Recently I just had the exam done. The Maryland exam" after I completed the exam the Dr. went over the exam results, she said I had significant hearing loss in my left ear like 90% which I knew this, what surprised me when she said I had hearing loss in my Right ear as well and as you said she said I needed to make and appointment to get hearing aides, the doctor did say I would be compensated for my hearing loss and I was surprised by her matter of fact statement is that normal?
Doctor Cliff, AuD I have just lately been searching the net about concussions and their effects one The brain. I have tinnitus and receive 10% compensation from the VA but believe I have more problems than tinnitus. Thank you for any help .

GT FORD 427 + GT Ford 427 Based on personal experience: Contact your local VA Rep and discuss in person. My husband's VA Rep was of great help and did the paperwork for him that can be tedious. They look things up on a computer and may help, by discovery, in other ways Vets don't know they qualify regarding benefits and compensation. Also, if a Vet doesn't qualify now, they need to try again in the future because qualifications change. For example, if a Viet Nam Vet or a Vet stationed in S. Korea where Agent Orange was experimented, the list of health related issues from Agent Orange has grown. All Vets deserve to get benefits and/or compensation after serving our Country. One that surprised me when selling Real Estate ( long ago) were the Vets that didn't know they could purchase a home with no money down. Is 100 percent financing and at a lower interest rate! This, in itself, is a great benefit and well earned.
Process for compensation was the first place I went. Mine was from jet aircraft engines as well as the 50 caliber and 30 caliber weapons. The doctor I first went to was totally denying my claim. I finally got a different Doctor and she agreed that it happened while I was in the military. She asked me several questions and said I had a considerable hearing loss and the screaming ringing in my ears sounded like a T-37 scream inside my head. I got my rating for both hearing loss and tinnitus. Thank God I have found that while my hearing aides are in my ears the ringing is gone. It wakes me up at night sometimes.
Dr. Cliff, I was tested for Tinnitus, but was told I do not have. I asked the audiologist did she hear the ringing in my ears, she said no. I then asked her how she could determine I didn't have tinnitus. I received no answer. I worked around aircraft for 27 years. The VA is not your friend
Well I received my 10% VA rating for tinnitus back in 2017 and its primarily based on your MOS. I am artillery so it was pretty straightforward. There is a document that does the service connection for you.
Jackie Carter my tinnitus was denied and I worked on USMC flight line. Examiner asked if I wore hearing protection...I said yes when I had it on me. Any thoughts?!🇺🇸😳
Hello Dr. Cliff Olson,I listened 3:47 and you suggested filing a V.A. 21-526EZ ,going a VSO person you also mentioned getting checked by a V.A. examiner . Most Veterans get denied ,because of no current medical diagnosis for their claim. Most V.A. Doctors/Examiners and especially C&P Examiners gives a rats behind about us Veterans and definely are not in our best interest, but rather the V.A. .A Veteran needs a current diagnosis for their claim and the correct doctors who is specialized in that area,or an medical internist professional,or not?A 21-4138 should also be written, explaining briefly how their condition is service connected, how the condition affects their daily life"family, relationships and ability to work and maintain a job,any limitations and how severe it is.Too many of us are being deceived and lied to continually .
I was an 84D20 audio specialist at Ft Myer in Virginia. We set up large sound and recording systems for reviews that had to cover whole parade fields. The ceremonies sometimes included howitzer salutes by the Third Infantry ceremonial unit, and the US Army Field Band.Things got rather loud sometimes. This was 1969-71. But if you are an E5 and at the controls of General Westmorland's or Sec of the Army Stanley Resor's mike, you probably don't want them to see you are wearing earplugs! After service I worked as a recording engineer, and later owned a sound company for 24 years. So I have depended on my ears working well for my livelihood all my life. I now have constant tinnitus in both ears and, by my own simple testing, hearing loss above 7-8kHz and probably midrange loss of consonants of speech. Going to VA hearing test in April. Can they fit me with hearing aids that will correctly compensate me for losses at various frequencies to give me accurate hearing? I am still asked to mix sound for local theater productions but am not confident I can accurately do that?
What I have learned in this compensation and health care process, that there are a lot of people and entities that make money at the veterans expense, form the dark dingy doctors office that looks like a back alley abortion clinic, the middle man contract scheduler (VES, QTC), to people who run taxi or shuttle service for the veteran to and from appointments. Everyone benefits except the guy or gal living with issues every day.
