I have Sisterlocks ( 7 1/2 years). I started with 3 inches of hair. It cost 500.00. I went to a consultant for the first 6 months. It would take 4 1/2 hours to retighten, and it would cost me 100.00. I went every 5 weeks. After that, I learned how to retighten it myself. I use a yarn needle. I’ve been doing it myself for 7 years.

Kendreka Bell I’m about to start my locs via two strand on my 8 year natural anniversary. Did u do them yourself or have someone else do them? I’m nervous about having the parts all over the place.
Another method of re-twisting is crocheting the locs which is basically using a crochet needle to tangle the locs together. It’s a good method to use if you have a lot of difficulty getting your hair to loc like I did, though it can be very painful if it gets too close to the roots😣
Cool video! I had my hair traditionally locd by a loctician and never went back. After a few years of experimenting maintenance techniques interlocked, twisted/palm roll, and lastly where I am now....just Separating.
I'm on my 6th or 7th set of locs & have entertained free-forming once I get past the starter stage, but I'm apprehensive about them turning flat like I've noticed in mostly all free-formed locs I've seen. Also, with my last set, I had to go 3 or 4 mos. without retwisting cuz I couldn't afford it, & by the time I did get a retwist, it was hard to get my new growth to lock, which I believed caused some thinking or inconsistency in uniform size of each individual loc later down the line.

Overall hair feels like wild/unidentified curls and overall soft when conditioned/washed. I do no other method besides retwist now because crocheting loose hairs has NOT worked. It has given me this kind of natural spiral texture that gives each loc it's own identity and I love that about it. My sister started her traditional locs with relaxed hair and I started mine with natural hair (2 months later) I have a little more amount of budding as her.
Started mine with braids back in late 2013 :D And I still have them on the tips. I know I should probably cut them off but it's kind of sentimental at this point, y'know? Like, 'this is what got me started... Now look where I am' kinda feeling. My hair grows fast so when I started mine, my hair was mid back. My sister braided me up and the rest was history. If there's one thing I wish I could control/change is that I wish my new growth would grow INTO the dang loc and stop going everywhere else! lol Currently, my length is at my posterior and growing, I think I may be forced to start snipping pretty soon since I don't want it -Rapunzel long- lol
The person who started my locs began setting the foundation by two strand twisting my hair, then two weeks later separated the two strands to create one strand. I have a low porosity 4b/c combination texture hair.
Why did they separate the twist? Is it necessary? I have actually just started my lock journey with two strand twists so I'm trying to get all the info I can get💐❤
denzhe singo she two strand twisted it so they can begin to form a loc. Keep in mind the two strand twists were a bit larger, so that when they were separated the now one strand will be the size of a new loc. This is not a common method, it’s just something I wanted done for me.
Semi-free form is when you twist your hair only up to about 1 to 2 inches from the base every 5 months or so. Semi free form locs are not twisted to the scalp.
$500 and UP for sisterlocks. I had 13 inches of dense hair and paid $1375 for install. I pay $140 every 4-6 weeks and $170 after 6 weeks for retightning monthly
I think people with locs think they’re more limited to styles than we really are. When I search for styles for locs, they’re all pretty similar, so I now search for “styles for medium length hair” and I found out there’s actually a lot of styles women with locs can actually do like regular women (I say regular women because it’s not necessarily women with African type hair you can do styles, it’s more so Caucasian women since locs do fall straight more so like type 1 hair). I used to get compliments on my loc styles a lot because I didn’t limit it to just what the loc community says I can do, lol. And my edges are perfectly fine and still in tact and none of my dreads has fallen out 😂👏🏼 But i don’t style as often anymore. Got lazy I suppose lol.
I have semi free-form locs, which I started and maintain myself. I am 3 years in and my locs are shoulder length. I leave my hair growth for around 2 months then when I get chance I interlock my hair with a crochet hook. I use dudu osun (black soap) to wash my locs and coconut oil for my scalp. I love my locs, I love any type too. Looking to dye my locks soon but contemplating on what colour I want.
I’ve been thinking about locs for years now and today I took a turn more towards getting them and watching YT for insight! I have been natural for 4 years now and I’m getting tired of it. How do you know which loc type and pattern is for you?
I want a medium size brick pattern traditional locs started with comb coils and finished with palm rolling I have thick fine hair that is about 4 inches long. Do you think my hair will get thicker as it grows?
Thank you beautiful queen this was very informative. I've been stressing because I started with braids because my type of hair just wouldn't stay twisted because it's just way too soft. It's grown a lot and everything between the braid and my scalp is completely locked and most of the braids have come loose and some have started to lock naturally but the tighter braids still look braided in some spots but it's really frizzy. What can I do to get it to look more like locks? I'm Cherokee Indian if that helps give you an idea of the type of texture it is. Great video by the way, very informative, and you are so very beautiful.. It was a pleasure
I have thick hair so i really can’t do much designs in my hair plus it’s long to my behind i usually pay 80 dollars most of the time i keep my hair in a bun only time i let my dreads down is when i wash them and let my scalp breathe
I have been waiting at least a month before a retwist. Been locked now for a year and 5 months but in the beginning with my starter locs I retwisted every two weeks.
I LOVE your locs! I have been so on the fence. I want to, but I am scared. If I could guarenteed mine would look like yours. 😍😍 I would do it tomorrow!
I started with two strand twists because you do have the option of styling your hair early on. I’ve been locing for almost a year now and haven’t seen any adverse affects from styling. But my type of styling is just putting my hair in a bun for a half up/down style. Nothing too straining on my roots or tight. Hope that helps!
My tst locced clients get styled all the time! I break apart and retwist the twists at every session, tho; every 6 weeks. I just don't put tension on the styles and my longer clients prefer the twists, to prevent coming as often
HELLO😀 GREAT INFORMATION, I JUST STARTED MY LOCS, AND DECIDED TO WAIT PER MONTH FOR A RETWIST😉 CAUSE I DO NOT WANT SOMEONE TO KEEP MESSING WITH MY HAIR TO OFTEN😌SO THIS IS MANIPULATION?? I FIGURE AFTER 3 MONTHS, I WILL WAIT EVERY 2 MONTHS FOR A RETWIST😌 BUT THAT DEPENDS ON HOW FAST MY HAIR GROWS WITH THIS STYLE😌ANY SUGGESTIONS?
I have interloc. Between my 4 week retwist I notice loose pieces of hair in-between the locs particularly in the back of my head. What is going on with my hair? I've had my locs for 3 years now
This is all crazy to me I paid $400 for my Sisterlock installation from a consultant from the site and have been retightening myself since installation.
Thank you for this video it’s very informative but I jus wanted to share another method to staring dreads . My husband jus locked my hair3 months ago an he used the Bantu knots an an kept them tied dwn .when ever I had to go out I’d leave the knots in an wear kinky curly clip ins they would hide the knots, if they come out jus retest .Also doing the knots were good because I didn’t have to use clips which could b uncomfortable

