Do you know the feeling, when you wish your granny or mom was this amazing and could teach you these intensely smart and kind instructions, and then you find someone this kind and smart on UA-cam, and you think the world is a great place? Well, this is how I am feeling right now. Melissa -- you are amazing. Thank you for this content and for being so fabulous!
Aw, thanks!
I’m making this for myself to use as a hospital robe when I have my baby boy! I’m adding inches to the waist area, to accommodate my belly. Thank you for the tutorial!
Hope you have an easy labor and everyone gets home healthy!
Thank you so much! My daughter is learning how to sew and announced she wants to make her own robe. We will use your instructions to make a pattern to fit her and assemble it together.
Have fun sewing together!
I was just thinking I needed a new robe!!! My old one finally went in the trash after more than 20 years!!! This looks amazing and easy. Thank you.
You can do it!
Perfect! I’m sewing a robe and the instructions for the collar threw me for a loop. Thank you for this video!

How fortuitous! Just mentioned to my son I need a robe and he said, why dont you make it yourself! I said I didn't have a pattern and the you posted your video. Thank you, thank you thank you. Really appreciate you and you support and advise. So happy 😊😁👍x
Awesome!
I'm so pleased you used a sheet, that's what I was wanting to make mine from 😍
I love old sheets for sleepwear
EXCELLENT, easy 2 follow. Moves quickly n not a lot of unnecessary talking. 👍🏾
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@Mellysews thanx! ...and I made one, from drafting the pattern to making a contrast on the binding. Subscribed!
So pleased you did this video. Ideal Xmas pressies for the whole family and so quick to sew up!! I am making all mine ankle length for now in fleece. And then the knee length for the spring!! Great tutorial!! Thank you x
Wonderful!
This is perfectly explained , thank you you’re amazing
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this fab and easy to follow tutorial. Been wanting a hammam style robe for a while - bit pricey to buy though. Found a couple of light cotton summer blankets at a local discounter by chance this weekend (less than €6 each), and thanks to you, am delighted with a robe I've created myself (tassles n all)! All for €12, with some yarn I already had, a long weekend, and a bit of patience 😁
Glad it was helpful!
I'm feeling Christmas presents for the whole fam-damily!

I've been looking for a robe for my little girl that was feminine but not unicorns or tacky licenced characters. I'm so excited to make her one for Christmas, now. Thank you for explaining how to size this! I'm excited to get creative with prints, texture, and adjustments.
Have fun!
You are great at explaining. Thanks.

Thanks for watching!
Very interesting
Glad you think so!
Hi thanks
Thanks for watching
Were you in my mind or something! 😍
LOL!
My jaw dropped at how easy you made it to attach the sleeves! I'm working on a dress right now with sleeves and I was really dreading it but I think I am going to ignore that step in the directions and use your approach instead!
This is called the flat construction method.
Great robe thank you. I would love for you to show how to start the ditch stitch on the collar.
Stitching in the ditch technique shown here mellysews.com/how-to-stitch-in-the-ditch/
Oh, my goodness! This is my first project, both using jersey fabric and making clothing. I had a heck of a time cutting my fabric. Especially with stripes! Any tips and tricks to getting things straight and with the stretchiness of the jersey?
Time, patience, starch, a ruler and a rotary cutter
thanks so much for this tutorial, super easy to follow. I just have one question, when measuring for the binding, im getting a little confused on how to measure the neckline. thanks!!!
You measure everywhere you will be sewing the binding to.
I made this, turned out well, except I could not figure out the collar/binding! I ended up just hemming everything, then sewing some lace over the area where the binding would be, as well as the hem of the sleeves
Way to make it work!
👍👍
🙂
Hi! I'd like to know how much fabric did you use. Such a helpful tutorial :)
You'd need to calculate it yourself, based on the pattern you draft mellysews.com/how-much-fabric-to-buy/
Hi Mel. Thanks for the video. Can you please explain how much do we need to splash and spread the binding at the neck? Thanks
It depends on how much curve you want to add.
This is so great! I assume the measurements would basically be the same if making this for a man, would that be correct? Men often have wider necks, would I need to make those measurements wider?
Yes, measuring would be similar for men and yes you would want to find the neck circumference of the man the robe is intended for.
I love this Melly. You appear to be using a knit fabric. Can it also be made in a woven fabric please?
Yes, but I highly recommend reading through the post linked in the video description before doing so.
Could I do this with Bamboo Terry Cloth and make the collar and belt with regular cotton fabric with stabilizer? Im so new to sewing but I always hate the bulk/feel of towel robes on the neck and belt..
Probably, but I couldn't say for sure how it would turn out. You might find the seams bulky.
Super madam
Thanks for watching!
Hi Mel. What fabric are you using on this robe and on the manikin?
This one is a French terry.
Can you please do a video on a kimono?
I don't have any plans for that, especially with "kimono" being identified as a culturally appropriative term.
I wonder how much fabric I'll need to buy to do this?
It depends. Here's how to figure it out: mellysews.com/how-much-fabric-to-buy/
How many yards of fabric would you say you need for this?
It depends on the size. Here's how to calculate yardage mellysews.com/how-much-fabric-to-buy/
Hi Mel, what seam allowance do you use please?
I tend to prefer a 1/2 in seam allowance, but you can add whatever measurement you prefer.
@@Mellysews Great, thanks so much.
I'm finding it very difficult to find any ready-made robes that aren't polyester (that don't cost a fortune). I haven't sewn in years but I want to try this as my first project. I've lost a lot of weight and so none of my old robes fit!
You can do it!
I know this is an old video but is there a way I can give this a flared base? Like the robe gets wider at the bottom so it has a little bit of movement and drape?
Sure. You might want to check out how I modified the pattern for this robe ua-cam.com/video/8a7hmvfUnms/v-deo.html
I’m trying to make this with a cotton bedsheet, but every time I sew along the underarms and down the side seam, I get bunching. I did a snip into the corner, but I still get bunching. Any ideas where I’m going wrong and what I can do? I’ve unpicked it about 8 times now!
You have to snip pretty close in to the stitching and then you'll still likely get wrinkles, which are different from bunching. My most recent video about sleeves helps explain this: ua-cam.com/video/NrUCHFk6LRw/v-deo.html
You look and sound so much like AOC!
I'll take that as a compliment - she's a smart woman.