I just had mine done Last month and I was told Yes i do have Hearing Loss in both Ears and Left ear is Worse then Right the person doing it told me she will send that report to The VBA with those results
As an audiologist, I just wanted to say: PLEASE do not fake or exaggerate a hearing loss. We can tell that your exaggerating immediately. This is what we do for a living; we do it all day, every day. If you have a bit of a hearing loss but try to exaggerate it, the audiologist will know that the results are not valid and will not count you having a hearing loss at all! You will get more benefit from a mild hearing loss than from a fake hearing loss, in which you won’t get anything. Be honest to get the most benefit.
I know of 2 people that are faking hearing loss. They both have been rated 30% for hearing loss/tinnitus. Both are still able to pass an FAA hearing test that has a much higher standard for hearing than the standards set forth for VA hearing loss compensation. You may catch some, but my guess is you don't catch as many as you think.
I was infantry 11B, specifically MG for my squad. I get a couple episodes of tinnitus per day. Wife says I need hearing aids because I can't hear conversations with ANY background noise. I know it's hard to get a service connection, but I'm going to give it a shot.
Dr Cliff I was in the USCG on a buoy tender. I worked around heavy hydraulic equipment outboard motors diesel engines pneumatic power tools without hearing protection I have moderate tinnitus and going to be tested for hearing loss and tinnitus by both a private audiologist and the c&p. I have a very difficult time hearing conversation going back to 1988 always asking people to repeat themselves etc. if I am in a meeting I have to sit with my right ear towards the speaker or I won't hear everything I favor my right ear a lot. I am afraid the VA is going to deny me due to being out of the service to long and old age (52)
Would be great to see you put together a video explanation on how to use the 38 CFR regulation tables and the audiogram results along with the Speech Discrimination scores and determine if you are rated correctly. It is probably the biggest questions we see daily from our disabled vets group of 60k+ vets. After many years of fighting an increase request denial with 6 Maryland CNC tests performed out of pocket I realized how tough they can be on hearing loss ratings. I have found it quite easy to translate after much study but feel a detailed , step by step video would be much better. Thanks for another great video.

Yes it is very confusing especially when you are diagnosed with several issues with your ear and it isn’t added together but actually given the highest rating out of all. I hope you get the answers you need
I have questions still. I’m a DAV with 10% for tinnitus now under review for hl (both are rated as service connected but HL was at 0) and I’ve been diagnosed with vestibular neuronitis with possible Meniere’s. I have a fitting tomorrow for my hearing aid due to bilateral loss. I’ve been fighting them for years. My job was Navy in a Helicopter Squadron
vestibular neuronitis is an infection and should have been treated. Hard to get to a service connection with that. Meniere’s is chronic - some believe its hereditary. Again very hard to come up with service connection as it has no known cause. Ask about BPPV - it can be caused by injury and hearing loss as the destruction of the inner ear hairs trigger this.
my hearing is JACKED!!!! I love the Marines and Loved Artillery. BUT MY HEARING IS JACKED!!!!! ( I have hearing aids) some of my biggest issues are Bi-lateral hearing Loss, Tinnitus, Vertigo and Migraines. I was in the field artillery as a cannon crew member. I filed a claim for hearing loss went to the VA got tested and service connected for it but a 0% rating which is common. When there I told the nurse about the ringing in my ears, and she said we will also test for Tinnitus. Turns out you need to file a separate claim for that which I did and brought the service connection letter with me showing the hearing loss due to service connection. The Dr was annoyed with the VA that they did not mention the tinnitus and made me come in for the tinnitus test. She did the test said my hearing has actually gotten worse and said I will be getting a letter from the VA showing service connection for tinnitus. Was easy straight forward nurse was great.
@@jimmieburnett8543 I know I filed a claim for it and the technician said the same thing but put me in a booth and tested what tones I could hear. Anyway, I was awarded the 10% for it.
I called to apply. You'll need all your basic information. When get to the means part. You'll need gross income for you and spouse. Also have $ medical premium, deductables you paid, any other medical expenses, an educational expenses. For you and your dependents. Depending on your location an income level, an if service connected. You'll get a priority level. If you qualify. For me the hearing loss is not service connected. But I still qualified.