Currently, my length is at my posterior and growing, I think I may be forced to start snipping pretty soon since I don't want it -Rapunzel long- lol
How much did your locs shrink since you started with long hair?
@@KayQhosa About half way but my hair grows fast so I wasn't worried.
I love your hair but your beauty just got me spinning 😫😍🥰🥰
My loctician started me off with palm rolling, because i had lenghth. Im new to this still learning. I am happy to be on this journey. ⭐️
Thankyou for this video. Very informative :) I'm semi freeform by the way ,9 months in. Woo hoo ! :) Also love your Locs and makeup :)
Carly M thank you ☺️
The person who started my locs began setting the foundation by two strand twisting my hair, then two weeks later separated the two strands to create one strand.
@@tyreebrownart oh I see. Thanks for the clarity. My twists are already small so I guess I don't need to unravel them. Thanks!💐
denzhe singo no. Don’t. Hope your journey goes well! God bless!
Do you put anything in your locs and do you have a video on how you retwist your hair? I want to start my 14's locs
Non black women aren't "regular women"
I want a medium size brick pattern traditional locs started with comb coils and finished with palm rolling
I have thick fine hair that is about 4 inches long.
I started my locks by braiding my hair in many little braids. I washed and conditioned. They are now locks. I didn't know any better.
I have been waiting at least a month before a retwist. Been locked now for a year and 5 months but in the beginning with my starter locs I retwisted every two weeks.
The locs, the gap in your teeth... why so beautiful? 😍
I want to get locs so bad but the left side of my head has no edges 😩😭😭😭😭😭😭
*if that even makes sense*
When I first started doing locs I learned alot about all types and when I decided to get mines started I learned a lot about all types
I LOVE your locs! I have been so on the fence. I want to, but I am scared. If I could guarenteed mine would look like yours. 😍😍 I would do it tomorrow!
I started my locs with 3 strand twists
I just started mine the other day with 2 string twist down the twist look ever go away
The roots, specifically, need to be moisturized because anything you put on your dreads stays there because of the matting. Very nice vid.
I stopped using cream and gel.. I just use oil& water and leave in conditioner misted on my locs
Im going to start locs im so excited
YOU. ARE. BEAUTIFUL! Great information, thank you!
i just started Tuesday 6 daysin .did instant locs. so i'm in the beginning stages. love your length your hair is gorgeous
I just started too, with 2 strand twists. Day 1.
@@shamikaniski9655 welcome loc journey partner
Im muslim and have prayer rituals to perform daily so i crochet loc...8 years now...
What about microlocks
Omg I love your locks how many do you have have how did you start of your locks
This is completely random but... what is the name and brand of the lipstick your wearing 🥰
Don’t call them Dread-locs, there is nothing “dreadful” about locs. “Dreadlocks” are dreaded, but locs are natural for kinky hair.
I just started my locs on the 29th so they are two strand twisted so what are my limitations on styling?
Talia Waajid herbal cleanse and try a good quality clear aloe gel.
Nataya Pogue ok thanks 🙏🏽
My tst locced clients get styled all the time! I break apart and retwist the twists at every session, tho; every 6 weeks. I just don't put tension on the styles and my longer clients prefer the twists, to prevent coming as often
So wait if I want traditional locks I have to cut of my hear damaged hair???
In a corporate world do they hire you if you have dreadlocks for human Resources jobs? Im stuck between growing them or wait until i get a job.
What kind of locs do you have?? How were your started off?
What about two strand twist? I started with two strands and let it loc palm roll retwist
