You all never fail to give me hope for future generations of music listeners. You've reviewed some excellent classic albums, and Hats is another one. The opening duo of Over the HIllside and Downtown Lights sets a tone perfectly.
    Big fan of your channel.

I'm from Glasgow, from the same area where Paul Buchanan lives, though I now live in the U.S. A few years ago, my wife and I were in a cafe in the aforementioned area of Glasgow, and Paul Buchanan walked in. I told my wife, who doesn't share my affection for The Blue Nile, and advised her that if she said anything to him, I would divorce her. She kept quiet (foolish woman). At one point, I had to go the bathroom, and asked her again not to say anything to him. In the bathroom, I kept thinking (with respect to my wife), "Please say something to him. Please say something to him...". When I got back to the table, she told me that she had respected my request. We left a couple of minutes later. But at least I can say I once sat less than ten feet away from Mr. Buchanan. P.S: Have listened to "Hats" more than any other record.

Really enjoyed your take on probably my favourite album of all time. As a 57 year old guy from Glasgow, who was lucky enough to anticipate and experience The Blue Nile songs when they were first released, it's heartening to see their music being discovered and truly appreciated by a younger generation. I was lucky enough to see them play live on 3 or 4 occasions and those memories will last forever. Keep up the good work guys.

I feel deeply privileged to be one of a small number of people who saw them perform live in Manchester in 1990. They were touring the Hats album and performing songs from “Rooftops”. I had no idea at that time how little they would perform live other than that or how little recorded output they’d produce. Truly one of the most underrated bands. Buchanan’s solo album “mid air” is also worth a listen.

Aye, but the Sophisti-pop thing gave me the boak.

when recording their music they worked very closely with Linn Audio Engineering, a company still based in Cambridge, England, who make high-end audio systems. If you look at the notes on their records Linn will be on there - and is seen as essential to getting the best Blue Nile sound. The arrangements sound all enveloping on a Linn system - although i must say i knew nothing about good audio so it was a light bulb experience. Cheers, enjoyed the review.

41 year old Blue Nile fan who grew up with this album. It was always a IYKYK album through the 90s 00s in the US. Great to see them finally get their due and recognition by younger guys. Cheers.

I’m another 70 year old Glaswegian adding a comment. Delighted you’re enjoying their work . But here’s the but. WTF is it with your generations compulsion to categorise everything . Sophisti-pop oh for fk sake. You didn’t know they were Scottish 😱. You need to visit Glasgow and you’ll feel it as you walk around
    .

Lmao we can’t really fight against your ire, we are compulsory categorists. Though, I will say, we absolutely did not invent ‘Sophistipop’- been in use since before we were even born, we just use it as shorthand so other people will know what we’re talking about haha

I used to get the 17.30 west coast train from Glasgow to Killie when I was going to college back in the day. This was just before Hats was released. But as you say, you can feel everything they sang about.
The train carriages were the old style, six seater, separate compartments. The scenes and senses from the train journey as it passed through the outer suburbs of Glasgow on a wet winter's night will remain forever entwined in The Blue Nile's Hats.

I think as they're Uni Graduates they want to pidgeon hole everything. In 80's London I had a few graduate mates who went on and on about The Blue Nile so I refused to even listen to them - big mistake.