I was an 0311, served from 86-92 with 3/8. This was during the drinking water issue and I served in the Gulf war. I now have bilateral Meniere’s disease. Is there any connection between the Meniere’s disease and the chemical exposure?
Hmmm...I've been diagnosed as bilateral hearing loss, with tinnitus, and yet was given a 0%! I'm going in on Dec 2 for audiology exam for miniers disease....
Dr. Cliff, I have a 10 per cent rating for Tinnitus and a 0 per cent rating for a service Connected left ear hearing Loss. Could this left ear hearing contribute to balance disorder. I find myself losing my balance at times. I plan to file for an increase for my left ear because it is service related. I want to know is I should include balance disorder.
I have a similar rating. I would just go visit the VA or your local audiologist and tell them your concerns. Ask them if the two are connected, and if they say yes or possibly, make sure that it's noted in your chart. After that is when you file for a secondary using the medical diagnosis as the basis for the claim.
You have much same issues as me. You should go to VA hospital get tested for inner ear conditions In my case found out i have something called Labyrinthitis.
Not so simple. I was evaluated many years ago and awarded 10% tinnitus and 10% hearing. I get periodic hearing tests and - to give an example there is the 'say the word rat' test. My score varies all over - 20 to 80 % depending on (1) how bad the tinnitus AND (2) if they are using the same words as last time - there seems to be a set they use and I know a lot of them - and sometimes they don't even do 10 words.
Are there any secondary disabilities associated with hearing loss, such as depression or feelings of loneliness by being "left out" of conversations? I have been rated at 20% for bilateral hearing loss plus 10% for tinnitus.
So I'm new to the industry, but we have a lot of veterans that come get hearing tests after being denied. Or are sent to us by the VA. But we are an independent company & we try our best to help them. One of the things I've found very odd. Is that it seems that the only factor that goes into compensation or whether they get aids is the WRS1 score. I had a combat engineer the other day that had a moderate to severe loss, but because he did well on WRS1 scores the VA paperwork said he wasn't eligible. But as I understand it, WRS1 testing is more or less giving them the proper amplification to correct the loss. So how on earth is that making them ineligible for hearing aids?
Dr.Cliff. Sir, I'm starting to lose my ability to understand words. The VA filed for me. I saw a Doctor and I felt like she got mad at me, while I was doing the exam her talked to me through the head set and it was loud. I was telling her that she was loud and she came and readjusted my headset and said don't take it off. From then on i felt a different attitude from her, my question is, can a person have get bad hearing over time from my old military days of working around jet engines? I can't find anything written that says that old wounds to the ears can get better, then get worse at an older age. Thank you.
It is likely that the difficulty you are having is due to a combination of whatever damage was done in the military with newly acquired age related hearing loss. It will not get better. It is likely that your only option will be to treat with hearing aids.
I was a 63H10L8 in the Army, I have received a 0% service connected disability rating for bilateral hearing loss. I filed a claim in 2014 and had it denied, appealed it and got 0% service connected disability. I filed for increase in rating and got denied. Is there anything else I can do or am I wasting my time?
If your hearing loss is not bad enough to get compensated for it, consider yourself lucky. You have to be damned near deaf to get money from the VA for hearing loss, so by that time, your quality of life would be so bad that the extra little bit of money is lame compared to having better hearing. Yes, even at 0%, it is hard to hear at times, but to be honest, I don't want to go any higher unless I'm just screwed and the higher rating helps in that regards. Would much rather have some of my hearing left!
Will I need to bring my hearing aids to the C and P exam? I live out of the country and left them at a relatives home and won't have them for the exam. Should I reschedule?
I received hearing aids thru the vha now I've not filed for service connected disability yet for hearing loss. But since I have the proof thru the vha will this help or hinder me?
I think a lot of vets go crazy trying to get rated for Hearing Loss because it is more of a bragging rights issue than a practical claim. If a vet is rated for it, then he/she can legitimately tell people that they "lost part of their hearing in XXX Service Branch" due to a "training accident/combat action/flightline duty," etc. Definitely one of those bar stories that impresses civilians and even other veterans. But if you're actually rated for it, it sucks to have and you will wish you didn't have it at all. A Hearing Loss rating also helps to backup a Tinnitus rating because a small minority of vets do unfortunately slip through and get a Tinnitus rating by lying about it. Hearing Loss can't be faked, so having Tinnitus as secondary to a Hearing Loss rating lends credibility that you really have it. All that said, it's just not worth pursuing as many have noted, unless you have a substantial in-service records that would make getting the rating fairly easy and beneficial to your situation as a veteran.
