    In these videos I forge Japanese blades by hand. I heat treat them, polish them, and make all the parts necessary for mounting them. These videos are targeted to people who are interested in metal art, blacksmithing, forging, knife-making, and sword-making or are simply interested in maker videos. I try to present content in a calm, relaxing fashion that anyone can enjoy watching, whether you participate in this hobby or not.
    My most recent blades are made from modern high carbon steel, such as W1 drill rod and custom W2 steel bars. In the future I plan on smelting my own tamahagane and making swords and daggers from that ancient steel.

    Hi, thank you very much for these informational videos, I want to forge a katana myself, but I don't have any tools. Can you tell me if I want to traditionally forge a katana with minimum tools, what are the things I need? And also, can I buy the tsuka, tsuba, saya, and everything else except blade and forge a blade myself, will they fit? I'm not sure if it'll be easy to forge a katana of exact same dimensions of those pre made parts.

      The best advice I can give you is this: If you want to forge a katana, don't start by trying to forge a katana. Make about 5 tantos first. Then do at least 3 wakazashis. Forging a katana is challenging, and you can't just jump into it. As you make daggers and medium-length blades, you'll gain the skills, and you'll acquire the equipment you need and you'll figure out how to use it. Regarding the tools you'll need, watch the videos on my channel start to finish, and make a list of the tools I use. Forging: 2.5 pound blacksmith hammer, box-jaw tongs, anvil, propane forge, calipers and rulers. Profiling: some kind of decent belt grinder, hand files. Quenching: a water tank of the correct size, tongs Polishing: water stones, sandpaper polishing rig (like my homemade one). And then there are other materials and things. You can buy tsuba, fuchi, kashira, and menuki, but everything else needs to be custom made. The habaki, saya, tsuka, etc. You can't make a blade to fit the other parts. You make the other parts to fit the blade.

    Can you do a video on making a katana via stock removal rather than forging?

      I'm sorry, I don't do stock removal. I wouldn't even know how.

    So just curious about why you don't use the clay coating to curve the blade in the quench as traditionally done?

    • @oldpuebloforge
      @oldpuebloforge  2 роки тому

      It is a myth that the curvature of the blade was traditionally achieved by differential heat treating. The clay causes some curvature, true, but some curve is always forged into the blade.

      It's honestly annoying how much myth surrounds Japanese blade smithing

    Would you recommend a coal forge or gas set up for someone starting out?

    • @oldpuebloforge

      Gas. It's easier to learn to use and control temperatures.

    Why do you apply water to the anvil? I've never seen that before.

    • @oldpuebloforge
      @oldpuebloforge  11 місяців тому +1

      Japanese blacksmiths use this technique. It's called "wet forging". The water evaporates explosively on contact with the hot metal, cleaning away the scale. This prevents you from beating the scale back into the surface of the steel. End result is less pitting when it comes time to profile.

    What were the starting dimensions on the initial bar

    • @oldpuebloforge
      @oldpuebloforge  2 роки тому

      Bigger than ideal. I'm purposefully making a giant honking sword. It's 28mm x 12mm x 760mm. It's going to be wide and thick and heavy. If English armored knights had carried katanas, this would be that katana.
