    How is that press treating you? And how does your W2 differ from W2 you would find at a “standard” supplier? Welcome back to youtube by the way 😎 i love your stuff

      Thank you! I had my W2 custom made to my own specifications. I'm not sure what W2 you're finding at standard suppliers. Before I had this made, I wasn't finding any W2 anywhere. Mine is a bit higher carbon than the W2 Aldo has had in the past few years. People have commented that Aldo's didn't harden as well as they would have liked. Mine is essentially very clean W1, 1095, or T10 plus vanadium. And I L-O-V-E the press.

    When you forge, grind/file, and polish this blade...will you PLEASE do a video of how you shape and polish the kissaki? I cannot find a video anywhere on the internet that shows this process and ive been looking for months. Thanks!

      @Primedragoon Thanks. Ya, I'm all better now. Have you looked into some of the smaller presses? Coal Iron Works has a 12 ton press that's pretty small.

      @@oldpuebloforge Hey good to have you back. How is the Coal Iron Works 12 tons? I've been looking into it for a while now and I can't decide if I should get it.

    • @oldpuebloforge

      @@mikaloiselle9832 It is perfect for what do. It's also small enough and relatively quiet so I can use it in an ordinary suburban neighborhood without bothering my neighbors. It's not as strong as the heavier duty presses, but it gets the job done.

    How many layers did you stack ?

    • @oldpuebloforge
      @oldpuebloforge 2 роки тому

      Too many. I had a lot of steel left over. I think it was 11 layers and it should have been 7-8.

  • @afrobumi
    @afrobumi 2 роки тому

    is folding not necessary for this kind of steel?

    • @oldpuebloforge
      @oldpuebloforge 2 роки тому +1

      No, it is not. Folding was necessary with ancient steel to homogenize and purify it, because the steel was impure and poor quality to start with. This is extremely high quality modern steel. Folding provides no additional benefit.

    what if I don't have a press?

    • @oldpuebloforge
      @oldpuebloforge 3 роки тому +1

      It can be done with multiple people with sledgehammers. In my very first video I show how to draw out a bar using a sledgehammer. But this requires the collaboration of a few people who know what they're doing.

      @@artificial_element On second thought, they don't have to know what they're doing. They only have to be willing to hold the metal and do what you tell them. My wife held the metal in my first few videos while I swung the sledgehammer.