Hi Doctor. My VA tinnitus claim was NOT service connected. I was a Marine who worked with helicopters on the flight line. She asked if I wore hearing protecting and I said, “yes when I had it, I wore it.” I filed 20 years after I got out of military. Any thoughts why it was denied?! Thx man.🇺🇸
Had a Tinnitus/hearing exam done this week, didn't really think my hearing was to bad but he said I had hearing loss from normal voice on up. High end I was pretty much deaf. Really didn't ask much about my tinnitus which that's what I was there for. Will the VA look at my hearing loss exam results and determine anything from it? Thanks!
They have supplied me with hearing aids ask va audiologist about comp won t give answer was on flight deck helo carrier also had 3inch 50s regular shooting right in front of us va reps ignore all the time 70 72 on ship have tinnitus get 10 percent
Dr Cliff I have service connected hearing lose bilateral so it state on my services record. The only thing is that va only gave me tinnitus when i filed VA does not tell you that hearing lose is a seperate code and very difficult to get all due to the speach recorgination test which we all know it's in a control enviorment. I am fighting to get a higher compensation because of hearing lose their denied it and now asking for a higher review. I believe my audiogolist did not use MCL UCL to indicate my hearing to take the test Dr only ask what i can hear confrontablely, How should i proceed from here. Thank you for your information very helpful.
@@richardpontbriand385 sorry, not sure what you mean by challenged. Challenged due to improper testing protocol? Challenged with a different type of speech test? That is a good question for a Veterans Advocate.
It is way harder to get even 0% for Hearing Loss than it is to get 10% for Tinnitus, so consider yourself lucky. 0% is a legitimate Hearing Loss rating, because if you're getting money for Hearing Loss, your hearing is so bad that you'd much rather be back at 0% and still have some hearing left.
I don't believe I have hearing "loss" I have issues with things sounding really loud and it rattles around in my head to the point I'm squinting my eyes and wanting to cover my ears. It's not loud noise it can be just people talking but its not constantly. Are they able to test for this issue? Is it even worth telling them about it i.e. can something be done about it?
What percentage disability is needed for compensation? I was rated at 10% when I was discharged, but never got compensation. Since then, my hearing has gotten worse (and I got hearing aids from the VA a couple of weeks ago).
Hi Jarold. You may want to get in touch with a VSO. If you have been rated at 10% you should be receiving compensation. Probably under $200 per month, but it is something.
Doctor Cliff, AuD I am confused also I am scheduled for a test for tinnitus and hearing loss with my private audiologist prior to my c&p now I am worried that the VA will say my private exam is not valid I am trying to be proactive
Dr. I am in the process of appeal and my question is the va rating increased to the next Roman numeral on the rating chart when exceptional levels occur. Mine are over 55 at all frequencies. 38 4.86 is vague. It only states to increase to the next level on part b.
I recently started a claim and put several different claims .. most importantly is a claim for a bad dose from Anthrax vaccination. Do you have any info on this claim??
Well I found out about it from an email that was sent to a select group. The info is on the web. I’m not sure if it’s legitimate though however I put a claim in for long term side effects
peter barwick thx for the quick response. Hmm...I’ll do my research on it. I had no idea that there were long term side effects. It was mandatory for all Marines in my unit to get the anthrax series shots. I got out before I could get all of them. They told us that it was safe to get these shots. I never heard anything from any other veterans about them. Let me know how that works out for you. I recently filed for Tinnitus this year and it was denied - NOT service connected. I worked on the flight line with helicopters. I filed 20 years after I got out...maybe that’s why it was denied. I was angry about it, but I got over it. Perhaps, the VA is tightening the lid down on these service connected claims. Who knows? Laterz bro, salute. 🇺🇸✊
Also, the anthrax shot debacle, in my opinion, wasn’t supposed to be let out to the public yet. It’s like the gulf war syndrome, or even agent orange from Vietnam. The government tries to keep stuff like that under wraps but it always seems to come out, thankfully ....
