Flight Deck Safety Awareness Video Guide

- The Naval Safety Center has provided a printed magazine on flight-deck safety for many years. A few years ago, we produced this video to be used in the training of flight-deck personnel. Although a few years old, the information still is valid and is a good tool as a refresher for those familiar with flight-deck operations or for new people not accustomed to the flight deck. This video has been distributed on CD-ROMs for several years, but it is now being made available on the internet.

I wish i could go back!!!! Loved all of it! Corpsman on the flat tops 44 and now bad knees worked the blue and green side take you all for everything best men and women i have ever known few of us hated eachother but we always took care of each other best and some of the worst times in my life for sure. Remember not the person but the paper we defend everyone!

This great video recalls such fond memories of my Sea Duty aboard Carrier as embarked Flight Surgeon 45 years ago. You can remove the Doc from the NAVY, but never remove the NAVY from the Doc.

I am 'Go Navy' all the way. But t I totally respect, love, and appreciate each and every person who left our great sovereign soil who, whether they agree or disagree with our sitting President's military policy, and put their human body in potential harm's way. Regardless of your future plans for doing so, you were instructed in basic training that your life may be required in exchange for a fellow soldier or or a fellow countryman. You deserve and command the highest respect that the office of the highest command of your branch of service can bestow.
Best video/film I've seen that really gives an in-depth explaination on flight deck job duties, and the shirt and cranial (helmet) color code system.
Now I respect more than ever the ground crew.

He forgot the Postal Crew who loads and unloads the mail. They're very important White Shirts on the deck. The Movlas is always rigged before the barricade is rigged. The barricade was my least favorite drill. If you are on the deck and FOD walkdown is called, you will participate, no questions asked. Do they still show the film of the A-3D when the wire snapped? A lot of guys got killed and injured during that event. That was before my time, but a buddy was there. He said there was a Warrant Officer who had both legs severed below the knee, waiting for the helicopter to take off. He asked "what's the holdup?" Corpsman replied "waiting for the IV stand sir." The WO replied, "give me that!" He took the IV bag, held his arm up and exclaimed, "alright, let's go!" I was a Green shirt and made 2 deployments.
A lot has changed since '66-'67-'68......all for the better but I've never seen so many green shirts on the flight deck. I guess the vest help.
Damn that’s a lot of information
12 yrs, 7 deployments, 5 carriers, more workups than I can count as a Squadron AO, CAG Arm/dearm and 2/3 of that time at sea was working night shift on the flight deck. Most dangerous peacetime job a person can do is working on the flight deck of a carrier. Saw several fatal accidents and a few serious ones and all were caused by complancecy or lack of respect of the environment you are working in.
ABH- saw a few nasty accidents/injuries and they were all from complacency. When I was new in blue my biggest fear was accidentally pushing an aircraft overboard but luckily there were always a few more experienced people around to save me from myself :-).
william coe While I do feel very sorry for the guy I think he might also qualify for a Darwin award. How on Earth can you make that mistake? You're closer to the prop and it's hum than anyone on the flight deck and you can feel how rough it's making your clothes flap around. There were two other accidents that happened but I can't hold it against any flight deck personnel. An F-18 came in, caught the #3 wire, but before it stopped it's nose wheel collapsed. All I could think about were the sparks coming up near all that fuel and ammunition! Also, and this was no accident, we had a near fatality that was later (and I think correctly) labeled as an attempted suicide. How you can try to kill yourself on a flight deck and fail is beyond me.

I once read that their are a lot of new guys working on the flight deck because the longer you work on the deck the mire complacent you become. Is that true?

I have been watching many videos like these and done some research. I am interested in working as one of these multi-colored sailors. I am finishing high school and could use some pointers. Any tips?
I have a huge piece of advice that wasn't mentioned in the video. Number one, yes, keep you're head on a swivel. You'll hear that one a million times. Unless things have changed they'll also show you a bit of footage of some idiot getting sucked into the intake of a Prowler. They say the guy survived but I never believed it. What they didn't say In the video is that you NEVER, EVER, go anywhere near an aircraft unless you have a reason to be there.
I think you should ask why you'd want to be working on a flight deck. I don't want to dissuade you, but ask yourself why.
I worked the flight deck on the JFK during the 92 med cruise. Been bored ever since.
Working the flight deck on the Oriskany and Ranger was the most exciting time of my life! Nothing has ever came close since!
