  • To see the whole film, visit www.createspace.com/204558 . This is one of my favorite film clips. a scene from my TV special, Second Home. The sailors on the carrier let us see and shoot things they normally don't allow the press to see. But we were filmmakers and they respected our abilities. To see the documentary about how I made this and other films, visit www.createspace.com/204514.

    It's the most beautiful thing to see a f-14 tomcat making a deck landing!
    And even to see the small air brake pop up!

    shame on me! ! in all my adrenaline infused excitement of my positive flashbacks on the flight deck, I sincerely meant to, but totally forgot to show my appreciation and gratitude to a particular person. Captain's mast for me at 0900 hours for my lack of gratitude! Mr David Hoffman, thank you sir! Not only for taking the time to go record us young professionals, but even more so for openly sharing those slices into the unique world and time in our lives. thank you, thank you sir for a job well done.!!! As vf-14 flight deck troubleshooter, I've given countless thumbs up for my tomcats to launch off the cats. Here's my thumbs up to you sir for capturing us on film and sharing the results with the rest of the world. thanks again! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

    I was on the USS America CV-66 from 1991-1996. I was a Fly 3 blueshirt and then a EO (Elevator Operator) This brings back memories. I just showed this video to my 15 year daughter and she was amazed.

    I went to see my RIO when he was dying of cancer and he played your documentary for me on his laptop. I was focused on him and didn't pay attention to the details of the video. So glad I found this. Takes me back to days of flying the "turkey". My eternal gratitude to all the real Rainbow Warriors who saw to it we left "Mom" and came back safe every time! I still have vivid memories of an AO holding up bouquet of arming pins, giving a thumbs up on a weight board, my crusty old brown shirt telling me to take good care of HIS airplane (and he meant it), saluting that last shooter on my last Cat. My girl flies no more. Mom is at the bottom of the Atlantic. These kids in colors were family. Hope they all had great lives.

    see the guy with white vest and black checkerboard, leg out sideways, thumb going up higher and higher? that's what I did on cv-62, uss Independence as flight deck troubleshooter in vf-14 tophatters. 1982-84. med cruises, bagel station off Lebanon, multinational peacekeeping force, NATO exercises in artic circle, air cover for Marines at Beirut airport, etc. flight deck ops is already so intense and a major adrenaline rush on a beautiful, clear sky, sunny day as our f-14 tomcats shot off cats 1 and 2 in a hail of multiple thousands of pounds of thunderous thrust, intense heat blast, huge multi colored twin flames infused with the eye watering smell of burning jp5 as the catapult steam rushes at and envelops you with every bird launch!. now imagine experiencing all this at night in dark with minimal and subdued lights. not lit up like a sports stadium or Walmart parking lot, but dark like dark colored lenses on flashlights and no white lights on the flight deck. it certainly made for ramping up the levels of sheer intensity of both the action and extremely hazardous working environment. what a tremendous rush. we were just kids, 18,19,20 years old giving a thumbs up or down on $28,000,000 birds flight deck ops at night was the best! 1900 hours to 0700 hours, 7 days per week!

      Thank you E Drew. It is interesting that when the producers were beginning preproduction on Top Gun, they purchased a copy of my entire film and used it heavily in the creation of the film. As I understand it, some scenes and shots exactly fit what I had shot in the “documentary.”
      David Hoffman - filmmaker

    • @RightCenterBack321
      @RightCenterBack321 7 років тому +3

      Really? Wow, that's very interesting to know! It seems like the opening sequence to Top Gun was merely a sped-up version of what you produced. I think both scenes work well on their own merits - Top Gun captures the energy and intensity of the flight deck, while your scene captures the blood, grit, and sweat of the flight deck.
      Was this filmed prior to their 1982 or 1983 deployment?

      60-70..depending on ow many helos squadrons are aboard.The reduced air wing is because of budget cuts and Precision guided weapons...fewer weapons & aircraft needed to destroy targets. The ship in this video is the now decommissioned CV USS John F Kennedy(CV 67). This video has to be from the late 70's or early 80s.