I was diagnosed with a 50% hearing loss when given an ETS physical. I do have a disability rating of only 10%. But it is my understanding that can be increased. What do I need to do to get an increase and hearing aids. My hearing has been deteriorating since discharge.
The first thing we need to do is fix the fact that these are two separate entities. They should automatically talk to each other and get rid of all the red tape but that is for us to fight Congress for . If you thought you left your enemies behind in the desert you were wrong ....
Dr Cliff had my hearing test done about a year and a half ago. When I went in for the test the audiologist told me before the test that I probably would not get the claim approved so whether you hear the beeps or not just push the button??? HUH??? needless to say when I left I was confused as to why would they even have me take the test just to waste time? This was in Houston tx, I have since moved to another state and went to the va there and the audiologist there said yes you do have hearing loss however this is not for a claim.....what???? I worked on a flight deck with fighter jets and cheap ear plugs (get this the range where I had the loss was the higher dbs) . She ordered me a sound pillow which works great for me so I can have ambient noise but the ringing is so loud, she also told me that if the pillow does not work out then they would have to recommend a psychiatrist. I serve my country and am proud of it however this is what I get in return.... NOT FAIR!!!!!
Brandon Black, the claim I filed for the Anthrax shot hasn’t returned any info as of yet from the VA. The VA wanted more info so I provided my shot record that clearly shows when and where I received my Anthrax vaccinations. My opinion is the VA is still checking into the validity of the issue. The only way I found out about it was from an email that was generated within a selected few people. The way I was able to get that email was from someone who knows someone that knows someone
Doctor Cliff, AuD Hi Doctor Cliff thanks for your reply. Let's say scenario 1. patient does have modest hearing loss and tinnitus with mild Dizziness spells with onset of tinnitus but doesn’t get dizzy in every episode of tinnitus. 2. Patient experiences episodes of tinnitus with some dizzy spells but not always and no hearing loss. Also how many occasions of tinnitus must occur to even be rated by the VA? Say you only have tinnitus 5 times a week and then a whole week goes by with no occurrences? I guess I should download the DBQ would answer some of my questions. I am 52 my stepfather is 71 he was Navy Vietnam I was USCG buoy tender. The VA denied his tinnitus and hearing loss claim he told me that the VA stated his is tinnitus and hearing loss is age related. I am afraid that they will tell me the same thing. I am going to a private audiologist for my own opinion. I doubt that the private audiologist will help me service connect but at least I will get a diagnosis.

As hard as it is to get even 0% for a Hearing Loss rating, Congress needs to revise the law and change it to where if you qualify for 0%, you get 10% instead. At 0%, your quality of life suffers significantly at times so you should be compensated for it just like Tinnitus. People should contact the DAV and their reps to try and get this changed.
I recently went through the hearing evaluation. I had the Maryland Test done, My audiologist did go over the result from the exam and she told me I have significant hearing loss about 80% loss in my left ear and 25% in my right However I was awarded 10% how is that possible?
Amount of hearing loss doesn't necessarily correlate with how disabled you are. I presume your level of hearing loss is treatable in some fashion which impacted your disability percentage. You are free to appeal the rating.
Doctor Cliff, AuD You are right, because after I had the evaluation was done , the Doctor told me to make an appointment where I had the test done so I could be fitted with hearing aides however the letter I received from the VA rated me at 90% but awarded 10% so, as you stated I suppose the hearing aides make up for the other 80%

The tests are performed in "sound proof" booths, with out the "real world" type of distracting background noise. The 20% just seemed too low for me. Can I appeal and ask for a higher award for the bilateral hearing loss based on; my inability to clearly understand "words", "letters", or effectively interact in social settings, meetings, etc.? Although, I hear a noise, I cannot understand the words or what people are saying. For example; you say "B" (Bee), I might hear "C" (See) or "D" (Dee) or "E" or "G" or "P" or "T" or "Z", etc. I totally miss the questions or answers at meetings and cannot understand the sermon at church.
This video was of great help to me, to get me on the right path. Thank you.
They send me to the hood. It is total trash. They are fly by night out of work so called "doctors"
So... can you tell if someone is exaggerating Tinnitus too?
@Kenshirofist Gaming We have our ways of knowing if you are are exaggerating your test results. Its very obvious based on our training.
