - thanks for showing.
As a 'last ditch' option, I wouldn't want it to get lost, so I don't use a break-away strap, instead I wear it under my shirt, almost impossible to get caught.
A 90° spine is an absolutely must to me, massive gimpings are not, so I would grind the back down.

I'm a retired SERE Instructor, for my last ditch blade it's a Cold steel Pendleton mini hunter, My wife's is a ESSE, Izula (in pink). I've used Moras in the past but they don't hold up. My standard knife is either an ESSE 5 which is a beast of a knife or the Cold Steel SRK or master hunter. My big blade is a Benchmade 150 Bushmaster which I've been dragging around the world since 1977.

Mora’s don’t hold up? Only way you break a Mora is if you abuse it, ie user error.

Esse Izula with an aftermarket sheath and a Boker Tango are my EDC. Unless I'm going somewhere weird and I take the Tops California Cobra or Boker GTFO

I have a Mora Eldris. It works nice as a neck knife and for fire starting. It’s nice for scraping fat wood, striking a farro rod, and for feather sticks. I like the way you have the knife setup. Those ranger bands come in handy. ✌️

One can also sharpen the old dog tags to a razors edge for SERE purposes, just put the rubber dog tag grommet back around the dog tag for safety purposes, then inside a small pouch.

I use whatever I can afford ( dollar store and walmart ) which is typically low quality garbage or mediocre at best quality stuff according to the experts who have thousands of dollars to spend every day . I use what I have and I'm happy.

I’ve been into a 3 inch blade craze, It’s all I use on a daily basis. I carry a Reiff knives F3 in 3V and it’s phenomenal. I have two setups for it. I have a front pocket sheath for edc and a neck knife setup when I go out to the ranch hiking.

Got the SOG mini. The handle has 550paracord wrapped around it. A small waterproof stainless steel tube has a mini fero rod some cotton stuffed with vaseline in a small plastic bag. In front of the sheath have a few mathes with a small mirror in a altoids tin with bandages. Still need too fill up with a few small things

I have those photon lights on a couple of different neck knives. One of them is a Gerber Bear Grylls paracord knife. Yeah, I know but it is actually a pretty good knife. I did change out the orange paracord for a dark green and used sandpaper to mostly take the Bear Grylls name off the sheath because I think it looks much better, more subtle - and less cheesy - that way. It might be a little large for some folks as a neck knife but I like it for a camping/outdoors backup blade. I put ranger bands around my sheath, too. I took the keychain off the photon light on that one and ran small bankline through where it attached on the light and tied it off. I tied the other end of the bankline to one of the eyelets in the sheath so I won't drop/lose the light. I also have a ferro rod on there in a Kydex holder I made and attached with Chicago screws. On the back if the sheath, under the ranger bands, I keep the striker for the ferro rod - I don't have to worry about 90° spines if I have the dedicated striker and it is light and flat enough that I don't even notice it being there.

personally not keen on neck knives due to the risk of the cord goroting you, but the kit idea is great, olight have compact IP rated lights that'll outlast little ones like in the video, also race bike innertubes are great over knife grips or even under and over a cord wrap

Rubber tubing, the heat shrink variety. I’ve used it to join opposing ends and then shrank the tubing. Holds well and will come apart.

I carry a utica utk-n2. It's a great neck knife. I also like the mini pendleton hunter.
I don't like 3finger handle. To me i don't believe another inch of handle is a bad thing.
I also don't like those knives with no scales. Cord wrap is still uncomfortable to me.

A good video, I tend to agree with Dave Mcintyre though on the neck knife. If worn inside the shirt theres less need for the break away attachment. And just for others to reference here is is first video on the McIntyre survival rig - ua-cam.com/video/9BwUydd2JKo/v-deo.html
