Wire mesh, sewing the walls, propane, and house wrap!

  • We are finally ready to get our exterior closed up for the winter weather. We first added our #30 roofing felt (since we still hadn't received our two ply jumbo tex). Then we cut 2x2 welded wire mesh to length and staple them from our top nailers down to our toe ups, creating lateral shear strength. We overlapped every piece 10''. We also had a local propane company come out to set up a 1000 gallon tank that we will be renting from them. They did all the exterior work to get propane hooked up on the outside, thank you Wes!! We also "sewed" our bale walls as you can see in the video, this will make the wire mesh act as one unit inside and out. We do not have the inside done yet so there are just loose strings hanging EVERYWHERE. After all that we were finally able to get woven house wrap put up - so now we can sleep at night knowing our walls are not exposed to the elements. thanks for watching, dont forget to like and subscribe to stay updated!

    Great progress! Oh to be 30 years younger 🤣. Your children will be able to look back on incredible memories of how your family worked together to build your home. Thanks for sharing your journey.

    Whats with the tar paper? i thought straw bales had to breath? Hence the purpose of lime mortar ???

    • @buildingroots5873
      @buildingroots5873  3 роки тому

      good question. we put tar paper over all the wood surfaces to prevent cracking in the stucco which i feel is a must... the bottom wrap around is a rain splash to help with the rain that splashes back up from the ground. We simply did this because that is what we have seen be recommended. Im afraid I don't have an answer, i maybe would have reconsidered if I had thought about this especially since I did puncture holes through the tar paper to "sew" the walls (which i was nervous to do from the get go but our walls needed to get tied together in those areas)... where the osb portions of our house are, the tar paper was needed for the lime plaster to adhere to and is what i have seen others do.. We were waiting to get the two-ply jumbo tex but we just couldn't wait any longer and the two ply wasn't coming in (covid) so we used regular tar paper. I am not sure if that would have been a better option maybe?

    • @topherh5093
      @topherh5093 3 роки тому +1

      @@buildingroots5873 Not sure. i was just concerned about a non-breathing layer especially at the bottom where it is most likely a place where the straw would need to dry if moisture penetrated the wall.
      if some expert recommended it, i would listen to them. it just doesn't make sense to me.
      You might consider going back and sealing the holes that were made by the string?

      @buildingroots5873  3 роки тому

      @@topherh5093 yes i should do that with the holes! thank you, something i will think more about and have a solution when it comes time to get that wrap off! thanks again for all the comments and feedback

      @@buildingroots5873 no problem , i love what you guys are doing. My brother built a shop/barn from straw bale.. Costs little to nothing to heat. he has about 3ft of blown in cellulous in the attic. The fist 2 ft of wall up from the ground is concrete with straw bale sitting on top the wall.. The rest of frame structure is exposed timber we milled.

    Why wrap.over the bales? We did not do that with our strawbale home.
    Is that a county requirement where you are?

    • @buildingroots5873
      @buildingroots5873  7 місяців тому

      this was just to keep the bales dry and rodents out during the winter season since we were not able to plaster before the cold hit! We removed all of the wrap before plastering. thanks for watching!

    How do you prevent rodents from getting into the straw?

    • @buildingroots5873
      @buildingroots5873  7 місяців тому

      typically one would have plastered as soon as possible to prevent any rodents coming in. We were not able to get the plastering done due to the cold weather coming in (North Dakota falls and winters are cold) so we used the house wrap temporarily until we could plaster in the late spring. We were fortunate that we did not have any rodent problems and still do not!

    I love watching your build. Aren’t you concerned about the condensation on the metal against the strawbale? Why not just Cob directly onto the strawbale? Even with the tightest compression of the bales and string, the cob bonds perfectly with the strawbale. What are you doing to prevent condensation on the metal wire and other metal pieces that will be in direct contact with your cob? Thanks!

    • @buildingroots5873
      @buildingroots5873  3 роки тому +2

      honestly, we do not know but we trusted Andrew Morrison on this one being he has built numerous houses this way, plus we needed the extra lateral strength it provides with our 20' and 25' peaks. We are using Natural Hydraulic Lime, not cob but I have no idea if that makes a difference. Thanks for watching!

    Can you bring the tar paper up further. Could you use diamond lath instead of that wire.

    • @buildingroots5873
      @buildingroots5873  3 роки тому +1

      we are using diamond lathe on the inside where needed (around windows) and in places that may need it as well on the exterior but it is important to have one full piece of wire from top to bottom and 2x2 welded wire is what is recommended for this.

      haha, there is a possibilty that we could have mice in them now unfortunately.. there was nothing else we could do once the cold weather hit we had to get our house wrapped.. we are hoping to start plastering the outside in the next couple weeks and we will feel much better about everything.

    • @buildingroots5873
      @buildingroots5873  3 роки тому

      yes, we most likely will have an issue with that this winter until we get the outside lime plastered, unfortunately. after that though, it shouldnt be a problem if all is pastered well.
