      @raggedflaggon9566 9 місяців тому +11

      Yes, currently it is very difficult to get interviews. I recently finished my degree, and I finally got a great remote job, but it was very difficult. I know many with degrees that can't get interviews as well. Either the massive hr layoff is making it more difficult or it is just not the right economic timing. A few years ago during covid they were hiring people like crazy though. My friend without a degree or bootcamp was able to get a great job for example. The only thing you can do is apply to as many places as possible all over the country to increase your odds. Or, if you went to a top tech school then you have much much higher odds. Experience of course trumps all but thats the catch 22. If you keep trying then eventually it will work out. Especially if you can do all the hard leet code questions. But yeah, it took me 5 months to get something. I applied to over 100 maybe 200 places and got 4 interviews. I went to a decent school and had a 4.0. I have heard other people have similar experiences without connections. Unfortunately, this is not a merit based system if it ever was, so let that drive you. I honestly think I got my job through luck. I was just lucky somehow, maybe god, allowed me to get it. Idk. It's hard out there man. During this time I had to become a stoic philosopher because I was getting too depressed.

    In the past you could get a job with a boot camp. Today, it's very hard to get one with a degree. Experience of course trumps all, but thats a catch 22. I would not recommend boot camps because the moment it became popular is the moment it became oversaturated. People I know with boot camps and even without either have gotten jobs but it is far and few between. It is certainly not the norm.

    Coding boot camps compared to an actual degree don’t go nearly as in depth into complex topics like computer architecture, data structures, and the logic behind computers and it’s applications. If a company had to choose between a college graduate with a BA in SWE or CS or someone who’s completed a coding bootcamp, they’ll pick the college graduate 100% of the time.

Let’s talk about grammars, parsers, compilers, RISC architectures, cryptography, symmetric keys, network protocols, state machines, regular engineering stuff (maths, lot of maths, physics, electronics, digital electronics, etc.)… but good luck with your python script, that looks fun, nothing like Kirchhoff or “make the following algorithm run in O(log n)”

    I would like to politely question this advice a bit. From my very recent experience having graduated during the pandemic, many sectors (even in dev) are becoming very saturated, and a lot of my colleagues from a top 5 US school do not in fact make an above average salary as engineers.
    I personally feel like perhaps this was different 8 years ago. It certainly was in my former industry. But now especially post-pandemic, degrees are often needed just to pass the automated resume check, let alone getting to talk with someone.
    Best of luck everyone!

    I wonder what that can do to other fields that force you to standardize and be molded to work in them.

      You can use it to sort through and check your email, make a facial recognition program that executes certain code when a person is recognized.
      If you list out some activities to do on a daily basis, maybe I can help you find ways to use it. But the main thing is that you will go about your day and think of a use for it. Not sure what you mean by "platform", but if you mean software, then any IDE will do, some are better than others, try some out and see which ones you do or don't like. I am also doing A-Level CS (2nd year rn), and I know a bit of C but a lot more of Java, so I Use IntelliJ (an IDE), made by JetBrains, who also made PyCharm (for Python), so I would check that out first. I heard that python is great for beginner coders, so good choice there :). I hope this helps.

    Lucky your ‘example’ friends. Not saying it’s pure luck, I believe they are really really good.
    But most of all companies state the CS degree in their job description, gives opportunity to someone with CS degree. Can onepage resume, with full glorious experiences and accomplishments, but one single degree line missing, make you any standout? No.
    Maybe it was so, a few years ago. But the dev job is now red ocean. Especially in this mass layoff era, and full of AI hypes.

So yeah, you can say it’s all my fault, my achievements that guided me to here are just nothing but a joke to them. But if I did have CS degree, I strongly believe the situation was different.

    • @GreyJaguar725

      @Davic-sc5kf So, it seems like you know "how to solve the problem in English (or whatever language you use)", but you don't know how to "turn that into *Insert programming language here*". So, First pick a programming language (Python and Java are good for beginners), then learn the syntax ("grammar") of whichever language you choose. This may seem a little daunting, but worry not, writing the correct syntax will come naturally over time, just like you learned to write *insert language here* in primary school ;)

    • @DMSBrian24
      @DMSBrian24 Рік тому +3

      C++ is insanely hard and it's falling in popularity, the tool chain is terrible, there's a feature overload too, if you necessarily want to learn it, at least you should first start with C which is already very hard and will teach you a ton of fundamentals, and there isn't really a point of learning C++ and Rust since Rust is often viewed as a C++ replacement, plus Rust won't land you a job any time soon.
      If you just want to learn how to program and get a job, learn a garbage collected language without manual memory management like Go or maybe even a scripted one with dynamic typing since it's simpler to understand for a beginner, like Python or JS (the latter only if you're planning on doing web dev)

    Unfortunately, a degree has prestige. An employer is much more likely to go with the application who has a degree over the one who has not, even if the one who has not might know as much/if more. In most of the beginner roles I looked into as someone graduating from a computing course, almost all of them wanted a degree within computing/mathematics.
