I wish i would have got into this back when i was going into my 20's. When you are young and poor and can't afford this shit, and don't care, it really adds up after a while. Now i'm nearly 30, and trying to catch up on my teeth and gum health and had to look this stuff up, because i was never really taught about flossing. Despite dentists telling you to floss, it always feels optional, and other than that, it always felt vague about flossing, like a "Just put it between your teeth and wiggle it around, that's fine. What? Your gums are bleeding, well they will stop bleeding if you do it more."
I still don't understand why dental isn't included in Universal healthcare, more people would pay more attention to their teeth, if the high cost of getting teeth cleaned or maintained or fixed doesn't deter people from it. It'd be like me breaking my leg and thinking "eh, it's not that bad. it'll go away eventually, right?"
I'm gonna go cry now, Night!

I work as a hygienist for a periodontist. I think it should be mentioned that each flossing tool is indicated for specific pocket depths. String floss is excellent for healthy mouths with 2-3mm pocketing. A waterpik, while it does not substitute flossing, is indicated in addition to flossing for 5-6mm pockets and the best results are achieved if the tip is paused and/or angled between the teeth.
Proxabrushes and soft picks should not be used just between teeth, but rather in the gum between the gum and the tooth.

I am really disappointed on dentists. Instead of explaining how to do oral care routine they just get mad at you saying: you don't brush well your teeth! Look how many stones you have! (after putting blue paste on teeth).

My mouth is an embarrassing nightmare. But thanks to your video, I see that there are alternatives to the regular dental floss which won't go in between some of my teeth. I’m not sure where you’re from and if this product is available in your area, but I’m sure there are equivalents. This mouthwash has a viscosity to it that makes it stick a bit longer and some ingredients that are working wonders on my gums. They are not swollen, red and bleeding anymore. No bad breath. If it helps, I had a round of antibiotics last month (for a sore throat) and I think it killed the bacteria under my gums, but flossing, brushing and using the repairing mouthwash before bed is doing wonders

Sometimes my tongue would feel like something was there but i could not get it out. Letting the water massage the location for a while caused a piece of something to come out and my teeth suddenly felt less irritable and cool. I got the portable version. I started using some of his floss tips and now my total oral care routine is over an hour a day lol. I’m in braces and it’s really difficult to floss so I’m using floss threaders dipped in toothpaste , proxabrushes dipped in toothpaste, water pik with mouthwash and different electric and manual toothbrushes. I have 10 different toothpaste and 10 different mouthwashes that I rotate between. Some products were bought from my dentist and not OTC. I also get my teeth cleaned every 3 months. I’ve been in braces for 4.5 years and it’ll probably be 5-6 years before I get them off and I also have impacted canines so it’s super important for me to take care of my teeth. I think I might be a little too obsessed though. I find myself going to different stores just to see if I can find new and different oral care products. I even found all the braces care items on Amazon. I Was very happy to find a whitener made just for braces since I’m in white ceramic brackets that stain easily. Next up is finding oral probiotics and ultra fine proxabrushes because my teeth are super tight and close together and it seems even the ones made for tight spaces are still too big in some areas. I never thought I’d start hoarding oral care. Exciting stuff for me 😅. Thanks so much for your tips. My favorite is the Proxabrush dipped in toothpaste. I use a non foaming gel based toothpaste just for this so that the brush glides better and I’m also not dealing with the excess foaming and spitting every 2 seconds while I’m trying to focus on flossing. Works out great 👍🏼

My condolences for having braces. They're a huge pain (sometimes literally) to clean, and eats up a pretty decent chunk of time in the bathroom just cleaning.
Seriously worth it though, and the feeling when your orthodontist finally removes them one day feels like heaven. Just remember to wear your eventual retainer for several more years :P

I got a Water Pic/flosser a few years ago. Just blasts away any food between my teeth. I have several crowns that are hard to floss because they are too close to each other. The only way to clean them is with the flosser. Really worth the money! I got an electrical one and a battery-charged portable one I got off Amazon. The electrical one is super strong. The portable one is good, too.

Thank you, Dr. Nemeth, for this informative video. I have tried these "flossalternatives," :) but I can't effectively get them between my teeth without causing discomfort. So I just floss, and thoroughly and vigorously RINSE right after. That makes a huge difference; it is amazing the amount of food particles I see after I floss and then rinse. And of course, my good ol' Waterpik but not as often as I should! :) The only effective flossalternative I've found is "The Doctor's Brushpicks." Inexpensive and I can get them in between some of my teeth but not all.

Registered dental hygienist of 34 years chiming in. Thank you for explaining this so well. Here’s the problem in a lot of general dentist office. With insurance reimbursements so low and overhead so costly, hygiene appointment times are being shortened to 30-45 minutes. Spending an acceptable amount of time doing hygiene instructions is a challenge. Additionally, in order to save money, many office are no longer giving out hygiene goody bags to their patients. It’s really hard to educate patients when you can’t even show them how to use a proxabrush or floss properly. If I can’t give them the basic tools to get their home care regimen jump started, then it’s very unlikely they will return in 6 months with any improvement. Honestly, it often very difficult to even get perio charting in during the shorten appointments.

@susanmetz9892 I completely agree and understand what you're saying. Just like a good physical trainer at a gym is worth their weight in gold so is a good dental hygienist. You pay the physical trainer to do an evaluation of your current physical condition and limitations. Based on the evaluation, he will recommend exercises and show you how to do those exercises to accomplish your goals. It's priceless when you accomplish your goals in the gym without getting hurt. If you don't hire a physical trainer, and you hurt yourself because you're going beyond your abilities or doing the exercise wrong, you're going to pay more in medical bills and/or not being able to work. Same thing with a hygienest. If you don't hire a one for an hour or two, then you're going to pay MUCH, MUCH MORE down the road getting cavities filled, root canals, crowns, and maybe even losing some or all of your teeth due to periodontitis. The $120 dollars I spent for a hygenist to come over for two hours and show the whole family how to care for our oral health was some of the best money I ever spent. I'm so glad I did it.

What you described is the widespread problem throughout all medical fields in the U.S. It would be impossible to run a dental or medical practice with the overhead being astronomical while the insurance reimbursement is minimal.

Oh man I want these. In my opinion flossing feels really satisfying and relieving any feeling of gunk, and these look like they would be even more satisfying
My only issue with water flosser is I feel the need to disinfect it pretty thoroughly before and after each use, and dry it out completely between uses due to paranoia about black mold, so it is too time consuming to use daily. I store it upside down with the handle hanging down to encourage any droplets left to drop out, and in a room that isn't high humidity (not the bathroom).