There are several cross checks that can be numerically tracked that identify enhanced responses
What I didn't hear you what you say oh you need a vacation yeah I can tell by looking at you
I know of 2 people that are faking hearing loss. They both have been rated 30% for hearing loss/tinnitus. Both are still able to pass an FAA hearing test that has a much higher standard for hearing than the standards set forth for VA hearing loss compensation. You may catch some, but my guess is you don't catch as many as you think.
Great stuff getting hearing aids from the VHA.
I have a very difficult time hearing conversation going back to 1988 always asking people to repeat themselves etc. if I am in a meeting I have to sit with my right ear towards the speaker or I won't hear everything I favor my right ear
a lot. I am afraid the VA is going to deny me due to being out of the service to long and old age (52)
Did you get denied? I am USCG too and find no one understands.
Hi GMastertech. I don't have a lot of familiarity with the actual process of determining compensation ratings. I will look into this.
Their is a MS-Excel worksheet available that you just put the numbers in and it gives you the the percentage; if you do not have Excel, email me and I will do it for you and sent you the report - jgreelis@gmail.com the: website for the Excel worksheet www.173rdairborne.com/scrate-VA%20comp%20rater.xls
The c&p dr. I seen on friday asked me if i have ever been diagnosed with menieres. I dont even know what that is.
vestibular neuronitis is an infection and should have been treated. Hard to get to a service connection with that. Meniere’s is chronic - some believe its hereditary. Again very hard to come up with service connection as it has no known cause. Ask about BPPV - it can be caused by injury and hearing loss as the destruction of the inner ear hairs trigger this.
5:45 You can also request an increase for the Service-Connected disability of "0" later on a 526ez due to it getting worse.

There is no test for Tinitus.
Getting a 0% rating for Hearing Loss is much harder to get than a 10% Tinnitus rating, so count yourself lucky.
Dr. Cliff, I have a 10 per cent rating for Tinnitus and a 0 per cent rating for a service Connected left ear hearing Loss. Could this left ear hearing contribute
to balance disorder.
Fyi some pple hear ringing in their ears and that need to be understood frequently and mines occur everyday at various time ,and last for a while!
Yes. Depression, risk of falls, social isolation, higher risk of dementia, etc.
How does the MPIF test work when the initial test is lower than 94%? Should the provider use the same list for the dB increase and decrease?
Thanks Dr. Cliff.
I have some hearing loss now. Don't know how I can prove it was service connected. Was exposed to loud noise during service and after.
Tony Quinn your position in the Military alone is proof. Get in touch with your nearest VA and schedule a hearing test with audio

I have hearing loss because of working in the dental field. Do You have any info regarding dental hearing loss?
Character In the video It's great, I like it a lot $$
I'd gladly give up my ratings if I could give up the reasons I have them.
Hi Doctor. My VA tinnitus claim was NOT service connected. I was a Marine who worked with helicopters on the flight line. She asked if I wore hearing protecting and I said, “yes when I had it, I wore it.” I filed 20 years after I got out of military. Any thoughts why it was denied?! Thx man.🇺🇸

You potentially have Hyperacusis. I would mention it, however treatment for this condition is very difficult to impossible.

Doctor Cliff, AuD I am confused also I am scheduled for a test for tinnitus and hearing loss with my private audiologist prior to my c&p
now I am worried that the VA will say my private exam is not valid I am trying to be proactive
Dr. I am in the process of appeal and my question is the va rating increased to the next Roman numeral on the rating chart when exceptional levels occur. Mine are over 55 at all frequencies. 38 4.86 is vague. It only states to increase to the next level on part b.
I'm not sure what you are asking.
I recently started a claim and put several different claims .. most importantly is a claim for a bad dose from Anthrax vaccination.
Do you have any info on this claim??
peter barwick I had anthrax shots in the late 90s too. USMC 95-99. I didn’t know you can file a VA disability claim.
I’m gonna say you were denied because of the time you took to file.
Thanks for your help. Didn’t mean to bother you!

Remember the VA is not there to help you it's I fight every step of the way so be prepared.

I was recently awarded 20% disability for bilateral hearing loss, combined with 10% for tinnitus, I now receive 30% total disability. People laugh, but have missed the joke or punch line, I have no idea what they are laughing at, I just laugh to play along.
I'm sure you can appeal for any reason you want, but not sure if they would approve a higher disability.
