Excellent videos. W2 is my absolute favorite to work with.
Looking forward to receiving my three pack.
Nice work! It is fun to learn your way of doing things. Thanks for posting this!
Thank you so much for these great, detailed videos👍 Keep up the good work man.
For your Tanto you gave the size of the steel that you started with and the dimensions that you forged it into. With the forging and grinding done what are the final dimensions your Tanto has so I know I am in the ballpark of what you got. I bought your steel btw and I love it and will by more again!! Thanks.
I don't think the final dimensions have to be that precise. Plus, some defects, dings, dimples, bends, and whatnot will require gross correction. Use your artistic sense to create flowing lines, even tapers, appealing curves and such. There is huge variation in the tastes of individual smiths, and I don't claim to be an authority. I'm really glad you like the steel. Thank you!
Amazing work! Do you still have some W2 steel to sell? And can you send it to Switzerland? Much appreciated
Thank you! I sell on Amazon and ebay, and I'm happy to ship to Switzerland
I should be able to cast brass for the habaki right? dope videos man, i really enjoy watching the calm tutorials as well as working along. Currently working on some Gyuto kitchen knives, after that Ill start a tanto from some railroad steel i have laying around. Your sunobe video is great and will probably safe me a few days of work. Keep the great work up and thanks for the free advice!
Yes, you should be able to cast in brass or bronze. It'll just take some practice working at those higher temperatures.
Amazing work man. Love your videos! Where can i find the plaster casting canister that you use in this video?
It's a 3" diameter jewelry casting ring and base. I think I bought them off Ebay.
Would you consider making a video about your “sharpening device”? I got a couple of tantos that need polishing and any tips would be appreciated.
Yes, I'll do that. Thanks for asking. I can't say when I'll post it. I've got one video in the works now, and it'll be the one after that.
Excuse me, do you provide polishing service for antique Japanese sword ? Also do you kindly list any of the swords you have made for sale ? Apologies for my intrusive questions. Thank you for your kind understanding.
I'm sorry, but I do not offer polishing services, and I do not sell my blades. I give them to friends and family as gifts. Thank you for asking, though.
That's amazing work you did with the blade. 👍 Would you be interested in trading some blade work for some habaki/tsuba/fushi/kashira work? Could make a couple of fun videos too. ;-)
Thanks for the compliment. I really appreciate it. Yes, I'd be interested in doing a collaboration with you in the future.
were can i get a casting ring?
Online, jewelry casting supply. Get a big one. 3 inch diameter x 3 inch tall.
I need your steel in 36 inch bars
Sorry, I only have 12 inch bars. You can stack and forge weld into bigger bars, though. I have a video on that.
Where’s the finished product video?
I never got around to it. I destroyed my left biceps in an accident unrelated to blacksmithing, had to have surgery, and took a break.
Isn't your investment soluble in water? Wouldn't that be easier to extract your casting?
I would also love to see a video on investment casting. As always, very interesting video!
I don't believe the investment is soluble in water. Plaster (gypsum) from which the investment is made is very insoluble in water. After reaching the burnout and curing temperatures inside the kiln, certain physical properties of the investment have changed, and it may be that water affects it differently after that. I don't know. But I've divested the casting both with and without water, and the difficulty seems about the same to me. It's pretty easy both ways. The investment just crumbles and falls apart.
@@mikaloiselle9832 Since you spoke up, I'll make a specific video on lost wax casting.
@@oldpuebloforge I was saying that because i saw it on Man at Arms. Maybe they had a special kind of investment made to dissolve in water to release the cast
The hamon looks incredible! That was some serious activity and it was very visible. Great job!
Thank you!
